Introduction
------------

When Mortal Kombat was released in 1991 many people had a field day
about how violence in video games perverts the minds of children. In Mortal
Kombat there was insane amounts of blood, and the high point of the game was
when one character killed another character. Little did the parents and
religious groups know that MK was mild compared to a game released six years
earlier, in 1986. That game was Chiller, and how the hell this game got past
the watchdogs of the time I'll never know...

This game is a gun shooter much like Terminator 2 or Revolution X.
However, there are no enemies, and the screen doesn't scroll. The point of
the game was torture as many people and kill as many ghosts as possible
before time ran out. Not only did Chiller have gallons upon gallons of blood,
but also featured torture, dismemberment, and nudity!

I origionally played this game at a local arcade when I was 10 or 11 and
didn't like it. Then the other day I decided to play it on MAME and as an
adult I fell in love. If it wasn't for the gore this game would be boring.
However, it's so fun to shoot a lever and crush a guy's head... So I created
this FAQ. =)

Gameplay
--------

Chiller is very simple, but hard to describe. The second you watch the
intro you'll know exactly what to do, thou. Before you go into a level a
screen will show with small pictures that will give you clues of where to
find the secrets in the level. I have noted all the secrets in all four
levels below. When you get all the secrets in a level you will hear the sound
of an organ playing, and when the level ends you'll play a slot maching for
points or an extra credit. When you get all the secrets in all the levels
you get to play a bonus game, and then go through the game all over again.

At the top of your screen is your Monster Meter, or MM for short.
Everytime you kill, maim, or somehow do something the MM goes down by 1. When
you run out the MM the level is over and you get a bonus for your extra time.
If your time runs out before your MM does then it's game over.

Unlike most modern gun games you don't have to reload.

On with the walkthrough/hints/whatever type thingy!

Torture Chamber
---------------

1 - Shoot the rope holding the guillotine blade to behead the poor guy in it.

2 - You'll see a guy with his head in a head smasher. Shoot the handle three
times bo splatter his brains out.

3 - Shoot the severed heads on the shelf above the guy in the head smasher.

4 - Shoot the heads on the floor in front of the guy hanging from the wall.

5 - Shoot the head of the guy hanging from the wall.

6 - Blow away the bricks on the beheading table. A skull will appear, Blow
   away the skull.

7 - There's a grate to the top right of the guy hanging from the wall. Shoot
just below it to the right to reveal a hidden skull.

8 - Shoot the shield on the ground.

Notes - Very easy stage, just blow the hell out of everything!

Rack Room
---------

1 - Shoot the wheels of the two racks to rip the two victims in half.

2 - You'll see a guy in the background hanging from a rope. Follow the rope
and it'll lead to a lever. Shoot the lever several times until the
   alligater eats all of him.

3 - In the background to the left there's a doorway. Occasionally a guy comes
out of the doorway for a second or two. Kill the guy.

4 - There's a square door to the right of the guy who gets eaten by the
   alligator. Shoot it.

5 - By the door you'll see a key on the wall. Shoot it.

6 - Blow the heads off the two people on the rack.

7 - Blast open the chest of the guy laying on the floor in the middle.

8 - A rat like thing will scurry along the ground in the back. Shoot it.

Notes - Very simple to get past, just keep an open eye to make sure you get
everything. In later rounds when your MM is high blowing away the
humans won't be enough and you will need to shoot flying ghosts and
random body parts floating around in the river of blood.

Hallway
-------

1 - When the living lady runs across the screen there is a trap door on the
right side of the screen in front of the second door. Shoot the floor
immediately in front of that door before she runs by to get the first
   secret.

2 - When that zombie head flys towards the screen when the level first starts
   shoot it's left eye.

3 - On the floor near the bottom of the screen is a suspicious pile of moss.
Shoot it to have a skull fly up out of the ground. Shoot the skull for
   your secret.

4 - Shoot the ground by the cascet to break the ground. A green head will pop
up. Shoot it for your secret.

5 - Shoot the inside of the first doorway and some bricks will break away.
   Grab the key.

6 - Blow away the zombie hands holding the torches on the walls.

7 - Shoot the leg hanging out of the grate and blast it when it hits the
   ground.

