Gauntlet:  Dark Legacy FAQ, version 1, 5/5/00, copyrighted to Puni_sher aka
Doug Brown

First things first, this is an unofficial FAQ.  It does not have approval
from Midway Games.  Midway own everything, copyright, licensing, trademark,
and anything else I miss concerning the Gauntlet series.  I wrote this from
observation and from playing the game.  This is not to be used as a
substitute for the game, but a compliment.  I wrote this so others may enjoy
this game.  Please go play, and maybe Midway will make a sequel to this
sequel.

I.      Brief Overview of the game.

The main points of the game are to defeat Skorne and Garm, and also build
your characters to the maximum levels.  To accomplish, you must choose one
of eight fighting characters, find all twelve rune stones, and defeat the
eight bosses to obtain their keys.  In searching for the rune stones, you
may also find weapons that severely damage the bosses.  The eight fighting
characters are the Sorceress, Knight, Dwarf, Jester, Wizard, Valkryie,
Warrior,  and the Archer.  There are eight realms:  Sky, Dream, Ice,
Providence, Forest, Castle, Mountain, and Desert.  The bosses (respectively)
are:  Plague Fiend, Shadow Wraith, Yeti, Lich, Spider Queen, Chimera,
Dragon, and Genie.  The weapons are the Javelin of Blindness, the Lantern of
Revelation, the Parchment of Fire, the Book of Protection, The Poison
Bellows, the Legendary Ice Axe, the Scimitar of Decapitation, and the Lamp
of Dark Obscurement.  The first four realms I mentioned are new; the others
are new adaptations of the Gauntlet Legends Realms.  The twelve rune stones
are dispersed as two in each of the new realms and one in each of the old
realms.  After gaining all the keys and rune stones, you go to the Skorne
Realm.  In that realm, you first have to go to the Desecrated Temple, find
Soul Savior (a Boss Weapon), and the Alter of Skorne, and fight Skorne.
When you beat Skorne, you go the Underworld to beat him again.  After you
beat him, you have a vacation.  During which, Garm comes by and absorbs the
remains of Skorne.  You now have to go to the last “secret” realm, the Garm
stage, where there are three levels and the final Boss stage, and find a
Thirteenth Rune Stone to be able to fight and Defeat Garm.  After each
realm, the Guide (I still believe it is Sam Haien, the Celtic God of the
Dead) will congratulate you and give you a quick recap of how many rune
stones you found on that Realm.

II.     Movement, Control, and Buttons

If you ever played Gauntlet Legends, everything is basically the same.  For
those of you who haven’t, here is a summary of how to actually play.

To start the game, insert money (or tokens) in.  The game gives half-credit
for each quarter.  It takes one full credit (50 cents) to start.  Also, put
in your initials or code word that is three letters long, and a password
that has three numbers.  Remember them, they are your characters and you can
keep building them up to make them more powerful.  The players start with
500 health.  Each additional credit (or half-credit depending on the
settings of your particular game) gives 500 additional health to a max of
9999 health.

The game is set up with a joystick and four buttons, although you use three
to fight (the fourth is the start button).  There are four joystick and
button configurations on the playing console.  Each console is represented
by a color and classic elemental force. Player 1 is yellow and is
represented by light (life); Player 2:  blue, lightning (wind); Player 3:
red, fire;  Player 4, green, earth.  Also, Atari has sort of specified the
characters due to which Player is used (even though it is your discretion to
which color and character you play).  Yellow characters are the Wizard and
Sorceress, Blue:  Valkyrie and Knight, Red:  Warrior and Dwarf, Green:
Archer and Jester.

The Joystick moves in a 360-degree rotation and moves the character in the
way it is pointed, i.e. joystick moved up, the character moves up towards
the top of the screen.

The buttons are MAGIC, FIGHT, and TURBO.  When MAGIC is pressed, the
character uses the magic portions it collects or buys.  This is a radius
attack, and only goes a certain distance according to how powerful the
character is in their magic rating.  The FIGHT button is the button used to
attack the enemies.  When the character is far away, pressing this button
causes the character to throw an energy replica of his/her weapon or energy
bolt from the weapon.  When up close, the button causes hand-to-hand
fighting to happen.  TURBO is used to make your character to run faster for
a brief time and (NEW FEATURE) to block some attacks.  However, when using
this button, it decreases your super bar.  When you press buttons together,
special things happen.  Pressing FIGHT and MAGIC together lets your
character to throw the magic, so you can destroy enemies and generators
without being surrounded; but be careful, low magic ratings cause the
potions not to be thrown very far.  Pressing MAGIC and TURBO uses a potion
to make a protective magic shield.  It will protect you from enemies and
destroy those dumb enough to attack you while it is surrounding you (p.s.
more powerful magic ranking the longer it lasts and the bigger it gets).
Finally, pressing FIGHT and TURBO causes the character to do a super move.
Depending on how much super bar you have, you will do a turbo attack (level
one, in the green), a powerful radius attack (level two, in the yellow), or
a unidirectional attack (level 3, with red fully lighted up).  The names of
the respective attacks are mentioned in the character section.  NEW FEATURE:
When playing with someone else, pressing FIGHT and TURBO next to him or
her will let you do a tag-team combo attack.  Each Character has there own
combo attack.

