GENERAL GAMEPLAY AND SCORING [xgeneral]
===============================================================================
Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy is a rhythm game that requires you to touch, slide,
and hold on the 3DS touch screen while viewing cues from the top screen.
There is an "RPG twist" to the game where you can level up characters, equip
skills and items to help you out during the game. All this is detailed later
in this guide.
There are mainly 3 types of stages:
- Battle Music Stage (BMS): upbeat battle songs with 4 lanes of notes to watch
- Field Music Stage (FMS): overworld or "running" music with a single lane
- Event Music Stage (EMS): cinematic stage with a single, varied lane similar
to Elite Beat Agents (except on the top screen)
In addition to the above 3 types, there is also an additional "opening/ending"
stage mode which is not scored and is very simple.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SCORING AND LOSING
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Your HP meter is in the top-right of ************************
the top screen. It is the combined HP * Grade Score
of all your party members. Once it ************************
empties out, it's game over for that * F 0 to *
stage. * E 2,000,000 to *
* D 3,000,000 to *
There are several grades you can * C 4,000,000 to *
receive, from F (the worst), * B 5,000,000 to *
to SSS (the best). * A 6,000,000 to *
* S 7,000,000 to *
See table to the right for the * SS 9,000,000 to *
exact scoring structure. * SSS 9,999,999 *
************************
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
STOIC BONUS
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- In order to achieve SS and SSS grades, you will need the "stoic bonus", which
is the bonus received from playing a song with NO equipment and NO items.
At the end of the song, you will receive a 2,000,000 point bonus.
- Without the Stoic bonus, you can only achieve a max score of 7,999,999.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
FEATURE DRIVE / EXTENDED CUT
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- As long as you have *any* abilities or item equipped, you will have a chance
for the Feature Drive section of a song. By doing well during the silver note
section of a song, you will unlock the gold note section of the song, which
is the Feature Drive section.
- For BMS, you will summon an esper (Ifrit, Shiva, Ramuh, Odin, or Bahamut).
- For FMS, it involves calling a chocobo (Red, Black, Yellow, White).
- For EMS, this involves seeing the Extended Cut of the song.
- If you have nothing equipped (stoic mode), you will not be eligible for the
Feature Drive section and you will not see any silver/gold notes.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
GAINING EXPERIENCE
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- At the end of a song you will gain experience, and it is divided among your
four active party members. Characters max out their level at 99.
- Generally speaking, experience is based on how well you perform and the
difficulty of the song. But for BMS stages, the number and types of enemies
you defeat determine your experience.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
GAINING RHYTHMIA
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- You gain Rhythmia after playing any song in any mode. For every 500 Rhythmia
you will unlock something new -- it could be a new song, a new crystal shard,
new songs/movies in music player, or new StreetPass customizations. All
unlocks are preset and not random.
- Rhythmia caps at 99,999.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
GAINING ITEMS
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Items can be found by clearing songs.
- In FMS, sometimes moogles will appear and give you an item, in addition to
the item you get for finishing the song.
- In BMS, the number of items you find is determined by the number of monsters
you defeat.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
COLLECTACARDS
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- These are simply for collection purposes for viewing in the gallery.
- Gaining multiple copies of the same card will upgrade it to holo, etc.
- Can be found via item drops or via password entry.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"BEATING" THE GAME
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- When you reach 10,000 Rhythmia, you will encounter Chaos as a BMS. Beating
this BMS will "end" the game with the credits, but of course it's not over!
This game has tons of replayability and things to unlock.
Q: Is there a story?
A: There is a very thin story, but no, not really.
Q: What is this game like?
A: This game is similar to Elite Beat Agents (or Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan! for
the rhythm game enthusiast), but with an RPG twist. One could also say it's
similar to Rock Band, DDR, etc., but then that's like saying all Rhythm
games are alike (and they are, to a certain extent).
Q: How to I get a score above S?
A: You must de-equip everything and get the stoic bonus (+2,000,000 points).
Q: This sucks, I'm forced to ignore the RPG elements for score!
A: It is best to concentrate on score for Challenge Mode because all scores
there are recorded. Then, utilize the RPG elements for Chaos Shrine because
NO scores are recorded there (besides # of times played).
Q: How to I unlock [some song] or [some character]?
A: See the unlock sections at the bottom of this guide.
Q: How to I unlock [some song from Chaos Shrine] in Challenge Mode?
