Smoke and Mirrors
By: Nightingale Date: October 8, 2016, 8:42 pm

"♪I'll be a thorn in your side, 'til you die.♪"
A young pony's voice carried out over the crisp morning air,
resonating from a filly who'd perched herself atop the jungle
gym on a playground, settled on her back as she stared up at the
slowly brightening sky. A hoof held up in the air and traced
slow patterns in it, her horn aglow with a green aura. A
silvery, shimmering light, looking almost akin to a comet and
its starry trail, followed the filly's hoof along in the air,
little stars shooting off from the comet now and then before
exploding into tons of tiny little dots--galaxies, perhaps--only
to slow twinkle away once more.
"♪I'll be a thorn in your side, for always.♪"
It was often that the filly wandered out like she had. She took
any excuse, any chance, to get away from the orphanage that
sheltered her--any chance to practice the illusions she
cherished so dearly. None of the matrons knew she was here, but
she liked it like that. She escaped the morning chores waiting
for her, and it was entirely likely she'd remain away from the
place for the rest of the day, only returning when she was ready
to sleep. Sneaking back in was a cinch, too... The filly smiled,
her expression a smug, amused one. These illusions had been the
best thing to happen to her in her whole life. At the cost of
having to practice every single day, they'd given her a great,
useful boon. They were fun, pretty, and turned many, many heads
her way.
"♪If we sink, we lift our love...♪"
A long, azure dragon whose scales were covered with rime flew in
an interception course with the comet, only to swallow it up
whole. The comet, now a glowing orb from within the icy serpent,
moved further and further into the beast's stomach... before it,
and the creature it set inside, burst into thousands of
twinkling, rainbow-colored lights, looking almost like a
firework had exploded above the filly. The lights slowly
trickled down, leaving tiny, multi-colored streams of light
behind them that slowly faded, until the display was no more,
and all that was left above her was a star-tipped wand, with a
trail of stars behind it--the very same of the cutie mark on the
flank of her idol, Trixie.
"♪We are; let me stop for a second. Held heart, only beats
in the evening. Low tide, watching for flight...♪"

Trixie awakens to the chirping of birds and the morning light
breaching her wagon home. She stands, allowing her hat which she
had still been wearing to slide off her head. She straightens
her cape and levitates a brush to take care of her hair.
Reminiscing on the previous night, a show in Canterlot, her
stories grand as ever, yet she felt lacking in her light
displays. The images which she used to aide her storytelling
were still static and lifeless. Of course her magic fireworks
were still the best in Equestria, but holding those lights in
the air to make an image was a whole higher level.
She fits her hat back on as her ear catches a song being sung in
the distance. She wondered if others would join in and the music
would infect all the residents like is sometimes prone to
happen. Though it was a bit early for such a thing, it would be
rude to deprive a good musical number of her presence.
Ready for the day, Trixie closes up her wagon and heads toward
the singing, but as she gets closer it becomes clear there would
be nopony joining in. She finds herself on a playground, looking
up at the image of her own cutie mark in the sky, then down to
the only one who could've created it.
She was stunned at first, this filly must be a fan of hers yet
her magic is greater even at a glance. She took a deep breath
and cleared her throat to get the filly's attention, "Did you
have need of The Great and Powerful Trixie?"

The wand twirled once in the air before flicking upwards,
causing the trail of stars surrounding its handle to soar above
the wand before exploding into the fireworks she'd seen Trixie
use during the mare's first performance in Ponyville. Not as
grand, perhaps, but the heart was still there. As the fireworks
faded back into nothingness, the filly's arm tucked in behind
her head, keeping it propped up as she watched some of the
swaying boughs of trees overhead, starting to lose herself
momentarily in her thoughts...
Then jumped at a foreign voice beneath her. Her eyes shot open
wide in recognition and she quickly scrambled onto her hooves so
she could look down at who had spoken--to, indeed, find the only
and only, the Great and Powerful Trixie standing there. The
filly could only stare in shock for a few moments, before she
abruptly began giggling as she eagerly clambered down onto the
ground and over to the mare. "Ohmigoshohmigoshohmigosh! It's
really you!!" she chirped excitedly, near bouncing in place.
"I've always wanted to meet the Great and Powerful Trixie! I'm,
like, your super biggest fan! I'm Nightingale!!" she said,
barely able to contain herself as her gaze swept over the mare's
hat and cloak. "Whooooaaa... You're even more awesome up close!
Ohmigosh... What do I say? Um... Um..." She pranced a bit in
place, trying to work her mind in overtime. "Um... Hi! Welcome
to Ponyville!! Are you gonna do another show?!"

