01.)                    INTRODUCTION                                 G0100
===============================================================================

Welcome to 'The Dallas Quest' for the Atari 8-bit family, released by Datasoft
in 1984. The almost identical game was also released on the Apple II, C64 and
Tandy Color Computer. I assume the walkthrough will work for all machine
versions.

'Dallas' was a highly popular, long-running American prime-time television soap
opera that originally ran from 1978 to 1991. It revolved around the Ewing
family, a wealthy Texas family in the oil and cattle-ranching businesses.

Actually this game has very little to do with the show Dallas. By little I mean
that most of the game is spent outside of the Ewing's estate and without any
family members involved. The story is unrelated to anything that ever went on
TV (not that I have ever watched much to know this as fact). I would go as far
to say that this was more of tie-in by using the brand to sell more copies of
the game. Nevertheless, if you are a Dallas fan than you may want to check it
out anyway, any text adventurers will also enjoy this quite a bit.

If you have the manual or seen a copy somewhere (such as online), I would like
to have a look at it for the exact story and maybe a full list of commands.

Suggestions, comments or errors - tell me about it. Enjoy!

02.)                    BASICS                                       G0200
===============================================================================

Commands:
`````````
Type CLUE at any point to get a hint. It changes with every room. You can 9
clues per game.
These are all the commands I found useful. There are more, especially certain
swearwords, but you will have to find them yourself.
BLOW
CLIMB
CLOSE
DIG
DROP
EAST (E)
GIVE
GO
INVENTORY
JUMP
LIGHT
LOAD
LOOK
NORTH (N)
OFF
ON
OPEN
PULL
READ
ROW
SAVE
SHOOT
SHOW
SOUTH (S)
SWIM
TAKE
TICKLE
UNLIGHT
USE
WARM
WAVE
WEST (W)
Each command contains one verb and one object. For example GET is the verb
and SACK is the object. Some verbs and objects can have several alternative
usages. The game will understand all of them and even get by with a few
spelling mistakes. In the walkthrough, verbs are capitalized but objects are
not. This will allow you to note which words are being given as alternatives,
divided by a "|".
04.)                    Text Walkthrough                             G0400
===============================================================================
As the story goes, you are a detective hired by Sue Ellen to find a certain
map. However, J.R. has locked you into the house at Southfork and paid two
burly ranch hands to prevent you from escaping. You must find another way to
leave and start your treasure hunt.
You are in the living room.
You see:                               bugle, rifle, Sue Ellen
>Get bugle
>East
You are in the entryway. The front door is to the south.
You see:                               envelope
>Get envelope | ticket
>North
You are on the patio.
You see:                               pool, sunglasses, cat
>Get sunglasses | shades
>North
You are near the barn.
You see                                barn, owl
>Give sunglasses | shades
The owl flies down from the tree, perches on your arm, and allows you to place
the sunglasses on his face.
>Go barn
You are in the barn.
You see:                               giant rat, small shovel
>Drop owl
Your friend, the owl, swoops down upon the tasty rat and flies away with it.
>Get shovel
>South
>South
>South
>West
>West
You are in the pasture.
You see:                               cattle
>Wait
>Wait
There is a sudden thunderstorm. The cattle seem very restless.
>Blow bugle
You play Brahms' Lullaby so sweetly that the cattle soon become calm. Their
trampling hooves have partially uncovered something.
The storm has passed...
>Dig
You found something!
>Read epitaph
It's all that remains of a previous adventurer. The name has worn off, but
some faint markings near the bottom of the stone seem to refer to finding one's
way through a wheat field. Parts of four words have withstood the ravages of
time:
"...th, West, West, Nor..."
>East
>North
You are now in the den.
You see                                desk
>Open desk
>Drop money
>Get pouch
>North
You are lost in a wheat field.
>North
>West
>West
>North
You are at the airstrip.
You see                                airplane
>Look airplane | plane | jet
Looks like your only ticket out of here.
>Give envelope | ticket
Ray eagerly accepts the ticket, then welcomes you aboard the jet and agrees to
fly you to South America.
You are on board a small jet.
You see                                Ray Krebbs, knapsack
>Open knapsack | sack
>Drop ring
>Get parachute | chute
>Get knapsack | sack
The plane is circling over a clearing in the jungle. Ray tells you that you
will have to jump since there is nowhere to land and besides, he wants to
return in time for the kickoff!
>Jump
You float gently towards the ground.
