Baseball Stars Professional, despite the title, is actually the first game in
the series for the Neo Geo. It features 16 teams, each with their own unique
statistics. You can play a single game or enter into a bracketed tournament
mode for a chance to win the championship cup. Being it is the first game, it
has some flaws including slow controls and limited player movements, and
unenforced positions (you can have pinch hitters substitute as pitchers and
vice versa). I think the second game is better quite honestly, but this one
is still worth a shot.

Gameplay Modes
==============

In this game, there are only two modes of gameplay. They are:

VS: Play a single game against the computer or another human player.

Tournament: A bracket comprised of the game's 16 teams is made, and you
move up by defeating the other teams near you on the bracket.
If you reach the end and win the final game, you win the
"Victory" trophy and the game ends.

If you select VS mode, you will be asked to choose the number of human
players (1P or 2P). In Tournament mode, you will have the chance to load any
saved game data from previous games. If not, then you will be prompted to
either start a new tournament or continue an existing one. Finally, you can
choose the number of human players (up to 16, though you will need additional
systems and games for this to work).

After all of these selections are made, you can pick your team from the 16
teams available. Use Left/Right to cycle the team list, and Down to reach the
"Player Stats" option. If you highlight that and press A, you can cycle the
list of that team's players and view their individual statistics by pressing
A. The nine players listed on the left are the starting lineup, with the
pitcher batting in the #9 position. The seven players on the right side are
relief pitchers and batters/runners (you can tell which is which by the
different stats at the top of the screen). In theory, this distinction does
not matter since you can substitute the batters as pitchers and vice versa.

After both teams are set, you can choose the stadium you want to play in.
Both are the same size, but one has a dome and the other is open. On the
final screen, you can choose if you want to start the game right away. This
is your chance to change the starting order or switch players. After you are
done, the game begins.

If you are in Tournament mode and the matchup is against two computer
opponents, you will be able to choose a "Speed Game" option where the game
will be automatically played instantly and the results displayed. You can
also watch the game, but you would have no control over what happens. Thus,
speeding it up is the most time-effective.

In-Game Tips
============

As it is the first game in the Baseball Stars series, there are still kinks
to be worked out. Most notably, the players are a bit clunky and tend to
start off slow when running, speeding up after a couple of seconds. Also, if
you are at bat and you want to signal a runner to attempt to steal a base,
you may need to hold the specified direction and tap B repeatedly. This can
make hitting the ball hard due to how slow this occurs, plus the pitchers are
smart and tend to try picking off runners, so choose wisely!

If you are playing the field after the ball is hit, you will be able to
control your players' movements with the joystick. This mode is very
primitive, so your players won't make any indication if they are standing in
the right spot to catch a fly ball. It takes a bit of trial and error, as
well as some good judgment, to get it down right. Your other players tend to
not move unless the ball is closest to them, and even then they can be slow
to move, so keep that in mind as well.

If you are at bat and have runners on base, there is something you need to be
careful about. If the ball is hit and the runners advance to base, and the
ball is CAUGHT, the runners must tag the starting base again or they can be
thrown/tagged out at that base (if you know baseball, this makes sense).
However, if you send your runners to the next base and they have already
arrived at the base, you can NOT send them back, causing some forced outs to
occur, so watch out!

Post-Game
=========

After a game ends, you will go to a screen where you will see the box score,
most importantly. The winning/losing/saving pitchers will be listed with
their now-current record. The next screen will display any home runs hit by
each team and by whom. Following that screen, the game is over. If you are in
Tournament mode, you will return to the bracket screen before the next match.

NOTE: In this game, there are no designated hitters. Therefore, the pitcher
always bats in the #9 position. You can, however, substitute players
with the relievers as needed, regardless of their official designation.
You can substitute pitchers, fielders, runners, and even the current
batters. Once you switch someone out though, they can not be brought
back! Also note that players designated as pitchers have a different
set of statistics even though they can be used as batters, too.

For the players listed below, the first eight on the left are the eight
starting batters in the lineup. The four at the end of the list are the
substitute batters. The four players on the right are the pitchers,
with the first pitcher on the list batting in the #9 position
initially.
