Excalibur Crossbows
By: Bwana J Date: April 15, 2012, 7:35 am

When I was just a little guy my whole family would shoot bows on
Saturday afternoons, even Mom. It was a nice way to spend
quality time together. I miss those days, Mom and Dad are gone
but my love of archery is still there. I started hunting with a
recurve and shot my first rabbit and pheasant with it. I didn't
take my first deer until I made the change to a Compound. I did
manage to take a couple before some shoulder problems caused me
to have to give up shooting my bow. Many years later I decided
to get back in the game by going to a crossbow. I picked up a
used Horton Dakota but it wasn't what I was really looking for
so I gave it to my Brother after he tore his shoulder up. He
managed to kill a nice buck with it and I kept looking for a new
bow. I saw an add on TV about a new crossbow company and I
started checking them out. Excalibur manufactures a recurve
instead of compound crossbow thats totally bulletproof, very
well made and fast. I purchased the Vortex, it's a 200 lb draw
that shoots over 300 fps. I could not believe how accurate this
bow shoots. At 40 yrds I can shoot a 1 inch group with it, I
learned very quickly not to shoot more than one arrow at each
bullseye or I'd tear up my arrows. I can't wait for this fall to
get back into the woods with it. Ohio has a long bow season
running from October thru Febuary and I intend to be out there
trying to put some venison in the freezer. Love them
backstraps..... :)
Any of you guys hunt with Bows or Crosbows and what do you use??

That's a great story about how your mom and dad would bow hunt
together. I haven't shot my bow in years. I still have the old
Jennings Carbon Extreme. It has an overdraw which allows me to
shoot a 27 inch arrow. My draw length is 31 inches....this
drastically increases the FPS. As for as crossbows goes....I
have shot a few which friends have, but never owned one. They
are sweet indeed. I have read some reviews on the
Excalibur....all are very positive. It would be great if you
could upload some pics of that beast.

I'll get some pictures of it and see if I can upload them. Might
take some time, haven't tried that yet.

I used to work in an archery shop many moons ago. The recurve
crossbows were always blistering fast. Alot faster than the
compound version.

I agree....I used to shoot a recurve version and it would smoke.

After I saw the Excalibur add on TV, I did some research on
them. Bought mine about a week later. Haven't read one bad
review on them yet. Watched a guy hunting Elephants with one.
Shot the Bull right behind the shoulder, bolt disappeared
completely. Sure didn't take long to put him down. Can't wait
for Fall. Probably won't find any Elephants but Might find a
deer or two. :)

The great thing about a compound crossbow is it can generate
lots of speed and foot pounds with very short limbs with the
cams available today.

Short limbs would be nice, my Excalibur limbs are pretty long
but with the speed and accuracy it has I don't mind them being a
wee bit long.

I hear ya.....a small sacrifice to make for speed and
accuracy....which translates in to more humane kills.
