FAQ v. 0.5

Important Note: Info in {curly brackets} is tentative, or incomplete. It marks
guesses on my part that haven't been confirmed yet, in an attempt to at least
help point people at some way to get things done, or in events it might be a
time or situation when I've done the event in question, but actual possible
times might be a lot broader than that.
Anyhow. To start with at least, this is going to be a quick n' dirty FAQ. Since
there is so little info out on this game to start with, and there is so little
in the way of a manual or tutorial, a lot of people seem to be at sea. So this
is my attempt to help with that a bit.
So I'll try to be as accurate as possible, but there will be a lot of info
missing, at least at first, as I make my way back through from the start of the
game and make note of things. So sorry if this isn't as helpful as people would
like!
Search for the letters in brackets beside each section to quickly move to the
spot you want.

-001- Intro [INT]
One day you receive a strange letter through the mail - "Nana is gone, and I
don't know what to do. Please come to Nana's shop, and quickly! The address
is..."
The address listed is for the village where you spent much of your time as a
child, a village holding fond memories for you. You decide to investigate...
This is the story of your life in that friendly little village, running the shop
that your grandmother left behind. The village starts out small, the shop fallen
into disuse. Your job is to restore the shop, expand the village, and just watch
everyone's lives unfold, with your own as an unforgettable link forging the
stories together.
-002- Controls [CTL]
Circle Pad: Move your character. How far you move the stick determines how
quickly the character moves.
Directional Pad: Move around in menus.
A Button: Take an action. Includes talking to people, setting an item onto a
shelf, and investigating things.
B Button: Cancel actions or menu selections. Put away a held item.
X Button: Finalize a sale when you are buying items in a shop. Bring up info on
a highlighted item in your own shop menu. Change the price of an item already
set out for sale. Press on the outdoor map screen to change volume setting or
text speed option.
Y Button: Sort your storage while in your shop and highlighting an item. Toggles
between sorting by type, sorting alphabetically from A-Z, and sorting
alphabetically from Z-A.
R1: Hold down indoors to highlight the area directly in front of your character,
or to move the character without turning (strafing). Can be used to set up
shelves in certain directions, without turning them. In another shop's menu,
press to switch to the shopping cart to remove items you don't want.
L1: Toggle the highlight function on or off in your shop, but without strafing.
In this mode your character will only move strictly along the invisible "grid"
but will not go through doors. Make sure you toggle this mode back off before
trying to go into Nana's House, or outside.
Touchscreen: Used for quick selection in some menus, such as your storage menu,
or for interacting with the map screen outdoors.
-003- The Daily Grind [TDG]
This section gives a rundown of how time passes in the game, and a general sense
of what you can and should do each day.
1) Time Flow [TMF]
Time passes constantly in the game, either indoors or out. The clock changes in
ten-minute increments, every ten real-life seconds. So overall one hour in-game
passes for every real-life minute. There are two exceptions to this.
First, time is stopped when you first wake up in the morning. This gives you as
much time as you need in order to replenish stock that has sold out the previous
day, to change your shop layout, to switch out key items you're selling, etc.
Time only begins passing when you open your shop for the day.
The other exception is during events and cutscenes. This holds true not only for
the automatic cutscenes, but for certain events where you have free movement,
but have a certain task (such as searching for a lost item for someone). Time
still doesn't pass even while you move around during these special events, so
there's no need to rush.
2) Inside Your Shop [INS]
Given that the entire premise of the game revolves around your adoption and
running of your grandmother's shop, it's natural that you'll be spending a lot
of time in here.
a) Nana's House
The back area is where you'll sleep, and check the few information screens that
are available to you. To reach it, enter the door at the back of the shop. From
the outside, you can enter your shop through the left-hand door to go directly
to the back room. There are a few items that you can interact with:
Pochica hovers in the center of the room, and you can speak with it at any
point. This is normally just flavor text however, and perhaps commentary on the
current weather, or how you are doing overall. The exception is when you get the
Rubber Ball, which you can sometimes use to play with Pochica by speaking to it.
