UPDATED-10/2-M. Parker (Sariel at the GameFAQs boards) sent me some useful
info, including a note on difficulty levels.
“I don't know if there is a difficulty switch on the machine here at our
arcade, but I have definitely faced different levels of difficulty. I think
one way to get it may be to pump the shotgun (I've tried several times to
get the fun graphics, but was doing it 7 times instead of the required 5).
Try it out there. “
Aah, CarnEvil. This wonderful game stands out as my all time favorite arcade
shooter, yet I see a disturbing lack of recognition and FAQs for it. Come
on, how can you not love a game where you can blast evil Christmas elves
into bloody chunks? ^_^
Now, writing a full FAQ/walkthrough for an arcade game would be…difficult to
say the least…(“Will someone turn those other machines down! Aaah! You’re
splashing your milkshake on my notes!”) but it’s not like CarnEvil really
requires a lot of strategy…except for the bosses, which can be quite
difficult. And so, I bring you this guide. Enjoy!
This guide assumes that most of you, like me, select the stages from left to
right, which are Haunted House, Rickety Town, Freak Show and Big Top. If you
play in a different order, just skip ahead to the boss that’s smashing you.
BOSS #1 – HAMBONE
Location-early in the Haunted House
Description-Big guy in an iron mask with a chaingun arm
Difficulty: Easy
Death sequence-Falls over
Hambones’ pretty easy. Just shoot him in the chaingun. While he’s wiggling
his arm in pain, blast him in the chest and head. If you’re a good enough
shot, he shouldn’t get too many hits on you. And if you get the Shotgun
powerup, it’s over. Just blast away and don’t even bother with the arm, and
he’ll be toast in seconds. But he’s not quite ready for the grave yet….
BOSS #2 – HAMBONE THE REVENGE
Location: midway through the Haunted House
Description: Same as before
Difficulty: Easy
Death sequence-Again, falls over
Again, a pushover. Use the same tactics as before. Blast him in the gun and
then the chest and head when he’s in pain, but this time, his gun fires
exploding skulls, which you can fortunately shoot out of the air if you’re
quick.
For both versions of Hambone, Sariel suggests shooting him in the groin,
which causes him to stagger.
BOSS #3 – EVIL MARIE
Location: End of Haunted House
Description: Aristocratic ghost with a bloody neck
Difficulty: Hard
Death sequence: Blasted out of the air and is impaled on a pointy monument.
I think she says something, but I’m not sure what it is….if anyone knows,
please email me.
Evil Marie is HHHHAAARRRDDDD. In fact, she’s probably the second toughest
boss after the Baron himself. Her weak spot is the scar on her neck, but
this is very hard to hit while she’s mercilessly swinging her axe at you.
Hit her two or three times and she’ll fly ahead and fly back and forth while
throwing axes at you. Don’t bother trying to hit her, just blast those axes!
She’ll use these two patterns for a while, and when you wear enough health
off, her defense weakens and you can hit her anywhere.
After she’s fluctuated between these two patterns and her health is down to
about an inch, she’s hover in the air charging up energy blasts. Shoot her
as fast as you can (you can hit her anywhere now) because you can’t stop the
blasts. She’ll probably get one off, but you should be able to destroy her
before she does another one.
BOSS #4 – KRAMPUS
Location: End of Rickety Town
Description: Green-suited Santa Claus with talons and antlers
Difficulty: Hard
Death sequence: Stumbles backwards saying “Oh no, oh no, oh no!” and
collapses.
Krampus is pretty tough. His slashing combos are pretty much impossible to
avoid getting hit by, so just try to bloody all of his parts-especially his
chest, since you can expose his heart, a major weak point.
Krampus has three main attacks. Slashing with his claws, swinging his bag
and throwing hot coals out of his bag. His coals can be shot, his bag can be
deflected if you shoot it enough, but I don’t think his slashes can be
avoided. Just aim for the bag when he says “Let’s see what I got for YOU!”
and be ready to shoot projectiles when he says “How about a nice lump of
coal!”
BOSS #5 – EYECLOPS
Location: Midway through the Freak Show
Description: Two headed, eye-studded cyclops with a Cockney accent
Difficulty: Medium
Death sequence: Falls backwards with a cry of “BLOODY ‘ELL!”
To kill Eyeclops, you’ll have to shoot out all of his eyes. This is easier
said than done though, as he’s got eyes studded all over his chest and arms
as well as the two on his heads.
