 1. INTRODUCTION

   1-1. BASIC LODE RUNNER

Lode Runner's a simple old game. You are equipped with a gun that can dig
holes in soft ground, which allow you to fall through them or trap enemies
who chase you albeit at a slower pace. If the hole closes over the enemy, he
regenerates at the top. Your object is to pick up all the gold in a level
full of ladders and ropes and hard ground and even false ground and climb to
the top of the level(a flashing ladder in the Arcade case.) If the bad guys
catch you or you fall into your own trap and get swallowed up, you lose. The
game is grid based so there are only exact spots where you can dig. It was
originally created by Doug Smith and has gone through several incarnations on
different platforms.

Some feature very similar levels across platforms; for instance the NES
version takes 50 levels, most of which map to an Apple II level(where the
game was originally ported) minus a few rows. The SNES and Turbografx appear
to pretty up some old levels without offering new challenges. All ports that
maintain the grid structure and basic icons have slightly different AIs and
some have completely different levels or neat new power-ups(the PSX version--
LR and LR extra--has bombs which permanently destroy part of a level, or a
stun gun), some are wickedly tough(GBA Lode Runner, Apple Championship Lode
Runner--not a port, but just a shifting of levels) and some go off in
different directions entirely(Lode Runner 2(PC) is 3-d isometric and looks
like Q*Bert; Nintendo 64's has you walking almost on wire structures and has
some vicious plants that attack you. But it works.)

The arcade versions have some old levels and some new ones, but given that
the monsters are faster and smarter there's enough fresh air that many that
were trivial in old versions of Lode Runner are challenging--especially when
you get point bonuses for efficient form.

   1-2. DIFFERENCES FOR THE ARCADE GAME VS EARLY PC

Of course the arcade version doesn't allow you to create levels, sadly. It's
there to eat your money. So it has a selection of pretty tough levels. Lode
Runner I has 24 of them; II-IV have 30. Each group of 3 levels has a
different set of monsters but the only difference is visual. They don't work
together, and they all have the same AI, so they do tend to clump together
for your advantage.

First thing you'll notice is that your enemies are much faster than in the PC
version. Also, aren't stupid. They try to get horizontally level with you and
run at you. If you climb up the bottom of the ladder, they won't run away.
Hey, it was an arcade game, they needed as many quick deaths as they could
get.

The icons are arranged a bit differently. The board is 24x32, with people and
gold being 1x2 icons. The result is that some platforms that look like they
are level with each other, aren't. This means that sometimes when you dig you
will have a pit half your size. You can't jump out of it. You have to avoid
it.

This gets sticky but on the other hand you can grab gold while on a rope if
the gold is right below the rope--and you can dig under a rope, although
enemies won't fall into the holes you dig. It's more for escape.

You also get bonuses at level's end for winning quickly and/or without
trapping or killing enemies. And sometimes you get a break with regard to
enemies not being killed. You and enemies both walk over healing holes, while
in most other installations it is death to do so. This is more immediately
risky for you if you've laid out a few holes in a row hoping to trap enemies
but makes the no-kill bonuses easier to achieve for a skilled player.

And while this is not directly related to scoring, note enemies holding
gold(which they leave randomly as they walk) flash. And if one falls in a pit
you didn't make and you release them, they stop flashing. Which means less
points for you but less obligation to kill them and less chance to run out of
time.

 2. CONTROLS

If you are playing from MAME the controls may be a bit tricky, with the left
CTRL and left ALT being used to dig. I set P1 button 1 to Z and P1 button 2
to X, so you can use those to dig left and right respectively. But the old U-
I-O-J-K-L Apple keyboard formation works well too if you're feeling
nostalgic.

If you try to move diagonally, up/down override left/right. So if you want to
get on that ladder, it works, but to get off it you have to push left/right
explicitly.

If you want to dig or fall, note that your movement is quantized. A Lode
Runner board is 24x32 with your icon being 1x2 and there's no way to, say,
fall in the middle of a column. You'll automatically shimmy to the nearest
one and fall. Also note it takes time to dig, so if an enemy is too nearby,
he'll walk over what you dug and get to you.

You should also note that it takes time to get off a ladder. So if an enemy
is in too-hot pursuit you may be out of luck, and you need to take that into
account when approaching an enemy. In fact it can be tough to get off a
ladder sometimes RIGHT when you want so you may want to fall from above.

You'll also notice that you can jump up a bit for the rope. Icons are now
every half-human-height, so the rope may not be right where you can grab it.