To the lower left of the room is your storage. This simply lets you check the
same storage and furnishing items that you can access out on the main floor of
your shop.
The left wall also holds two doors. The bottom one takes you back out to your
shop, while the top one leads outside. When you wake up at 6am you can only go
out to your shop to ready it for opening, but after that you can go between the
outdoors and your back room through this door.
Along the back wall is a calendar. Check this to see which month and day it is,
and the day of the week.
Just to the right of the calendar is your bookshelf. Here you can check four
separate sections:
*The Ledger book gives you asset or ranking informaton. The icons from the top
are:
Assets - Shows your earnings, expenses, and profit for each day, along with
number of items sold that day, number of customers that day, overall types of
items you've had, and pieces of the blue feather you've collected.
Various item rankings - Unknown
Character rankings - Unknown
*The Residents list gives you information on every character in the game (major
or minor), including their favorite items and occupation. The number at the
bottom right shows how many characters out of the 100 possible have moved into
your town thus far. The icons along the left side of the touchscreen let you
filter between all characters, male, female, and other. Any characters who
haven't yet moved in will be marked by "???" in the listings. Note that a few
special characters don't actually show up on the Residents list.
The passwords section of the bookcase is used for granting bonuses for those
playing both the 3DS version of the game, and the iOS game planned for future
release. For now with just this game out, they act as a sort of checklist:
3DS:
Opening Day! - Open from the start
100 Customers - The number of customers who have bought an item at your shop is
over 100!
Road to a Million - Have more than 50,000G.
Beginning Manager - Expand your shop to 6 square by 6 squares.
Manager - Expand your shop to 8 squares by 8 squares.
1000 Customers! - The number of customers who have bought an item at your shop
is over 1,000!
Road to a Million 2 - Have more than 100,000G!
Assistant Manager - Expand your shop to 12 squares by 12 squares!
Head Manager - Expand your shop to 16 squares by 16 squares!
Road to a Million 3 - Have more than 500,000G!
iOS (currently unused):
Assorted Fruits
Milk for a Month
Giant Swordfish
Shiny Gold Veggies
Ocean Gem
The help section simply gives you a slight bit of help on various aspects of the
game, such as placing items on shelves, how to use the controls, etc. Why need
that, when you have this FAQ though, right?
Beside the bookcase is a door in the right-hand wall. The purpose of this door
(if it has one and isn't just for show) is unknown. It seems to be just
decorative.
At the lower right of your room is your nightstand and bed. Face either and
press A, and you have three choices. Change clothes or hair, Save and sleep, or
sleep without saving.
The save options are self-explanatory, while the customization can be unlocked

(Still to come)
b) Main shop area
The main shop floor is where you'll spend possibly a majority of your time in-
game, so you need to know just how to run your shop and what your goals are.
The very first step in restoring this shop is to set it up so that you can in
fact sell things. This is one of the very few places where you'll have a slight
in-game tutorial, but we'll walk through it here anyhow.
First, press the icon at the very top left of your touchscreen, which toggles
between furnishings and your shop storage.
Select the shelf from your furnishings, move to where you would like to set it,
and press A to set it down. Shelves are actually unlimited - buying new ones
only unlocks new styles - so continue to take them out of your furnishings and
setting them down. Set as many as you can, while still leaving room for yourself
and shoppers to get around - shelves can be surrounded by walls or other shelves
on three sides, but leave at least one side free to reach it for stocking or
purchase.
You can also change your shop decor with this menu. Although the icons just show
wallpaper, the flooring also changes. Select a decor item and press A to take it
out, as with other items, and it automatically decorates your shop in the new
style. You'll need to buy new options from the vendor that shows up every day at
2pm though before you can do this.
