***************
* 2.2 Jumping *
***************
By pressing d, u your character will perform a vertical jump (there are no
diagonal jumps in this game except for some special attacks). By itself the
jump serves no purpose other than to avoid some moves and to do a more advanced
techniques explained at the end of this section.
You can perform an attack by pressing P/K at any point during the jump. Some
characters may have only 1 jumping attack animation and some don't have at all
so here's the list to understand better:
2 Jumping Attacks = Pachycefalo, Stygimoloch
1 Jumping Attack = Allosaurus, Ceratosaurus
No Jumping Attack = Triceratops, Monoclonius, Tyrannosaurus
You can cancel the jump before it happens using the attack canceling maneuver
(refer to section 2.4). Being attacked while jumping puts you in a "knockdown
state" regardless if the attack had that property or not. Do note that since
this game doesn't allow you to change sides, every time one of the players goes
past the other either by a jumping attack, walking past the opponent while
they are jumping or after certain attacks, they will automatically go back to
their starting positions (Player 1 = Left side / Player 2 = Right side).
A rather interesting technique (or bug) is that if you perform a special
attack that can be done in the air (refer to each character's movelist) the
next attack made while falling down will actually replace the character's
normal jumping attack (or lack thereof). That means you'll be able to perform
any attack that shouldn't be possible in the air (including combo attacks). By
doing the above technique, you can make an attack that would normally whiff
(like Allosaurus' combo attack against a crouching Triceratops) to not whiff at
all. Only Allosaurus, Pachycephalo, Ceratosaurus and Stygimoloch can use this
ability.
****************
* 2.3 Blocking *
****************
Activated by holding d, it allows you to block incoming attacks and avoid the
usual hitstun (the animation your character does when an attack connects). Even
when blocking, you still take damage from attacks but at a highly reduced amount
(usually between 5% and 10% of their normal damage). Some attacks can't be
blocked but you still benefit from the block's damage reduction while others
completely bypass the block and do full damage. Refer to each character's
movelist for more info on this. Combo attacks can't be blocked and will also
inflict their full damage. Your character can't block if they attack while
crouching. If you try to block in this scenario and you are attacked, you'll
receive full damage from the opponent's attack. Triceratops and Monoclonius
can't block attacks but they benefit from the damage reduction it provides
(even against attacks that would deal 100% of their total damage when blocking)
albeit not the same amount as the other characters (it would deal approximately
90% of the attack's damage instead of 5-10%).
************************
* 2.4 Attack Canceling *
************************
While doing any basic or command attack, your character's combo attack
(during the first attack only), and certain special attacks, you can cancel that
attack's animation into another by simply doing the motion required for the move
you want to cancel into. You can cancel into special attacks or a jump but not
into normal, command moves, or combo attacks. Jump attacks can't be canceled.
Which special attacks are cancelable (or not) will be mentioned in each
character's movelist in the following way:
From = can cancel from the special attack you're using if it has the
"cancelable from" ability
Into = can cancel into any special attack that has the "cancelable into"
ability
You cannot cancel into the same attack you used to cancel from (except in one
case, which will be mentioned in said character's movelist). If you do a
special attack that begins with a leap and has the "cancelable from" ability,
you can only cancel it into a special attack that can be done in the air.
************************
* 2.5 Attack Buffering *
************************
Perhaps not having that much usefulness, the attack buffering maneuver is the
ability to perform a special attack by "omitting the motion required for it."
To do it simply perform a special attack that has the "u, ub, b, db, d + P/K"
motion but don't press either P/K and instead wait. During 1 ingame second, if
you press the necessary attack button for the move you buffered, the special
attack will come out. You can walk/attack during this period (as long as it's
not the button that the buffered special attack requires) and the move will
still be there for immediate use. All of Rastan's special attacks, however,
can be buffered this way.
************************
* 2.6 Damage Reduction *
************************
One of the strangest things about this game is each character's normal damage
reduction (or each attack's damage) which varies between characters with no
rhyme or reason. I'll put 2 examples that are tested. These examples are
Allosaurus and Triceratops' combo attacks against the rest of the cast
(including against themselves) in terms of damage from highest to lowest:
Allosaurus' combo attack damage = Triceratops, Pachycephalo, Stygimoloch,
Allosaurus, Ceratosaurus, Tyrannosaurus
Triceratops' combo attack damage = Tyrannosaurus, Pachycephalo, Stygimoloch,
Allosaurus, Triceratops, Ceratosaurus
Considering Triceratops' size, I have absolutely no idea as to why he does
more damage to Tyrannosaurus than Allosaurus. This also applies to normal and
special attacks (in even more inconsistent ways) so I wanted to give a small
explanation on how this "damage reduction" stuff works so don't be surprised as
to how a small dinosaur does more damage to a giant one than a same-sized one
would do to it.
