My name is Faith. I am 27 years old, and I was born visually
impaired. My eyes didn't develop all the way, I had severe
nearsightedness, and I had to wear strap-on glasses when I was a
baby. I had 2 surgeries. I also had a lazy eye, which my
parents tried to correct, but combined with my dislike of
wearing patches, doing exercises, and unbalanced vision...I
eventually acquiesced to the idea that I was right eye dominant
and would forever have
what I like to call... googily eyes.
I hated my googily eyes and poor vision. Still do at times.
But I came to accept it and realize that I am still wonderful,
even with a -25 prescription or needing to clarify who I am
looking at. If other people are uncomfortable with it, that's
not on me.
I also became grateful for contacts. But I never stopped being
grateful for the visual abilities I have.
There are people worse off and grinning and bearing it.
If you found this site, you can probably relate in some manner.
I am amazed at what I can Google nowadays. You can find
EVERYTHING. But I didn't find many
places where I could find support for my day-to-day visual
impairment.
So that's where the idea for this forum came to be. I've had
the urge to create it for a LONG
time, but after my dog ate my $500+ glasses tonight & I was
livid, I really felt it was time for my
dream to become a reality.
I want this place to be for people affected by visual
impairment, directly or indirectly.
There have been so many times in my life where I just wanted ONE
person around me that
understands what I'm going through.
I also think that visual impairment, as a disability, still gets
put down by the media and society, and
I want a place that advocates for change or inspires others to
stand up to the negativity.
Visual impairment does not define me. I am much more than this.
But I am also
part of this large community of folks affected by it, and for
once, I'd like a safe and comfortable
place for us to all gather.
Please, share your stories, frustrations, resources, whatever
you'd like.
You are not alone.
Also:
...I know, I know, it's pretty bare.
As with all communities just starting out, I am going to need
your help getting the word out. It looks sparse right now, but
I hope you can all envision (no pun intended) what this forum
could become if it is nurtured and supported and active. This
forum will not work without a community because its intention is
to be a place FOR a community.
PLEASE spread the word.
I will do my part to get people here, but I still need help. I
am a grad student after all, and working on this forum is purely
out of love.
If you know ANYTHING about advertising or getting the right
traffic to a website, please let me know. It also has to be
free (for now). In an ideal world, this will have its own
domain and an engaged community.
Please try to see this as it could be, not as it is right now.
If this idea is even remotely of interest to you, please JOIN
and please REFER OTHERS. I also appreciate feedback and advice.
And encouraging words too, who am I kidding.
Thanks for understanding. :-)
HAPPY POSTING!! (Really, don't be shy--please post!)

Since this is an open community, I thought I'd share a bit about
myself so I am not just some otherworldly figure or something.
To show I am human.
I'm Faith, 27, and I live in San Francisco, California. I am a
graduate student studying to get my PhD in clinical psychology
(3 more years!). I love writing and was originally an English
major. So, naturally, a support forum is up my ally.
I am a huge Italo-phile and speak some Italian (ma ho bisogno di
practicare il mio italiano).
There is so much more but I'll add more later :-)