Now that your store is set up, you need to set things out for sale. Press the
top left icon of the touchscreen again, to toggle it back to your storage.
Highlight an item with the directional pad or by using the stylus on the
touchscreen. You can get info on the item by pressing X, or take it out by
pressing A. With the item in your hand, approach a shelf and press A again to
set it out for sale.
For all items except for key items, you can change the price of an item by
pressing X while standing next to it. Don't set the price too high, or people
will simply refuse to buy it. The default price is 10% above the price you can
buy it for.
If you change your mind about selling an item, just approach its shelf and press
A again to pick it up, and press B to return it to your storage. You can pick up
and move an empty shelf by approaching and pressing A as well, and remove it
from the store entirely by pressing B while you hold it.
Once your shop is stocked, every day you need to open for business by pressing A
by the door leading to the outside, or by pressing A while behind your cash
register. At this point time starts to flow, and customers start to trickle in.
Note that your shop closes automatically at midnight each day, or if you go to
sleep early. You DO NOT close the shop in order to go outside - customers will
still come in and may take items from your shelves, but they won't steal them.
If the customer gets impatient and leaves, they will return the item to your
storage. So your shelves may be bare when you get back, but you'll still have
the items, and can just set them out again.
Once customers come in, they will stand around for a short while, then either
get frustrated because they cannot find an item they like and leave, or they
will move to an item, pick it up, and take it to the register. They'll usually
hang out for around half an hour before they give up, or grab an item.
Characters will stand in line for some time - minor characters usually don't get
impatient for a while (with elderly characters seeming to be even more patient),
while major characters get impatient much more quickly - after around 30 minutes
of waiting or less, they'll leave. If there is a main character in line you
might want to check everyone out quickly, but otherwise try to build up at least
a small queue, since you get bonuses for checking multiple people out in quick
succession:
3-4 people : x1.5
5-9 people : x2
10 people or more : x3
Every character has their own favorite item, and other items that they will buy.
If you can, try to have these on the shelves - since characters wait at least a
short time before picking something up, you can even swap things out on the
shelves quickly when you see them come in. This is especially useful for
stocking tools, since higher-level tools expand other characters' shops, but if
you leave them up for sale all the time, other characters can and will buy them
first.
You can often see icons over your customers' heads as they shop. A "..." shows
that a customer couldn't find something they wanted, and so they're leaving. A
black squiggly line as a customer stands in line means that they're getting
impatient with waiting, and may be getting ready to leave the line without
purchasing their item. An angry red mark means they've gotten fed up with
waiting and are leaving. An exclamation mark means that the customer has found
their favorite item, while flowers over their head after purchase mean that
they've just purchased a favorite {and gotten a better boost to friendship}. A
musical note means they've made a normal purchase.
Aside from your customers, you can also have characters come in for special
cutscenes. These are sometimes unlocked by stocking certain items (usually key
items) in your store, or sometimes just occur automatically as you meet the
other requirements for an event. Check the events section for more details on
each.
One last character that comes in is the merchant, who shows up at 2pm each day.
He will come up to your register like a regular customer, but without picking an
item up first. Talk to him within the hour (he might hang around longer if
you're out of your shop), and he'll open his shop menu for you to purchase
things. Whenever he has key items or wood, you should buy as many of these as
you possibly can - key items are used for events which are important for
developing your town and its story, while wood is used in expansions for your
own store, and can ONLY be purchased from the 2pm vendor. Since his inventory is
random each day, take advantage of the wood whenever you can. You'll need a lot
of it for higher-level expansions.
(Also note that while the vendor doesn't count toward your chain bonus, he
doesn't interrupt a chain if you talk to him in the middle of ringing up other
customers.)
Once the clock reaches midnight, your shop automatically closes. If a customer
is in the shop when it closes, they just vanish after the closing sequence, so
make sure you ring up anyone in line before midnight strikes.
At this point, it's best to go into the back room and go to bed, ready to start
a new day tomorrow.
