Visual Aids

So I was curious about CCTV's and portable magnifiers, as
someone just posted a link to one. I thought, hey, cool, I
actually really need one of those for shopping because for the
life of me, all the prices and labels are too small for me. And
not just for shopping--there's a ton of things I can't see, even
with contacts on. Lots of times I have to take off my contacts
or glasses and put it up to my eye and let my nearsightedness do
it's thing. So a magnifier would be great.
And then I looked at the prices. Wow. I found it really
disheartening. I wasn't expecting it to be beyond $1,000 for
something with apparently only a 4 hour battery life. My tablet
gets 10 hours and was only $300.
Anyway, what are your experiences with visual aids? What aids
are out there? Are there aids for seeing farther too? I'm just
trying to gauge what's out there.

I use a glass dome magnifier that I got from my local blind
school. I went to public school though and they paid for it so
I didn't have to, which was awesome! I've been using it for 8 or
9 years and its super helpful and I carry it around in my
backpack; it wouldn't fit in a pocket but it would easily fit in
a purse. I don't know where you could find one but if you
searched around online something similar might pop up. I
remember it being a reasonable price.