The whole thing about icons not being the same size as you or your enemies is
very important also when dealing with where to dig holes or walk. For
instance, if you have this:

Another fun thing about the emulator is that you can time things based on the
time remaining. So if you need to be exact, use save states to say "this
worked at time 7270 but not 7300..."

 3. SCORING AND LEVEL DIVISIONS

You lose a man if you run out of time, touch an enemy, get killed in a hole
you dug, or wind up in a space you can't get out of. The game can detect when
you are trapped, sometimes, too. "YOU ARE BOUND TO DIE" and you restart from
there.

You get 200 for each chest, 100 for each guy you entrap, and 100 for each guy
you kill.

Extra men at 50000.

You get bonuses for various tricks.
--walking over a group of 3 guys in a row you entrapped=3000
--landing on a guy after falling=1000
--sealing a single enemy off=1000(you can do this to the same enemy several
times)

If you complete a level with more than half the original time remaining, you
get double the bonus time amount. When you have 1/4 of your time remaining, a
tune plays every 100 points to remind you. You lose about 50 bonus points per
second.
Without entrapment(i.e. digging to trap a guy): 20000
Killed no enemies(no one gets stuck in a hole): 10000

This allows for interesting sub-puzzles for handling levels efficiently. Of
course it's not always possible to get whichever bonus, but you can try.

Each block of 3 levels gets you a new group of enemies. They think the same
and are just as fast, but they look different. They're all about equally
weird and lethal.

Levels 1-3 have birds with goggles.
Levels 4-6 have weird tribal R2D2 looking things.
Levels 7-9 have weird multicolored gremlins.
Levels 10-12 have snorkeling Dig Dug type fellows.
Levels 13-15 have baby chickens in pastel swimming caps, or something.
Levels 16-18 have combination gerbils-vacuum cleaners.
Levels 19-21 have walking vacuum cleaners.
Levels 22-24 have funky crabs with suction claws.
Levels 25-27 have gollum-looking hunchbacked monsters.
Levels 28-30 have weird multicolor walking Mr Potato Heads.

This is not a bad level, and with any luck you can get the 20000 bonus
easily. Get the gold chest to the left and head back right. Climb up after
the third enemy hits the ground and fall left for a gold--try to make sure
the enemy doesn't go up the ladder. Get the gold below and wait for enemies
to get close--the front flashing one will run at you and when you fall
through he'll become the behind one. Dig right and fall and now you can wait
for everyone to fall. Climb U-L-etc to get to the top. If you're lucky
enemies will leave goodies behind. You can get the gold later, either
directly or by suckering everyone to the right and falling right, then going
L-D and outflanking them.

Best of all if you're quick enough you can get the triple-time bonus too.

This level is unsatisfying to me because the solution is so pedestrian--
however, there are ways to cut down on the time you have to spend here. Dig
left to get the suspended gold, then dig left and fall twice more to clear
out that area. Come back over right(you can make it over the guy if he fell
in your hole) and at the top, fall left and dig right and fall and dig right.
Go up the ladder and right along the bricks.

A bad guy with a pie hat may appear near the center cement blocks, to the
left. You get 3000 for picking this up if it's there. You just have to dig
another hole for him, walk over him and fall through. Dig right twice and
then fall left. Dig a hole right after a few seconds and fall through when
the guy above is about to jump down on you. This should push him to the left.
You can now trap the guy in the center. If someone's on the right, just fall
right after completing the center, so that you're 2U from the bottom, and the
enemy will try to drop on you. This is your way around getting trapped at the
bottom.

The rest should be pretty easy. Assuming nobody's left in the center, all you
need to do is just walk for some gold and dig for some others, and take the
rope at the top left to drop down, come back right to the center, and then
fall right from the top onto the false brick to get gold. There's one more
gold in the DR.

Another level you just need to dig your way out of. Climb up the very left of
the ladders and drop down to the right once the guy below almost catches you.
Note that you will have to fall on the half-suspended gold to catch it. Once
you work your way down you may need to dig on each side to get by the
enemies--it depends on if the guy on the second ladder comes down on the left
or the right. Whichever way it is, you can get by him and go up that ladder.
Wait at the top again and then head all the way right. Climb up the far
ladder and then you may need to wait again. For this sequence you may want to
dig a bunch of holes to the left to catch enemies. Climb up/down the ladders
to disrupt them a bit from running right at you, and the time it takes for
them to regenerate should prove conclusive.

At the top you can fall to the left and make it past the enemies who will
dither cluelessly at the top of the ladder. Between the two left ladder
complexes, be sure to have holes dug for each enemy on the ladder, i.e. if
there's one to the left and two to the right, dig once to the left and twice
to the right and stand in the middle. The way up is on the UL.