************
* 2.7 Pins *
************
After performing any attack that has the "knockdown" property (refer to each
character's movelist to see which maneuvers have this property) the opponent
will be put in a "knockdown state." During a knockdown state you are able to
deal additional damage by simply getting close to the opponent. Your character
will stand over the opponent keeping them pinned while continually doing damage
until the opponent recovers. You can initiate the pin by not just walking
forward but also by using any forward-advancing move (or landing onto the enemy
after a jumping attack). The pin itself does considerable damage even if the
enemy recovers as soon as you started the pin. The pin will inflict the same
damage again if (for whatever reason) you stop the pin and do another one.
If the character doing the pin presses the d direction, they will perform an
extra attack (either a biting, head-banging or "humping" animation, sort of)
that deals a bit more damage than just doing the regular pin (very little
difference from what I notice). You can extend said attack by holding d. The
starting part of the animation does some damage then it lowers a bit during the
continuous part (if you decide to hold d). Triceratops and Monoclonius have to
press P/K to perform the knockdown attack instead of pressing d.
To recover from a knockdown, simply shake the joystick while pressing P/K (or
both) rapidly. The time it takes to recover is lower if done before the
opponent pins you, to the point that you can recover so fast that it's next to
impossible to do a pin attack. If you jump over the opponent while they are
knocked down, they will automatically recover.
*****************
* 2.8 Power Bar *
*****************
Represented by 3 separate "POWER" bars located below your life meter. This
is used to perform the combo attack (refer to section 2.9). You start each
round with the 3 bars fully charged. If one is spent, you can recharge it
manually by holding u or ub which will cause your character to "Roar." The
roar makes your meter (located right below your 3rd power bar) to gradually go
up. You can speed up the process by pressing P rapidly while doing the roar.
K works too but only during the back-walking roar, otherwise your character
will perform one of their attacks. If you do the non-moving roar and press P,
the Triceratops will perform one of his attacks so use the back-walking version
instead for him.
********************
* 2.9 Combo Attack *
********************
Done by pressing P+K when you have at least 1 power bar filled. Your
character will perform a horizontal or jumping attack (depends on character)
that if connected will not only inflict damage but also put the enemy in a
"knockdown state." If you have 2 bars filled and the initial combo attack
connects, your character will automatically perform 1 extra attack. If you
have 3 bars filled you will perform 2 extra attacks instead. The combo attack
will always consume one of your power bars regardless if it connects or not.
You cannot recover from a combo attack until it ends (that means if the enemy
has 2 power bars, you have to wait until the second attack ends for you to
recover). It's recommended to have at least 2 power bars before using the
combo attack since the first attack does roughly the same damage as any of your
normal/special attacks.
*************************
* 2.10 Pickable Weapons *
*************************
In "all" stages (Tyrannosaurus' stage only has pickable weapons in the cpu
version of it) after destroying a specific part of the arena you're fighting on,
an object will be left on the ground and be able to be picked up. Press d near
the object to pick it up. Use the object as a weapon by pressing P or holding
d and pressing P while holding it in your mouth. The "weapon" itself lasts
only for 1 attack (regardless if it connects or not) or if you are damaged
while holding it. The attack will register at the exact moment you press P so
it's extremely good and worth your while to pick the weapon and use it (even
more when you see how much damage it does, approximately 25% of the life bar).
