{1} Introduction [INTR]
=======================
Recently, I completed a playthrough of Xenoblade Chronicles that, I thought, was
going to be a 100% playthrough. However, after completing Mechonis Core, I came
to
the horrible realization that I’d missed an affinity link I could only have
gotten
before Mechonis Core. The reason I missed that link was because, during all my
time consulting the Xenoblade Wiki and discussions on GameFAQs, Reddit, and
other
fan sites, I had seen no mention of the fact that this link would “expire” after
Mechonis Core, and therefore didn’t realize I was missing anything. Being a 100%
completionist who refuses to settle for 99%, I decided I would play through the
game again - but this time, I would create my own affinity guide, that would
cover
the affinity links and triggers for them in such a way that, following the
guide,
anyone wishing to “100%” their affinity chart would not be able to miss
anything.
No other guide seems to cover NPC affinity links - and for good reason; this
guide
took me two months and at least 134 hours of Xenoblade playing to craft - so I
figured I may as well do it myself.
=================================
{2} How to Read This Guide [HTRG]
=================================
This guide is, in my opinion, pretty straightforward. That being said, it might
be
worth going into detail about how the guide works the way I’ve written it.
Whenever a new area with substantial affinity links to be had (Colony 6, Colony
9/Refugee Camp, Frontier Village, Alcamoth, Hidden Machina Village) is reached,
there will be the following: a list of NPCs, a list of NPCs with time and
affinity
links attached, a list of NPCs who offer quests, and, if applicable, another
list
of NPCs with affinity links attached. These lists are specifically ordered so
that, if you talk to everyone in the order I’ve put them in the guide, you will
have to talk to as few people as possible to register them all on the chart AND
get their affinity links. When I originally played the game for this guide, I
would talk to every NPC and then talk to every NPC again to create affinity
links.
The way I’ve formatted this gets rid of that hassle and just presents a
streamlined order in which you can talk to NPCs to make the best use of your
time.
However, you don’t necessarily need to follow the guide to the letter. There
are a
few principles I picked up on over the course of playing the game:
-An affinity link between two characters will only be formed if both characters
are registered on the Affinity Chart.
-Completing a quest often automatically updates affinity links. If it doesn’t,
then it is quite possible that talking to certain NPCs after the quest is
completed will create affinity links. That is why all named characters’ quests
are
listed in this guide.
-As per the last point, quests often act as triggers for affinity links to
become
available. However - and this was the key to my success - they only act as
triggers for links that involve either the NPC who gave you the quest or an NPC
that was involved in the quest in some capacity. This means that, if you
complete
a quest, you don’t need to talk to everyone in the game in the hopes that one of
them now has an affinity link. Instead, talking to the quest-giver, any NPCs
involved in the quest, and any NPCs who have links with them is all you need to
do
to find any links that may have been triggered by the quest.
If you are going to follow this guide to the letter, you will notice quickly
that
the instructions state things like, “Talk to [X character] at 3:00 for [affinity
link]. There are two things to note here. One is the time. All NPCs have several
lines of dialogue available to play, but they are time-specific. For instance,
character A may be available from 18:00 to 6:00. From 18:00 to 21:00, character
A
may have dialogue X, then from 21:00 to 0:00 they may have dialogue Y, then from
0:00 to 3:00 they may have dialogue X again, and then from 3:00 to 6:00 they may
have dialogue Y again. Often times, an affinity link is found as part of
dialogue
X or dialogue Y, meaning you actually have to talk to them at the right time to
trigger the link. However, I have not gone through to determine the time frames
that each character engages in each set of dialogue. Instead, I just wrote down
whatever time worked for me. So, if I say “talk to [X character] at 3:00”, that
means that switching your clock to 3:00 and talking to the character is
GUARANTEED
to get you the affinity link. However, that doesn’t mean 3:00 is the ONLY time
they will give you the link.
The other thing to note is that, at any given time, you can get different
dialogue
by talking to the character twice. Sometimes the affinity links are held in the
first bit of dialogue, and sometimes they are in the second. I make no
distinction: if talking to a character at the specified time doesn’t get you the
link... talk to them again, because it’s likely that the affinity is in the
second
bit of dialogue, then.
Finally, a few notes about affinity. First of all, this is a guide to get the
affinity chart as “complete” as it can be. I define “complete” as, “there is
nothing else you can do in the game to change any of the links beyond what they
currently are”. This does not, however, mean that all the links are necessarily
positive ones. For instance, one series of quests ends up with a green affinity
link turning into a red one - red being a much worse relationship between the
two
characters than green. However, the red link is more “complete” than the green
one
is. So don’t be alarmed if some links never get very “good”, or actually get
worse, over the course of the game. The final affinity chart is more or less
representative of the “final” state of NPCs and their relationships to one
another.
At the bottom of this guide is a list of the “best” possible affinity links
characters can have. It can be used as a checklist of sorts if you need it.
There are five colors of affinity.
Blue circle with a smiley face - represents an extremely close bond
Green square with a smiley face - represents a pretty close and friendly bond
Yellow hexagon with a neutral face - represents a neutral or acquaintance bond
Orange spiky shape with an angry face - represents a mild annoyance, dislike,
rivalry, or other slightly negative emotion
Red spiky shape with X’s for eyes - represents a very, very poor relationship
And one last thing, a note on quests: I do my best here to discuss the quests’
prerequisites and requirements, just for the sake of completeness. Several
quests
require a certain amount of “Area Affinity”, which is gained by creating
affinity
links and completing quests in or around one of the five populated areas of the
game. If you follow the guide closely, you will never have to worry about having
enough Area Affinity to take a quest. I didn’t ever have to worry about building
up Area Affinity during my playthrough, because I was taking every quest and
continually searching for affinity links. Since even quests given by non-named
NPCs can give Area Affinity, I have made a point to list such quests at the
beginning of every new game segment.
If the guide says “talk to x character to get y link”, but x character offers a
quest and won’t give you y link, completing the quest will give you access to
the
link, though for the most part I’ve tried to avoid that issue in writing the
guide.
With all that said, let’s go on to the guide.

