i. INTRODUCTION CODE : INT1
=--=-=-=-=--===---=-==-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==--==--===-=-=-=-=-=-=--==-=-=-=
Guilty until proven innocent. That's the way the justice system works here.
All trials start immediately and are mandated to last no more than three days.
Prosecutors are free to introduce any evidence, fabricated or not, and
manipulate witness testimony to highlight only those facts damaging to
defendants, the truth be damned. The courts are no longer about protecting the
innoncent or punishing the guilty, but for convicting everyone.
Phoenix Wright's mission is to remedy the situation. As a defense attorney,
his duty involves preparing a vigorous defense for his client, but Wright is
about absolute truth, and he puts everything he has on the line to get to the
bottom of each and every case. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney gives you the
opportunity to guide Phoenix through five such cases, with several bound
together to uncover one of the greatest mysteries of his time.
This is accomplished through a first-person text adventure. Outside the
courtroom, you'll have to survey the areas around the scene of the crime,
collecting valuable evidence and interviewing witnesses to uncover valuable
facts. Once the court proceedings are underway, you must read through witness
testimony in order to find inconsistencies, and then Phoenix can nail the
witness to the wall with contradictory evidence. Piece together the facts,
and justice will prevail. Fail, and your client will find himself in the
pokey. Good luck!

ii. GAME MODES/GENERAL STRATEGY CODE : GM22
=--=-=-=-=--===---=-==-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==--==--===-=-=-=-=-=-=--==-=-=-=
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney features five cases. Solve one case, and you'll
unlock the next challenge. However, to navigate through each adventure, you
must utilize a couple of different modes: Detective Work and Courtroom
Questioning.
Detective Work
+-------------------------------+
Some of the key evidence for a trial can only be found by having Phoenix snoop
around for himself. After all, there's no way the prosecution is going to hand
him the keys to the case every time. Don't worry, though, because it's
impossible for Phoenix to lose while he's playing Sherlock Holmes. The game
won't allow you to proceed until all relevant clues and testimony have been
collected and heard.
Evidence collected is stored in the Court Record, a valuable menu area where
you can peruse all relevant details of the evidence or review the profiles
of the people involved in each case. The facts laid forth in the Court Record
are the ones that will be used to challenge falsehoods laid out in witness
testimony.
The menu for Detective Work has four options:
Examine - When Phoenix is in his investigative mode, he can examine his
surroundings to look for clues. When you hit the Examine button, the
picture of the area will migrate from the top to the bottom screen.
Moving the crosshairs(with stylus or d-pad) over the picture, any
item of interest will illuminate another "Examine" button. Phoenix
will automatically pick up any item that can be used as evidence.
Be sure to examine even the most mundane of objects; anything can
serve as a key to unlock a case's secrets.
Move - This lists all the locations Phoenix can travel to from his current
location. Only currently available locations are listed; as Phoenix
investigates he may find other places to travel. Obviously, it's to
our attorney's advantage to investigate every area available to him.
Also, since he cannot go directly from each area to every other area,
it's useful to note how the areas are connected. It could even help
in reconstructing the events of the crime!
Talk - Phoenix will frequently run into people while he's investigating. Make
sure to speak with everyone about all the available subjects. Sometimes
revisiting with a person after other events have unfolded will unlock
new and more revealing topics of conversation.
Present - You can also have Phoenix present evidence he has collected to an
interested party to elicit more information. These are the easiest
hints to miss, since the clues of what to present to whom can be lost
in a line of dialogue. If you ever get stuck, it's probably because
you have overlooked presenting someone with an item from the Court
Record.
Once in the courtroom, Phoenix has to cross examine each witness in order to
expose his lies. This is done by not only presenting the right evidence, but
unveiling it at the correct moment -- exactly when the lie is perpetrated.
The Judge will only brook spurious allegations for so long; present irrelevant
facts too many times and the trial will end immediately in favor of the
prosecution.