III.    Characters

Each character is a specific type of fighter.  They have “secret” forms,
however.  To attain the “secret” characters, after playing the basic
character type and getting to level 10, go to character select and hold
TURBO while picking your character.  The “secret” characters have an animal
motif, so be prepared.  The names are tabled below.  Each character starts
at rank 1, and they advance in rank according to how many enemies are
destroyed.  They all have four skill areas:  Strength, Speed, Armor, and
Magic.  Strength is how much damage they can inflict.  Speed is how fast
they run and attack.  Armor is how much damage or resistance they can take.
Magic is how many enemies they can kill with a magic potion.  You can
collect lots of money and in the shop but power-ups for each of these
skills.  Personally, I suggest buying lots of speed, especially for the
Warrior and Dwarf.  These skills advance according to rank, usually up by 5
points, which is the same amount buying stats go up.  When the character
advances so many ranks, they get a promotion and a special power-up.
CHANGED FEATURE:  In Legends, the promotions happened at 10, 25, 50, 75, and
99, and happened during game play.  In Dark Legacy, the promotions happen
every 20 levels, and get recognition (every 10 levels) after defeating a
stage in a realm.  Also to note, that most armor type players gain actual
armor type pieces upon leveling up.  The end version, at least on the blue
side, looks very Roman.  I have made a table for this.  It is mostly
incomplete, but will be filled out in later versions.  Also, I have not seen
many people playing with the “old” characters, but I am assuming their
promotions go along the same lines they previously did.  Here’s the table:

IV.     Stage Descriptions and Rune Stone Locations

Now onto the guts of the game, the levels and where the Rune Stones and
Weapons are located.  When you start the game, you are at a screen that lets
you pick between levels and shows how many rune stones you have collected.
If you have beat the realm, the key will be floating there also and have
completed stamped over the key.  Each realm has at least one rune stone,
hidden weapon, and a money stage.  If you have trouble finding the rune
stones and have beat the stage, go back to it and you will have a “rune
stone thermometer.”  IMPORTANT NOTE:  whoever picks up the weapon must stay
alive.  The weapon is not transferable upon death.  Also to note, there are
three types of switches.  These switches will need to be flipped to be able
to access some places and find rune stones.  You can tell a switch is “off”
by its red color, “on” is green.  The three types of switches are:  toggles
on walls, lever/switches sticking out of the ground, and foot pads, lying on
the ground.  In the levels, you will find treasure chests and barrels.  The
chests will need keys to open them, but the barrels can be broken to be
opened.  In the chests and barrels, items will appear like keys (only in
barrels), money, special items, and even Death.  Be careful though, red
barrels will explode and hurt you, and green barrels contain poisonous
gases.

Each stage has specific enemies that fit that realms motif.  They appear
from generators.  When you hit a generator, the size of the enemy goes down
until the shack is destroyed, i.e. a big enemy from a level three generator,
and so down.  Also there are bombers, archers, and kamikazes in each realm.
Bombers will hide and throw bombs at you, Archers will shoot arrows, and
Kamikazes will try and run into you with a bomb strapped to there back.
There will be special adaptations in each realm that are dangerous, like
spikes and steam pits.  You will also find an “elemental force” creature in
each realm.  These “elementals” take on characteristics of the realm they
are from.  They start as a mound of “elemental force” fitting the realm
motif, when activated, they will attack you.  Be careful, they can take a
LOT of damage; only “exception” is the bear in the Ice realm.  THE MOST
DANGEROUS enemy in this game is DEATH.  Death will steal your experience
levels, instead of stealing life like he used to.  The only ones safe from
Death are a level 1 character, a person with a magic potion (magic kills
Death), and someone with Anti-Death power.  Anti-Death power will steal the
power from Death and give it to you, usually causing a power level to be
gained.

One final note, there are about two exits per stage.  If you want to find
the rune stones, weapons, and money stages, always skip the first exit.  You
may be able to come back to it.  However, most stages will not let you go
back the way you came, so get what you can when you can.

SKY REALM, Status: EASY
Major enemies:  Masked Orcs: Generators:  Outhouses
1)      with spears
2)      with Daggers in each hand
3)      with Bladed Gun, shots poison gas
Minor Enemies:  Blobs:  Generators:  Sewers
1)      Small
2)      Bigger, twice as big as level 1
Elemental:  Sewage
Adaptations:  Gas Vents, Spikes, and Rolling Barrels

Stages:  Spire-Docks-Shipyard-Plague Fiend

Spire:  Weapon Location:  The Javelin of Blindness is located on this stage.
Go to the First Exit.  Hit the Toggle.  Start walking up the spire, watch
out for the rolling barrels.  You come to a place with a toggle on the wall.
Hit the toggle.  A platform should be lifted.  Go on the platform and hit
the switch on it.  The wall on the spire should fall.  You will see two
toggles, one in a cage.  Hit the one not in the cage.  Walk down the spire a
little where there is a platform with a switch.  Hit it and walk back to the
wall.  The cage is gone, so hit the last toggle, and then pick up the
Javelin.

Docks:  RUNE STONE LOCATION AND MONEY STAGE.  First, find the first exit.
Go past it.  On the next platform, there is a section that is sunk.  Go
through the locked gate and hit the switch right after it.  Go back down and
the section is up.  It has a switch and chest on it.  Hit the switch.  A
cage should open up with a chest at it (the chest may not be there).  Break
the back wall.  Instant Rune Stone.  After getting rune stone, go past the
unlocked gate and continue on up.  You will see in a little while a walk way
with a mast between it.  Walk on the walkway (it goes left to right) and hit
the switch.  Walk a little backwards and go on to the platform that got
elevated.  It is in the corner away from the switch.  It is called Cloud
Nine.  You stand on the clouds and try and catch the coins.  Pretty
difficult.

