Chapter 12
Qibli
Qibli looked worriedly at the darkening sky. "Well...it's
probably not a good time to check. We can confirm it with
Carnelian tomorrow. Winter nodded in acknowledgement, and
climbed onto his ice sheet. Bandit hopped off his neck, and
forcefully nudged him towards his sand dune. This cat, so
fixated on making me sleep... Qibli sighed. He relented, and
curled up on the sand. Bandit promptly lept onto his stomach and
snored away. Qibli stayed awake for a little white longer,
thinking. Yesterday, we spent the entire day exploring Mementos.
Then we discovered that Moon had a palace, and managed to get
the keywords to it. We then entered her Palace, but realized we
couldn't get anywhere because she was subconsciously blocking us
off. That was today. Now, Umbli and Turtle aren't here. As a
matter of fact, we didn't see them until we came to sleep last
night as well. They didn't talk to us or ask where we've been.
Qibli felt dread. What would the next day bring them?
~~~
Even before opening his eyes, he knew where he was. The faint
whisper of wind, and the coldness of the stone underneath him
was all that was needed to signal him. Qibli sat up, and faced
the Master. The pale dragon was in his usual pose; sitting
upright behind his wooden desk. His left forearm was propped up
on the desk, and his head rested on his hand.
"Welcome!" The Master said cheerfully. He was in his normal
calm, amused self; happily hinting away at Qibli's demise. The
prison warden, Clerval, watched from the sides of the cage. She
was as silent as ever.
"Your adventure has fully gone underway now. You're holding
up rather well, though that is expected; you're quite the crafty
one." The Master's eyes flickered for a moment, as if he were a
mirage. "However, this is only the beginning. How will you
change your fate? Let's see how it will end up, Trickster."
~~~
Qibli awoke slowly. In the distance, he heard the pleasant
chirping of birdsong. Looks like those two will be tormenting my
dreams for a while. Ugh... He adjusted his eyesight, blinking
his obsidian eyes a couple of times. Carefully, he pushed Bandit
off his back. The puma easily slipped onto the floor. Without
his 'pet' on his back, Qibli stood up. Winter slept peacefully;
his ice blue flank rose slowly, up and down.
Creeping out into the deserted halls, Qibli peered around
cautiously. The consecutive days of Palace infiltration had left
a clear imprint on him; he was adept at slinking around
noiselessly.
The halls were mostly coated with soft shades of
periwinkle. The sun had barely risen; a few, gleaming rays
escaped from behind the mountain. The gentle, golden sunlight
filled the eastern side of the Academy. As the sky turned rose,
Qibli snuck back into his sleeping cave. He was just in time;
Winter was stirring. Patiently, Qibli sat on his sand dune and
waited for his friend.
Winter, elegant as ever, rose up from his bed. He blinked a
couple of times, as his eyes met Qibli's. "Up already?"
"Yup. Been looking around the school." Qibli nudged Bandit,
who woke up with a "mrow". "No one was up. I didn't go all the
way to the infirmary, headed back as soon as the sun was
completely up."
"That will be our first objective then." Winter's spikes
clinked against each other as he stood up. "Let us make haste."
Before Qibli could respond, the Icewing exited the cave.
Some things never change. Qibli sighed, and followed his
friend.
~~~
The corridors were now bustling; the other students were now
awake, and they went to meet with friends. Qibli temporarily
lost sight of Winter, jostled by the crowd. A familiar feeling
of warmth hit his side, and he turned. The dragon that had
collided with him was an unfamiliar Sandwing.
"Oh! Sorry about that!" Qibli called over to her. The
Sandwing craned her head back to look at him. Her face seemed
bored, and so was her reply. "Yeah. It's alright." The Sandwing
turned her head back towards the front, but Qibli caught her
parting glance.