Unfortunately, your parachute becomes tangled in a tree.
You are caught in a tree.
You see                                jaguar, monkey
>Open pouch
>Give pouch
The monkey takes some tobacco from the pouch, examines its curiously, and then
begins to chew it with great enjoyment. To show his appreciation, he untangles
your parachute and you drop to the ground below.
You are n a jungle clearing. Paths lead off in all directions.
>Close pouch
>South
You are on a jungle path.
>South
You are on a jungle path.
You see                                parrot, monkey, huge vine
>Any Command
[OPTIONAL: >Look parrot
 "Tickle him under the chin!"]
>Tickle anaconda
Only a detective as great as yourself would have located an anaconda's chin.
You tickled him under his chin and he slithers off, giggling hysterically.
>South
You are on a jungle path.
>South
You are on a riverbank.
You see                                dinghy, monkey
>Go dinghy | boat
You are in a small dinghy.
You see                                dinghy, monkey
There is a hole in the bottom of the dinghy. Water is rushing in!
>Open pouch
>Give pouch
The monkey takes some tobacco, chews it happily, and then plugs up the hole
with his tail.
>Close pouch
>Row boat
Oh my! A herd of rampaging hippos has capsized the dinghy. You are about to be
drowned AND trampled to death!
You are clinging to a capsized dingy.
You see                                rampaging hippos, monkey, giant turtle
>Blow bugle
You play now "Row, Row, Row Your Boat" with such deep feeling that the tortoise
swims to your aid. You and the monkey climb on his back and he ferries you both
to shore.
You are in Playa Peligro.
The village is strangely deserted.
You see                                trading post, monkey, sign
>South
You are inside the trading post.
You see                                mirror, monkey, curtain
>Open pouch
>Give pouch
Once again the monkey accepts your gift. He pulls aside a rug to reveal a trap-
door and a ladder leading down into the darkness.
>Close pouch
>Drop all
>Open knapsack | sack
>Get photograph | photo
You see                                signpost, monkey
>Drop flashlight | light | flash
>East
>South
>Get knapsack
>Climb ladder
>West
You are in the cannibal village.
You see                                chief, monkey, totem pole
>Off flashlight | flash | light | Unlight ___
>Get photograph | photo
>Show photograph | photo
The picture of Chugalug impresses the natives. (They believe Chugalug is a god
because of his mismatched eyes.) But the chief says before they can trust you,
you must prove your worth by performing:
a "Feat of Courage".
Thinking the chief said:
"Feet of Courage",
you break into an elaborate tap dance, while behind you a line of chorus girls
go dancing by...
Considering how much your feet hurt fro mall this running around, tap dancing
seemed pretty courageous to you, but the chief is not amused. He gives you an
order; The natives grab you and "escort" you to a crossroads.
You are at the crossroads of courage.
You see                                signpost, monkey, coconuts
>Get coconuts | coco
>West
You have chose "Nest Egg".
You must climb to a vulture's mountain aerie and return to the village with two
eggs from her nest.
You are at "Nest Egg".
You see                                mama vulture, monkey, eggs
>Get pouch
>Open pouch
>Give pouch
The monkey distracts mama by doing an amazing funny impression of J.R.
While mama is distracted, you quickly exchange the coconuts for her eggs.
You then make your way back to the cannibal village to present your gift to the
chief.
>Give eggs
The natives seem very impressed by your generous gift, but the chief says that
it is not enough - he wants to see the ring!
That's funny - only Sue Ellen and J.R. know you have the ring...
>Drop pouch
>Get mirror
>Give mirror
The monkey enjoys looking at himself even more than he likes chewing tobacco.
To show his thanks, he scampers over and lifts the hem of the chief's robe...
to reveal a pair of cowboy boots.
You rip off his headdress...
It's J.R.!
The natives are surprised and angry. They are about to attack J.R., when
suddenly, a helicopter swoops down, dragging a rope ladder. J.R. grabs the
rope and is lifted to safety. The natives are still furious so they turn their
anger on you!
You are surrounded by furious natives.
You see                                cave entrance, monkey
>Get ring
>Wave ring
The ring begins to glow... The natives cringe back in awe and begin to chant.
They point to a cave in a nearby hillside. You decide to enter the cave. The
natives clear a path for you...
You are in a torch-lit cave.
You see                               enormous spider, monkey, flickering torch
>Warm eggs
You heat up the vulture eggs over the torch until you notice them begin to
crack open. Then you carefully roll them under the spider's web.