3) Outside exploration [OUT]
Although it wouldn't work well in the real world, in Hometown Story's village
you can just leave your shop at any time, without worrying about theft or
vandalism. Go out of your shop into the village at large, wander around to talk
to people, and come back at will - your shop will still be open. This can even
work to your advantage, since it allows queues to form up for large bonuses as
you ring up the customers.
You may miss getting to sell items to major characters if you're out and about
(for improving friendship or shop levels or triggering events), which is a
trade-off. But you can't sit in the shop all day, or else you'll miss out on
triggering other events, foraging, and expanding the town. It's best to balance
the two and vary your schedule to try to see everything there is to offer.
Events may trigger just by going to the right section of town at the right time
or possibly once you've reached invisible levels of friendship with the right
villagers, or sometimes by carrying a certain key item with you ask you go.
Since these allow you to increase the size of your town and see the story of the
villagers' lives, they're a major part of the gameplay and you should watch as
many as possible.
Weather also plays a role in your explorations. Characters tend to have
different schedules depending on the weather, with some only even found under
certain conditions. Outdoor workers like fishers and farmers also usually stay
in their shops more often while the weather is bad, making it easier to buy
items from them.
Foraging is done simply by visiting set foraging spots and gathering the items
there, by approaching, pressing the A button, then putting them away with the B
button. Since these are pure profit when you sell them, they're especially
useful starting out, when every bit of gold helps. Foraging spots usually
replenish every two days.
All of which leads us to the next section...
-004- Getting Around [GAR]
To actually go where you want to go it helps of course to simply learn the
village, which exits lead where, and who lives in which sections. But barring
that, these FAQ sections should help you to learn how to use the handy map
feature, and to give a quick list of where things are.
1) Map navigation [MAP]
Use the stylus with the touchscreen in order to see various info on the map,
which you can then use to move around to where you want to be.
The first icon on the top left toggles between the overall map of the village,
and the map of the current section you're in (Shop area, Flower Hill, Beach,
etc.). For moving around within a section you'll want the section map most
times, because the camera moves around in awkward ways, making it very difficult
to tell which direction you're moving in (or which exit you're taking)
otherwise. It also shows icons of any characters in the section, letting you
find and talk to them. The village map likewise comes in handy to see where you
are in relation to other areas you want to visit.
It's even easier though to figure out which way you want to go to get to a
specific section. With the village map open, touch the section you want to visit
with your stylus. At that point it changes back to a section map of the section
you're in, but with a blue arrow pointing to the exit you should take to move
toward the selected section. Keep following the blue arrows through every
section, and you'll quickly get to where you want to be.
(Just note that when a path is previously blocked and opens up, such as between
the Town Entrance and Mountain Square, the arrows still point to the longer
route, as if the route were still blocked.)
Sometimes though you want to find a specific person, and that is where the next
icon comes in. Press the magnifying glass to the left of the map screen, and
three icons appear under it. The first is for male characters, the second for
female characters, and the last is for special characters such as spirits.
Press the corresponding icon, then touch the picture of the character you want
to find. Now an icon shows up on the village map, showing the character's
location. If it is Grayed out, the character is currently inaccessible, often
because they are asleep or otherwise locked in at home. You can then touch the
section they are in to navigate there using the blue arrows, just keep in mind
that if the character moves, the arrows still point to the section they started
in.
You can cancel looking for a specific character by pressing the B button a few
times to back out of that menu. This also happens if you press the B button to
put foraged items away, so you may have to re-open them at that point.
Also note that there is a key item that you can get late in the game which
allows you to teleport immediately between areas. To do so, open the overall
map, then touch the section you'd like to move to with your stylus, and select
"Yes" to move there. You cannot use this ability inside buildings.
2) Locations [LOC]
For the various locations, I've attempted to list items starting from the lower
part of the left screen edge, and going clockwise from there. So exits, houses,
etc. should be listed generally in that order.