Shipyard:  RUNE STONE LOCATION.  Once again, go past the First exit.  You
will go towards a ship, which has the Rune Stone on a platform hanging off
the side.  Walk with the edge of the ship past some spikes.  You will reach
a part where the Rune Stone should be located.  Go up and destroy a box.  It
hides the toggle that needs to be hit in order to raise the Rune Stone’s
platform.  Hit the toggle and get the Rune Stone.

Plague Fiend:  BOSS:  A big blob with one eye.  It attacks by spitting a
piece of itself at you, sprays itself in an arc, and forces the ooze in the
three barrels to splash out at you.  The Javelin blinds the Fiend for a
while and takes one fourth of its health.  My suggestion is to buy Rapid
Fire and stand as far back between the middle and far right barrels as you
can and just fire like crazy.

MOUNTAIN REALM, Status:  EASY
Major Enemies:  Green Orcs;  Generators:  Shacks
1)      with spears in hands
2)      with scimitars in each hand
3)      with double-bladed axes
Second Major Enemies:  Lava Dragons:  Generators:  Lava Mounds
1)      Silver
2)      Blue with red stripes
3)      Red, spits lava balls
Minor Enemies:  Scorpions; Generators:  Mounds of Skulls and Bones
1)      purple
2)      red
Elemental:  Stone
Adaptations:  Fire Vents, Falling Boulders

Levels:  Valley-Peak-Cliff-Cave-Cavern-Dragon

Peak:  WEAPON LOCATION:  Go up about four hills.  You will see a shack with
a barrel in front of it.  The barrel is Death, by the way.  Remember the
shack.  Go to the right and you will see a locked gate.  Go through the gate
and up to where the toggle is.  Hit the toggle and go back to the shack.
The shack should be gone and in its place is the Legendary Ice Axe.

Cave:  RUNE STONE LOCATION:  Walk across the small stream of lava, using the
small bridge of stone.  Walk along that small corridor until you come to the
corner, where the right wall disappears into a bigger area.  Destroy the
left wall/corner.  There will be the rune stone and a treasure chest.

Cavern:  MONEY STAGE LOCATION:  Go to the exit.  Hit the toggle on the wall.
Come down and right for a little to where you see a switch with a Pogo egg
right by it.   Hit the switch, it will cause a small elevator to come up.
Get on it, go down and walk on the little pathway to the money stage:
Gauntlet Treasure Room.

Dragon:  BOSS:  Pretty much the same from last time.  Attacks by spiting
fireballs, flame sweep, stomping and flapping wings.  Buy rapid fire and
have the Ice Axe and you’ll be wondering why this guy is still considered a
boss.  The Ice Axe takes one-fourth his life, and freezes him so he cannot
attack.  He gets unfroze after about 50% damage has been done.

PROVINCE REALM, Status:  MEDIUM
Major enemies:  Bluish Orc Zombies; Generators:  Tombstones
1)      with pitchforks
2)      with sickles in each hand
3)      with Bak’leths (for those Trekkies out there)
Second Major enemies:  Skeletons; Generators:  Red and White tents
1)      no armor with spears
2)      some red armor with two swords
3)      Big, have red armor, carries a Zwei-hander (two-handed sword)
Minor enemies:  Maggots; Generators:  Rotting animal corpses
1)      whitish, no mouth
2)      grayish, small mouth
Second Minor enemies:  Skeletal Dogs; Generators: Red and White dog tents
1)      two-legged white
2)      four-legged, red armor
Elemental:  Machine (Wheat Thrasher)
Adaptation:  Spikes, Buzz saws, Steam vents

Levels:  Fields-Town-Cemetery-Mausoleum-Lich

Fields:  RUNE STONE HERE.  Go past the first exit.  Find the Sun Dial.  Walk
on the Sun dial.  It will move, bringing a platform on the left up.  Go to
the platform, it has a treasure chest on top of a foot pad.  Hit the foot
pad.  The sun dial will now rise up, revealing a Rune Stone.

Town:  RUNE STONE HERE.  Walk through the town until you find a scaffold
(you know, the thing people where hung from).  There is a switch on it.  Hit
the switch.  The trapdoor will open and cause a block (directly across from
the scaffold) with a foot pad to lower.  Get off the scaffold, go hit the
foot pad.  This will cause the Rune Stone to rise up from the trap door on
the scaffold.  Go get it off the scaffold and enjoy.

Cemetery:  MONEY STAGE HERE.  Go past the first exit.  On the screen with
the water fountain/pool, you will be able to see, but not get to the money
stage.  Remember about where it is.  Continue on until you reach a bridge
with a Turbo Charger.  Cross the bridge, unlock the gate, and instant money
stage.  Called the Crops.

Mausoleum:  WEAPON LOCATION.  Go to the second exit.  You will see the Book
of Protection hanging a little low.  Destroy the wall behind the exit to
reveal a foot pad.  Activate the pad and get the Book from the raised
platform.

Lich:  BOSS:  Man, this guy is annoying.  He is an extremely tall zombie
deal with a huge double-bladed axe.  He attacks by jumping on you, spinning
around in a circle swinging his axe, slamming his axe into the ground
causing small earthquakes, causing a skeletal hand to come out and grab you
slowing you down, and spiting out part of himself which generators one or
two maggots.  The Book of Protection deals about one-fourth damage on the
Lich, and protects you from his attacks for a while.  However, if playing
with others, the Book WILL NOT protect them also.  Buy Rapid Fire and Speed
Stats before fighting him, because you need to attack and run a lot.

