001-General Information
---------------------------------------------------------

This is a walkthrough for the game called "Transylvania".
It was first made in 1982, and there are different versions
of this game. This guide is for Apple II version of the
game. This version of the game is easily identified by the
fact that it has a wooden cross in the graveyard, which
other versions of the game do not have. Most versions of
the game are pretty much identical to each other.

Thanks to jgs, who made the ASCII art piece of a vampire,
which is at the top of this guide.

002-Locations
---------------------------------------------------------

This game has about thirty different screens, and it can be
a bit of a maze, determining how to get from one place to
another. Here is my attempt at a general map.

             /-----------Path-----House

           Boat

Some locations are hard to chart out. For example, if you
go south from the hut, you end up at the goblin. But if you
go NORTH of the hut, then east, you also end up at the
goblin.

To make things worse, a giant eagle is flying around the
game. Randomly, it will pick you up and put you in another
location. Some people recommend exploring the map and
getting sense of where things are, before playing this game
for real.

003-Walkthrough
---------------------------------------------------------

Your goal in this game is to get Princess Sabrina out of
the vampire-guarded castle, then take her to the boat so
she can sail home.

You start at the stump. Go north, then west. In this area
is a note. Take the note, then read it. The note tells you
how much longer you have, before the princess dies. This
time limit changes, depending on which version of the game
you're playing. Every forty or so moves, you'll hear a bell
toll, sounding the time.

The woods here are home to a werewolf, who wanders around
randomly. If the werewolf appears onscreen, your next move
must be to leave, or else the werewolf will eat you.

Killing the werewolf is an optional puzzle, which I'll
describe later on. First, I'm going to talk about killing
the other monster in this game: the vampire.

The vampire lives in the castle, where Princess Sabrina is.
You need a cross to kill it. In the Apple II version of
this game, the cross is in the graveyard. From the starting
place, go north, west twice, north and east. Take the
wooden cross.

Time to kill the vampire. Go south and east to reach the
castle, then go north twice to enter it. The vampire is
here, but it appears randomly. Go east and west until it
appears. Show the cross to the vampire to kill it.

In the east room of the castle, you find flypaper. Pick it
up, then go west to the main room.

Go north to a large staircase, then go down three times to
find a coffer. Open the coffer, then take the ring. You
cannot get the ring, without first showing the cross to the
vampire.

Go up three times and south three times to return to the
main road. You're in werewolf territory again. Let's kill
the dreaded beast, shall we? To kill it, you need a pistol
and a bullet.

The pistol is inside the house. Go east, then north, then
east to the house. Enter the house and go up the stairs.
Take the pistol here.

The bullet is in the wagon. Go down the stairs, then go
west twice and south. Enter the wagon and open the coffin.
In other versions of the game, opening the coffin requires
finding a metal bar.

Opening the coffin reveals a corpse, mice and a bullet.
First, take the mice. If you don't, they escape forever.
You can beat the game without getting the mice,
fortunately.

Take the bullet here. You might have to drop an item or two
first, such as the cross, before you can pick it up. Load
the pistol with the bullet, and the next time you see the
werewolf, shoot the werewolf to kill it. Killing the
werewolf is optional, though, so don't worry if you don't
kill it.

Go south from the wagon to reach the houses. Enter the log
cabin. It has a deer mounted on the wall. Type "pull
horns", and the wall turns around, taking you to a hidden
room with a wizard's cloak. Take the cloak, then pull the
horns again to leave this room. Exit the cabin.

Go north, east twice, then south to the hut. Enter the hut,
which has a cat. Drop the mice (from the coffin) to
distract the cat, so you can take the acid.

You want to return to the stump, where you started the
game. Exit the hut, then go north, west twice, south twice,
east and south. Empty the acid on the stump to see writing.
Read the stump to see that it says "knock here". Knock the
stump to reach a hidden cave.