For the map sections themselves, I've divvied them up into five rows from top to
bottom, listing the top row from left to right, and moving down from there.
Apologies if this is awkward, but without images it's just difficult to really
describe the maps.
You'll also see extra buildings aside from what's listed here pop up throughout
the game, which you cannot enter or interact with. These act as housing for the
minor characters that move in through the course of the game, and aren't
important.

-005- Characters [CHR]
1) Major Characters [MAJ]
These are the main characters in your village that have important roles during
events, and have names when you speak with them. Try to increase their
friendship {by selling them items, especially favorite items, talking to them
every day, and taking part in their events and answering questions correctly.}
Once you do, you may get to see more about them, and further your relationships.
A few of these characters may even be spouse material: Steve, Shinji and Dexter
are all bachelors that you can woo as a girl, while Anna, Haruka and Mika are
available for the guys. {Going by hearsay thus far, to marry someone you must
see all of their confessions, and collect blue feathers until you see their
proposal (turning down any bachelors/bachelorettes that you don't wish to
marry).}
Shop visits and items that characters are not yet complete - this is a work in
progress. A character only has a chance to stop by the shop during his or her
visiting hours - it's not going to happen every day.
Carl
Mayor of the town, Carl has a loving wife Aisha, and a son Steve who troubles
him. He is obsessed with timepieces and punctuality.
Occupation: Mayor
Home: Mayor's House (Riverside)
Favorite Item: Small Egg
Bought Items: Truffles
Shop Visits: 5pm
Aisha
A wonderfully sweet woman, Aisha is wife to Carl and mother to Steve. She is
bound to a wheelchair ever since a certain incident long ago.
Occupation: Mayor's Wife
Home: Mayor's House (Riverside)
Favorite Item: Cherry Jam
Bought Items: {None}
Shop Visits: {None}
Steve
The son of Mayor Carl, Steve moved to the big city some time back, and has only
just returned to his home village. He still misses some of the big city life,
and looks for ways to bring a touch of it home with him.
Occupation: Mayor's Son
Home: Mayor's House (Riverside)
Favorite Item: Coffee
Bought Items: Breads
Shop Visits: 5pm
Mika
Mika's life revolves around her animal friends, especially the birds who nest in
her hair. She even goes so far as to live in a barn, and eat the same types of
food her precious animals eat.
Occupation: Dairy Farmer
Home: Mika's Barn (Flower Hill)
Favorite Item: Golden Herb
Bought Items: Brushes, Herbs
Shop Visits: 3:30pm
Cling
The twin with the blue bandana, Cling seems slightly more down-to-earth than his
green-topped brother, although that's not saying much. Still, he's a skilled
blacksmith.
Occupation: Blacksmith
Home: Twins' House (Beach)
Favorite Item: A Slice of Pizza
Bought Items: Ores, Tools, Supplies
Shop Visits: 8pm
Clang
The twin wearing a green bandana, Clang is a bit ditzier than his brother. Like
Cling, he's a skilled blacksmith, although he can get a bit... distracted at
times.
Occupation: Blacksmith
Home: Twins' House (Beach)
Favorite Item: A Slice of Pizza
Bought Items: Cooked Meals, Ores, Tools
Shop Visits: 8pm

3) Other Characters [OTC]
These are the characters that don't have a listing in your ledger, most of whom
don't make purchases or visit your store. They still have a role to play in your
village life, however.
Pochica
This spirit first drew you to the village, and acts as your guide and companion
throughout the game.

surprisingly nonchalant reaction to him. He's best friends with Mayor Carl, and

her.

disappearing suddenly. His speed is without equal. He lives somewhere in
Memorial Hill.
Harvest God
Lives in the shrine, but can only be seen once you own the Divine Protection. He
can usually be found in the shrine on rainy days, and sometimes at night.
