Noctrals (A Headcannon)
By: Ebony Coldsteel Date: July 28, 2016, 5:45 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
Hundreds of years before the great migration, as the three
tribes festered upon their differences, something strange
happened. As one morning arose over the pegasi tribe's main
settlement, a celestial object shot out from the far side of the
waning moon. With a body the color of the night and a sparkling
tail of purple and blue, it was named The Dark Comet. With their
home in the clouds the pegasi were privy to something that the
other tribes weren't; the comet arching downward to the horizon,
a sign of its descent into a faraway land. With their best
astronomers, cartographers, and meteorologists, they pinpointed
the direction and general distance where this heavenly body
could be found. When asked about the whereabouts of the comet
from the other tribes, the pegasi lied, intent on keeping its
potential to themselves. In secrecy they formed a sizable
expeditionary force to find The Dark Comet and bring it back
home.
With a cloud a fifth of the size of the whole settlement, the
expedition was underway. Whilst the more notable members of the
group were the astronomers and researchers, most were a mix of
occupations. Guards, farmers, and outright adventure seekers
joined in to discover the celestial object and make history.
Over half a year later, they find themselves in the south east
region of Equestria, the Badlands. After all of the arduous
work, the expedition found the crater where The Dark Comet fell.
Right in the center it sat, a perfect sphere so dark, it was
mistaken for a hole in the ground. A meter in diameter, the
stone object was scrawled with glowing symbols along its
surface, another mystery that needed to be solved. But as
research began, conflict arose with the arrival of a nearby clan
of dragons migrating from their homeland. Also catching sight of
the meteor, the dragons and pegasi fought for its possession. A
costly battle that drove the pegasi off their clouds and into
the ground below.
In a desperate gambit, the scholars deploy what little they
translated from the orb. It suddenly begins to spin at
accelerating speeds. Suddenly, a storm of shadows erupts from
the fallen object and surrounds the entire land in darkness. As
the sun rose, the expeditioners awoke to a startling sight. The
dragons were dead, horribly disembodied across the floor; only
one was missing. As for the pegasi, they found themselves
changed in ways they've never imagined. Tufted ears, fangs, and
eyes like serpents that can see through the cover of night as if
it were the day. They had become nocturnal creatures that had
lost their affinity to the weather. Unable to reform the clouds,
they couldn't travel back; most were too afraid to begin with.
Instead, they choose to stay and become a settlement, inheriting
the name Noctral. The pegasi back home would assume the
expedition a failure, and is recordings lost to the ages.
In the following centuries, they adapted to their new
environment and condition. Maintaining the pegasi tradition of
combat prowess, they channeled their passion through hunting,
trapping, and striking without warning under the cloak of
darkness. Remaining hidden from even the pegasi tribe, the
noctrals formed an everlasting connection with the night. It
wasn't until the chaotic reign of Discord that they would
emerge. What would draw them out of seclusion? The avatar of the
moon and stars, Princess Luna. Once they had discovered someone
fighting for the night, the noctrals appeared in legion,
swearing fealty only to Luna. Thus, the Lunar Guard was formed.
More history will be added soon.

A note on Noctral genomes:
Guys, gals, and ponies, it's science time!~
Today, we'll be looking at the effects of cross-breeding
Noctrals with other races using "genome mapping", which is
something y'all might have learned once upon a time in school.
This might sound strange at first, but genomes can be
scientifically applied to ponies, too. Yes, really. And yes,
this is what my life has come to: mapping out genomes for ponies
coughnerdcough. After sending most of this information to
Foxtrot, he requested that I put it here. I'll try to keep it as
simple as possible, and for clarification purposes, I will only
visit what directly applies to Noctrals as mixing in other
factors like carriers and sex-linked genes can get confusing
very quickly. However, if enough interest is generated, I might
map those out, too.
DISCLAIMER: This is by no means fact as the presence of magic
could invalidate many things. And, of course, this is a cartoon
full of pastel-colored miniature horses.
Quick Stats
Earth Ponies: DD (Dominate/Dominate)
Pegasi Ponies: Dr (Dominate/Recessive)
Noctral Ponies: D*r* (Dominate/Recessive) *
Unicorn Ponies: rr (Recessive/Recessive)
* Noctrals, by nature, are "copies" of Pegasi. Even though they
are altered by magic, for this example, they will hold the same
Dominate/Recessive trait as Pegasi. However, Noctral traits will
be specific to their race, differentiating them from Pegasi,
even though their traits are exactly the same.
Breakdown
Earth Ponies: Perhaps the most numerous of all ponies (dominate
race, perhaps?), so I've assigned them the "strongest" genome of
DD (Dominate/Dominate). Crossing a Noctral (D*r*) with an Earth
(DD) would yield only Earth ponies.
If the result is (DD), it's an Earth.
If the result is (D*D), it's an Earth, but with very little
change. Perhaps ear tufts.
Pegasi Ponies: Being the "base" genome for Noctrals, crossing a
Pegasi (Dr) with a Noctral (D*r*) would yield a little bit of
change, depending on who's Dominate gene surfaces.
If the result is (Dr), it's a Pegasi.
If the result is (Dr*), it's also a Pegasi, but with subtle
changes, like tufts on their ears, or perhaps even fangs.
If the result is (D*r*), it's a Noctral.
If the result is (D*r), it's also a Noctral, but also with
subtle changes. Since most Noctrals are somewhere on the
grayscale spectrum, this could possibly be a way Noctrals pick
up more vibrant hues for their mane/tail/coat.
Unicorn Ponies: Being the "gifted" race, I've assigned them the
more elusive rr (Recessive/Recessive). Since Noctrals have that
Dominant gene, most yields would produce a Noctral. However...
If the result is (D*r*), it's a Noctral.
If the result is (D*r), it's a Noctral, but with that Unicorn
recessive trait, they might retain their ability to magically
control weather like Pegasi do.
If the result is (rr*), it's a Unicorn, but with those really
elusive double recessives showing up, they could possibly have
Noctral features, like eyes/ears/fangs. In addition, perhaps a
different style horn, which is how you get things like this.
https://derpibooru.org/798639?scope=scpeb8947d1fd23f372335e77fb032c169664510ff0…
/>It could be possible to give them bat wings, too, but this wou
ld
have to be exceptionally rare as the result would be an Alicorn
hybrid
https://derpiboo.ru/480512?scope=scped90bf5ff37df85013b749e0e984ab04b10fec564<br
/>and could possibly be very well frowned upon.
And there you have it. Genomes in a nutshell. If we were to
include more factors like carriers (sub-dominant and
sub-recessive genes that are carried with normal dominant
genes), you could generate even more combinations (like two
Earth Ponies producing a Pegasus and a Unicorn). But that's for
another time.
I hope this all made sense, and thanks for reading!~
