2) INTRODUCTION
==============================================================================
Well, its quite obvious why I wrote this FAQ...
I have already wrote an FAQ for Track & Field and this game
is the sequel to it so I couldnt just leave it at that!
I also wrote this FAQ because it is such a popular game
and one of my all-time favourites!
So lets get button bashing!
INFORMATION:
Hyper Sports (c) 1984 Konami (Centuri License)
This game is the sequel to the massive hit,
Track & Field (Hyper Olympic)
This game is 1-4 player (1-2 Players simultaneously)
Screen Resolution: 256 x 224 (H) 60.000000 Hz
==============================================================================
3) BASICS + TIPS
==============================================================================
Main Controls
--------------
Button 1 - Run
Button 2 - Action (Jump or Throw)
Button 3 - Run
1st, 2nd and 3rd Matches
-------------------------
If you can complete the first 7 events,
you get to do them again!
(You move onto the 2nd match)
But then the qualifying times are harder!
So the 1st time round is the easiest.
The 2nd is harder.
The rounds keep getting harder and harder after that
After the 6th round, the qualifying times keep repeating
(Thanx to Mr Neil)
Run Faster
-----------
On the running/swimming events, instead of pressing either
Button 1 or Button 3, you have to press one after the other
to get maximum speed!
I have pointed this out because on Track & Field you had
to just press one or the other.
==============================================================================
4) EVENTS
==============================================================================
This Section covers all 7 events.
It shows qualifying times/scores and tips on how to win!
-----------------------
4a) FREESTYLE SWIMMING
-----------------------
Controls: Button 1 - Stroke
Button 2 - Take a breath
Button 3 - Stroke
Qualifying Times: 1ST MATCH - 2 Minutes
2ND MATCH - 1 Minutes
3RD MATCH - 58 Seconds
4TH MATCH - 55 Seconds
5TH MATCH - 50 Seconds
6TH MATCH - 45 Seconds
Tips: After a few seconds of swimming, "breath" will appear.
Press B2 to take a breath and continue swimming.
: To swim better, try to predict when you will need to take a breath.
It is about every 2-3 seconds.
: Don't press the buttons until your character comes to the surface
after the dive into the water. You will stay underwater a bit
longer and get an advantage. (Thanx to Sonny_Jim)
: It is possible to get a turtle bonus (see BONUSES section)
on 1 player. You just have to finish at the same time as one of
the computers. (Thanx to Sonny_Jim)
: To stay under water longer (and get a head start),
hold down Button 1 and Button 3 while diving
Notes: It is physically impossible to swim under 45 seconds - even if
EVERYTHING is done perfectly (Thanx to Mr Neil)
-------------------
4b) SKEET SHOOTING
-------------------
Controls: Button 1 - Shoot Left
Button 2 - Nothing
Button 3 - Shoot Right
Qualifying Times: 1ST MATCH - 1000 Points
2ND MATCH - 3000 Points
3RD MATCH - 4000 Points
4TH MATCH - 4200 Points
5TH MATCH - 4600 Points
6TH MATCH - 4800 Points
Tips: Press B1 to shoot at the left target,
press B3 to shoot at the right target.
: Try to hit lots consecutively, then bonus ones will fly out
(Bonus ones are worth 500 and 1000 points!)
: If you hit everything perfect then a bird will fly past
at the end. If you hit it you get 3000 more points!
: If you get a perfect on your first or second try,
then the next round of skeets will be different.
: On the 2nd round the bonus bird is worth 4000 points
: On the 3rd round the bonus bird is worth 6000 points
: If you get all the targets without missing, another
target (a duck) appears at the end. Shoot this with the
opposite fire button (ie if it appears left, shoot it
using the right button). Now a bird should fly down from
the top corner of the screen. Hit this as many times as
you can without missing for some bonus points. (Thanx to Sonny_Jim)
: In the second round, the first skeet can be shot with the "wrong"
sight and you will also hit the second skeet which appears
from the opposite side as the first, and you will score 500 points
for getting two with one shot. This sometimes doesnt work
---------------
4c) LONG HORSE
---------------
Controls: Button 1 - Spin in the air
Button 2 - Jump/Vault
Button 3 - Spin in the air
Qualifying Times: 1ST MATCH - 8.60
2ND MATCH - 9.20
3RD MATCH - 9.40
4TH MATCH - 9.50
5TH MATCH - 9.60
6TH MATCH - 9.80
Tips: Press B2 when you are at the end of the vault.