-006- Shops [SHP]
In order to sell items in your shop, you first need the items themselves. You
can forage a small number of them for pure profit, and are gifted another small
handful during events, but generally you need to buy from the various shops in
the game and sell at a profit to earn your keep.
Items listed under the "Buy" sections are bought outright, while "Requests" are
things that you can request to have made for you, by turning in both money and
specific ingredients. Each higher level still includes the items in levels
before it - they just list new items unlocked at that level.
{Shop listings are still very incomplete, as I play through and unlock each
level gradually, and am still unlocking characters that run them. Times are also
incomplete, and should be taken as an indication of at least some times you can
find the shops open. My apologies.}
*****
2pm Merchant
{Note that the levels in this listing are probably not accurate - I've attempted
to list what the merchant sells at separate levels, but there seems to be some
randomness involved, plus it can be hard to tell what's unlocked at a given
level if it's not offered before the next level unlocks. Take the levels simply
as a rough guide for the moment.}
This merchant arrives in your shop every day at 2pm, making this the easiest
shop to buy from - it comes directly to you at a known time each day. It also
sells most of the key items, and other special items like wood, so make sure
you're in your shop near 2pm each day to make any purchases you need.

-007- Events [EVN]
The events are one of the main draws of Hometown Story, but sadly can be tricky
to trigger in some cases. This section will attempt to give some hints as to
what's available and how to see it, although it'll be a while before it's as
fleshed-out as I'd like. For now, I'm listing them in the general order I've
seen them, or at least the first event in their chain.
The "Requirements" heading shows any special requirements, alongside the normal
ones like entering the location listed, at the time listed. In addition, you may
need certain (hidden) levels of friendship with participants before they will
unlock. You'll also need to see earlier events in a chain before you see the
later ones, naturally.
At least one further requirement for each event (and sometimes for an event
chain on the whole) is to have all of the participants in town - except of
course for the very first introductory cutscenes, marked as (Intro), where the
character arrives for the first time. Characters may show up in the village as
soon as you've first seen them, while in other cases they don't show up in the
Ledger and on the map screens until you've been properly introduced.
The Main Character and Pochica are also included in the various cutscenes,
although they're not listed as participants.
Times are especially unclear at the moment, and may not be accurate, but I've
included some as at least an attempt to point you in the right direction if
you're having trouble triggering an event.
Times listed as "6am (waking)" mean that they trigger as your character wakes up
for the day, while "6am (opening)" play immediately as your character opens the
shop for the day. "During shop hours" can simply trigger at any point while
working, if you've met other requirements. You can see one "6am (waking)" event
and one "6am (opening)" event per day, but multiple "during shop hours" events.
If you're having trouble triggering an event, try entering the location at
various times, in various weathers. Also try increasing friendship with everyone
involved in the event, or the overall chain. Also use the order of events as a
guide - if you haven't seen an earlier event chain in the list, try to view that
in case it's a hidden requirement.
I'm going to attempt to keep spoilers to a minimum, if not non-existent, just
giving a brief synopsis of the basics of what a scene's about. Keep in mind as
well that the titles for the events aren't anything official - they're just
something handy to use as a reference.
One final note: In almost all cases, your character will be in the same spot he
or she triggered the event, at the same time of day, once the cutscenes have
finished. Exceptions will be noted.

-009- End Notes [END]
1) Bugs and Glitches [BUG]
There are a few known glitches effecting the game:
The game will occasionally freeze up completely. This doesn't happen often, and
seems to have something to do with large numbers of customers/a large shop. Any
further causes, or workarounds, are unknown. Make sure to save your game every
night, to at least minimize any damage to one day.
When ringing up customers, you will occasionally have a sale for 0 dollars. This
usually seems to happen at the 8th or 9th customer in a chain. There's not
really a good way to work around this, except perhaps if the bugged customer is
the last in a chain or is buying an especially expensive item, hold off on
ringing them up to see if resetting the chain helps.