CASTLE REALM:  Status:  MEDIUM
Major enemies:  Blue Orcs;  Generators:  Stone Archways
1)      with spears
2)      with butcher knives in each hand
3)      with double-bladed axe
Second Major enemies:  Suits of Armor;  Generators:  Statues of Armor
1)      silver with sword
2)      grey with battle axe
3)      black with broad sword
Minor enemies:  Rats; Generators:  Mounds of dirt
1)      blue
2)      brown
Elemental:  White Stone
Adaptation:  Spikes and Blades from ground, Energy gates, flailing tentacles

Levels:  Castle-Dungeon-Armory-Treasury-Chimera

Castle Courtyard:  RUNE STONE HERE.  On the moat, the Rune Stone will be on
a floating platform.   Cross the bridge above the moat, go through locked
gate.  In the corner is a toggle, active the toggle.  Go back across bridge.
A small walkway will now be available to reach the Rune Stone.

Dungeon:  WEAPON LOCATION.  Before walking on the long staircase to reach
the exit, hit the toggle on the wall in front of the staircase.  Then head
to the last wall (part of the staircase, right after unlocking the gate).
Destroy the wall and get the Scimitar of Decapitation.

Armory:  MONEY STAGE HERE:  Find the open pit with footpads all around it.
Cross it.  Normally, when a player gets here they are on the bottom/left
area after taking stairs down.  Go straight across, keep heading up, and
then turn left into a dead end.  The dead end has the Money Stage, Space
Station.

Chimera:  BOSS:  Like in Legends, the Chimera has three heads that attack
with differing elements.  Snake-acid, Lion-fire, Eagle-lightning.  They
sweep with them, cause a wind blast with their wings and spit fireballs.
The Scimitar of Decapitation instantly kills the Lions head so you need only
worry about the Snake and Eagle heads.  Rapid fire and Triple shot it to
death.  In Legends, buying a Reflective Shield help kill it faster, but this
one does not spit fireballs all that often.  Buy one if you want, although
it might just go to waste.

FOREST REALM, Status:  MEDIUM
Major enemies:  Biped Reptiles; Generators:  Huts.
1)      with spears
2)      with spiked clubs in each hand
3)      with butcher knife axe
Second Major enemies:  Living Trees; Generators:  Tree Stumps
1)      Small and pale
2)      Dark with vegetation
3)      Brown with arms at top
Minor enemies:  Spiders; Generators: Flowers.
1)      green and black
2)      red and black
Elemental:  Vegetation
Adaptation:  Acid vents, Spiked plants, Pendulums Swinging Logs

Levels:  Swamp-Roots-Tree-Branches-Spider Queen

Swamp:  RUNE STONE HERE:  Go just past the first exit.  You will see a
locked gate with a switch on its right.  Hit the switch, unlock the gate,
cross the platform that just rose.  Go to the Horseshoe bend rock formation
and destroy the middle part.  Grab the Rune Stone to help ru(i)ne Skorne’s
day.

Roots:  MONEY STAGE HERE:  Very easy to find.  Find the Hanging rope bridge.
Go right over the stump, stairs on either side, up to the locked gate.
Unlock the gate, go through, and come down.  When you went as far down as
possible, head left, and there it is.  On a side note, if you reach the
first elevator deal in this stage, ya’ll have gone to far.  Money stage is
once again the Psychedelic Stun-Chamber.  WARNING:  DO NOT go here if you
get sick at multi-colored flashing lights or are epileptic.  It is full of
flashing and changing colors that are very bright, think of a VERY bad
sixties show change out animation, and you get the general idea.

Branches:  WEAPON LOCATION:  Go past the first exit, you will start walking
on a lot of branches and stumps.  You will get to a screen that has two
gates and one switch on the right of the screen right after getting of the
branch.  Hit the switch and it will lower the first gate.  In that gate
enclosed space is the Toxic Bellows.

Spider Queen:  BOSS:  Pretty much the same from Legends, A spider centaur
creature that spits acid, web balls, charges at you, and whips you with an
energy whip up close.  Strategy for this boss:  RUN LIKE HELL and fire,
repeat as often as necessary.  The Toxic Bellows take ¼ of her damage and
turns her green.  I think it also slows her down somewhat.

ICE REALM:  Status:  HARD
Major enemies:  Blue Orc Miners; Generators:  Mine shafts (holes with
ladders).
1)      with pole-arm
2)      with pick-axes, each hand
3)      with pick-axe, scrapper combination
Second Major enemies:  Worms; Generators:  Holes in ground
1)      purple and small
2)      light blue and medium, has four red “eyes”
3)      Dark blue, spits its “teeth” at you
Minor enemies:  Wolves; Generators:  Caves
1)      Brown
2)      Greyish/Silver
Elemental:  Polar Bear
Adaptation:  Steam Vents, Moving and falling Mining Carts.

Levels:  Docks-Camp-Mine-Fissure-Yeti

Docks:  RUNE STONE HERE:  Don’t go on the first exit.  Keep going until you
walk down the Mining Cart Ramp (It will be the Second ramp you walk on, the
first will head upwards).  When you reach the bottom, head to the right and
walk up the snow bank.  You will reach a tower platform on the left with a
switch.  Hit the switch and then progress.  Keep going until the screen
changes POV.  Then head backwards (sort of just turn around) where you reach
a locked gate.  Unlock the gate and get the Rune Stone in the center of the
tower platform.

Camp:  WEAPON LOCATION:  Get to the Furnace, right above the double cages.
Walk along the side of the furnace, going up.  Hitting all the toggles and
switches.  When you reach the very top, the Parchment of Fire will be
waiting for you.  I have also got it from inside the furnace, by hitting one
specific toggle and it caused the furnace to rotate so a small door opened
into the furnace.  I do not know why this happened, maybe a glitch.