This cave has a book on elixirs. You'll need to use an
elixir to save the princess, so read the book. It says
elixirs require shaking, then pouring. After that, clap
your hands.

This cave also has flies. Catch flies (with the flypaper
from the east part of the castle) to capture them.

The cave has a locked door. Search the cloak to find a lock
pick. Take the lock pick, then open the door. This is the
only thing you need the lock pick for, so feel free to drop
it here, if you want. Go north through the door, then
examine the crystal ball.

You see a vision of a person with a wizard's cloak and
ring, waving at a statue. This is your next goal.

You have the wizard's cloak from the log cabin, so wear the
cloak. You also have the ring from the castle, so wear the
ring. Now you just need to find the statue. Go south and
take the book, in order to leave the cave. Now go north,
west twice and north to the statue. Wave the ring to
meet...an alien?

Yep, it's an alien. It calls the mother ship. Sometime in
the future, the alien ship will appear in this area. When
it does, you want to go there and meet the aliens.

In the meantime, let's solve some puzzles. You should have
some flies now, because you got flypaper from the castle
and used them on the flies in the cave. Go south three
times to reach the frog. Feed the frog with the flies. The
frog says, "Say INJID to the Goblin for me".

Go north three times, then east three times to reach the
Goblin. Say injid, and the goblin runs away. It leaves
behind a key. Pick up the key, then go west three times,
then north. You're at a graveyard. Push the tombstone to
reveal a grate, then open the grate (with the goblin's
key).

Go down the grate. Hey, the elixir needed to free the
princess is here! Take the elixir, then go up.

By now, the aliens should have appeared. If not, wander
around some more. Go west to the alien ship. Enter the
ship, and you get a black box.

The elixir and the black box are all you need to save the
princess! Go east, south and east to the castle. Go north
three times, then up twice. Move the vines to find a
sarcophagus.

Push the button (on the black box) to open the sarcophagus
that holds Princess Sabrina. Now to wake her up with the
elixir. You remember how elixirs work, right? Shake the
elixir, then pour it on the princess. Clap your hands. She
wakes up!

Go down twice, then south three times. Go west, then south
three times. Enter the boat, then sail. You take Princess
Sabrina safely back to her home!

Quickest Pathway
----------------

The quickest pathway through the game involves skipping all
the optional puzzles, such as the werewolf killing, the
frog feeding and the cave sequence.

The first thing you have to do is get the cloak and the
ring. From the start, go north, west, and north. Enter the
log cabin and pull the horns. Take the cloak and wear it.

Pull the horns again, then exit the log cabin. Go north
twice to the grave. Take the cross here. Go south and east
to the castle and go north twice to enter the castle.

Wander around the castle until the vampire appears. Show
the cross to the vampire to kill it. Once that's down,
reach the bottom of the castle by going all the way down
the large staircase. Open the coffer, then take the ring.

Go up three times, then south three times. Go west twice,
then north. Wear the cloak and wear the ring. Wave the ring
to meet your alien buddy.

Go east, south, then east three times to reach the Goblin.
Say injid to the Goblin, and it drops the key. Pick up the
key, then go west three times, then north. You're at a
graveyard. Push the tombstone to reveal a grate, then open
the grate (with the goblin's key).

Go down the grate. Hey, the elixir needed to free the
princess is here! Take the elixir, then go up.

By now, the aliens should have appeared. If not, wander
around some more. Go west to the alien ship. Enter the
ship, and you get a black box.

The elixir and the black box are all you need to save the
princess! Go east, south and east to the castle. Go north
three times, then up twice. Move the vines to find a
sarcophagus.

Push the button (on the black box) to open the sarcophagus
and revealing the sleeping Princess Sabrina inside. The
elixir can wake her up. Shake the elixir, pour it on the
princess, then clap your hands. She wakes up!

Go down twice, then south three times. Go west, then south
three times. Enter the boat, then sail. You take Princess
Sabrina safely back to her home!