Oo, robots with wire hangers. This makes for weird behavior climbing ropes.

This is a lively level where a few tricky moves make the jaunt to the top at
the end that much easier. First, dig right and go left until you can't any
more. Fall and dig left and get the gold on the right. Fall through and dig
right--onto the leftmost brick. 4R dig-L and wait for the enemy to escape.
Then fall. He won't regenerate outside and that is one less enemy to worry
about later.

Get the gold below and land on the monsters to the left. Dig left and then
walk back and forth on top of the monsters until they fall to the left. Grab
all the gold to the right. Dig down and get more gold, and then fall right.
You'll have to run left at the bottom. When you reach the gold in the center,
dig left and go right 9 times. Back up and now wait to dig the tenth hole,
which will allow you to run over the enemy and get the final gold. The
advantage of this is that he will not be falling from the sky when he
regenerates.

So you have three enemies to deal with and it follows that on the right or
left, only one may fall. Go that way. Dig a hole for your enemy and loop
around him--if you're on the left you don't have to double back, but on the
right you can wait for enemies to arrive, then go up two ladders and switch
to the left before climbing up to the top. If there's an enemy in front of
you, dig him out of the way, but if there are too many it may be best to go
to the level with 2 cements in the center, wait for enemies to appear, and
dig your way out. Let them follow you and you should be able to run around
them just enough--or you can just dig them out of the way on the platform
below.

I can get blue time clearance with good play.

Here trapping enemies will come in very very handy in progressing through
this level. Head right, pause a half-second, climb up the ladder, dig left
and fall in. Dig left so you can get out and if all goes well, someone will
follow you down. One down, three to go.

Now goad someone else to the UR. Again, dig left to get into the sttructure
and fall in when he's coming up the ladder below you. Dig a way out and
you're halfway home.

Now do the same for the center-left O, going to the bottom and dropping an
enemy in--you may need a bit of caution here as 1. you want to drop in from
the left to get the suspended gold and 2. there's another gold that impedes
digging, for the moment.

I use the UL to dig the final hole. Wait for a guy to follow you, then drop
into the area and go left and right and dig left to escape. Everyone's
trapped, so the only thing left to do is hack away.

For the DL and DR corners,

I generally just miss the entrapment bonus here but the relatively easy 20000
is a nice trade-off.

Getting rid of your enemies is not too bad but it's figuring out how to dig
holes that's tough in this level. Climb up the right ladder and fall down the
rope. Then climb up the big ladder. Dig left and go down until you have
access to the entombed gold and then continue on the way up. Now you'll need
two trips through if you play things right. I'll deal with the tougher of the
two first.

When you fall to the bottom, back off left and dig right a bunch--8 times
should be enough. The enemies will vanish and you will be able to move on.
Stand on the bottom rope in case any one regenerates to where they'd be in
your way.

Now for the second part.

Again you may have to back up and dig holes, but the enemies should fall
quickly enough. Get on the rope and eventually they'll drop out of the way,
and you can progress.

I just missed triple-time bonus but maybe you can do better figuring a way
not to delay near the end. Or just getting lucky with where monsters go.

You can dig 1, 2 and 3 and 4 and thus get one gold while waiting for another.
The next part is the last of the gold you can get without disturbing your
enemies:

Yes, that's right, enemieS, because when you dig right while on what seems to
be one, four fold out. Run right after the third falls, and then run right
when the fourth guy starts to. You'll tapdance on his head. Take a break from
holding right for a bit(or you'll fall between two monsters) and make it to
the broken ladder where you can climb up, with a head start. Then, at the
top:

Wait at the site of the bottom gold and then let your enemies follow you. You
can fall right and then hold DL to go to the bottom. You have two options
here: just dig four holes and pick off the gold from the foremost guy that
falls in, or let the enemies chase you around in hopes they'll fumble it and
get the gold later when you make it back to the DL and they all fall chasing
after you. Either way is OK. At any rate you should be fast enough to get the
remaining two gold pieces unmolested--dig over the one and run down for the
other.

A very pleasant level I found looked much tougher than it really was. You can
knock out the right side with one move:

Wait to dig 4 after digging 3, and then you can go above, dig 5, and 6 and 7
soon fall. Then head to the left of the platform. Get the gold and 2-1 dig so
that the enemy can escape. Run across him to the left to get a gold, i.e. run
left just as he is in midair. Then run right, fall on him, and climb the
ladder and go left. Dig two holes and run across. Dig behind you and then
clear out the left side.