Should both characters have weapons held in their mouths and attack at the same
time, they will cancel each other and not do any damage. Only Allosaurus,
Pachycephalo, and Ceratosaurus are able to pick up objects. Tyrannosaurus can
pick up weapons as well, but he proceeds to eat it and does not have any
benefits from doing so. It does help on explaining how this particular
Tyrannosaurus is so fat. Here are the following weapons in the game:
Allosaurus' Stage = Log with 2 possible per round; must destroy the guard
towers to make them appear (by merely attacking the
cornered character when he's close to the guard tower)
Triceratops' Stage = Bone with 2 possible per round; must destroy the pile of
bones to make them appear (by merely attacking the
cornered character when he's close to the pile of
bones) / Ankylosaurus with 1 possible per round; must
destroy the westernmost rock mound to make him appear
Pachycephalo's Stage = Log with 2 possible per round; must destroy 2 specific
trees to make them appear (by merely walking backwards
or being attacked near it) / Ankylosaurus with 1
possible per round; must destroy the easternmost rock
mound to make him appear
Tyrannosaurus' Stage = Log with 2 possible per round; must destroy the guard
(cpu stage only) towers to make them appear (by merely attacking the
cornered character when he's close to the guard tower)
Ceratosaurus' Stage = Log with 2 possible per round; must destroy 2 specific
trees to make them appear (by merely walking backwards
or being attacked near it) / Ankylosaurus with 1
possible per round; must destroy the easternmost rock
mound to make him appear
Stygimoloch's Stage = Log with 1 possible per round; must destroy the guard
tower located in Player 1's side to make it appear (by
merely attacking the cornered character when he's close
to the guard tower)
**************************
* 2.11 Pterodactyl's Egg *
**************************
After approximately 25 ingame seconds and any of the 2 characters having 75%
of his life remaining, a Pterodactyl will appear (some sort of "flag" the game
sends to trigger it) and drop a different-colored egg (the color of the egg
depends on stage).
It can be eaten by pressing P when it's near your character's mouth
(Triceratops and Monoclonius requires a different attack to eat it, done by
holding u/uf and then press P). Pachycephalo and Stygimoloch are unable to eat
the egg.
Only one egg can appear per round. The egg will continue to bounce in the
same place during 15 ingame seconds after which a Velociraptor will proceed to
take it for itself. The Pterodactyl will not come if the timer has 32 seconds
remaining, the character who dealt the necessary damage for the Pterodactyl to
be triggered is damaged, or if one of the characters has 25% life remaining.
If the character who triggered the Pterodactyl (the one who dealt 25% of the
enemy's total life meter) is damaged (which will make the Pterodactyl to not
appear) they can undo this by attacking (the maneuver must connect) the
opponent. The above situation will continue if the enemy attacks you again and
then you attack them (and so on) until the game makes the Pterodactyl to appear
(or not). The Pterodactyl will come faster if he's triggered right before the
32 second mark. If you trigger the Pterodactyl with 33 seconds remaining he
will appear instantly. This also happens if you trigger him during the seconds
where the game is "able to send" the Pterodactyl. At what range (between which
seconds, basically) the game is able to "send" the Pterodactyl varies between
stages.
Each egg has different effects depending on their color and they are listed
below:
Allousaurus / Stygimoloch's Stage --> White Egg = Restores approximately 25%
of your life meter
Triceratops / Tyrannosaurus' Stage --> Red Egg = Your character shoots
flames that causes a
knockdown when pressing P
while they are standing or
crouching (lasts 13-14
ingame seconds or 10
attacks)
Pachycephalo / Ceratosaurus' Stage --> Orange Egg = The opponent is gradually
covered by leaves that
eventually makes them
unable to attack (lasts 10
ingame seconds)
Writer's Note - Some attacks that connect with the character that triggered the
Pterodactyl may not trigger that rule at all (bug, maybe).
*********************
* 2.12 Saurus Dance *
*********************
A crazy "dance", sort of, that happens when you press b or f up to 5 times
very fast or by doing b, f, b, f (can be in reverse). Your character starts
shaking (it looks like some frames of your character's P attack animation). It
seems to serve no purpose but for some reason it happens. Why it happens after
4/5 directions pressed is a mystery. You can extend (why would you do that?)
the "dance" by continuing to press either b or f. Triceratops and Monoclonius
do not have this "dance" so it may be just a bug and that's it.
*********************
* 2.13 Sudden Death *
*********************
A very, VERY uncommon occurrence (to the point that I wouldn't be surprised
if no player ever found out about this) is the Sudden Death event. This event
can be triggered in 2 ways:
1 = Make the last round of the match end in a draw (hence the reason why this
is next to impossible to see)
2 = Defeat the CPU Tyrannosaurus and fight Dino Rex (99.99% of players most
likely only know of this version of the Sudden Death due to it being
obligatory to win the game)
When the Sudden Death starts, there's a 30 seconds limit where one of the
contestants must be defeated. A draw here results in a game over. Should you
lose against the cpu (or a draw, regardless if it's against a human or the cpu)
when you add another coin and press start to continue, you'll go back to the
dinosaur-fighting part of the game and not the Sudden Match.