{3} Affinity Guide [AFFG]
=========================
***Be warned from this point forward: Spoilers abound!***
Note: This is written as if it is your first playthrough through the game,
meaning
you have no access to items before they are naturally available in the game and
you are following the game’s level curve. However, it may actually be easier to
try to complete the Affinity Chart in a second playthrough, because you will not
have to worry about fighting any enemies far above your level.

between Jan and Minnie.
After this link has been created, talking to Dionysis at any time will result in

to
decision-making.

Completing Out-of-Luck Giorgio creates the blue Giorgio-Paola link, “Trusting
Family”.
Completing Pestering Paola creates the yellow Giorgio-Paola link, “Wants to
Play”.
Regardless of which quest was completed, the affinity link between Giorgio and
Paola (blue or yellow) that is formed from completing this quest is the best
link
you can get between Giorgio and Paola.
Jackson will offer the quest Jackson’s Awakening. This quest has a choice you

Shulk
in the lead. She has to talk about her father. After she does this, she will
offer
the quest Desiree’s Future. This quest requires 4.5 stars affinity with Colony 9
Area: if you have completed all quests, including non-named NPC quests, and
gained
all affinity links available up to this point, you should have enough affinity
to
take this quest. If not, it will be available later once you have some more area
affinity.
This quest has a choice you must make at one point, and the choice determines
which of two later quests you will be able to take as well as affinity links
between characters. See section 5 for an explanation of this quest that is
conducive to decision-making.

{3.08} Makna Forest [MKFS]
***************************
The “Makna Forest” section covers affinity links and quests that are available
after the party has reached Makna Forest.
Quests by non-named NPCs that are now available: The Gem Man’s Invention, in
Colony 9; Monster Quests 1-4, in Makna Forest
Not long after reaching Makna Forest, a second female character joins your team.
From this point forward, it is technically possible to complete the quest Paola
and Narine; however, it requires a very high affinity between the female
characters in the party, so it may be some time before you have the necessary
affinity to complete the quest.
At the entrance to Colony 6, Otharon will offer the quest The Road Home. At any
point between now and the end of Galahad Fortress, you can take this quest and
begin the reconstruction of Colony 6. After Galahad Fortress, Dulland will offer
the quest To Colony 6! in place of Otharon’s quest, which will also enable you
to
begin Colony 6 reconstruction. You will not lose access to any affinity links
and
quests if you chose to take Dulland’s quest over Otharon’s. That being said, it
is
much easier to keep track of what quests and links you have and haven’t done if
you do them slowly as you progress, rather than all at once at the end of the
game, so I’d recommend taking Otharon’s quest. Neither Otharon’s nor Dulland’s
quest has any affinity rewards, but both are necessary to begin Colony 6
reconstruction, which has many quests and affinity links available.
Completing either The Road Home or To Colony 6! will cause all quests from NPCs
at
the Refugee Camp, including those offered by non-named NPCs, to expire. (The
exception is Earnest’s quests, which do not expire.) Make sure you’ve completed
all the Refugee Camp quests and created all the relevant affinity links before
completing the quest to return to Colony 6.
Once the Colony 6 reconstruction has begun, the following quests are available
from characters that have relocated to Colony 6:
Anna will offer the quest A Selfish Girl’s Mistake. This quest requires 1.5
stars
affinity with Colony 6 Area.
Completing this quest automatically creates the blue Kiroki-Nikita link,
“Friends
Always”, the blue Anna-Kiroki link, “Friends Always”, and the blue Anna-Nikita
link, “Friends Always”. These are the best affinity links you can get between
these characters.
Satata will offer the quest Satata’s Younger Brother. This quest has no affinity
rewards.
After the quest Satata’s Younger Brother has been completed, Satata will offer
the
quest Rest in Peace. This quest requires 1.5 stars affinity with Colony 6 Area.
This quest has no affinity rewards.
If you chose to complete the quest Spirits Raised instead of Imaginations
Tempered
(see section 5), Ewan will offer the quest What is Love?! This quest has no
affinity rewards, but is necessary to complete in order to take a later quest
that
does have rewards.
After the quest What is Love?! has been completed, Ewan will offer the quest