It looks like you need three trips, but actually two should do the trick.
However, you'll need to kill off your enemies to ensure smooth passage.
Perhaps there's a way to avoid this but it seems too risky to me. Go up the
left stairs and 1L. When the enemy goes onto the rope, drop left. He'll drop
and follow you. Make a quick 2-1 dig to get to the 3 gold, then...

That'll get you to a chamber where you just need to dig 3-2-1 to get out.

Now on the right you can enter the same way, but be sure to dig 2 squares
behind to the right and 2 forward to the left, going as far as you can before

You can clear out all the gold and get nice bonuses as they are strung
together. A simple 2-1 dig gets you out. I can get the blue time bonus even

Head left immediately. Get the gold on top of the stairs and clear out the
left side. There are two suspended golds in the center. Drop to get them. Now
you may have a couple bad guys in the UL. You can shake them by going to the
ladder below, waiting and climbing up. They'll go off to the left. You can
fall down now. Someone may fall down by accident, but you don't want to go to
the bottom yet. Try suckering the bad guys to the top and then dropping as
near the center as you can. That way you can move to the left or (preferably)
right and dig a bunch of holes. Of course, before you drop down you'll want
to make sure that there's no gold left on top.

As the monsters regenerate, go to the DR to get the final gold. But wait! If
you've dug holes on the right, don't get the gold until the enemies have
fallen in. Once you have the gold you should be able to go up the UR and even
if a monster regenerates and gets in your way, you can just drop down and let
him follow suit, so you can circle around him.

This is an amusing level where fortunately running across enemies is easier
than it looks. There is however a bit of tedium waiting for them to make it
to where you are. Head left and down. Wait for the third guy to fall below
you and walk left.

Now walk right over him. When you get to the right of him, stop and wait and
then run again. At the suspended ladder, go up. Dig the three bricks to the
right. Continue on the way up. You can probably drop on one of the gold
pieces at the top. You may be able to get another one, too, although a
trailing enemy may fall on the right and force you to dig before that. By
then the enemies will have come from around below and they'll be zigzagging
back right. You have a small problem of getting trapped if you climb over the
enemy past the suspended stair, so watch out for someone coming above from
the left. If he is, stay on the stair and just dig over the gold later.

Dig behind you although you may want to leave one enemy so that, when you
climb across the top rope and fall right, you can climb over him when he runs
left. You'll need to, to clear the rope gap at the right(make sure it's safe
when you fall right. Also there's a weird bug that causes you to fall if you
walk over two squares instead of one.) You may need to drop on one more gold
piece and get some leftover pieces below after that. But after getting the
gold on the far right you can just eliminate enemies at will.

OK, you have to forget about the time bonus here, but this is not so bad a
level. Play it right and you can get the blue bonus. Go to the 2nd-highest
platform on the left and walk over the enemy as he goes left and falls. Dig
left and you can get into the side zone. Get the gold and dig left and fall
so that you don't get trapped in the DL corner. Now you just need to work
your way out of the bottom--right, up, take the rope, and dig left, then dig
left again to get back to the main area.

You may now have an enemy blocking the way up, but it's OK because you can
still dig to get the entombed gem. Dig left, drop, dig 2 left, drop, dig 2
left, etc. And the enemy will be misdirected before you get the gem. Climb to
the top and go right and dig at the right edge. Fall in and dig left at the
top ladder, down, dig left and fall left. Back up and dig your way out, to
the main area, and up the center ladder to the next level.

An odd zigzaggy level where even if you get all the gold you may find
yourself trapped, or seemingly so, and that last bit of planning is
maddening. You'll work from right to left here, diggine enemies out of their
traps in the checkerboard structures so they fall into the pits at the
bottom. Then you can just walk across them. The walkthrough below details
what side of the enemy to dig on.

1L(from the right--don't touch that gold,) drop, 1L, drop, get $, 1R, drop,
1L, drop, 1R, drop, get $, dig left and run over the enemy right away to get
to the gold on the left as he falls.

Dig 2L of the bird. Fall, dig R, fall, dig left, fall, dig right, fall, dig
right, fall, get $, dig left, fall, get gold, dig left, fall, and go back t
othe top.

On top of the octopus, dig so that he can fall left, right, etc., back and
forth. STart by diggin U and UL of him. Get the two gold on the way.

For the final bit, dig the two squares left of the bird, then left of the
octopus and left of the lizard as you get the final gold. You'll need to
pause at one point before continuing right but even if a monster appears on
the rope nearby, he'll fall off it instead of running at you. The coast
should be clear.