The testimony can be reviewed as often as you wish, during which you will
have two options:
Press - Phoenix will needle the witness about the current statement whenever
you choose the "Press" option. This is a valuable option because it
not only futher illuminates some facts -- sometimes you can destroy
entire stories by merely pressing certain points -- but it cannot
count against your quota of strikes and jeopardize the outcome of
the trial.
Present - Most often, a witness's falsehoods can only be exposed with
decisive evidence that directly contradicts his testimony. When
to reveal the truth arrives, press "Present" in the upper right
corner of the screen. Choose the piece of evidence that refutes
the witness's claims, and Phoenix will be one step closer to clearing
his client and uncovering the real perpetrator. Present wisely,
though, as five misses in a single court session results in an
instant guilty verdict.

| |__________________| |
Phoenix's first day in court gives him, and you, a chance to become accustomed
to the unique procedures of the justice system. To make sure you are aware
of the Court Record, the Judge will ask some basic questions about the case.
Courtroom
+-------------------------------+
1. Please state the name of the defendant in this case.
B) Larry Butz
2. Who is the victim in this case?
C) Cindy Stone
3. She died because she was...?
B) Hit with a blunt object
After these questions are answered, Larry takes the stand and virtually
testifies against himself. Phoenix will have a couple of chances to intervene,
but your efforts to have him do so are largely ceremonial.
4. (Should I...?)
Same effect with A)
OR B) Stop him from answering
5. Payne asks if Larry visited the victim's apartment the day of the murder:
Same effect with A) Have him answer honestly
OR B) Stop him from answering
However, the preceeding choices are made, Larry is in deep trouble after his
turn on the stand. Prosecutor Payne then plans to drive the conviction home
by calling his eyewitness, Frank Sahwit.
Witness Testimony
Frank Sahwit
-- Witness's Account --
+-------------------------------+
Statement 1 : I was going door-to-door, selling subscriptions, when I saw a man
fleeing an apartment.
Statement 2 : I thought he must be in a hurry because he left the door
half-open behind him.
Statement 3 : Thinking it strange, I looked inside the apartment.
Statement 4 : Then I saw her lying there... A woman... not moving... dead!
Statement 5 : I quailed in fright and found myself unable to go inside.
Statement 6 : I thought to call the police immediately.
Statement 7 : However, the phone in her apartment wasn't working.
Statement 8 : I went to a nearby park and found a public phone.
Statement 9 : I remember the time exactly. It was 1:00 PM.
Statement 10: The man who ran was without a doubt, the defendant sitting right
over there!
1. Present the Autopsy Report(Exhibit B) at Statement 9. The time of death
contradicts the witness account. Sahwit will then modify his testimony.
Witness Testimony
Frank Sahwit
-- The Time of Discovery --
+-------------------------------+
Statement 1 : You see, when I found the body, I heard the time.
Statement 2 : There was a voice saying the time... It was probably coming from
the television.
Statement 3 : Oh, but it was 3 hours off, wasn't it?
Statement 4 : I guess the victim might have been watching a video of a taped
program!
Statement 5 : That's why I thought it was 1:00 PM!
Statement 6 : Terribly sorry for the misunderstanding...
1. Present the Blackout Record(Exhibit E) at Statement 2 or 4. Without power,
the victim could not have been watching television at all, live or taped.
Again, this causes Sahwit to try and modify his story to fit the facts.
Witness Testimony
Frank Sahwit
-- The Time of Discovery --
+-------------------------------+
Statement 1 : Actually, I didn't "hear" the time... I "saw" it.
Statement 2 : There was a table clock in the apartment, wasn't there!
Statement 3 : Yeah, the murder weapon! The killer used it to hit the victim!
Statement 4 : That must have been what I saw.
1. Present "The Thinker"(Exhibit C) at Statement 3. The murder weapon was
listed as a statue in the Court Record, so there's something very suspicious
about the witness calling it a clock. After some discussion about this
fact, the judge asks Phoenix some questions about Sahwit's testimony.
2. Do you have any problems with his testimony now?
B) Yes
3. The witness knew it was a clock, because he...
A) Went into the apartment
4. A fact which is clear if you simply...
C) Try sounding the clock
The clock will report a time exactly three hours behind the current time,
which seeminly cements Sahwit's guilt and Larry's innocence. However, it's
left to establish that the clock was three hours slow at the time of the
murder.