Then press B2 again when you are at the end of the long horse.
Then when you are in the air, repeatedly press B1 and B3.
This will spin you round.
Then just before you hit the ground,
try to spin into a good position to land.
: The more times you spin round the more points you get.
: You also get more points for an accurate landing.
: Try to get as far as possible on the springboard before
pressing Button 2. When on the horse, wait for the
athlete to be vertical before pressing the button to make
him push off - this gives him more height.
: You are given an extra 50 cm/s speed for each round of the game
to help complete more turns and to make the harder scores possible
to achieve
: The maximum score the judges can give you is 10.00
Notes: The scores awarded from the judges points are as follows:

4d) ARCHERY
------------
Controls: Button 1 - Choose Wind
Button 2 - Shoot
Button 3 - Choose Wind
Qualifying Times: 1ST MATCH - 2400
2ND MATCH - 3000
3RD MATCH - 3300
4TH MATCH - 3400
5TH MATCH - 3800
6TH MATCH - 4200
Tips: First, press B1 or B3 to set the wind.
: Then hold on B2 until the angle gets to about 5.0'
: Let go and hope it hits the middle of the board.
: You will need excellent timing for when to start holding B2
on, and when to stop holding it on.
: You get a "Nice" if you hit the middle of the target
: If you get 8 nices, in the first or second round, you will
move onto the next round where you can earn more points
: There is a point bonus for getting all "nices"
In the first round it is 3000 points
In the second round it is 4000 points
In the third round it is 6000 points
: If you get all "nices", the moving target
will be replaced by an apple, which can be hit for an
increasing number of bonus points.
: When the apples appear, there is no angle factor, you just
have to hit the button to fire the arrow
: If you do everything perfectly, the maximum score you can achieve
is 10800 pts in the first round, in the second it is 11800 pts
and in the third round it is 13800 pts.
----------------
4e) TRIPLE JUMP
----------------
Controls: Button 1 - Run
Button 2 - Jump
Button 3 - Run
Qualifying Times: 1ST MATCH - 12 metres
2ND MATCH - 14 metres 50
3RD MATCH - 15 metres 50
4TH MATCH - 16 metres
5TH MATCH - 18 metres
6TH MATCH - 19 metres
Tips: Press B1 and B3 repeatedly to gain speed.
: Then hold B2 on to get an angle of 35'.
: Then when he lands he will take one step forward.
: Hold B2 only when he has taken a step.
: Try to get it to 40' and repeat for the final jump.
: If you hold B2 on just as his foot hits the board,
it boosts you and makes you go a lot further. (Thanx to Sonny_Jim)
: The optimum angles for this event are - 35, 41, 45 in that order.
If you achieve them and also hit the board, you get a 3000-point
bonus and a red fighter plane flies across the top of the screen,
right to left and you hear a little jingle as it disappears and
you are awarded the points.
: You should initiate the next phase of a jump just as your athlete
lands and moves past the "upright" part of him being on the ground.
If you press the button as soon as he touches the ground,
you will lose a lot of distance.
: Any distance over 19 metres gets at least 10000 pts.
: The maximum distance you can jump is 20.11 metres
-------------------
4f) WEIGHT LIFTING
-------------------
Controls: Button 1 - Build up Power
Button 2 - Lift into position
Button 3 - Build up Power
Qualifying Times: 1ST MATCH - 150 kg
2ND MATCH - 165 kg
3RD MATCH - 180 kg
4TH MATCH - 195 kg
5TH MATCH - 210 kg
6TH MATCH - 225 kg
Tips: First, to choose your weight, press B1 to increase weight
and B2 to choose weight.
: To get past this event, I would recommend just picking the one above
the qualifying weight, as it is a very hard event.
: Then once youve picked your weight, press B1 and B3 repeatedly to
build up your power. When he has enough power, he will lift up the
weights and they will flash. Then whilst it is flashing, press B2.