Head to the top. Dig right. Wait for the guy to fall in. Go 4R and start
digging left and going down. Head to the bottom and wait for the enemies to
lump together before taking the stairs up. Here you can go UL, dig left, 1R,
dig left and go to the left and dig right. Fall on the one gold and now go up
the side of the left hand and dig your way down. You should not be impeded,
but if you are, drop to the center and dig.

From here you'll want to dig below the first gold in the hand, then 1R of
there, then down to land on the suspended gold. You now should have a clear
path to either the far top left side(just walk on over) or the right(start at
the top and dig down)--or you can always sit near the bottom and dig as
enemies fall.

Note that if an enemy sticks himself on the far left, you can go 2R of him
and dig L, 1D, dig L and fall left when he gets on the ladder under you.

Here you just need to start by trapping the enemies in the bottom row where
they can't get to you. Dig left and head to the DL. Climb down. Ideally
you'll pot one bad guy 3R of DL and three to the right. To get more guys to
come over, climb up the 3-ladder in the DL, then climb down and go to the DL.
They'll try to get to the bottom.

Then you can run clockwise around the board to get everything--though you'll
have to dig for the gold between the ladders. Dig left, go down, dig left, go
down, etc. Also at the bottom, from the DR, dig R, 1L, dig R, 1L, dig R, dig
L, fall R and get a gold and go left.

Then you have to release the enemies--for those in the DL, stand 1U1L and dig
left, 1R, dig left. Trail off to the right if you have to. In general you can
string enemies out going right and then change your course. Perhaps you can
even get the 10000 bonus if you're lucky but I was never able to do things
without someone getting killed.

The ladder appears on the far left, but if you haven't killed anybody, you
may want to lead them to the UR before going back there.

This level is one-way traffic but it's not always clear which way to go. The
structure partially full of false bricks is a very interesting timing puzzle,
but the rest is relatively straightforward. If you're not using save states,
however, the final puzzle can be annoying as it requires near-perfect timing.

dig-R L dig-R L dig-R and get the gold. Dig left as you climb down the
ladder. Go to the left edge and dig right as you climb down that ladder. Fall
onto the rope and dig the 2 squares to the right, then the right one below
those. Get on the ladder. 1D 3R 3L dig-R 1D 3L 4R and fall. Go right to get
the DL gold. 4L 2U 3R U R dig-R and fall to the right edge. Dig left at the
bottom 1-rung ladder to get back on course.

For the gold in the center-ish area, hang on the 1-rope near the top. Dig L
and R. Now stagger your digs. Dig 3L and then R, climbing back up. Then dig
2L and R. Now you can get the gold and retreat to where you were by going UR-
U-L.

Now this second-last gold is a doozy.

Dig 1 and 2. Wait 5 seconds in position to dig 3, then dig 3. L-U-R and dig
4. Don't wait for 1 or 2 to fully heal before running over them. Wait 4
seconds and dig 5. Then climb over 4 when it heals and dig 1 from the right.
Fall left and dig 6 from the left. Fall right and dig 7 and then fall in.

If your timing is very bad you'll get stopped in the false brick L of 5. But
if it's only imperfect you'll get killed. So maybe you just want to practice
here a bit before taking care of the rest, which is rather easy in
comparison.

Once you got that gold, 4L U and you get a gold. From the flashing ladder dig
R, 1D, dig R and fall R. D L dig and you're back in the main area. Dig R near
the right edge as before to get to the UR ladder area and the exit.

Well, the first thing to do is go immediately right and dig between the
cements. Fall right and then go left on top of the enemy. You'll get some
nice gold. You can then climb up the ladder and dig behind you and then dig
right to get a suspended gold.

Now to trap the enemies you need to head down the center ladder, right, and
1D. Then the enemies will go to the left of you. Go 2D and they'll go further
down, and then head all the way down. They're trapped!

2U dig-L fall-L dig-L R dig-L for one gold. Then at the top of the ladder,
dig R of the cement, fall left and dig left for another gold piece. The DL is
somewhat tricky. 2U of the DL, dig right. 3U 2R dig-right 2L 4D dig-right and
fall through the second hole you dug. Dig right, fall, dig left and you will
escape just in time.

Then from the left-center ladder dig 2 squares left, fall and repeat until
you get to the enclosure. Dig right, fall, dig right. Then at the bottom of
the big ladder, dig left to release the enemies. They'll get stuck, maybe
leaving a gold behind, but you can get that again.

This level looks symmetrical in the center, but it isn't quite, and so this
makes for a subtle difference in challenges.

