Remington 597
By: TexanTiger Date: October 12, 2012, 3:12 am
---------------------------------------------------------
So I have been keeping an eye on autoloading 22s for quite a few
years for squirrels, varmits, and cheap off season shooting. I
was between a Ruger 10/22 and the Remington 597 when Cabelas put
the 597 scoped combo on sale for 180.00 a while back, and since
I had a $50 Cabelas gift card to burn, I decided to give it a
shot. I went and picked it up and took it to the range the same
day to sight it in. I have to say, with 500 rounds of cheapo
American Eagle 22 rounds down range, I never had a single jam,
which was new for me given the autoloaders I'd shot in the past.
It even cycled Subsonic ammunition perfectly without a hitch,
where most autoloaders will tell you that you must shoot high
velocity ammo for it to function properly. The rifle was
extremely light, weighing in at under 5 pounds, and came scoped
with a 3-9x32mm Remington brand scope. It also comes with both a
3/8" dovetail scope mount and drilled and tapped for a weaver or
picatinny rail. Ergonomically, it was perfect. The stock was a
little wider than the 10/22, giving it a "grown up" feel, and it
felt perfect and stable against my shoulder. The stock is a
little flatter on the bottom of the forearm, lending itself
perfectly to bench shooting. The 597 also features a last shot
hold open feature, which helps when you lose track of how many
rounds you have left in your magazine. The Remington scope was a
cheap-o POS, and I never could get it to stay sighted in. Some
investigation showed that the screws on the front scope ring
were stripped out from the start. If I had been depending on
this scope from the beginning I probably would have been
disappointed, but I knew I was going to mount a Tasco 3-9x32
that I had laying in my closet anyway. The factory scope comes
mounted on the dovetail, and since I prefer having a drilled and
tapped scope, changing it out was an easy decision. Loctite,
rings, and a 1 piece weaver base, and I was good to go again.
The rifle with new scope zeroed easily, and shot some very
impressive groups on it's first outing. The picture below is 10
rounds at 50 yards. Out of the box, some very impressive
accuracy indeed. After adding a sling, I already love this
little rifle. I'd say, if you're looking for a 22 for yourself
of the kids, this is definitely a good one to go with, and for a
good bit less green than the 10/22 route.

Nice. I am going to have to look into this. I get gift cards
from there for work incentives that we meet.

They put out a coupon this week for the unscoped version at
Cabelas for $169.99 I think, cant remember. After buying a scope
anyway, I'm kinda kicking myself for not catching the sale and
buying the iron sighted version, but hindsight is 20/20.