A: For most songs, by simply gaining Rhythmia. See the unlock section.
However there are 4 songs that you can never unlock in Challenge Mode, and
are only available in Chaos Shrine:
- Zanarkand (FFX) (FMS)
- Vana'diel March (FFXI) (FMS)
- Ending Movie (FFXII) (BMS)
- Defiers of Fate (FFXIII) (BMS)
Q: What is the fastest way to level up?
A: Typically playing BMS stages is the best, because experience is based on
the # of enemies you defeat. Defeating a large number of enemies can get
5,000+ EXP easily. Also, Magic Pots grant a high amount of EXP if you are
lucky enough to find them in a battle.
And of course, you can always use EXP Scrolls to teach your party leader
the +EXP skills.
Q: How do I get EXP Hound? (the ability that gives all EXP to one character)
A: Jenova Synthesis drops it, so play One-Winged Angel or JENOVA. I've heard
other reports of it dropping from the DLC FMS stages. It will also drop
from random Dark Note bosses.
Q: How do I get a limit break for [some character]?
A: Only the default cast of characters get limit breaks. They all get them at
level 40. All unlocked characters have no limit break.
Q: Who is the best character / what is the best party?
A: Depends on what you're trying to do. For score, it absolutely does not
matter since you should go for the stoic bonus. For FMS, characters with
high AGI and LCK. For BMS, characters with high STR and MAG, and with limit
breaks, preferably. Generally, characters with a lot of support skills are
not as good, unless you are really struggling with a song.
For Chaos Shrine, it is good to have a leader with high AGI, and then have
the rest of the characters with good offensive skills and/or limit breaks.
A good basic party would be Onion Knight or Zidane as leader (high AGI),
then Squall and Cloud for STR abilities, and Terra or Shantotto as a MAG
abilities and limit breaks.
Q: How do I fight Chaos again?
A: You can only fight Chaos in his music stage once, when you get 10,000 Rm.
You can never repeat this battle. However, Chaos will randomly appear as
Boss #3 in Dark Notes numbered >90.
===============================================================================
STREET PASS + MULTIPLAYER [xmulti]
===============================================================================
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
STREET PASS
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- The Street Pass functionality in this game is that you can customize a player
card and trade them with passerbys. Additional bylines, characters, etc. are
unlocked as you play the game.
- The most notable function of Street Pass is being able to trade Dark Notes,
which are playable in the Chaos Shrine (covered later in this guide). If you
get a really good dark note (rare drops), attach it and pass it along! :)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MULTIPLAYER
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- There is no online multiplayer functionality in this game.
- There is local multiplayer in the Chaos Shrine, where you can team up with up
to 4 other people to play a Dark Note.
===============================================================================
SERIES MODE [xseries]
===============================================================================
You have to play through each series mode set once to unlock the songs in
Challenge Mode. However, the OP/ED songs are only playable via Series Mode
in the "tapping the crystal" minigame as opposed to an actual FMS/BMS/EMS.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
UNLOCKING EXPERT/ULTIMATE COURSES
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- To unlock "Expert" and "Ultimate" courses for Series Mode, you must complete
each song from that game in Challenge Mode on the corresponding difficulty.

Challenge Mode is essentially the "freeplay" mode for Theatrhythm. You can play
any song in Basic or Expert mode, and once you beat a song with A or better in
Expert Mode, you will unlock the Ultimate mode version of that song.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
UNLOCKING MORE SONGS
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- To unlock songs in Challenge Mode, you must play Series Mode first. To unlock
additional songs not found in Series Mode, you must gain Rhythmia. See the
unlocking section for details on the required Rhythmia and list of songs.
All unlocked songs, including DLC, will appear in Challenge Mode. However, it
is NOT possible to unlock the following songs. These songs are only available
via Chaos Shrine.
- Zanarkand (FMS)
- Vana'diel March (FMS)
- Ending Movie (BMS)
- Defiers of Fate (BMS)
After receiving your first Dark Note through playing other modes, you unlock
Chaos Shrine. Here, you will play an FMS and BMS course, and the catch is that
the note sections are randomized.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
HOW TO UNLOCK MORE NOTES
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- When you beat a new Dark Note, you will receive another new Dark Note.
- Difficulty of the next Dark Note is determined by the average level of your
current party.
- If you play with an all level 99 party, the No. of your Dark Note will be
randomized. This is a precaution the developers put into this game in case
you have all current characters at level 99 prior to unlocking characters
whose shards only appear in lower numbered Dark Notes.