Just before she turned away, her expression turned
thoughtful. Who was that Sandwing? I've never seen her before,
both among the Scorpion Den and the Palace residents. Qibli
contemplated the encounter, deciding to remember that Sandwing's
face. Afterwards, he hurried in the general direction of the
infirmary.
As he expected, Winter was already there. The Icewing
irritably flicked his tail. "What did you do to take so long?"
"Hey, cut me some slack. I was lost in the crowd." Qibli
retorted. As he entered the doorway, he immediately noticed the
new patients.
Umber and Turtle curled up on adjacent beds; they were both
sleeping. Their bodies were covered in nasty bruises. Turtle's
side was bandaged, and a little bit of blood was seeping
through.
"So we were right..." Qibli looked at his fellow clawmates
grimly. Winter was about to reply, when someone hurtled through
the infirmary door.
"THERE YOU ARE!" A Voice bellowed out. A cobalt Seawing
skidded to a stop right in front of them. Qibli recognized her
as Tsunami. Sunny trotted through the door after her boisterous
friend.
"We've been looking for you two!" Sunny spoke up, stopping
next to her friend. "Where have you guys been?"
"U-us? We've been visiting our friends." Qibli motioned to
Carnelian, who was feigning sleep.
"Ok, that's sweet and all, but WHY have you been MISSING
ALL YOUR CLASSES?!" Tsunami yelled out dramatically. Winter
scrunched up his face, and clapped his talons over his ears.
"Visiting her isn't a problem in itself, but you've been
absent from all your classes for the past couple of days." Sunny
continued. "It's a bit too much."
"Ah, sorry." Qibli dipped his head, anxious to end the
awkward situation. Winter mimiced his action, bowing his head a
fraction of an inch.
Sunny sighed, shaking her head. "I hate having to confront
students...just go to your class please." Sunny and Tsunami
turned to go, but Qibli stopped them.
"Actually, there's something else I'd like to ask." Qibli
blurted out. "What happened to...Turtle and Umber?"
Sunny looked at him suspiciously. "How do you not know?
Where were you guys the whole day? If you really stayed with her
the entire day, you should've seen the mayhem of yesterday."
"We slept in early." Winter cut in, saving Qibli the
trouble of making up an excuse. "We're deep sleepers."
"Hmm, alright." Sunny looked dubiously at them, but didn't
argue the point any further.
"So basically, there was an accident in Aviation class
yesterday. Cardinal noticed that only three of the Jade Winglet
showed up in his earlier class. He demanded that Jade Winglet
would attend yesterday's Aviation along with the Gold and Silver
Winglet. Well...I didn't see why not."
"The class they had to skip was my class." Tsunami
grumbled. Sunny decided not to respond to her statement.
"During that class, only Umber, Turtle, and Kinkajou showed
up, once again. I can imagine that Cardinal was quite upset.
However, the class still continued on. And during that class,
Umber and Turtle got hurt. It seems something happened during
the lesson and they tumbled down the mountain. Turtle's side was
cut open by a sharp slab of rock." Finished, Sunny once again
backed out of the cave. "I hope you remember your class. It'll
start in about ten minutes." Tsunami and Sunny exited the cave.
"Whew, good thing we managed to catch you!" One of the
nurses was radiating plumes of yellow. "They asked us that the
next time you came in, we should immediately go to them."
So that's why they came to us. Qibli thought. He shot one
last glance at Turtle and Umber, before crouching next to
Carnelian.
"Yo." The Skywing whispered, furtively glancing at the
nurses that had returned to the room. "So, looks like you can't
use me as an excuse anymore."
"That is correct." Winter sighed. "We'll have to go through
those lessons again."
"Soo...can I stop pretending?" Carnelian restlessly scraped
her claws against the leaves.
"I guess there's no point in that anymore. Wait until the
classes are over before you tell them, so you won't have to
participate today." Qibli responded.
"There is not enough time to talk to Moon right now. Once
you're free to go, Carnelian, meet up with us in the prey center
and we'll go find Moon together." Winter whispered.