Mine:  MONEY STAGE HERE:  Go to the first exit.  You need to head to the
left, behind the exit.  Keep going tell you reach a series of teleport pads.
Use all the pads, and head to a small elevator.  Go up on the elevator and
head northwards, you will hit the Money Stage quickly.  It is called the
Docks.

Fissure:  RUNE STONE HERE:  O.k. this level is tricky, there are so many
different ways to reach the exit it’s not funny.  This is the most
simplistic way I have found.  When you start the stage, ALWAYS walk along
the LEFT WALL.  If you want to kill the enemies on the sides, throw magic,
or go fight them, BUT get back to the wall.  Keep doing this until you reach
a platform that you can walk down on in a S-formation.  Head south, reaching
a locked gate.  Go through the gate and then head west (to the left), walk
over a small bridge (Make sure you have green glowing rocks on your
characters right.), past a small waterfall (remember), and continue until
you reach a “solid” rock wall.  Break the wall at the end, and go hit the
footpad.  This will cause the rest of the wall to drop down.  On the wall is
a barrel on top of a footpad, break the barrel, activate the footpad.  Go
back to the waterfall and walk on the left side, there is a small path.
Walk along the path until you get the Rune Stone.

Yeti:  BOSS:  A giant yeti that looks like a Wampa from Star Wars:  the
Empire Strikes Back.  He attacks by stomping on the ground--sending a
shockwave, hitting the ground with its fist causing ice blocks to appear in
front of you, slamming his fist into the sides of his mountain making ice
boulders roll towards you, and breathing in his hand making an ice boulder
which he then bowls it towards you.  The Parchment of Fire deals about
one-fourth damage to it and creates a fire barrier causing him only to
attack with his ground stomp attack.  Buy Rapid fire to finish him off
quickly.

DREAM REALM, Status:  SICK, I mean, HARD
Major enemies:  Demons; Generators:  Exit-like Portals
1)      blue, with spear
2)      Red and blue, four-armed, sword in each hand
3)      Red with big axe
Second Major enemies:  Suits of Armor;  Generators:  Statues of Armor
1)      silver with sword
2)      grey with battle axe
3)      black with broad sword
Minor enemies:  Creeping Hands; Generators:  Boxes
1)      green
2)      blue
Elemental:  Nightmare
Adaptation:  Spikes, Roller coaster seats, Merry-go-round,  the whole last
level

Levels:  Carnival-House-Illusion-Wraith

Carnival:  RUNE STONE HERE:  Walk all the way on the Roller coaster track.
When you have finished that, you will find a trailer with a spike pit in
front of it and a switch to the side hit the switch.  You will see the doors
of the trailer opening up to reveal a Rune Stone behind a chain-link fence
in the trailer.  Back up and go into the nearest carnival tent.  Find the
switch in there and throw it.  Go back outside the tent and walk to the
right of the trailer.  You will see a switch and a barrel. Hit the switch.
This will cause the chain-link to move and now you can get the Rune Stone.

House:  RUNE STONE HERE:  Go through the House until you find some beds.  At
the first bed, destroy the nearby nightstand.  It will reveal a footpad.
Activate the footpad, which will cause the first bed to rise and reveal a
second footpad.  Hit that footpad and get to the second bed.  The Rune Stone
is on the second bed and now can be gotten.

Illusion:  WEAPON AND MONEY STAGE LOCATION:  Note:  this level makes this
whole realm sick.  It constantly moves and shifts in scenery, even more so
than the normal levels.  First off, the Money Stage, When you start you will
easily find the door to the money stage.  It is floating off in space by
itself.  How to get to it?-walk on “empty” space until you reach it.  Not
much of a walk, from the corner of the seen platform nearest to the door, go
right, up, and left into the door.  The Money Stage is called Pojo’s
Henhouse.  O.k. Now to get the Weapon; After the money stage, continue on
until you see a toggle on the side of a building, with no apparent way to
reach it.  Walk on “empty” space to flip it.  This will cause a small ramp
to appear.  Walk up the ramp and hit the switches there.  Remember which
corner of the fountain screen where you just flipped everything.  Now
continue with the stage until you reach a part that was a switch right
before a Magic Marker platform, connected to the fountain switch.  Hit the
switch, DON’T get on the platform.  Go back to where the Weapon should be
(in the far left corner directly cross-corner to where you just flipped the
switch).  Congrats, you just got the Lantern of Revelation.

Wraith:  BOSS:  A gigantic shadow with four spikes coming out each side of
his back.  He looks like an evil version of the Guide.  He attacks by
throwing a huge black with green fireball, a smogish slow-down fireball,
thrusts his spikes at you on side only at a time, and finally, what is to be
considered shadow snakes, he lets about six of these things loose at once
and they go from him to the back of the screen quickly.  The Lantern of
Revelation deals one-fourth damage to him and creates a light screen that
blocks all his attacks except his spike thrust.  Buy rapid fire and stand in
the direct middle of the screen and unload on him.  Standing in the middle
lets you evade both types of spike thrusts without moving around.

DESERT REALM, Status:  HARD
Major enemies:  Grey Orcs; Generators:  Yellow stone archways
1)      with spears
2)      with swords in each hand
3)      with magic throwing ability
Second Major enemies:  Mummies;  Generators:  Sarcophaguses (Mummy coffins)
1)      brown, very few wrappings
2)      white, few wrappings
3)      has blue headdress
Minor enemies:  Snakes; Generators:  Blue vases
1)      with blue neck stripes
2)      with yellow neck stripes
Elemental:  Sand
Adaptations:  Steam vents, Spikes, Swinging Gates, Energy gates

Levels:  Ruins-Temple-Pyramid-Tomb-Genie

NOTE:  For those of you who have played Gauntlet Legends, locating the Rune
Stone, Weapon, and Money Stage, it will be easy to find.  Those that
haven’t, it will be difficult, but not too hard.  For the Legends Players,
The Weapon is where the Second Rune Stone was, the Money Stage is where the
Third Rune Stone was, and the Rune Stone is where the Money Stage used to
be.  I’ll now describe them in more detail.  Also, the switches look a lot
different than the other realms.

