| Saiga 12...Russian Hammer. Big Time. | |
| By: Shotgun Bill Date: July 11, 2012, 3:09 pm | |
| --------------------------------------------------------- | |
| Saiga is quickly becoming the shotgun of choice for three | |
| gunners, sportsmen, even survivalists and general shooters. And | |
| small wonder. | |
| The Saiga is made in the same factory, in Russia, as were the | |
| original AK47's. Effectively what you have is a 12 guage AK47. | |
| The gun however, due to import restrictions on 'assault' | |
| weapons, must enter this country in sports mode, that is with a | |
| lightweight poly stock (no pistol grip here), and 2 magazines | |
| restricted to 5 rounds each. The trigger group has been altered | |
| as well... | |
| But not to worry. There is an entire, huge industry in this | |
| country, dedicated to converting these shotguns into high | |
| capacity, pistol gripped, fully tactical weapons. For those with | |
| a modicum of manual dexterity, lots of retailers sell all the | |
| needed components to make the conversion themselves. With those | |
| equipped with a minimun of hand or bench tools, the conversion | |
| process can take as little as an hour...or as long as required | |
| by ineptitude or dullness of with. The cost of the parts needed | |
| to do this conversion can run as little a 100-150 dollars, or a | |
| good deal more, depending upon options and so forth. | |
| I have two Saiga 12's. One is converted, the other remains | |
| pagan. Both however have had the internals (bolt rails, feed | |
| ramp, bolt carrier, bolt, trigger and so forth), lightly | |
| reprofiled, but heavily polished and massaged as well, and in | |
| fact, both will shoot anything put in them, from light low brass | |
| #8's to three inch slugs, to 00 buck and whatever else you might | |
| put in them. | |
| And do it twenty times, as quickly as you can pull the trigger. | |
| For yes, I have a couple of 20 round drums (of course, I never | |
| use anything but the five round magazine in the pagan Saiga, as | |
| it is unconverted). It is absurdly easy to destroy old | |
| outbuildings, toilets, garages, castles, barrels, automobiles | |
| and other suchlike, with 20 rounds whatever meets the need at | |
| the time. The thing that isn't easy, is to keep from walking | |
| backwards from the recoil of 20 super-fast released 12 guage | |
| shells. | |
| Tactical accessories are easily added, from rails on up. So that | |
| a person can use red dots, holos, scopes, whatever. I leave my | |
| shotguns (even those of other brands) open sighted. I mean, | |
| after all, it's a bloomin' shotgun, right? | |
| I do though, add lights to any and all of my home or | |
| self-defense oriented weapons. | |
| If you haven't had the fun of emptying a 20 round drum (or 12 | |
| round magazine) and watching pure destruction come about, seek a | |
| Saiga owning friend and implore him, beg him if need be, for the | |
| opportunity. | |
| For more, just google Saiga 12, or AK47 shotgun...they'll lead | |
| you on to lead slinging debauchery, for which no apology will be | |
| forthcoming...guaranteed. | |

| Not that sounds like my kind of shotgun. I would love to | |
| squeeze of 20 rounds and just a few seconds to see what it is | |
| like. Do you have any pics of the two guns? | |

| Hey Yote; | |
| Yeah, it's fun, in fact, maybe too much fun. For at 20 rounds a | |
| go, you eat up ammo pretty doggoned fast. The Saiga is one of | |
| the several reasons I reload 12 guage... | |
| But I've learned to look upon it like some folks view fine wine, | |
| or vacation...that is, something to be looked forward to, | |
| something that is always an extraordinary (at least a little bit | |
| extraordinary) experience, to be savored when you do it, and | |
| remembered fondly thereafter, and definitely not on a daily | |
| basis. | |
| If you're ever in western Kentucky or Tennessee, let's get | |
| together and do some shootin'. I've got my own range, lots of | |
| empty cartridge and shotgun shells to walk around one, and a | |
| fair collection of guns to do it with. | |
| Later! | |

| I would love to get together and shoot one day. I am in KY | |
| myself....near Bowling Green. If you know anyone who has 9MM or | |
| 22-250 brass give me a shout....I would like to purchase some. | |