Then he will stretch out his arms and you will have to keep pressing
B1 and B3 for him to keep it there for 3 Beeps. When the 3 Beeps are
over, youve qualified!
Notes: The speeds necessary to lift the weights are: (Thanx to Mr Neil)
Flyweight - 1200 cm/s (4500 pts)
Bantamweight - 1300 cm/s (4950 pts)
Featherweight - 1350 cm/s (5400 pts)
Lightweight - 1400 cm/s (5850 pts)
Middleweight - 1450 cm/s (6300 pts)
Middle heavyweight - 1500 cm/s (6750 pts)
Heavyweight - 1525 cm/s (7200 pts)
Super heavyweight (240kg) - 1550 cm/s (7800 pts)
: You get 9000 points for lifting 300kg and 12000 for lifting 400kg.
: One you have selected a weight, you cannot go back up the list and
choose a lighter one, even if you dont attempt it.
---------------
4g) POLE VAULT
---------------
Controls: Button 1 - Start Run
Button 2 - Vault / Let go of Pole
Button 3 - Start Run
Qualifying Times: 1ST MATCH - 5 Metres 65
2ND MATCH - 5 Metres 80
3RD MATCH - 5 Metres 86
4TH MATCH - 5 Metres 88
5TH MATCH - 5 Metres 90
6TH MATCH - 5 Metres 95
Tips: Be warned! This is the hardest event on the game!
: Press B1 or B3 to start the run. Then as he nears the silver bit,
hold B2 on and he will put the pole in the silver bit (the closer it
is, the more power he gets for the next bit...)
: Keep holding B2 on until he gets to the top of the bar, then let go.
He will then let go of the pole and vault over. Now hold on B2 just as
he gets half way over the bar and he will drift to the right and
hopefully he will drift over the bar and land on the mat!
: Oh and try not to hit the bar off =)
: Once your character has let go of the pole, it seems that bashing
B1 and B3 increases the height of the vault.
: It is impossible to jump higher than 5.96m without any codes or cheats
because you don't have enough speed (1,150cm/s) to be over the bar
once you release the pole. (Thanx to Mr Neil)
: The height incremement is 1 cm after 5 metres 85
: You also get a maximum speed increase for whichever match you are on
1st, 2nd rounds = 1050 cm/s. 3rd = 1100 cm/s. 4th, 5th, 6th = 1150
cm/s
==============================================================================
5) BONUSES
==============================================================================
Here are some hidden bonuses that have been found...
Bonus Turtles
--------------
In a 2-Player Freestyle Swimming race, if both players get
the same time (a tie) then 2 turtles pop up and give each
player a 3000 point bonus!
Bonus Frog
-----------
In the "Long Horse" if you land on your head without doing any somersaults,
you will bounce a few times on the floor and a frog will appear from the
roof and give you bonus points.
Bonus Cheerleaders
-------------------
In the weight lifting, once you have successfully lifted the weight and
the athlete drops the bar to the floor, if you press Button 1 and Button 3
simultaneously as it hits the floor, cheerleaders will appear and give you
a bonus. Your timing has to be extremely accurate. This is hard to do.
Bonus Mole
-----------
If you put your pole directly into the hole without losing any speed
and your vault is successful, a mole comes up from the ground to give you
1000 points. If you continue to do this in consecutive attempts,
then the moles bonus is 2000 points, 4000, 8000.
Bonus Plane
------------
In the triple jump, get the angles: 35 41 and 45 in that order if you
achieve them and also hit the board, you get a 3000-point
bonus and a red fighter plane flies across the top of the screen,
right to left and you hear a little jingle as it disappears and
ou are awarded the points. (Thanx to Mr Neil)

If there are any hidden bonuses that you know of,
please dont hesitate to e-mail me:

(I will give you credit in this FAQ)
==============================================================================
6) CHEATS
==============================================================================
Here are the cheat codes that have been found for the game
If you try any of these cheats, you try them at your own risk.
I am not responsible for any damage done.
I have tested these and messed about with the code of the game for a long
time
and I have never had a problem, but please be careful.
These work by changing the memory bytes (numbers) whilst the game is
running,
to different bytes.