Temple:  There will be a screen that has enemies coming from all sides and
in the dead center will be a podium with the weapon on it.  You will have
already walked around it on the walls surrounding this area.  Find the
podium and go to the right of it (or head towards the top of the screen).
There will be a wall that you can destroy and reveal a footpad.  Activate
the footpad and go back to the podium.  You can now obtain the Lamp of Dark
Obstruction.

Pyramid: MONEY STAGE HERE:  Not worth the effort of going, but go if you
want.  First, near the beginning of the game, you will see a small ramp with
a collection of sand in the corner.  Go up the ramp and open both locked
walls.  The will be a switch and you can see a YELLOW potion.  Hit the
switch and watch the potion move upwards.  Now continue on with the stage
until you finish walking on the catwalk.  Directly after finishing with the
catwalk, head down two different slopes in a Z-formation (one slope is the
end of the catwalk).  You will see a toggle and a treasure chest in a
chain-linked gate.  Head downwards where you will see a toggle.  Head back
towards the chest and toggle, flip it.  Now head downwards again till you
pass through an archway.  Stay on the left side and walk downwards.  Be
careful there is a Death standing on a slightly elevated platform.  You will
reach a spike trap and a YELLOW potion.  Walk all the way down the smaller
version of a catwalk and have fun on the little screen, the money stage is
there.  It is the Gauntlet Lab, and not much money can be obtained here.

Tomb:  RUNE STONE HERE:  Get to the First Exit, now go back down the stairs
you went up to reach the exit.  Follow the wall that is on your characters
left side (which will be on the right side of the screen).  Keep following
it around any turns.  There will eventually be a part that turns into an
up-wards ramp.  Go up the ramp and walk on the wall.  Looking into the pit
you will see the Rune Stone, but cannot get it yet.  Walk until you reach a
Switch and activate it.  This will let a wall drop so you can get to the
Rune Stone.  Walk back towards the First Exit.  On the way, you will see an
opening that was not there previously.  Walk into the room and the Rune
Stone is in the corner.

Genie:  Same cycloptic half-body genie with pigtail, goatee, and two
scimitars.  Same attacks from Legend but quicker.  He has a sword swipe if
you get close.  He shoots an eye blast, eye laser sweep, and creates
tornadoes against you.  The Lamp of Dark Obstruction deals ¼ damage and
temporarily blinds him so he cannot aim at you.  Buy Rapid fire and move
around a lot.  A neat trick is if you buy reflective shield, you can send
his eye blasts and tornadoes back at him, although it is sort of pointless.

SKORNE REALM:  Status:  Deadly
After getting all eight keys, it unlocks the final realm, Skorne’s.  You
have to first go to the Temple of Desecration, and beat that Skorne, then
the Underworld beat that Skorne, then it unlocks Garm’s Battlefield that has
four levels in itself.  When you chose this realm latter, you can chose
between the three mini-realms:  Temple, Underworld, or Battlefield.

TEMPLE REALM

Temple: Enemies:  All second level enemies from all eight realms.
Generators:  Purple teleportation platforms, need two hits to destroy.
WEAPON LOCATION:  Near the exit, look at the right side of the screen.  You
will see the Weapon floating of on the side.  Go up to the exit and hit the
footpad on the right to be able to get it.  Go back to the weapon and attain
it.  It is called Soul Savior.
HINT:  Buy lots of potions and keys.  Buy Potions because you get swarmed by
enemies quickly, and keys because there are no keys, but tons of treasure
chests.

Alter of Skorne:  BOSS:  Just like Legends, Ugly Bat-winged horned Demon
with a Red and Yellow color Scheme.  Attacks with wings, two types of
fireballs, picks you up and slams you if you get too close, and energy
draining vortex around you when he slams his fist into the ground.  The Soul
Savior drains one-fourth his life and blocks all his abilities except his
vortex drain.  Buy lots of rapid fire and blow him away.

UNDERWORLD REALM:  MUST HAVE ALL TWELVE RUNE STONES.

Gates:  Enemies:  all third level enemies from all eight realms
Generators:  Purple teleportation pads, three hits destroy them
Elementals:  Magma, Up to six at one time at the end of stage, do not have
to fight them though.
HINTS:  Buy crap load of potions.  One person in you group (if playing by
yourself, your elected) need only buy eight potions.  There is a potion at
the very beginning.  There are tons of power-ups throughout this stage, find
them if you want.

Throne of Skorne:  Just like last time, except no Soul Savior and has a face
beam attack and a rapid “needle” attack now.

After defeating Skorne, the Guide takes you to his tower for a party.  While
there, the screen shows animation about a guy in a Hooded monks robe
absorbing Skorne’s remains and becoming a HUGE grey skinned Skorne
look-alike.  The Guide tells you to go after him and find the THIRTEENTH
Rune Stone.