After digging 9, run right and dig left to get a. Then run over the fallen
enemy to the rope and wait and run left when he's at the ladder--there may be
other enemies waiting, so you need to be  able to run left, back up and dig

Once you've taken care of that it doesn't matter which side the enemies fall
on. They'll drop from the ladders and you can run around them to the next
level.

You can get 20000 here and in fact it's best not to kill your enemies--
they're less randomized that way.

Wait for the enemy to fall down the second of the ropes, then climb up. Don't
stay level with the ropes or the enemy on the right won't come running at
you. Go right at the top rope and get the gold, fall through the false brick,
go left and right and head to the right. Again remember being level with the
ropes sends everyone to the left. You can pick up some gold at the top but
the best policy is to work as follows:

1. Get the rightmost gold, then the one fto the right of that(fall) and fall
right and go left. You can dive into the middle of the three gold pieces.
Then you can drop onto the two golds on the top that are together. There's
another random gold on the cement. That leaves three total to go. You'll need
to jump on your enemies for that.

If enemies start chasing you now it's no big deal, because you can keep ahead
of them. In fact drawing them close you you will save time.

2. For the gold you can't reach by yourself, you can land above the rightmost
one with enemies chasing you. Then fall on the last enemy through and keep
falling on him. Don't worry--he'll fall off the rope below looking for you.

3. Let enemies follow you and fall to the cement:

       then jump on them.

The final trick is getting to the next level, but you should be able to get
to one side and avoid the enemy(make sure he's not on the ropes or ladder
when you drop) and then watch him drop and run by him.

Go right. One guy will fall in a hole. Then go to the bottom and wait for the
other guy to descend. Get the gold to the right when he does. USe the rope to
climb over him, drop and climb the near ladder a rung. Go right and left to
get the gold piece. (He goes right.)

How let him follow you--up the left sideline, 1R, and all the way up. Before
changing direction make sure he's just 2 squares behind. When crossing the 1-
rope, go right and down 1 to trap this fellow. Go down and dig left/go down
when you can to get the DR gold.

Dig 1-7 quickly, wait a few seconds, dig 8 and then dig 9 to clear this out.
Then D-R and fall through to get the suspended gold.

Release the enemies by digging the 3 squares right of the rope. Get their
gold and dig 2L of the rope to fall in.  (*-if there's a way to do this
without them getting trapped I'd be interested)

Now dig 1U1L, 1L and 1D1L of the ladder. Fall right and dig left to
neutralize this guy, then dig all around the DL ladder and there's and exit
to the left.

You should be able to advance easily by hiding out in the DL(they'll fall to
get you) or using the cement as a place to give an enemy the run-around, if
you must.

A messy little level where you have to sucker your enemies into falling down
in the right places and at the right time, but a few false bricks make it a
lot easier. If you get in trouble, note the 4-wide in the DL--not the corner-
-where you cah dig to get enemies off your back.

Go up the ladder to get one gold, then go to the upper right and wait. Let
the enemies come to you and drop down to get the gold--the one in the pit is
accessible because the pit is false.

Now you may need to loop-the-loop at the bottom of the big ladder(wait at the
bottom, move up when they almost catch you--or dig two holes at the bottom
and fake out the third guy if that's too sticky) to get back to the top, but
once you do you can drop on the topmost gold and fall left twice when an
enemy is 1L of over the top-left brick(which is fake.) He'll fall through,
and you'll want to walk over him and back right. Fall left and wait and the
enemies will lump together. Now you have one more trip to the top to cover
the gold pieces.

For the left side you can fall on the leftmost gold and go left(false brick)
to get one--run along the bottom to get back up. You can fall through for the
next-left gold and then for the gold under the brick you need to fall on the </pre><pre id="faqspan-2">
brick 3U1L of it. Enemies following will fall 1R or 2R and down the chute 1R,
and you must fall on them twice to pick up the gold piece you couldn't reach
otherwise. Again you'll have to make the enemy fall a bit early, i.e when he
is walking over the brick between the ropes.

During all this you may have to kill a bunch of enemies--if so, don't worry
about them materializing at the top. AS you climb up the ladder they'll find
some dumb reason to fall off the rope trying to catch you.

Go right to the ladder and down through the false brick below it. Get the 2
gold nearby. There's a false brick to the left on the top. Fall through it,
get the gold to the left, and wait at the bottom. When both enemies are
following you at the bottom, go up the stairs, right through the bricks, and
back left. Go to the upper right now.

Your object is to trap the enemies in the hole to the left. To do this you
will need to wait for them at the top--if there's only one, dig a hole for
him, stand on him and dig right to get the gold below, and dig again, and
draw the other guy over the same way. If there are two, make two holes above
the 3-wide and then dig to the right of them, then fall and dig left to get
to the island 4R of the pit.