5. Can you think of a reason as to why the clock would be 3 hours slow?
A) Yes
6. Present the Passport(Exhibit D). This shows the victim was traveling in
a different time zone, and the clock was still set to the local time of
where she had been.
With the facts clearly establish and Sahwit's testimony in tatters, the Judge
has no choice but to declare:
Mr. Larry Butz
NOT GUILTY
However! Even though Larry has been cleared of all charges, he's still
distraught over the loss of his love. In order to show Larry that Cindy still
had thoughts about her old beau, present "The Thinker"(Exhibit C) to him. The
fact that the victim was carrying around his rather heavy present showed she
still had some feelings for him.

47. Mr. White, I know what you did to this politician.
C) You blackmailed him
48. Wait a second, Mr. White...
B) You're wrong
Phoenix's brave confrontation of Mr. White doesn't pay off. Instead of
cornering White, White corner's Phoenix by naming him as Mia's killer.
Now Phoenix must defend himself...
49. Maya is obviously sympathetic to Phoenix's plight, and asks if she can
help in any way.

It's now or never. On the first day of his trial, Phoenix must face off with
Mr. White in a battle for his freedom.
1. (Hmm. If anyone's going to raise an objection about this, I suppose it's
me...)
A) Objection
Witness Testimony
Mr. Redd White
-- Witness's Account --
+-------------------------------+
Statement 1 : Let's see, it was about 9:00, I believe.
Statement 2 : I was quietly perusifying... er, that's "reading" to you, some
papers by the window.
Statement 3 : Then I heard a bedlam coming from outside.
Statement 4 : Surprised, I turned to look at the building across the way.
Statement 5 : It was then I saw him: a spiky-haired man attacking a woman
with long hair!
Statement 6 : Needless to say that man was none other than you, Mr. Lawyer!
Statement 7 : I called Miss May over at once. She, too, was flabbergasted
of course.
Statement 8 : The victim, she... she ran away, but you gave chase!
Statement 8a : The victim ran to the left, and you gave chase!
Statement 9 : Finally, there was a terrible impaction! Then it was all over...
1. Press Statement 8. (Changes Statement 8 to Statement 8a)
2. Present May Testimony (Exhibit I) at Statement 8a. This account
contradicts the direction that Mia ran.
However, Maya observes that White looks certain of his testimony. The judge
asks for an explanation of the contradiction.
3. Can you explain this contradiction to the court?
C) Both are right
How can both be right? The next step is to point out on the map of the Fey &
Co. Law Offices where White must have been standing.
4. Place the cursor over the "K" in the red circle and hit Present.
Witness Testimony
Mr. Redd White
-- She Ran to the "Left" --
+-------------------------------+
Statement 1 : Miss May's testimony was correct... as was mine!
Statement 2 : When you assaulted the girl, she first ran to the left.
Statement 3 : An then you hit her, savagely! That is what I saw.
Statement 4 : Next, with the last of her strength, she ran to the right.
Statement 5 : You chased her, and delivered the final blow.
Statement 6 : That is what Miss May saw.
Statement 7 : You see? You hit her twice!
Statement 8 : Don't you remember, Mr. Lawyer?
1. Present Mia's Autopsy Report (Exhibit F) at Statement 7.
Witness Testimony
Mr. Redd White
-- The Two Accounts --
+-------------------------------+
Statement 1 : Umm, well, see -- I looked at the other window when I heard
that thing fall.
Statement 1a : A light stand was lying on the floor when I looked.
Statement 2 : Then, the next moment, I saw Miss Mia run to the left!
Statement 3 : The killer, you, attacked her... but she dodged.
Statement 4 : Umm... and then...
Statement 5 : She turned, and ran for the door!
Statement 6 : Then you did her in with a single blow! Thwap!
White identifies "that thing" as a glass light stand. Maya thinks this is
strange.