When he charges you with his twin swords-sometimes accompanied by a shout of
“Hey man, do you ‘appen to ‘ave a crumpet?” the only way to stop him is to
pop one of his eyes-you’ll know by his yell of “AAAGGH! ME EYE!” Just
aim-carefully-at his arm and chest eyes after you take out the two head
ones, and this freak’ll soon be poppin’ into a jar.
BOSS #6 – JUNIOR
Location: End of the Freak Show
Description: Giant deformed baby
Difficulty: Easy
Death sequence: Stumbles into electric grid, fried to a crisp, falls apart
Aaah, Junior. While quite easy, he is perhaps the most disturbing video game
enemy of all time, topping even the Burner from Parasite Eve II-well, *any*
enemy from PEII, really-or the SunofaGun from Chrono Cross (violent shudder)
Juniors’ simple. Just blast away like a lunatic and bloody all of his body
parts. Unless you’re a REALLY quick shot or you have two players, you
probably won’t be able to destroy all of his vomit attack, but fortunately
he only does this lovely attack once.
Sariel says that you can keep Junior from attacking by shooting him in the
chin. His huge malformed head is a pretty easy target, so blast away!
Eventually he’ll start hurling toys at you. These are much more slow moving
and fewer in number than Evil Maries’ axes though, so you should have no
trouble blowing them out of the air with one or two well timed shots and
then going back to the baby blasting. Just keep blasting him until he goes
into the electric grid, then watch the fireworks.
According to Sariel, if you are on one of the higher difficulty levels he
mentioned, you may instead face a giant undead teddy bear called Deady. The
tactics are the same as for Junior though.
BOSS #7 – UMLAUT
Location: End of the Big Top
Description: Demonic flying jester head
Difficulty: Easy
Death sequence: Slowly shatters while screaming “Ohhhhhh,
SSSSSHHHHHIIII----“ (thanks to Sariel for this tidbit)
Yes, you finally get a crack at this annoying little bastard, and he’s not
too hard if you’re patient and a good shot. Shoot him as he flies around,
and when he says “I haven’t had a bite all day!” or “Just dropping by for a
bite!” he’s getting ready to do his only attack, a swooping bite. If you
shoot him anytime during this attack, he’ll be knocked back and won’t hit
you.
All in all, an easy battle. But the real challenge is up ahead…..
BOSS #8 – BARON VON TOKKENTAKKER
Location: End of the Big Top
Description: Evil circus ringmaster
Difficulty: Hard
Death sequence: Blasted back into zeppelins’ propeller and chopped into
kibble
When you first see this wicked ghost, he’s summoning Umlaut and your shots,
though they draw blood, can’t hurt him. After Umlaut is out of the picture
though, the Baron himself will appear and take you on.
You know, for some reason this fight has always seemed really dramatic to
me…what with Tokkentakkers’ shouts of “Submit to me!” “Obey me!” “You cannot
destroy me!” and his teleporting all over the zeppelin…
Anyway, dramatics aside, this is a very hard fight. Tokkentakker will
constantly summon skeletons (fortunately they go down with two or three
shots) to distract you while he takes aim with his blunderbuss. Like
Hambones’ chaingun, Tokkentakkers’ blunderbuss fires bullets, so you can’t
shoot any projectiles-if he fires, you WILL feel it. However, just shooting
him once will cause him to lose his aim-if you yells “Hold still!” he’s
trying to get a bead on you. Shoot him!
After about half his health is gone, Tokkentakker will say “How about some
fireworks?” and send rockets at you. This is extremely hard, because you
have to shoot the rockets (if you don’t want to die, that is-the rockets
pack a serious wallop) and blast Tokkentakker as well. He’s a bit like the
Emperor from House of the Dead 2-and like the Emperor, the best way to
tackle him is with two players-one shooting the rockets, the other blasting
the crap out of Tokkentakker. However, if you’re playing by yourself, you’ll
just have to pop rockets constantly and just shoot Tokkentakker when you see
an opening between launches. Unless you have lots of quarters, that is-then
you can just blast away to your hearts’ desire. ^_^ Fortunately, he’ll stop
summoning skeletons once he starts the rocket barrage.
After you blast the last ounce of his health away, Tokkentakker will fly
back into the propeller, gloriously exploding into a spray of meaty chunks!
He’s got an awful lot of blood for a ghost, doesn’t he?
After that, just sheathe the shotgun and stand proud. A winner is you!