Dig left, get the gold, and dig out. Trap the other guy if need be and then
fall over them to the left. Dig 1U1L of the UL gold, wait 3 seconds, dig 1L
of it, go U/R through the false brick, and dig over the gold to get it.

Now you can just dig over the left edge of the DL ladder, fall, go left, and
dig the heck out of the enemy before barreling into the DR for the final
gold, although it forsakes the 10000 bonus. But there is a (much riskier)way
to get it.

Fall on the gold and dig right to trap the enemy, then dig the square next to
him. Fall off the ladder and dig those two squares. Climb back up, pause a
second and dig left. Then fall right and dig the two squares at the bottom.
Fall left and get the gold, then move all the way right. Climb up the stairs
and dig left. Now you should be able to make it out, as the ladders that
appear let you out of the pit you were in.

Two things to watch out for, though: first, you may get tagged by the guy
below you jumping up(so dig right after going by him to slow him down more)
and second, the guys in the pit will be released. Climb U-R-U-R to get to
them. Dig two holes and run across. You can make it up the level-ending
ladder before the one enemy is trapped for good.

Some opponents do odd things here, up to and including waiting around an area
you fell into, and you need to adjust to that. First, go up and right and
wait for the enemy to follow. Drop onto the 1-rope, 2L, drop. He'll fall into
the pit with his compatriotl

From the bottom of the right center ladder, dig the two bricks to get a gold.
Then go up the ladder, left, and drop on top of the stuck enemy. Dig left. He
will fall left. Get the gold to his left and dig right while over him. Fall
over him and dig right when he gets stuck again. Then climb on him after he
falls and dig left. He'll fall left but this time dig right to get out of the
whole mess.

Now at the middle of the left ladders, go left. Dig as follows to clear the
left side.

On the far right side, dig down for another gold. Go right to the 1-rope and
dig left. Drop when they fall, dig right, fall, dig left, fall, get the gold
and dig the enemy out. Head to the right after you fall and dig to get to the
DR corner. Go up the ladder and something weird happens here--the bad guys
switch their order and the flashing one comes out ahead, because they can
grab the ladders above. So wait above the 1-rope and fall when people are
close.

Fall down, 2L, dig right, get the gold and run away. If the guy behind still
has the gold, then just dig left while on top to pot one enemy and let the
other guy fall down.

I just missed the triple-time bonus with this procedure but didn't try to
tighten it up.

An entertaining little level requiring a little cross-stitching to get
through.

Go right for the gold, then left and down and dig left. Fall right and climb
back up. If you're confident you can move smoothly, 2L dig-L fall left and go
back right. Otherwise re-dig the first brick you dug. Next you want to walk
to the UL to take that.

Now all the monsters will come in handy as stepping stones--you just have to
figure out how. Dig to land on the enemy. Drop on him and then run left. Dig
left to let the next guy out. Drop on him and run left. Do the same for the
third. Get on the ladder, go up, and get the gold, then fall left into the DL
corner. Note you'll be able to go out to the right because of where everyone
fell.

solution for if you wanted some leeway. In fact, with this solution, you can

I found the gold in the DL extremely nasty to get--not that the others are
easy. And there's a time crunch too. But you can start things off right by
going immediately UR and digging a hole. Then go right, fall down the second
ladder, 1R and fall down again. The enemy you trapped will go down a shaft.

Now for the next enemy: 1L, dig right when he falls, then 2R 2U L U 3L U.
You're at the top of a 1-rung ladder and he'll be 3R from you. When he's
almost at the top of his little ladder bob up-and-down, go 1D and dig R. 1U
1L 2U 3L. Wait for him to come and then dig L. Fall D, R, fall D. The next
guy will fall 1L1D of the gold on the cement.

Now you can pick off gold pieces at will--well, almost all of them. The DR is
slightly confusing, so here's the solution:

In the UR, dig L/R at the top of the ladder next to the golds to save some
time. Go right and then back left. Drop on the DL monster for another gold.

Dig 1 and 2. Dig 3-5 to get rid of the enemy--he'll fall in 3, then 4-5 will
kill him. This doesn't lose your bonus, which would go kaput at the end
anyway. You can run in and out in time.

For your final trick, dig the four left walls of the middle chute, land on
the enemy and dig left. Walk over him and dig left between the ladders--don't
fall on him as that'll not give you enough time. Run left, dig right at the
edge and step on the enemy and dig right. Run right and dig left a bunch.
With any luck one enemy will regenerate in the UR--if not you just have to
keep goading them towards you and killing them.