"Gotcha. Now go to your classes before they come back to
chew you out some more."
"Alright. See you later." Qibli exited the infirmary. He
felt Bandit shift around his neck. He had almost forgotten about
the cat.
"Classes? Blegh." Bandit groaned. "Can't I skip it?"
"If you leave my side, you're probably gonna get eaten."
Qibli retorted. "Would you rather be bored or dead?"
Carrying the still grumbling Bandit, Qibli followed Winter
to the classroom. Seeing no one outside, he entered. Tsunami was
at the front, already talking with the other students. The other
students consisted of only Moon and Kinkajou.
When she saw them, Tsunami immediately started yelling.
"Hey! I thought we told you to NOT be late! As the headmaster of
the school, I will not tolerate tardiness!" Kinkajou looked at
them with none of her normal cheeriness. She seemed down,
comforted by Moon instead of the other way around. She was in
the same class as Umber and Turtle when the "accident" happened.
Qibli concluded. Outwardly, he apologized to Tsunami.
"Sorry! Lost track of time. Won't happen again." Qibli
prodded Winter. "Right?"
"Yes." Winter replied, swatting Qibli's talon away.
"Sorry."
Tsunami huffed away, walking towards the front of the
classroom. Moon gave them a small smile, before nudging
Kinkajou. The Rainwing murmured a faint greeting.
We should ask her about what happened. Qibli decided,
whispering his suggestion to Winter. The Icewing nodded, before
turning his attention to Tsunami.
"Alright! All of you, listen up. Class is starting!"
Qibli
Class dragged on and on. Qibli didn't dare yawn, for fear
of incurring the wrath of the "headmaster", who was already
rather irritated with them.
Tsunami started out the class with a brief introduction
about the seven known tribes. The class was supposed to let the
other dragons get to know one another better, with each dragon
taking turns to introduce an aspect of themselves. It's already
been a couple days...do we really need to do this?Qibli sighed.
"Hey! Why are you sighing?" The Seawing instructor snapped
at him, almost smacking him with her tail.
"What? Me?" Qibli feigned innocence. "Must've been the
wind."
Shooting him a glare, Tsunami continued her seminar. She
proudly explained their journey to stop the war, how they were
able to achieve the result through collaboration and friendship.
While I'm glad that Thorn was decided as Queen, do we
really need to learn this? Qibli thought, as his eyelids began
to flutter. He saw Moon press her talons to her snout, muffling
a giggle.
~~~
Mercifully, the lesson ended. Channeling all of his pent up
depression, Qibli let out a huge, breezy sigh. "Fooohwaaaa"
"Was that really necessary?" Winter let out a sigh of his
own. "We best hurry. Kinkajou and Moon just left the classroom."
"Alright. Let's ask them to wait in one of the empty
classrooms while we fetch Carnelian." Qibli replied. He prodded
Bandit, who had settled down beside him. The dragon/cat was
curled up on the floor, groaning.
"Leave me...I'm a pillbug. A tiny pillbug..." Bandit
muttered, his voice muffled.
"Welp, Bandit's dead. The lesson must've sucked all the
energy out of him." Qibli draped the despondent cat over his
shoulders, and purposefully exited the classroom. Winter
followed closely, his freezing aura brushing along his scales.
Surprisingly, Carnelian was already there. She was in a casual
conversation with Moon and Kinkajou; not completely open, but
still friendly enough. Kinkajou had brightened up a bit, cheered
up by Carnelian's recovery.
"Hey guys! Over here." Carnelian invited them over, and
they quickly joined in. Carnelian pointed a talon at a nearby
classroom. "Seems empty. Let's continue this over there, shall
we?"
"I'm glad to see that you're better!" Kinkajou starts, plumes of
yellow appearing over her scales. "You were hurt really bad, but
I'm glad to see that you're all better."