BATTLEFIELD OF GARM
Major enemies:  Skeletons; Generators:  Red and White tents
1)      no armor with spears
2)      some red armor with two swords
3)      Big, have red armor, carries a Zwei-hander (two-handed sword)
Minor enemies:  Skeletal Dogs; Generators: Red and White dog tents
1)      two-legged white
2)      four-legged, red armor
Elemental:  Machine (Wheat Thrasher)
Adaptation:  Spikes, Buzz saws, Fire vents, Fire Balls in Sky

Levels:  Trenches-Tower-Fortress-Garm’s Citadel

Tower:  THRITEENTH RUNE STONE HERE:  Go to the first exit.  Activate the
switch that lowers the wall.  Walk on that path until you reach a
horse-bend.  Break the wall to reveal the Rune Stone.  If you need more
help, it is in the middle of the path between the first exit and a
cat-headed rock face, where you first see the second exit.

Fortress:  MONEY STAGE HERE:  After a scene where there are 3 to four
teleport pads, you have to walk around a hill on a catwalk.  When you get
off, you will see an elevator that will cover a spike-pit when it comes
down.  It will be situated on the left of the screen.  Head up and activate
a switch.  It will raise a small rock platform that will allow you to get to
the money stage called the Trenches.  More trouble than it’s worth to get
here.  Note:  if you get to a screen you have to open a series of doors on
the side of the wall with footpads and toggles, you have gone too far.  Head
back down the elevator that took you there.

Garm’s Citadel:  BOSS:  If you thought Skorne was tough, you ain’t seen
nothing yet.  This guy takes up the WHOLE screen, and that’s just his life
bar.  His attacks do major damage.  He has an eye beam type deal and can
point a fireball at you.  He also causes a ground wave that does major
damage.  The most damaging move he does is when he starts falling apart.
His remains turn into helpers that throw lightening.  These helpers take
about eight-hits to destroy, and still attack you when they die.  They
become an evil-version of the Wizard’s Demon Skull attack against you.   My
suggestion:  Crap load of rapid fire, triple-shot, reflective shield, and
gold invulnerability if you want.  But the most important thing,  AT LEAST
TEN BUCKS IN HEALTH!!!

V.      Money and Items

NOTE:  The only differences between the items and money of Legends and Dark
Legacy are the Boss Weapons, a new item called Turbo Boost, Potions cost 500
instead of 350, and that neither Skorne’s nor Garm give you money after
defeating them.  All Legends players can skip this section if they want.  I
will still describe everything else for everyone else, though.

The money is called gold in the game.  How much gold you have is shown right
next to your health on the playing screen.  There are ample opportunities to
increase your wealth.  There are treasure chests and brown barrels all over
the place in levels, and most have gold in them.  There are silver chests
that rotate what is inside, so be careful.  There are times when gold is
just lying around.  The bosses, except the Skorne’s and Garm, give you money
upon their defeat.  Also, when you get a Rune Stone you already have, you
get 500 gold, instead of the 1000 gold in Legends.  And, most importantly,
there are secret stages in which there are tons of gold.  Here is a
breakdown of the dollar values of the respective opportunities.

Treasure Chests-100                         Free-lying gold:  greenish-200
Free-lying gold:  yellowish-100       Bronze coins-50
Silver Coins-100                              Gold Coins-500

There are many items available to help power you up.  Some are free
floating, and some are in chests or barrels, and some you can buy at the
shop you go to after every level.  I’ll talk about the shop first, give you
the items, how much they cost, and then tell you what they do.  After that,
I’ll talk about the items you can pick up along the way.

Shop

Key 250                          Reflective Shield   1000
Reflective Shot 450        Three-way Shot 1200
Potion 500                       Phoenix Familiar 1300
Growth 600                     Rapid Fire 1400
Strength 800                    Thunder Hammer 1500
Speed 800                        Electric Shield 1600
Armor 800                       Firewall Shield 1800
Magic 800                       Gold Invulnerability 2000

Key:  Use this to open doors, gates, and treasure chests.  Maximum of Nine.
When you die, you leave these for other players.  Easy to find in levels.

Reflective Shot:  Looks like a bent arrow.  Causes your shots to bounce off
walls.  Pretty common in levels.

Potion:  Use MAGIC button to use these.  They come in four colors:  shining
yellow, gassy green, lightning blue, and flaming red (apple).  Maximum of
Nine.  When dead, they cannot be transferred to other players.  Multiple
places in levels.

Growth:  Little purple ball that expands and contracts.  Makes you as tall
as an elemental.  Lasts about a minute.  Rare in levels.

Strength:  It increases damage done to others.  Increases by 5 stats

Speed:  It increases how fast you run, attack, and throw weapons.  Increases
by 5 stats

Armor:  It increases how much damage you can take.  Increases by 5 stats

Magic:  It increases how many enemies can be killed by potion and radius of
potion attack.  Increases by 5 stats

Reflective Shield:  A big shield with a mirror.  Bounces arrows, bombs, and
fireballs back at originators.  Can be found in levels

Three-way Shot: A spinning icon with three points.  It causes your thrown
weapon to be split so it goes in three directions, in a forward motion.  Can
find this on levels.

Phoenix Familiar: A yellow glowing bird that follows you around and spits
fireballs when you throw you weapon.  Nice helper.  Can be found on levels.

Rapid Fire: A purple ball of energy.  It makes you shot about five times
faster and attack in close quarters extremely fast.  Can be found in levels.

Thunder Hammer: Big blue hammer, jokingly called Thor's Hammer.  When FIGHT
button is pushed, the character with hammer slams it into the ground and
kills all enemies, destroys all generators, and opens all barrels.
Extremely powerful.  MAJOR limitation: can only be used three times.

Electric Shield: A shield with a lightning bolt across the front.  Sends a
lightning bolt to any enemies in front of it.  Can be found on levels.

Firewall Shield: A round gold shield.  When moving, a wall of fire covers
the character from head to toe.  Destroys any enemies that get ran into.  My
favorite power up because it is so cool and powerful.  Can find this on many
levels.