The last bit of this level seems to rely on some nasty chance, but the first
part poses some very interesting puzzles. Go left, dig the 4 leftmost
squares, then come back and dig left as you go. When standing over the enemy,
dig right so he falls. Now dig left 4 times, fall, dig left 4 times, fall,
dig right 3 times, fall, dig right 4 times, then 2-1 dig on the left edge,
get the final gold, and fall.

Go back up to the top. Dig right to release the other enemy and fall left off
the ladder. Go down and then fall right at the bottom rung of the ladder. The
enemy will be trapped. Dig as below, up to 9.

If you are playing on an emulator, save the game here. Then run right after
digging A. The enemy will fall into a and you can move up the ladder.

Where the new enemy drops depends on when you dug him up. So you may need to
restore the state and dig again until he falls into the hole where he
started. Then dig everything right of him, walk over him, dig right and fall
right. Motor right and dig two holes left. DON'T get the final gold until
both guys are potted, or they won't fall in. Once you get it it's not too
hard to get to the UL.

For the left part you need to think outside the box--well, you have to fall
outside it to win. I tried for the longest time to get from the trop to the
bottom and back but actually you need to dig your way out the left. The
ladder down has two uses--to give you a longer trek and a way out.

First you will want to dig left at the 1-ladder, 1R, dig-R and fall and get
the gold and go back up. Then dig the two squares left of the 1-ladder. Fall
down, 1L. Wait 3 seconds. Dig and go back to the top. Dig the 2 holes--if
they don't regenerate almost immediately after you get up, retry your timing.
Then fall down the 1-ladder, 1R, dig left and go up. Go left when the ladder
reforms, go 2U and dig-L D dig-L. 3D, dig-R D 2L to get the gold and circle
back up and out--falling to the left.

The middle part is easy enough. Dig down the left side to get the one gold.

Dig 1. Dig 2 and then make sure 1 forms soon enough for you to step over it--
remember it doesn't have to be fully formed to walk over. Then dig 3-5 from
the left. Fall right, get the gold, L 2U 2R D 2R. Woohoo! You should be able
to fake the enemies out after you drop to the right and get the final gold.
Climb up the right long ladder--if you want, shake the enemies off by going a
half-square up so you are level with the bottom of the cement. The guys to
the left will fall and you can go up.

But there's a stupid bug where you can't solve the level that way. You have
to get these idiots to follow you and then if you circle around to the
left(wait as long as you can to drop) and go back up, the level's yours. Sans
5000 bonus(for me at least.)

This last level isn't as nasty as the few that directly preceeded it. IT does
have a neat collection of different monsters, though.

Take care of some administrative stuff on the left. L-U dig left and 3L-U-2L-
dig L-R-dig L and 3L-dig left and L-U dig left. Now you can get the entombed
gold and the one on top of the enemy--dig him out so he drops down a bit more
while you're at it..

Walk over to the guy on the right. Dig 2R for him to escape. As he falls, dig
right to get access to a gold. Dig left. Go down, dig right, wait two
seconds, 1U and dig left. Fly right to the edge, 2D 2L 2U 2R U 4L(loop) to
get the gold and make it past the closing brick. Now you're on top of the
enemy again. Dig left, fall left and dig left before the enemy walks right.
You have an out now. You can get the gold in the DR or you can wait--another
guy is going to drop in that hole, too.

Left and up. Dig 1L of the suspended gold, 1D, wait, dig again, and get the
two gold in the enclosure. Now go on top of the robot.

Dig 2U of the robot and fall in(that's a false brick.) Run 2R over him and
again dig left when he falls R of the 1-brick--you have less margin for error
this time. Then get the DR gold if you haven't(requires digging one more
hole) and pass to the left.

Now, on top of the lizard, dig left, then wait to drop. You'll fall into his
hole and then when you run left again you'll be able to dig to get the dragon
out of his hole(if you'd run left immediately it wouldn't have worked.) Now
you have a bridge to the far left! The gold here isn't tough to get--just dig
a hole and come back. Do all that and come back to the DR. Dig the two
squares in the right corner to get the final gold.

You're done! (PS if anyone asks for details about the mundane bits in the
last paragraph, it will raise my blood pressure. You're good enough by now or
you wouldn't have gotten here.)

I completed this with 4260 left. But there's that 20000 bonus.

At the end you see an enemy totem crumbling as you climb up from block 10 and
some text: "Congratulations! You have passed through 30 dangerous places. But
there are still other enemies on your way."

Then the game loops back to level 1. Which probably seems terribly trivial by
now.