Matryona
(green or red) that is formed from completing this quest is the best link you
can
get between Ewan and Matryona.

quest, the quest Making a New Path will be triggered and must be completed. This
quest has no affinity rewards.
Olga will offer the quest Chemist’s Reopening. This quest has no affinity

but is necessary to complete in order to take a later quest that does have
rewards.
-------------------------------------
{3.08.01} Colony 6 Recruitment [CLRC]
-------------------------------------
After the reconstruction of Colony 6 has begun, you can supply materials and
money
to Juju at the Reconstruction HQ. When the reconstruction has progressed to
certain levels, you can invite NPCs from other places around Bionis to move to
Colony 6. This has effects on affinity, as you may imagine. Specifically, any
character that has the option of moving to Colony 6 will have links that are
only
available once they have moved to Colony 6. In other words, for every character
that can move to Colony 6, there is no reason not to have them move, as far as
affinity as concerned.
There are six characters that are an exception to this rule. These six are in
three pairs, and each pair is mutually exclusive. Because only one character in
each pair can move to Colony 6, they both have the opportunity to have affinity
links in Colony 6, and also outside it. In other words, each character will have
affinity links regardless of whether you invite them or not, though the links
will
be with different characters depending on whether you invited them or not. These
pairs are as follows:
From Colony 9: Perrine and Mefimefi
From Frontier Village: Gowago and Minana
From Alcamoth: En Argentis and Zel Argentis
See section 5 for an explanation of these characters that is conducive to
decision-making.
All immigrants require certain levels of reconstruction progress, as listed
below
(spoilers ahead):

Pokapoka - requires Housing Level 2 and a population of 30
Norara - requires Housing Level 3 and either Perrine or Mefimefi to have been
invited
Berryjammy - requires Housing Level 3 and Nature Level 3
Gowago - requires Housing Level 5, a population of 100, and Berryjammy to have
been invited; mutually exclusive to Minana

to have been invited; mutually exclusive to Gowago
From Alcamoth:
Talonyth - requires Housing Level 1 and Commerce Level 1
Ma’crish - requires Housing Level 2
Yura - requires Housing Level 3 and a 25% complete reconstruction
Jer’ell - requires Housing Level 4
Don Argentis - requires Housing Level 4 and Nature Level 4
En Argentis - requires Housing Level 5 and Don Argentis to have been invited;
mutually exclusive to Zel Argentis
Zel Argentis - requires Housing Level 5 and Don Argentis to have been invited;
mutually exclusive to En Argentis
From the Hidden Machina Village:
Neonik - requires Housing Level 5 and Nature Level 5
Shilx - requires Housing Level 5, Commerce Level 5, and a population of 120
The levels of reconstruction require access to further and further areas of the
game, as detailed below (spoilers ahead):
Housing level 1 - requires access to Bionis’ Leg
Housing level 2 - requires access to Makna Forest
Housing level 3 - requires access to Eryth Sea
Housing level 4 - requires access to Mechonis Field
Housing level 5 - requires access to Central Factory
Commerce level 1 - requires access to Satorl Marsh