8 - This one is tricky and time consuming, so you may end up losing the round
due to time due to this one. Start blasting the coffin on the left side
of the screen until you fully reveal a mummy. Unload rounds to blast away
it's chest, and thus get your secret.

Notes - If your machine is set to the default 45 second time limit then you
will have trouble getting everything and running out your monster
meter. Start by hitting the trap door for the lady, then shoot the
zombie in the eye. Begin blasting the coffin and getting the rest of
the secrets. When you're done start shooting down the ghosts in the
background and pray you have enough time to get 'em all. Also note
the trap door closes after 5 seconds. Opening it again will decrease
your MM by one. You can also shoot the dog every time it appears to
decrease the MM yet again. Taking those two shots each time they
appear will take your MM down about 10 points per round, so they're a
quick and valuable way to decrease your MM.

Graveyard
---------

1 - Begin blasting the left headstone and the initials of the person with the
   machine's high score will appear.

2 - You'll see a lady in the background half buried in the ground. Begin
blasting her, she'll take a fair number of shots but she will REALLY help
   your count go down quick.

3 - Blast the church bell in the background.

4 - Shoot the flashing windows in the church.

5 - Blow away all the impaled heads.

6 - There's a hole in the old tree on your right. Blast the eyes when they
   flash.

7 - There's a boulder in the background. Shoot it.

8 - Shoot the top of the headstone that looks like a spike on your left.
It'll start spurting blood, and you'll get your secret.

Notes - This stage is incredibally easy, and you should be able to get
everything and run out your monster meter with no problems. Start by
blowing away the impaled heads, then shoot the church bell and
window, the stone, followed by the eyes in the tree, the girl, and
the headstone. Then start blasting away the arms that grow out of
the ground. If you'll notice the zombie closest to you will pop up
out of the ground and rip it's own head off. If you repeatedly shoot
it's arms you can give it multiple hits and decrease your meter
       REALLY fast.

Bonus Level
-----------

When you find everything in a level you'll get to play the bonus level
which is nothing more than a slot machine. Shoot each row and try to line up
a prize. It's almost impossible to get a free credit, thou I have gotten
three bars once.

The most reliable way to get points in this round is to get two skulls.
If you watch the first bar (the one that's going slow) you'll notice that the
first time a zombie head rolls by it's followed by a BAR. The next time it
comes around it'll be followed by a skull. Shoot the skull, and repeat on the
next row. The final row pretty much comes to luck, but occasionally you'll be
able to get some really good points in this round!

Bonus Rounds
------------

Once you've gotten everything in all four levels you'll get to play the
bonus rounds! What happens is that a bunch of heads, hearts, etc fly across
the screen and you got to shoot them all. TRY NOT TO MISS A SINGLE ONE - if
you do the round is over and you go back to a normal game.

In Round 1 you get 10,000 points per hit, in Round 2 11,000 per hit,
etc. So try to hang in her as long as possible because this is the easiest
place to get extra points!

Then when you're done you'll have to go through the four levels all over
again, but your monster meter count will increase each time you go through
the game. The MM count goes like this...

          |  R1  |  R2  |  R3  |  R4
-----------|------|------|------|------
T. Chamber |  40  |  55  |  60  |  75
Rack Room  |  40  |  55  |  60  |  75
Hallway    |  55  |  60  |  75  |   ?
Graveyrd   |  55  |  60  |  75  |   ?

So essentially this game has no end, it just keeps giving you more things
to shoot until you finally run out of time and lose.

How to get a really high score
------------------------------

My personal high score is 2,754,930. Getting to a million can be tough,
so here's how to get a really high score.

First off, go for all the secrets first. Take them out as quickly as
possible, and then blast the hell out of everything as quickly as possible.
The time bonus is what gets you the big points during gameplay. The best way
to decrease your monster meter quickly is to blow away the humans. Every part
of them can be turned into a bloody mess, including knees, feet, armpits,
shoulders, and hands. Then take out the random stuff on the ground such as
rats and severed limbs. And your last resort is to shoot all the stuff flying
around.

Score as much as you can in the slot machines round. It's some easy
points if you time it right.

And finally hang in there as long as you can in the bonus rounds where
severed heads fly around the screen! You can net 500,000 points here if
you're really good...