Trixie chuckles at the filly's enthusiasm, knowing two colts who
might argue on that 'biggest fan' point. Trixie does have plans
for a small show, however a better idea comes to her mind. "How
about a personal show, just for Trixie's little fan." Trixie
removes her cape, pulling it in front of herself, whilst pulling
her trusty deck of cards from a pocket in her hat, then laying
the cape out inbetween her and Nightingale. She removes the gem
from the cape and places it in the center.
Trixie fans out the cards over the gem. "Pick a card, Trixie
won't look." Trixie tilts her head and looks down as a thought
occurs to her, is the filly a fan of her tricks? or is it the
stories and lights? She hopes it's all of the above.

Nightingale's mouth curved into an 'o' as that cape around the
mare was removed and set on the ground. A hoof reached out so
she could slowly run it along the edge of the fabric, ears
perked in obvious excitement. "A show just for me~? That'd be
amazing, Trixie!" Her hoof never wandered too far, not wanting
to make a bad impression for her biggest idol. "Ooh, a card.
Mmmmm, I'll taaaake... This one!" she said, pulling a card free
from the deck and peeking at it. "Mmkay! Card chosen!"

Through the corner of her eye Trixie looks at the reflection of
the card being chosen off the gem below the deck, the four of
spades. She smirks, raising her head to look at the filly,
"Alright, so long as it isn't the four of spades the trick
should work." Trixie keeps the deck fanned out, ready for the
filly to return the card.

Oblivious for the moment of the card's reflection in the gem,
Nightingale glanced up at Trixie at her words. Four of spades.
That was what she had. Not wanting to inconvenience her idol,
the filly just grinned wide, nodding a bit. "Mmkay! It's not a
four of spades, so we're good!" Behind the card, which had been
turned up so the back was facing Trixie, Nightingale had cast an
illusion on the card, changing the facing of it so that it no
longer displayed the four of spades--but instead the seven of
diamonds. The spell was masked, thanks to the already green aura
around her horn from her having levitated the card in the air.

Trixie is momentarily stunned at the filly's answer, it would be
terrible form to call her out, yet Trixie knew the four of
spades had been taken.
Doubt creeps into her mind, pondering whether she may have seen
wrong. "Uh... okay, just slide the card back in now." Trixie
puts her head into the same position as before. If it really
isn't the four of spades she'd have to think of something else
on the fly.

Oh.
She'd not stopped to think of the card being put back into the
deck.
Nightingale's mouth scrunched a bit, alongside her nose, mind
trying to work quickly on how she could keep the illusion going
while Trixie did her trick. The only solution... was to just
keep trying her best. A rock levitated in the air thanks to the
filly's magic, as the card she had returned to Trixie's deck.
Her mouth stayed scrunched as she stared hard at it, almost as
if concentrating. However, if Trixie shuffled the cards at all,
it was likely she'd lose the card she pulled first, resulting in
the illusion being broken and the four of spades returning to
its original state--and a different card becoming the seven of
diamonds.

Trixie is shocked to see the new card being put into the deck,
not only that, but in her fanned out cards she could also see
another seven of diamonds already and no four of spades to be
found. Trixie remembers the position of the two sevens and
closes the deck, she puts a hoof on each side of the deck and
begins to shuffle them with her magic, sneaking the two sevens
out behind one hoof. Turning them towards herself to confirm
them, whilst still shuffling. However, having broken the filly's
line of sight, the four of spades had returned.
She puts the two cards back to back and sets the deck down.
Showing the filly the seven of diamonds, "Was this your card?"
Then without waiting for an answer she flips it to the four of
spades, "Or this?"
