II. INTRODUCTION (INTR)
-----------------------

This guide will focus on the Coin Rush mode of New Super Mario Bros. 2.

In this game, it's all about the coins.  There are a lot of ways to amass
coins.  In addition to the usual methods (gathering loose coins and getting
them from blocks), there are gold rings that make every enemy a source of
currency for a limited time and gold blocks that Mario can put on his head,
allowing him to get coins with every step he takes.  There's even an item that
turns Mario himself gold, gaining the ability to shoot fireballs that turn
anything they touch into coins.  There's so much emphasis on amassing coins;
the game even keeps a running tally of how many coins you've gathered.

Perhaps the fastest way to gather coins is the game's new Coin Rush mode.  You
play through three consecutive, randomly selected courses, trying to amass as
many coins as possible as fast as you can.  If you are judicious about hunting
down coins, you can easily finish a Coin Rush challenge with a coin tally
numbering in the thousands.

--------------------
III. OVERVIEW (OVER)
--------------------

To access Coin Rush mode, you must first clear World 1 in the main game.  Once
you do, the option will be available on the title screen.  As you progress
further in the main game, more courses will become available for play in Coin
Rush mode.

In Coin Rush mode, you play through three randomly chosen courses from a pack
of up to three different worlds from the main game.  There are three different
packs of worlds to choose from, excluding downloadable course packs.

Mushroom Pack: Courses played will come from Worlds 1, 2, and Mushroom.
Flower Pack: Courses played will come from Worlds 3, 4, and Flower.
Star Pack: Courses played will come from Worlds 5, 6, and Star.

Of the three courses chosen, the last one will always be either a Tower or
Castle course.

The object is to traverse all three courses collecting as many coins as you
can.  However, you have to be quick about it, because for each course the timer
starts at 100 seconds, except for World 1-1, where the timer starts at 50
seconds.

Once you select a pack, you will next be given the option of starting the
challenge as either Mario or White Raccoon Mario.  As White Raccoon Mario, you
are essentially invincible to all except falling into lava or bottomless pits.
The one drawback to White Raccoon Mario is that due to the inherent
invulnerability, you are unable to carry shells or bounce off of enemies.
Also, if you clear World 6 in the main game, then if you start a Coin Rush
challenge as Mario, you will have a Gold Flower as your stored item.

Once you clear a Coin Rush challenge, you will be given the option to save your
record for sending to other games via StreetPass.  You can save only one record
at a time.  If you played through the challenge as White Raccoon Mario, then a
gold and white-striped tail will appear after the coin total.  Records shared
via StreetPass can then be challenged by other players.

IV. DETAILS (DETA)
------------------

When playing through a Coin Rush challenge, there are several features to keep
in mind that are different from playing through the main game.

You must play through all three courses consecutively, and you have only one
life to do so.  If you lose that life, you will be given the option to retry
the challenge, but you must start all over again from the first course.

There are two ways to add more time: either grab a stopwatch or hit a
checkpoint flag.

Blue stopwatch: adds 10 seconds.
Green stopwatch: adds 50 seconds.
Checkpoint flag: adds 50 or 100 seconds, depending on the course.

In place of 1-Ups, there are Gold Mushrooms, which add 50 coins to your total.
For Star or Moon Coins, the first one in a course that you get is worth 10
coins, the second one is worth 20 coins, and the third one is worth 50 coins.
Any Gold Mushrooms, Star Coins, or Moon Coins that you collect as Gold Mario
will have their coin value doubled.

Gold Rings will turn all enemies gold for a brief period of time.  Any gold
enemy you defeat will earn you coins.  Any gold enemies you defeat as Gold
Mario will have their coin value doubled.

Once you clear a course in a Coin Rush challenge, you will receive a small coin
bonus depending on how much time is left on the timer.  Every 5 seconds equals
1 coin.

Lastly, if you hit the top of the flagpole at the end of a course or defeat a
boss, your cumulative coin total at that point will be doubled after the timer
bonus is added.

V. STREETPASS (STRE)
--------------------

Once you activate StreetPass for your game, you will be able to share your
saved record with other players, and receive other players' saved records for
you to challenge.  Select StreetPass Records on the menu to view any records
you have received.

You can hold up to 15 rival records at any one time.  After that, new records
will replace existing ones.  You can mark records as favorites so they won't be
replaced by newly acquired records.

Newly acquired records are marked as a Question Block.
Records marked as favorites will be indicated by a star.
Records that are marked with a lock cannot be challenged because you don't have
the required courses available yet.

When challenging another player's record, you will play through the same three
courses that player went through to establish the record.  You will not know
the exact record until you play through the three courses, after which the
rival record's total will be added to the in-game counter.  If you manage to
beat the rival record, you will receive a Crown Coin, which adds 1,000 coins to
the in-game counter.

Select My Record to view the record you have saved.  You can change the Mii
displayed here or you can challenge your own record to try and obtain a better
coin total.  You will not get a Crown Coin for beating your own record, though.

VI. DOWNLOADABLE COURSE PACKS (DOCO)
------------------------------------

Select Shop in the menu to go the Coin Rush course pack shop.  Here you can buy
more course packs for use in Coin Rush mode.  You must have available funds in
your 3DS account balance before you can purchase any course packs.

Once you purchase a course pack, if you delete it, you can download it again
without paying for it a second time.

VII. TIPS (TIPS)
----------------

It is easier to get a lot of coins on some courses than others.  Since the
courses are chosen by random, there is a certain element of luck when trying to
play through the courses you want to amass as many coins as possible.

1-Up amassing tricks will net you coins if you do them as Gold Mario.  If the
trick involves bouncing endlessly on a Koopa Troopa, you will have to break the
chain after getting around 900 coins or so, then start a new chain.  Otherwise
you will end up getting rid of the Koopa Troopa.

You will get the most out of Gold Blocks if you run around with them on your
head.  Any Coin Block that you can get multiple coins from will turn into a
Gold Block if you get ten or more coins from it.  If such a Coin Block is on
the ground, try ground pounding from above and holding down on the D-Pad or
Circle Pad to get the block to go on your head.

Try getting a course that has the opportunity to get a Gold Flower.  In many
instances, such as World 2-4, a Gold Flower is a possible item from clear
roulette boxes, so you have to time your jump to get the item you want.
However some courses, such as World 2-1, contain a block with a guaranteed Gold
Flower.

If you get a Mega Mushroom while you are Gold Mario, you will get a Gold Flower
as your stored item to be used in the next course.

Finally, try to hit the top of the flagpole at the end of each of the first two
courses.  As mentioned before, if you do so then after the timer bonus is
added, your cumulative coin total will be doubled.  Defeating the boss at the
end of the third course will automatically double your cumulative coin total.

The maximum possible number of coins you can get in a single Coin Rush
challenge is 30,000.  Getting that many coins requires playing through the
right courses and making the most out of every coin gathering opportunity.