- Playing the same Dark Note over and over will not unlock new Dark Notes.
- If you delete your newest Dark Note, simply play the top Dark Note listed to
unlock another new Dark Note.
- You can use Street Pass to get new Dark Notes from others.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
HOW GAMEPLAY WORKS
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Always 2 stages: FMS + BMS.
- Triggers are RANDOMIZED (so if you have 2 notes with the same song, they
will most likely have different triggers).
- There are 3 bosses for every Dark Note. Your character stats and performance
will determine which boss you meet. The 3rd boss always drops crystals.
- During FMS, you should have a high agility character to get far enough to see
the "2nd or 3rd boss" sign. This unlocks the possibility of fighting the 2nd
and 3rd boss in BMS. If you don't see this sign, you will always fight the
1st boss.
- During BMS, if you got the sign from FMS, you must have 75-100% of your HP
as you kill the 2nd enemy to unlock the 3rd boss. When you see "Boss No. 3"
text appear on the upper right of the top screen, you will know you will be
facing it next. If you do not do well, you will not see any text and will
fight the 2nd boss instead.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NUMBERING SYSTEM
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- The "No." on the Dark Note represents the difficulty. This is generated as the
average of your current party at the time of unlocking the Dark Note.
- The "Mv." on the Dark Note represents the songs. See below for the key.

RECOMMENDED PARTY SETUPS [xparty]
===============================================================================
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Stoic Mode Setup
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Purpose: Focuses on characters with the highest base STR stat (BMS), plus a
leader with good base AGI and LCK stats (FMS/EMS). With this setup,
you will maximize the number of monsters you can kill in BMS while
still being able to find moogles/chests in FMS.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Firion (Leader)
--> Highest AGI of the bunch. Almost naturally maxes STR at 241.
- Kain
--> Naturally maxes STR at 255.
- Cloud
--> Almost naturally maxes STR at 240.
- Sephiroth
--> Naturally maxes STR at 255.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Alternatives:
- Warrior of Light, Lightning, Squall
--> Substitute any of the above for Kain/Sephiroth if you don't have them.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Chaos Shrine/Equipped Setup
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Purpose: Balances good consistent offensive skills (Terra, Sephiroth) for
normal enemies, with limit break skills (Cloud, Squall) for bosses.
As leader, Terra has a high enough AGI stat (with Agility Up) to reach
the Boss 2/3 sign in the Chaos Shrine FMS stage even at Lv. 99 notes.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Terra (Leader): Trance, Fira, Agility Up, Blizzara (your choice on -ra skill)
--> Trance powers up her magic skills, and Agility Up allows her to make it
to the Boss sign of any Dark Note.
- Cloud: Strength Up (Lv 3), Strength Up (Lv 2), Omnislash
--> Although his STR is already maxed, Strength Up's multiplier pushes it
even higher.
- Squall: Lion Heart, Strength Up (Lv 2), Focus (Lv 3)
--> Almost like Cloud, but lacks Strength Up (Lv 3). But Focus is a good
alternative.
- Sephiroth: Thundaga, Blizzara, Focus (Lv 1), Strength Up (Lv 1)
--> Not has good of a mage as Terra, but he has both high STR and MAG.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Alternatives:
- Shantotto: Ancient Magic, Fire, Luck Up (or Magic Up if not maxed), Blizzara
--> Good substitute for Sephiroth. Brings a limit to the party, but lacks
Sephiroth's harder hitting skills along with his high STR stat.
- Onion Knight: Sacrifice (Lv 2), Fire, Blizzard, Ninjutsu
--> Makes a good leader (sub for Terra). Brings yet another limit break to
the party. However, he has very weak magic skills and STR is also not
maxed which is a problem, since his limit break relies on both STR/AGI.
Still, a good early game choice if you don't have any of Terra's better
skills yet.