Both characters have 5 life crystals and each attack takes one of them and
when all 5 disappear, that person is defeated. You can block attacks by
holding b/db which only takes 1/4 of a life crystal. The complete movelist for
Rastan (the human character you use, as shown in the ending of the game) as
well as Dino Rex will be described in section 3.7/3.8.
*********************
* 2.14 Bonus Stages *
*********************
After the 2nd, 4th and 6th stage (1 player mode only) you are treated to a
bonus stage where your character (the trainer, not the dinosaur) dreams of his
dinosaur being on a rampage in the present days. The objective (except in the
final stage, which acts as a minigame of sorts, more explanation on this below)
is to destroy a building at the end of the stage. There's also military
vehicles, soldiers, and police officers that contribute to the "collapse of the
civilization" score when you destroy them. In all bonus stages, your dinosaur
is completely invincible.
Bonus Stage 1 = You have 60 seconds to find and destroy Mr. Ho Lee's building.
The building takes 3 normal attacks to be destroyed or 1 combo
attack but do note that some normal attacks may not reach the
building. The stage also consists of 3 helicopters (that
require you to either use a jumping attack or an attack that
reaches vertically) and 26 (some of them inside cars and 3 of
them are in each separate helicopter) police officers and
soldiers.
Bonus Stage 2 = 60 seconds to once again destroy Mr. Ho Lee's building at the
end of the stage. Once again, 3 hits required or 1 combo
attack. This stage consists of 1 military jet (you only have 6
chances to destroy it before it disappears and it only requires
for you to jump, no attack needed) 2 helicopters, 3 tanks (both
the jet, helicopters and tanks must be destroyed manually and
only one hit is required to do so), and 41 soldiers. The
bulldozer at the end (which Mr. Ho Lee is driving) is not
required to be destroyed (3 hits, being more durable than a
tank!) for the "collapse of the civilization" score.
Bonus Stage 3 = You have 60 seconds to destroy the building at the end of the
stage. Only 1 hit is required this time. There are no
vehicles in this stage, only 54 humans to be destroyed for the
"collapse of the civilization" score. Unlike the previous 2
bonus stages, it may not be possible to reach 100% by merely
"walking." The humans at the tents and the ones shooting the
catapults will outrun you. Personally I had to use the
Allosaurus and spam the "Super Tail Attacking" special move to
obtain a perfect score. Before the building at the end of the
stage, there's someone who seems to be an almost naked Mr. Ho
Lee, worshiping a pile of gold bars and as soon as you get
close to him (he can't be killed, not unlike the previous bonus
stages) he starts throwing money like crazy out of a briefcase
he has. This whole stage makes it look like the whole game is
actually happening in the present day as some sort of plot
twist instead of all of this happening in B.C. 2500.

4. Miscellaneous
===============================================================================
**********************
* 4.1 Bugs / Secrets *
**********************
*In Tyrannosaurus' stage, if both characters are very close to each other while
any of them are near one of the corners (both corners work) a Brachiosaurus
will push both characters quite a lot (near the palisade you destroyed to
reach the corner). This will happen after 2 seconds of being near the corner
and none of the characters are knocked down or during a side switch animation.
The Brachiosaurus won't appear when the timer reaches 19 (unless you "see" the
corner with the timer having 20 seconds remaining).
*If Triceratops or Monoclonius eat the red Pterodactyl's egg (allowing them to
shoot flames for a while) sometimes the flames won't damage the opponent at
all (this seems to happen only against Allosaurus, Pachycephalo, Ceratosaurus
and Stygimoloch).
**************************
* 4.2 Trivia / Questions *
**************************
*The human character you use, Rastan, is actually the main character of the
1987 side scroller game made by Taito, also called "Rastan."
*The game's service mode has the P/K buttons referred to as "Fire/Warp."
*Why is Monoclonius unavailable? Considering all characters except
Tyrannosaurus have an almost similar clone, why is he the only one that you
can't choose? (I would've expected Tyrannosaurus to be a hidden character or
not being available at all, but not Monoclonius).
*The game itself says the motion required for certain special attacks is
"u, ub, b, db, d, df, f + attack button" but in truth, you only need to move
your controller until the "down" position, so why does the game shows a wrong
motion?
*When a match ends, a Pterodactyl either eats or carries away the loser but if
the match ends in a double K.O. (both characters defeated at the same time)
the Pterodactyl will eat one and carry away the other (or eat both!) so who's
fighting in the Sudden Match that happens after the draw?