In moment, the eggs hatch and the baby birds begin to cry, "Mama! Mama!"
Suddenly, in swoops Mama Vulture, who quickly destroys the spider - web and
all, collects her babies and departs.
You are in total darkness.
>On flashlight | On light | On flash | Light ___
You are in front V.
You see                                statue, monkey
>Drop ring
As you let go of the ring, it begins to take on a life of its own; it floats
mysteriously through the air, finally coming to rest in the statue's empty
eye-socket.
The statue's mouth drops open, and something falls to the floor.
>Get map
Before you have a chance to examine the map, J.R. appears from the shadows...
J.R. says, "Hold it; truce. You found the map. But let me make you a little
proposition; I'll give you 10 million dollars for the map and save you a trip
back to Southfork. What do you say?"
Do you accept J.R.'s offer?
>No
You made the right choice. The magic is strong here in the cave. You feel a
wave of dizziness for a moment, and suddenly you find yourself back in
Southfork!
>Give map
Sue Ellen hands you an envelope with your reward money - two million dollars -
and as you are about to hand her the map, the Ewings appear - Ray, Lucy, J.R.,
and Bobby, and each one is saying:
"We want our share!"
Miss Ellie now enters, saying:
"Stop it! Stop it! Stop it!"
She grabs the map and says, "I'm tired of all this fussin' and feudin;!" and
throws the map into the blazing fireplace.
As the map goes up in flames, Miss Ellie says, "That ends it, once and for
all!"
Well, the Ewings didn't do so well, but you are $2,000,000 richer!
Congratulations on completing:
===============================================================================
05.)                    Descriptive Walkthrough                      G0500
===============================================================================
As the story goes, you are a detective hired by Sue Ellen to find a certain
map. However, .R. has locked you into the house at Southfork and paid two burly
ranch hands to prevent you from escaping. You must find another way to leave
and start your treasure hunt.
Ignore Sue Ellen (you can not talk to her anyway) and get the bugle. Walk east
and get the envelope on the table. This is your ticket out of here, if you
would only find a plane nearby. Walk north and get the sunglasses next to the
pool. Continue north and give the sunglasses to the owl. Go barn to enter it
and drop the owl to rid the giant rat blocking the shovel. GET this SHOVEL and
walk SOUTH, SOUTH, SOUTH and WEST, WEST. WAIT here twice and BLOW the BUGLE
when the storm starts to calm down the cattle. They will uncover something in
the process. DIG to find a tombstone, LOOK at TOMBSTONE if you wish. READ the
EPITAPH on the tombstone to get directions that will get you through the wheat
field. Without it you would still get stuck even when you know the correct
directions. Return EAST to the house and NORTH to the den. OPEN the DESK and
DROP your MONEY as you need inventory space and all the other items are
necessary on your journey. Too bad, that's a waste. Continue NORTH to enter the
wheat field. The correct direction is NORTH, WEST, NORTH and WEST. You arrive
at an airstrip. LOOK at the AIRPLANE to make Ray appear. GIVE him the ENVELOPE
with the ticket and he will take you to South America.
On board the small jet, OPEN the KNAPSACK which allows you to keep more items
in your inventory by keeping some in there. DROP the RING in there for another
inventory slot and replace it by GETting the PARACHUTE. GET the KNAPSACK as
well and Ray will tell you that it is time to JUMP. There is a clearing below
and he wants to get home quickly..
You are caught in a tree as you land, so much for the clearing, or your
steering. What's worse is that if you take too long to free yourself it will
wake up and eat you. Do not worry as freeing yourself is quick. OPEN your POUCH
and GIVE the POUCH to the monkey. You are freed and step into the jungle
itself. Before anything else, CLOSE the pouch again as taking a step without
doing so will lose all the tobacco inside. You need that a few more times in
the game. Walk SOUTH twice until you step on a jungle path. Type in any command
such as LOOK and the large vine will turn out to be an anaconda. You can LOOK
at the PARROT for a huge clue, as it says "Tickle him under the chin!". This is
optional, as TICKLE the ANACONDA works wonders. Continue SOUTH twice to arrive
at the riverbank. GO into the DINGHY, but there is a hole in the boat! OPEN the
POUCH again, GIVE the POUCH to the monkey and it will plug the hole with its
tail. CLOSE the POUCH again for the reason mentioned earlier. ROW the BOAT with
the SHOVEL, if you were wondering why we are still carrying that around at this
point and did not dump that at the house instead of the $500,000 cash.