"Well, my wing is still broken, that will still take some
time." Carnelian replies, sitting up straight. "Anyway, I heard
that you saw Umber and Turtle getting injured?"
"A-ah, yes." Kinkajou's cheerfulness quickly recedes. The
Rainwing's yellow hues are replaced with blues and grays.
Qibli and Winter remain silent, watching to see how
Carnelian would steer the conversation.
"It must've been horrible." Carnelian soothes her, and Moon
looks on sympathetically. "Don't worry though, it was never your
fault."
Kinkajou tenses, still miserable. Carnelian continues. "I'm
rather curious as to what happened, if you're alright with it
can you tell me what happened exactly? You can take your time."
The Skywing stood up, and nudged Kinkajou to her feet. "We'll
take a stroll. The rest of you, feel free to chat it up."
Carnelian smiles, and leads Kinkajou out of the empty
classroom. Looks like Carnelian's gonna get the information from
Kinkajou, we'll try to get Moon to open up.
~~~
"Uh, so..." Qibli trails off, not sure what to say. The
atmosphere turned awkward.
"What are you doing? C'mon! Get her to open up." Bandit
hisses. Moon is startled, and peers intently at the cat.
"Is that...a puma?" Moon says incredulously.
"Oh! Yes. Wanna see?" Qibli plucked Bandit off his back,
and held him up for Moon to see. He hissed and struggled.
"Put me down you idiot!" Bandit continued to writhe.
"Oh! So..." Moon stares at Bandit, before suddenly grabbing
him in her talons. "...CUUUUUUTE!"
"That's a step in the right direction." Winter whispered in
his ear. "Now that she's let her guard down, she should be
easier to talk with."
True. Qibli thought. Let me think about this a bit. The
reason we couldn't make any progress was because Moon was
'blocking' us. But...if she was blocking us, wouldn't there just
be a giant door? Instead, we just couldn't find anything, no
matter how hard we looked. In that case...would her mind be like
a confusing labyrinth? Unable to navigate through even her own
mind. That means in order to move forward, we have to clear away
the discord she has.
"Hey, Moon?" Qibli started. "Is there anything you
particularly enjoy?"
Still cuddling Bandit, who had submitted to his fate, Moon
replied surprisingly quick. "I prefer silence and serenity. A
place...without having to worry about what others think."
Hmm. Self-conscious then. Maybe if we try to bring her to
an isolated part of the school... "In that case, why don't we
head toward Stonemover's cave? That area of the mountain doesn't
have any other students."
"R-right now?" Moon stammered, dropping Bandit in her
shock.
"Why not? It might help clear your mind." Qibli tried to
somehow convey telepathically that he was just trying to help.
Even though that's preposterous. Dragons can't read minds.
"Alright." Moon said softly, and picked up Bandit again. "I
can tel-- I feel like I can trust you." Moon quickly mumbles
out. Winter nods, and motions for him to lead the way.
~~~
The sunlight turned amber in the afternoon sky, making the
sun-drenched stones appear golden. Qibli, Winter, and Moon
settled down in a cave located near the summit. The noises of
the other students had almost disappeared entirely. Moon seemed
more relaxed than ever, letting her shoulders fall as she looked
at Qibli.
"This...is rather nice." She murmured, sitting down.
"Glad you like it." Qibli sat down, and Winter mimicked his
action.
They were all silent for a moment. Moon stared at her feet,
contemplating something. Qibli waited for her to speak, ready to
help her unravel her problems.
"So...what's all this about?" Moon said suddenly.
"Huh? What're you talking about?" Qibli replied, suddenly
nervous.
Moon looked like she was about to say something, but
decided not to. Her mouth was set in some kind of grimace, and
she looked up at Qibli. "Can you...really help me?"
"Y-yeah!" Qibli stammered. Where's she going with this?
Moon takes a deep breath. "...Steal my heart. I'll let you
in."
Qibli could swear his heart stopped beating.