Commerce level 5 - requires the Mechonis Core to be completed
Nature level 1 - requires access to Bionis’ Leg
Nature level 2 - requires access to Frontier Village
Nature level 3 - requires access to Valak Mountain
Nature level 4 - requires access to the Fallen Arm
Nature level 5 - requires access to the expanded Bionis’ Interior
Special level 1 - requires access to Bionis’ Leg
Special level 2 - requires access to Eryth Sea
Special level 3 - requires access to Valak Mountain
Special level 4 - requires access to the expanded Bionis’ Interior
Special level 5 - requires access to the expanded Prison Island
Additionally, when certain levels of reconstruction and locations are reached,
quests will trigger themselves. They are as follows:
Defend Colony 6 - Mechon: Reconstruction at 15% and Makna Forest reached
Defend Colony 6 - Reptile: Reconstruction at 35% and Eryth Sea reached
Defend Colony 6 - Elite: Reconstruction at 55% and Hidden Machina Village
reached
Defend Colony 6 - Ancient: Reconstruction at 75% and Mechonis Core finished
Defend Colony 6 - Demon: Reconstruction at 95% and Mechonis Core finished
At the moment, it is possible to raise the reconstruction level of Housing to 2,
of Commerce to 2, of Nature to 1, and of Special to 1. In doing so, the
requirements to invite Werner (Colony 9) to Colony 6 are fulfilled.

providing Kofuko with Walnut Grapes leads to a worse affinity link between
Kofuko
and Migaga than the Bitter Kiwis do. Therefore, if you want the better affinity

==========================================
{4} Highest Possible Affinity Links [HPAL]
==========================================
This section details the highest possible affinity links between any two
characters. In the case of links where the player’s choice affects the color of
the link, both will be listed, using “OR” to differentiate. If you see an “OR”,
this is a Mutually Exclusive Link. Check that section for more information on
the
differences. A link listed as “[Color] OR None” means that the decision you make
either results in an affinity link of the color listed, or no affinity link at
all.
The vast majority of characters that can move to Colony 6 only have affinity
links
after moving to Colony 6, and not before. Therefore, they will be listed in
Colony
6. There are 6 characters, though, that can have affinity links with Colony 6 if
they move there, or affinity links with characters in their ‘hometown’ if they
stay there. They will be listed twice and a note will be made about that.

{5} Mutually Exclusive Links [MTEL]
===================================
The purpose of this section is to list every quest, decision, or Colony 6
invitation that may lead to alternate affinity links, which are indicated in
section 4 as “OR”.
There are four ways in which a decision can affect affinity links:
1) Character A offers Quest A, and Character B offers Quest B. The two quests
are
mutually exclusive, and have different affinity rewards.
2) During a quest, or in the overworld, a character may ask for your input on a
situation. The answer you choose will create different affinity links.
3) During a quest, you may have the option of giving an item to one of two
characters. The character you choose will create different affinity links.
4) There are 3 sets of mutually exclusive Colony 6 invitees. The character you
choose to invite determines what affinity links both characters can have.
The description of each choice includes “Ultimate Outcome”. The purpose of the
“Ultimate Outcome” note is to tell you what the absolutely final affinity
outcome
of this link is. In some places in the game, you have the option to make a
choice,
but a quest or event later in the game ends up making the affinity links the
same
regardless of which choice you picked. For instance, the quest The Master’s
Successor. If you pick Cherri, you get a green Cherri-Dobadoba link, and if you
pick Gadada, you get a green Gadada-Dobadoba link instead. But much later in the
game, completing the quest Presents for Priceless Pupils creates a blue Gadada-
Dobadoba link and a blue Cherri-Dobadoba link, so it doesn’t matter HERE which
choice you picked in The Master’s Successor, because either way, both Cherri and
Gadada will have blue links with Dobadoba by the end. Thus, the “Ultimate
Outcome”
note for The Master’s Successor would just say: “Regardless of who you pick,
both
characters will have a blue link with Dobadoba by the end of the game.” The
“Ultimate Outcome” note is only present for quests whose affinity rewards change
later in the game.
The points where you have to make decisions are listed here in roughly the order
you will encounter them traveling throughout the game.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Quest: Romantic Notions of a Girl (Monica) OR Romantic Notions of a Boy
(Andreas)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Background: Monica is in love with Erik, and Andreas is in love with Monica.
Both
Monica and Andreas know the legend that giving someone a Tephra Drop makes them
fall in love with whoever gave it to them. Monica wants you to get the Tephra
Drop
for her, and Andreas wants you to get it for him.
Choice: After accepting both quests, the choice is between Option A, giving the
Tephra Drop to Monica (thus completing Romantic Notions of a Girl) OR Option B,
giving it to Andreas (completing Romantic Notions of a Boy).
Option A: This creates the red Monica-Andreas link, “Parted Ways”, and the blue
Monica-Erik link, “Mutual Love?”
Option B: This creates the blue Monica-Andreas link, “Passionate”, and the
orange
Monica-Erik link, “Parted Ways”.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Quest: Overworked and Underpaid (Giorgio)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Background: In this quest, Giorgio is overworking himself, and Shulk sees a
vision
of him collapsing due to the stress. Your party has two options: talk to Giorgio
to convince him not to overwork himself, or talk to his daughter Paola in the
hopes that she can help him stop working so hard.
Choice: Option A, talk to Giorgio, OR Option B, talk to Paola.
Option A: This does not create an affinity link between Giorgio and Paola and
will
allow you to take the quest Pestering Paola in the future. Pestering Paola
automatically creates a yellow Paola-Giorgio link, “Wants to Play”.
Option B: This creates a green Paola-Giorgio link, “Happy Family”, and will
allow
you to take the quest Out-of-Luck Giorgio in the future. Out-of-Luck Giorgio
automatically creates a blue Paola-Giorgio link, “Trusting Family”.
Ultimate Outcome: Option A results in a yellow Paola-Giorgio link.
Option B results in a blue Paola-Giorgio link.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Overworld Dialogue: Arnaut and Francoise (Arnaut)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Background: After completing the quest Flattened Flowers from Francoise, talking
to Arnaut makes him start thinking about how Francoise is doing. You have the
option to tell him either to go find out by himself, or that she is doing just
fine.
Choice: “You should ask her for yourself” or “She’s doing fine”.
Option A: This creates the orange Arnaut-Francoise link, “Together Apart”.
Speaking to Francoise makes it a green link, “Happily Married”. Later in the