- Zidane: Grand Lethal, Sinewy Etude (Lv 2), Hero's Rime (Lv 1)
--> Personally I don't like Zidane that much, but a LOT of people do. Sub for
party leader due to his high AGI. His limit break is based on STR and
level, so you'll want him at Lv 99 if you want to make the most use of</pre><pre id="faqspan-3">
him. He pairs well with Shantotto and Onion Knight (if you chose them)
since he has song skills which raise STR.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Libra Setup
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Purpose: Focuses on characters who have the Libra skill. This is to identify
what bosses have in the Chaos Shrine without having to constantly
replay the note over and over. Libra will identify what bosses drop
*at the time of unlocking the note* based on the # and level of Libra
you have equipped. Example: Cid (Lv 3) + Lightning (Lv 1) = 4 reveals.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Locke (Leader): Libra (Lv 2), Spare Change, Vigilance, Treasure Hunter (Lv 3)
--> Great as party leader due to his high AGI, and you even get some room for
mistakes due to Vigilance. Alternatively you can also give him Recall in
lieu of Spare Change, but that requires a scroll.
- Cid: Libra (Lv 3), Boost (Lv 3), Luck Up (Lv 2)
--> Cid really really sucks. He sucks a lot. But he is the only character
with Libra (Lv 3), so you pretty much have to use him.
- Lightning: Libra (Lv 1), Bluff or Sinewy Etude (Lv 3), Fira/Blizarra/Thundara
--> Nothing much to say. Libra's high cost kind of kills her skill set.
- Faris: Libra (Lv 1), Fira, Blizzara (your choice on -ra skill)
--> Nothing much to say here either.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Alternatives:
- Prishe: Libra (Lv 1), Strength Up (Lv 2), Strength Up (Lv 1)
--> Substitute for Faris. Has no activated skills but maxes out STR if you
prefer that.
- Aerith: Libra (Lv 1), any other skills you want
--> I don't recommend using Aerith, but I am listing her since she is the
last character who also has Libra. Her skills are all defensive so in my
opinion, she is not worth using.
- Any other strong character you like (Cloud, Squall, etc.):
--> A libra party is typically very weak, so you might want to balance it out
with some good offensive characters like Cloud or Squall. You might find
that with Cid and Locke, you are already revealing enough items.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tank Setup
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Purpose: Focuses on characters with highly defensive skills for when you simply
cannot beat a song. Basically any characters with Elegy (constant
damage reduction) and Paeon (constant HP regen) are recommended.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Aerith (Leader): Elegy (Lv 3), Paeon (Lv 2)
--> Highest AGI of this party, but it's not that great. If you really want
to, you can swap in Thoroughbred to get the best chocobo for FMS.
- Snow: Protect (Lv 3), Elegy (Lv 3), Elegy (Lv 1)
--> Spam that Elegy (and Protect)!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Alternatives:
- Warrior of Light: Protect (Lv 3), HP Up (Lv 1), Class Change
--> Class Change and Protect are more powerful than Elegy, but require you
to be further into the song to trigger them. But since most Elegy
characters are unlocked characters, Warrior of Light might be your best
choice in early game.
- Firion: Blood Weapon, Lance (Lv 3), Brace (Lv 3)
--> Blood Weapon and Lance are questionably more effective than Paeon, as
long as Firion is in a lane which gets a lot of notes (regain HP as
Firion does damage to the enemy. Once again, a good choice for early
game when you have no unlocked characters.
- Cecil: Curaga, Protect (Lv 3), HP Up (Lv 1)
--> Maxes out HP with HP Up. Curaga and Protect don't need an explanation.
- Terra: Cura, Cure, Pray (Lv 2), any other skill you can fit
--> Last of the basic characters with decent defensive skills. Not great, but
better than nothing.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Trophy descriptions are straight from the game. Most are self-explanatory.
However, there are a few that are trickier:
- For the chocobo one (page 1), you need to use Sylkis Greens to ride the
White Chocobo. Equip the item prior to starting the FMS stage. An alternate
method is to use Aerith's Thoroughbred ability.
- Also for the chocobo one (page 1), you need to ride the Red Chocobo, which
is the slowest one, but ironically very rare. No items can summon it.
- For the summon one (page 1), you need to use Bahamut's Magicite in order to
summon Bahamut. The rest of them will appear normally.
- For defeating Chaos in a Dark Note (page 6), he appears in No. >90 Dark Notes
- For filling all critical charts (page 8), this includes EVERY non-DLC song on
EVERY difficulty.

You unlock characters by gaining colored crystals, either by gaining Rhythmia,
or by playing Chaos Shrine.
You must collect 8 crystals shards of the same color to complete a full
crystal and complete the unlock.
When playing Chaos Shrine, crystal drops are typically from the 3rd boss in
the list. The No. on the note will determine what possible drops the 3rd boss
could have.
Defeating the boss multiple times within the same BMS will provide more item
drops, if you can pull that off.