Gold Invulnerability: A cube of golden energy.  It stops health from
decreasing and causes health to actually increase when hit.  Can find this
on a few levels.

Now onto those items that are only on the Levels.

Turbo Boost:  An upside-down pyramid shape that rotates colors and sizes.
Has a T on it.  Causes super bar meter to instantly get full to level 3.

Shrink Enemies: A spinning pike that shrinks enemies to half their size.

Super shot: Huge crossbow with a big yellow arrow.  Can be fired three to
five times.  Extremely powerful.

Amulets: Acid, Light, Fire, and Lightning: Looks like a ball of whatever it
is on a chain.  Adds special effect on weapon hits.

Breath: Acid, Fire, lightning: Looks like a cloud of whatever it is. Can
shoot out and destroy enemies directly in front of you.  Can only be used
five times.  Pretty
Powerful.

Pojo egg: An egg that has its top coming off with light inside.  Turns
player into Pojo, the fighting chicken.  It attacks with a fireball breath
attack and its super can be used at level two.  He jumps up into the air and
breaths fire.  Cannot use magic when Pojo-ized.
Great handicap and humiliation device.  WARNING:  When Pojo-ized, do not eat
the chicken leg meat, it is poisonous to Pojo.  It takes about 50 health
points.  Think Cannibalism, to understand why.

Five-way Shot: Just like Three-way shot except it has five post/points on
the icon and shoots in five directions.

Time-Stopper:      Is an hourglass that freezes enemies in their place.  Lasts
only a few seconds.

X-ray Glasses: Let’s you see into barrels and treasure chests.

Meat:   Looks like a ham, a chicken leg, a raw rib-eye steak,  and a rack of
ribs.  It adds one hundred health points to your life.

Fruit:  Looks like an apple, a bunch of bananas, a pineapple, or a slice of
watermelon.  It adds 50 health points to your life.  HINT: If you have X-ray
glasses and see Death in a chest or barrel, use magic.  It turns him into an
apple.

Anti-Death Power: Looks like a halo.  It allows you to suck the experience
out of Death.  Usually about 1 level.

Poison Food: A green apple with a skull and crossbones on it.  It takes your
life. About 50 points.

Extra Speed Shoes: Shoes with wings on them.  It gives you about 300-350
points of speed for about a minute and a half.

Limited Levitation: A pair of white wings.  It lets you walk across most
realm adaptations without takings damage.

Limited Invisibility:  A spinning whitish clear pike.  Turns you into a
ghost.  You can see you character, but most of the enemies cannot.

It:  This power up is a power down.  It has two different forms.  The first
form is a floating yellow ball, sort of a miniature sun.  It stays in this
form until it hits one of the players.  It then turns into a sign that says
IT that is stuck to the back of a player.  There is a way to get it off of
you.  Touch another player and let them be it.  What IT does is make you the
target of all the enemies.  The enemies will go after you before anyone
else.

The next items are the Boss Weapons.  Although already discussed, I think
they need to be separated into their respective items once again.

The Javelin of Blindness:  Use on the Plague Fiend.  Find in the Spire level
of the Sky Realm.  Blinds the Fiend and deals ¼ damage to it.

The Lantern of Revelation:  Use on the Shadow Wraith.  Find in the Illusion
level of the Dream Realm.  Creates a wall of light that prevents most
attacks and deals ¼ damage.

The Parchment of Fire:  Use on the Yeti.  Find in the Camp level of the Ice
Realm.  Creates wall of fire that prevents most attacks and deals ¼ damage.

The Book of Protection:  Use on the Lich.  Find in the Mausoleum level of
the Province Realm.  Deals ¼ damage and freezes him for small amount of
time.

The Poison Bellows:  Use on the Spider Queen.  Find in the Branches level of
the Forest Realm.  Deals ¼ damage and poisons her.  Also slows her down a
little.

The Legendary Ice Axe:  Use on the Dragon.  Find in the Peak level of the
Mountain Realm.  Deals ¼ damage and totally freezes dragon for a decent
amount of time.

The Scimitar of Decapitation:  Use on the Chimera.  Find in the Dungeon
level of the Castle Realm.  Decapitates Lion’s head automatically, dealing
1/3 damage.

The Lamp of Dark Obscurement:  Use on the Genie.  Find in the Temple level
of the Desert Realm.  Blinds the Genie for a short period of time and deals
insignificant amount of damage.

The Soul Savior:  Use on the first Skorne.  Find in the Temple level of the
Skorne Realm.  Deals ¼ damage and creates light screen that prohibits
majority of his moves.

The next few items can only be attained when you defeat Skorne in the Temple
Realm.  They are his armor that allows him to live and attack in the above
world, and are not necessary in the underworld.
</pre><pre id="faqspan-2">
The Horns of Skorne: The horns Skorne wears.  Has the same ability as fire
breath.  Lasts a long time.

The Mask of Skorne: The faceplate Skorne wears.  Same as Horns of Skorne.

The Gauntlets of Skorne: One has a blue gem, the other a green gem.  It
allows you to throw fireballs of the respective color.  Fairly powerful,
last a long time, but not as long as the Horns or Mask.

VI.     Credits and Versions

Thanks to Midway for creating this game.  Also to the Blazer Arcade at the
University of Alabama at Birmingham and Sunshine Enterprises for getting and
bringing it.  Special thanks to all the Arcadians that help me by playing
and helping find the items and such, ESPECIALLY you EAP.

This is the first version.  I’ll try and update when I get more info, mainly
on the levels up for the characters.  I’ll appreciate any help given.  Thank
you.