2. Doesn't something about that strike you as odd?
A) Yeah, very odd
(Changes Statement 1 to Statement 1a)
3. Present the Glass Shards (Exhibit C) at statement 1a.
There's no way White could identify the glass as a light stand. He claims he
saw the object before it broke, but...
4. (Hmm...)
B) Big problemo
5. A person in the hotel could not have seen the stand before it fell over!
->Present the Floor Plans (Exhibit H).
Witness Testimony
Mr. Redd White
-- The Wiretapping --
+-------------------------------+
Statement 1 : It was the beginning of September... the week before the murder.
Statement 2 : I had entered the Fey & Co. Law Offices.
Statement 3 : Of course, I had done so to place the wiretap.
Statement 4 : That is when I saw this glass light stand.

Evidence collected on Day 1 makes one thing clear: the case against Mr. Powers
isn't as clear-cut as some would believe. Get ready to poke all kinds of
holes in the witness's story.
First off, Detective Gumshoe explains the prosecution's theory of the crime.
He can repeat it as many times as you like; just choose A) 'Skip it' when
you're ready to move on. The Samurai Spear will be added to the Court Record.
Statement 1 : On the day of the murder, I arrived at the guard station
at 1:00 P.M.
Statement 2 : Poor old Hammer and the rest had been doing a run-through there
since the morning.
Statement 3 : I, well, I had some errands to run that morning.
Statement 4 : Anyway, it was 1:00 when I got to the guard station.
Statement 5 : I was at the main gate from then until 5:00!
Statement 6 : Now, the murder happened at 2:30 PM, right?
Statement 7 : Interesting to me, because a certain man walked right by me
at 2:00 PM.
Statement 8 : It was Powers! That man right there, and he was heading toward
the studio!
Witness Testimony
Wendy Oldbag
-- The Man in the Photo --
+-------------------------------+
Statement 1 : I never say anything I don't mean, mind you!
Statement 2 : That morning, during the run-through of the action scene...
Statement 3 : I saw Powers trip and fall!
Statement 4 : He broke one of the props, it was a big mess.
Statement 5 : Apparently, he sprained his ankle pretty bad.
Statement 6 : You can see he's dragging his leg! See? Clear as day!
Statement 7 : That's how I know it was Powers. Happy?
At this point, the Judge is satisfied that the man in the photo is Will Powers.
Phoenix can't let that point go, however.
7. (Are you sure you're sure, Your Honor?)
A) Object
Witness Testimony
Wendy Oldbag
-- Witness's Account, cont. --
+-------------------------------+
Statement 1 : The time of poor Hammer's death was 2:30 PM, true?
Statement 2 : The only person I saw go to the studio before then was
Will Powers!
Statement 3 : No one else went there!
Statement 4 : If they had, I would have seen them!
Witness Testimony
Wendy Oldbag
-- The Other Person --
+-------------------------------+
Statement 1 : Every day after I finish my guard duties, I have one other
important job to do.
Statement 2 : I go through the photos recorded on the security computer and
check them.
Statement 3 : I throw out any photos that aren't suspicious lookin', you see.
Statement 4 : Come to think of it, now I remember throwing out one photo that
day!
Since the other person present doesn't seem capable of committing the crime,
Powers is the only suspect again. To prolong the trial, Phoenix has to come
up with a plausible alternative.
2. So, who was this person other than Mr. Powers that could have committed
murder?
C) The security lady
3. (What's my move? Maybe now's my chance to take this the whole way?)
A) Press further
4. You have proof that shows the boy could not have committed the murder?
- Present the Cardkey
Witness Testimony
Wendy Oldbag
-- My Lips Were Sealed --
+-------------------------------+
Statement 1 : Global Studios wanted me to keep quiet about something.
Statement 2 : There were... some other people at the studios on the day of
the murder.
Statement 3 : They said they had "nothing to do with it," see?
Statement 4 : So they told me to just pretend they "hadn't been at the studios
that day."
Statement 5 : But if you're going to go accusing me, I'm not letting them get
away scot free!
-- Cross Examination --
+-------------------------------+
1. Press Statement 2.
2. (I think I've already asked all my questions, but...)
B) Take a break