Rampaging hippos will capsize the dinghy. BLOW the BUGLE as before to get a
helping hand from the tortoise.
Enter the trading post in the SOUTH. OPEN the POUCH once more and GIVE the
POUCH to the monkey. This time it will reveal a trap-door. CLOSE the POUCH, we
still need it later. DROP ALL items on the floor, there is some re-packing to
be done. The reason we are doing this is because the ladder we are about to
climb is very rickety, you can LOOK at the LADDER to find out if you want.
Thus we can only take one item at a time, and the sack will do just that. GET
the PHOTOGRAPH and DROP the PHOTOGRAPH into the sack. GET the POUCH and DROP
the POUCH into the sack. GET the MIRROR and DROP the MIRROR into the sack as
well. PULL the CURTAIN to reveal a flashlight. GET the FLASHLIGHT. CLIMB the
LADDER now and you will end up in a dark area. LIGHT FLASHLIGHT to reveal a
sign giving you directions. DROP the FLASHLIGHT to keep the light on. Walk EAST
back to the village and SOUTH into the trading post. TAKE the KNAPSACK (the
flashlight counted as one item so could not take this earlier) and CLIMB the
LADDER. GET ALL items and go WEST.
You are in the cannibal village. UNLIGHT the FLASHLIGHT to preserve its
battery. It only lasts for a couple of dozen turns and we need it again later.
GET the PHOTOGRAPH from the sack and SHOW the PHOTOGRAPH to the villagers. They
believe the guy in the picture is a god. A short scene later you find yourself
on the Feat of Courage. GET the COCONUTS first before making the choice to go
WEST. The other choices are also beatable but they will get you stuck later on.
You arrive at the "Nest Egg" and your challenge is to grab the two eggs from
the nest. To distract the mother bird, GET the POUCH from the sack and OPEN the
POUCH. GIVE the POUCH to the monkey on final time. The distraction works and
you can replace the eggs with the coconuts. When you arrive back sat the
village you will have spilled the rest of the tobacco but you will not need it
any more. GIVE the EGGS to the chief as a gift. Funny how they ask for the
ring, as only  Sue Ellen and J.R. know you have it. DROP the POUCH to make more
space and then GET the MIRROR from the sack. GIVE the MIRROR to the monkey as a
new toy and it will reveal that the chief is actually J.R. in disguise.
As he escapes via helicopter you are being confronted by the furious villages.
GET the RING from the sack and WAVE the RING around. The natives will start
chanting and point to a nearby cave. You will enter said cave.
There is an enormous spider blocking your way with its web. The only way to
get rid of it is if you have the eggs from the challenge. If you were to take
the other two paths then this would be the end of your trip. WARM the EGGS so
that they hatch and their mother will swoop in and destroy the spider and its
web.
LIGHT the FLASHLIGHT for some light and you notice you are in front of the
large statue. DROP the RING to make it slot into the statue's eye socket.
Something falls out, if you want you can LOOK at the FLOOR to know what it is -
the map! GET the MAP and J.R. will suddenly appear from the shadows. He offers
you ten million dollars for the map right now. Of course we do not want to
accept an offer from the devilish character, if you want to see what happens if
you do then check the "Deaths" section. So we want to say NO to his offer and
for some reason that is beyond me you suddenly end up back in Southfolk. I
suppose the writer ran out of ideas for a trip home and this sounded better
than a flight, or any direct resolution with J.R. while in the cave. Cop-out
really. Anyhow, GIVE the MAP to Sue Ellen who will present you with an envelope
containing two million dollars. There will be some commotion in the Ewing
family but eventually Miss Ellie will burn the map and the entire trip was for
nothing. At least, for the Ewings. You are obviously two million dollars richer
and can probably retire early.
Congratulations on completing:
Eggs
Found: Nest Egg
Use:   Gift for the chief of the cannibal village.
       a great toy for monkeys.
Money
Found: Staring item, Sue Ellen presumably gave it to you just before the first
Use:   It's the $500,000 expense money that Sue Ellen gave you. Too bad you
       have to leave it behind as your inventory is full with more important
       items.
Owl
Found: Near Barn
Use:   Rids the barn of the giant rat if you give it the sunglasses.
Parachute (Chute)
       free. If you do not close it after opening you will spill the contents
       while walking around.
Rifle
Found: Living room.