{6} NPC Locations and Times [LCTM]
==================================
Of course, one of the major problems that comes from trying to get affinity
links,
quests, etc. is that not all NPCs are available at all times, and those that are

sometimes end up moving around the overworld. This section contains a quick
description of where and when each NPC can be found.
Note that the NPC may not spend all their time in the location listed. Often
times, the first or last hour (or two) of their listed time is spent moving to
or
from their static location.
The times used here are as the game has them. They’re not always accurate, but
as
a general rule, you’re safe if you go for either 10:00 or 22:00, or a similar
time
that’s in the middle of the listed times.

{7} Copyright and Credits [CPCR]
================================
The first credit, of course, is to Nintendo and Monolith Soft for bringing us
this
game. For making this specific guide, I used three sources:
1) amarise’s sidequest guide, also hosted here on GameFAQs: when I was playing
through the game, I was taking every quest and marking down how they triggered
affinity links, and so for ease of playing I used amarise’s guide. You may
notice
that some of the quests in this guide appear in the same order that they did in
amarise’s guide.
2) The Xenoblade Wiki(a), which I used for several factors: the NPC Locations
and
Times section; getting information on some links and quests I was never able to
take due to them being mutually exclusive in game; the prerequisites for guides;
and some information on Colony 6 Reconstruction. For the most part, I did this
because it saved time on my end, and I don’t claim any of that information to
have
been discovered or documented by me.
3) Finally, the xenoblade affinity chart
(
http://www.raregamer.co.uk/forums/piyoz/xenoblade_affinitychart.png) served as
a
resource for telling me what to expect the highest affinity between every group
of
characters was. There are cases where that image is actually incorrect, as I
discovered on my own, so I didn’t use this as the be-all-end-all for my guide. I
tried to do as much individual research as I possibly could.
That being said, this guide was conceptualized, drafted, formatted, etc. all by
me. It may not be used or reproduced in any fashion except for personal use.
Only
GameFAQs has permission to post it. You may contact me, however, if you’d like
to
do something with this guide - translate it, etc. and we will see what we can
work
out. Xenoblade Chronicles and all elements thereof are not owned by me, but
rather
Monolith Soft and Nintendo.

{8} Contact Me [CTCM]
=====================
I encourage you to contact me. Specifically, there are a handful of places in
this
guide where I have expressed uncertainty about something or directly written
that
I don’t actually know if a certain result can be accomplished by doing something
in this game. PLEASE contact me if you’d like to clarify or correct anything you
see that I seem to be uncertain about. For that matter, please contact me if you
see a problem with anything I’m CERTAIN about, and contact me with any typos,
inaccuracies, or just general questions about this guide or affinity links in
Xenoblade Chronicles. I’ll be very happy to help.
You can contact me by messaging my GameFAQs account, “Stargleam”. I would prefer
that because I’m not comfortable communicating using a personal email address. I
check GameFAQs often enough that I will be prompt in responding to your message,
however.
