Pathfinder/Ponyfinder Test Run: Road to War
By: Shadow Date: July 24, 2016, 7:37 am
---------------------------------------------------------
If we don't end war, war will end us. - H.G.
Wells
I have lived for longer than many ponies realize. I have
knowledge of every hidden secret in Equestria and beyond. But
something that many don't know, is that I know of stories. Great
stories, both good and bad, tales of adventures, and tales of
war. This is a story of one such war, and how it all started, in
a faraway land...
This story starts in a land far, far away from
Equestria, where tension and anger towards others is the norm,
unlike Equestria. This story starts in the land of Cermatine, a
large continent surrounded by beautiful coasts, filled with
fields, mountains, forests, and thriving civilization. Alas,
that is the only beauty to be found in Cermatine, for the land
has been afflicted by tensions between the two prominent
nations. On one side, the nation of Ronan. One the other, the
nation of Shinoba. Over time, tensions have slowly risen between
the two, pulling every pony from all walks of life in Cermatine
into their conflict. Smaller nations slowly began to lose their
neutrality, taking sides. Only one neutral nation remains, the
coastal nation of Cykrensia.
But enough with depressing backstories and history, I'm
quite sure that all want to hear about where it all started.
This story starts in the small town of Vescha, in a pub known as
the Green Dragon. Our 'heroes' all met in this pub, some knowing
each other, others meeting each other for the first time. But
tonight, in the Green Dragon is where everything
begins...
FOR ALL: At this time, the Green Dragon is filled with patrons.
Patrons are at various tables and booths, drinking after a long
day, and generally having a good time.
On the stage, there are two dancers performing, and behind them
is a long rug on the middle of the stage, which can be used for
sparring matches. Although you can't see it, you can hear
musicians playing away, the sound of music filling the air.
FOR EMBER/THYME: Ember is currently positioned at a table close
to the bar, where there are a few patrons ordering more drinks
there. From where Ember is sitting, you have full view of the
stage, as well as full view on the corner booths on the left of
the stage. In the booths, there are two hooded ponies sitting
and talking to each other. You also have a view of the door, and
the three new ponies that just entered.
FOR IRON, HEX/FAUST and CLAIR/PLO: After a long day in Vescha,
the three of you make your way to the Green Dragon pub. You all
heard that this was the only place in town that sells drinks,
much like a tavern would. As you enter the building, you are
able to see the bar, but nothing further to the left until you
make your way past the booth. On the right, you have view of the
stage and the tables in front of it. Towards the bar, you notice
an individual that looks different from the other ponies in the
pub, sitting at a table watching the stage. Directly on your
right, you see a table of earth ponies, eating, drinking and
talking to each other. A nearby female, earth pony waitress
approaches the three of you, saying "Welcome to the Green
Dragon, the best drinks in Vescha. How can I help you tonight?"
((Alright, how this will work is that the four of you will just
post in regular order, as if you were going into any other
thread, and that will be the posting order until we enter
combat, where your posting order is determined by your
initiative rolls. We'll get to that later. For now, I'll let you
guys spend a few rounds of spending time in the bar, interacting
with each other. If you want to perform a check/action of some
kind, be sure to mention it in your post, as well as inform me
in the Discord chat, and if necessary, make the roll using
BooBot's dice roll command. For example, if you wanted to check
a suspicious object, you post that your character is moving to
check to object, and then make the roll in the discord chat. I
will then make a response to your action in the next DM post. As
this is a test run, we'll sort things out as we go on. Good
luck!))
EDIT: Floor map of the pub in attatchments below. Each square is
2 ft. by 2 ft.. The entire pub is 86 ft. x 58 ft.. The filled
circles are the player characters. Orange for Ember, green for
Hex, blood orange for Iron, and light grey of Clair. unfilled
circles are NPC's controlled by me. NPC's with the green dots
are waitresses, bartenders etc. and ones without are regular
patrons.

Clair gives a smile in the direction of the waitress who
addressed the group. He's clad in a nondescript robe, the kind
often worn by those of a scholarly persuasion, colored in muted
browns with muted violet accents. His coat, mostly visibly by
his face, is a neutral grey crowned with a mane of snow white.
The only things that might draw attention to him are the dull
crystal dangling from a necklace around his neck and the plain
white mask adorning the upper half of his face, covering his
eyes and ending just under his horn.
"Hello," he says with a nod. "I'll begin with a seat, please,
and a half-diluted hot cider. And assistance getting there
would be appreciated, I'm afraid my vision is...exactly what
it's always been," he jokes, the corners of his mouth turning up
more.

Hex used his green hoof to brush the curly dark green mane out
of his bright green eyes. In case that's too much green, his
clothing consists of a light tannish vest and breeches. "Just a
water for me. Too hard to get stains out of this stuff." He
takes a quick glance around the room. "I think somewhere near
the back should be fine, yes?"