Use:   Nothing. No ammo in this game plus you need the inventory space. Quite
       temping though, the game even has the SHOOT command.
Ring
Found: Starting item.
Use:   The "natives" want to see it, used in the cave near the end of the
       game.
Shovel
Found: Barn
Use:   Digging, naturally. Where? Try the pasture. Also very useful as a
       paddle.
Sunglasses (Shades)
Found: Patio
Use:   Helps the owl see in the dark, i.e. the barn, to attack the giant rat
       in there.
===============================================================================
OK so there is really just ONE map here, mainly because the rest of the game is
not connected enough to make it worth drawing more. You can only explore the
house in several directions, the rest of the game is spent in jungles were
taking the wrong route will get you lost almost immediately, thus staying on
the right track is vital.
Without further delay, here is the map of the Southfolk ranch, there is also
a picture version if you prefer to look at that:
===============================================================================
There are tons of ways to get stuck in this game, but these ways actually get
you killed with a unique description:
*Walk SOUTH from the entryway
"Leaving by the front door was a big mistake. It seems J.R. paid these two
burly rang hands to prevent your escape from Southfork. You are no match for
them; You put up a good fight, but you are soon knocked out. Since you are now
unable to continue with your quest: Your Quest has ended."
*SWIM at the patio with the pool
"You may be a great detective, but it seems that you never learned to swim.
After a brief struggle, you drown."
*WAIT in the pasture four times.
"The cattle have trampled your to death."
*JUMP out of the plane without taking the parachute first.
"You probably should have used a parachute."
*WAIT for around six times when caught in a tree.
"Oh well, at least the jaguar had a nice meal (you!)
*Getting lost in the jungle. Mainly happens when taking the wrong direction.
"You have been eaten by predators."
*WAIT (or other useless commands) for around six times while on the jungle path
with the anaconda.
"The anaconda has swallowed you whole. With a dainty burp he resumes his nap."
*WAIT (or other useless commands) for around ten times after entering the small
dinghy.
"The boat sinks; the crocodiles enjoy you immensely."
*CLIMB LADDER in the trading post while more than one item in your inventory.
"You may be a great detective, but it seems that you never learned to juggle
more than one object at a time while climbing down a ricketty ladder. Since
you have fallen to your death; Your Quest has ended."
*Walk EAST from the crossroads of courage and return to the village without
retrieving the gift for the chief.
"You have chosen to return to the village without even attempting a Feat of
Courage. You become the main course at the cannibal's evening meal.
*Say YES to J.R.'s offer in the cave.
J.R. hands you a briefcase containing the money. As he hands it to you and
you hive him the map, J.R. pulls a lever. A trap door opens and you fall
through it into a pit of writhing snakes!
You've gotten yourself into quite a mess! J.R. offers to pull you out - for
the modest sum of 10 million dollars. Do you agree to trade the money for your
life?
>YES
J.R. pulls you from the pit before the vipers can inflict any fatal injuries.
Unfortunately, you now have neither the map or the money.
To surive, you take over as operator of Chugalug's Emporium.
You may be a great detective, but it seems that you never learned to manage a
trading post. At this rate it will take you about ten years to save enough
money for passage back to the States...
>NO
You may be a great detective, but it seems you never learned to survive dozens
of viper bites.
*There are two more choices on the crossroads of courage. Only one is the
correct path because you will get eggs to use in a puzzle later. The other two
paths, however, still contain a puzzle that makes you believe the choice is up
to you.
WRONG CHOICE 1:
>North
You have chosen "Mane Street".
You must tame a ferocious lion and bring him back to the village. The chief
wants the lion for a pet.
You are on "Mane Street".
You see                                ferocious lion, monkey
>Get mirror
>Show mirror
Smart move! The Lion was only mean because he was lonesome. Now that he sees
his reflection, he things he has a friend. He is now tame as a kitten.
He follows you back to the village.
>Give lion
WRONG CHOICE 2:
>South
You have chosen "Dumbo's Nest".
You must enter the elephant burial ground guarded by Roger, the rogue
elephant. You must obtain one of the giant ivory tusks of the long dead king
of the elephants, and return with it to the village.
You are at "Dumbo's Nest".
You see                               rogue elephant, monkey, giant ivory tusk
>Get ring
>Wave ring
As you wave the ring in the air, it begins to glow. Roger is soon hypnotized
by the ring. You command him to lift the huge ivory tusk and carry it back to
cannibal village.
