(This is an experimental fanfic I'm going to be sporadically
updating.)
CHAPTER ONE
Shorebird stared at the small figurine of the storm petrel in
her talon, eyes blank. One wing was broken off, thrown against
the wall in rage and loss. Shorebird regretted that now.
It was the only thing she had left of her mother.
Taking a shuddering breath, Shorebird clutched the wooden bird
to her chest, waves of grief crashing over her. Come back, mom.
Please. I miss you. It was futile. Everything was.
Seabreeze was gone, and there was nothing Shorebird could do
about it.

Seashell flew and flew and flew until she had left behind the
clouds of pain following her.
She tried to remember her mother alive and happy. She could
almost see Seabreeze flying in the sunset, laughing, her
shimmering pale blue-pink scales orange in the dimming light.
But Seashell's mother wasn't there. She would never be again.
Seashell dived, closing her eyes tight, almost wanting to break
her neck against the rocks like the storm had done to Seabreeze.
She pulled up at the last moment, spiralling back into the air.
Seashell was too cowardly-- she always had been.
Tears welling in her eyes, Seashell kept flying.