This can make the game do different things like:
Level Skipping
Not breathing in the swimming
No False Starts
Auto 45 degress
Running Super Fast
You will need a program or a utility that allows you to change the bytes as
the game is running.
If you are using MAME, just copy the below cheats into a file called:
"cheat.dat" and put it in the main MAME directory

You can make up your own cheat codes if you like, it is just a matter of
picking a byte that the computer reads from during the game and changing it.
So, the byte at 3068 contains the value of the current event that the
player is on. The game increases this byte by one everytime you win an
event,
so that it knows which event to load you up on next.
If you change this to 01, it thinks that you are up to skeet shooting,
if it is set to 05, it thinks that you are up to weightlifting.
Here is a list of what some of the important bytes contain info for:
Byte 3068 - Current Event
Byte 3157 - Breath on swimming for P1 + P3
Byte 31B7 - Breath on swimming for P2 + P4
Byte 3502 - Number of tries on current event P1
Byte 3522 - Number of tries on current event P2
Byte 3542 - Number of tries on current event P3
Byte 3562 - Number of tries on current event P2
Byte 3503 - Number of false starts on current event P1
Byte 3523 - Number of false starts on current event P2
Byte 3543 - Number of false starts on current event P3
Byte 3564 - Number of false starts on current event P4
Byte 3070 - Skeet Shooting Timer
Byte 30C4 - Angle
Byte 30EF - Number of turns completed on the long horse
Byte 30B0 \
Byte 30B1 --- These are used for calculating the player's speed
Byte 30B2 /
So to fiddle about with the game, just change one of the above bytes and it
should make a difference
These codes are good to make the game easier, they let you understand how
the
games physics work better, and they are fun!
If you find out any other useful codes, please let me know, just e-mail me
at:
[email protected]

7) COMMENTS
==============================================================================
What a great game eh?
This is one of the very old games that has so much hidden stuff crammed into
it, I cant think of any others, most games around that time were just
rubbish (except Track & Field!)
If you have read this FAQ and not played the game yet, you really must have
a go at it, its lots of fun, especially against somebody else if you can.
Its pretty much what inspired all olympic-style games to have you hammering
the buttons as fast as you can.
Im pretty sure that Daley Thomsons Decathalon game for the spectrum was a
complete copy of this (although that was great too!)
Im not sure which one was released first, but im guessing that it was
Hyper Sports and Track & Field.
There was a sequel to this, called Konami'88 or '88 Games.
(At first I thought it meant a compilation of 88 games!)
This is also a great game, its got the best events of Track & Field and
Hyper Sports, with better sounds and graphics.
I might get around to doing an FAQ for that one day...
Also, for the PSone, International Track & Field was released. It was
basically the same as the other games, except that it has a few different
events, and it was in full 3D graphics. This game was great too,
and a spin-off-sequel to this game was made, Nagano Winter Olympics.
Nagano Winter olympics used the same engine as International Track & Field,
but the events werent as well done. There were too many repetitive skiing
events that were much to awkward to control. The curling event in this
game was very good though and lots of fun to play against a human.
A proper sequel to International Track & Field was released, named
International Track & Field 2. This game had a lot more events and had
slightly better graphics. The spring-board diving in this game was great
and brought back memories of the long horse on Hyper Sports
ESPN International Track & Field was then released for a few different
consoles and was also a fantastic game, using the same familiar style
that had worked so well for konami in the past.
Another olympic game, Sydney 2000, tried to copy konamis winning formula,
but they couldn't and the game was a flop.
Konami have made a range of games over their time, its hard to say what
type of developer they are when they make such varied games:
Hyper Sports - Fun Sports Sim
Track & Field - Fun Sports Sim
Simpsons - Fun 4 Player Arcade Classic
Metal Gear Solid - Serious stealthy classsic
Bishi Bashi - Crazy Mini Games with only 3 buttons!
ISS Pro Series - Serious Sports Sim
So, do Konami make serious games, or crazy games? Its very hard to tell.
I think they they must have different departments that made the different
games (like SEGA with their AM2, Sonic Team, Amusement Vision, etc).
Either way it looks like Konami is set to continue for a long time, with
lots more olympicy games to come soon!