Iron looked over the room, seemingly assessing everypony, noting
that there was at least one that seemed different to the usual
clients that filled the place. Regardless, once satisfied, he
turned back to address the waitress, "a table for the three of
us would be appreciated," he answered with a warm smile, "and
I'll see to an ale myself,"

FOR ALL: As the trio take their seats, the dancers on the stage
finish their song and dance, the music finishing. A round of
applause fills the bar from watching patrons. Soon one of the
dancers speaks up, her serene voice filling the air for
everypony to hear. "Thank you, thank you all! Now, if anyone is
interested, we have our sparring matches that will commence
shortly! Its 10 GP to enter, winner takes the pot! We will also
be taking bets shortly. If you wish to enter, approach the
either of us, and pay up front, thank you!" she says, a loud
cheer going up through the pub, several patrons beginning to
make their way to the front. Soon after, waitresses started
going around, collecting bets.
FOR EMBER/THYME: As you sit at the table, you notice that the
two hooded figures notice you looking at them, as such, they
reposition so that they are sitting closer to each other, and
there is some movement. Before you can do anything, a waitress
approaches you, saying "Hi, would you like another drink, or
perhaps make a bet?" she asks cheerfully.
((If you want to try and see what the two ponies are like/what
they are doing, you can roll a perception check))
FOR IRON, and CLAIR/PLO: You notice that a large group from the
back corner start making their way towards the stage. The large
earth pony in the middle muttering something to his entourage of
male and female earth ponies and pegasi before they all start
laughing and passing you, not noticing your trio. The waitress
then grabs your attention, saying "Alright. So that'll be a mug
of cider, ale, and water?" she pauses, waiting for you three to
confirm the order. "If so, that'll be 10 GP all up." she says,
waiting for the payment so she can fetch the drinks.
((If you want to try and hear what the stallion said, you can
roll a perception check, Iron as normal, and Clair with
advantage))
FOR HEX/FAUST: You have view of the stage and all the patrons
there, getting ready for the sparring matches, waitresses taking
bets. You also get to see the large group passing by, although
you can only hear them laughing. In front of you, you can see
the individual in front of you with the waitress, from this
distance, you can tell that this pony is a little bit different
from other ponies. You can also just see the two hooded ponies
in the corner booth of the bar.
((Because of how you are talking to the waitress, and the
commotion from the front of the tavern, if you want you can make
a perception check at disadvantage.))
((Throughout the campaigns, I encourage you to make checks
wherever appropriate. It is up to you in the end whether you
want to make checks but I will try and drop hints/encourage you
to check. You never know what you might find))

"10 gold...right away," Clair says, reaching into his bit pouch
and pulling out a pile of coins as he sits. As he counts out
the proper amount to pay for the drinks, he tries to listen to
what's happening around. His sense of hearing is keen, but
there's just so much happening right now that he can't catch all
of it. The sparring is certainly not something he'd be that
interested in, but maybe his two companions...Distracted by the
hustle and bustle of the tavern, he touch-counts an extra couple
of coins, grabbing the 12 coins in his magic and floating them
in the direction of the waitress. "10 gold for an ale, a cider,
and a water," he says with a smile.
Perception roll at advantage
Roll 1: 4 + 9 = 13
Roll 2: 2 + 9 = 11

Bright Ember takes a drink of her ale, absently watching the
dancers up on the stage. Truth be told, she's not really paying
much attention to them, instead waiting for the dance to end and
the sparring matches to begin. Her ears swivel around at the
sound of the door opening, and she glances over briefly.
Definitely not your typical villagers. They don't exactly look
like regular travelers either, especially the one with the odd,
eyeless mask. She smiles a little into her drink. Maybe she'll
face one of them in the sparring matches. Her eyes drift from
the dancers over to the pair of hooded ponies huddled in the
corner booth. They were another couple unusual ones, their
seemingly furtive manner and concealing dress drawing Ember's
suspicion. She'd been watching them on and off for a little
while now, and now they'd taken notice and moved even closer
together. Ember was attempting to get a good look at what
exactly they were doing when the dances come to and end and the
sparring matches are announced. She downs the rest of her drink
and shakes her head at the waitress. "No, I'd rather sign up
instead." She says and rises to her paws to head down to the
stage.

Hex dismisses whatever the group is laughing about as probably
unimportant, but he slips out 10 GP for the entrance fee and
stands up. "This could be a fun little romp. Don't drink my
water while I'm gone", he playfully admonishes his companion as
he leaves the table.

---------------------------------------------------------
FOR ALL: After everyone finishes paying for bets, or to compete,
the small tournament begins. There are 8 competitors in total,
including Ember, Hex, and the apparent 'leader' of the small
group that had passed by the trio. The competition begins, going
from 8 competitors, to four, with the leader defeating his
opponent easily, and now to three, Ember and Hex now facing off
with each other in the semi-finals. "Alright! Now on to the
semi-finals! This match is now between Hex Schwambart, and
Bright Ember, the winner moving on to the grand final against
our reigning champion, Fury!" one of the waitress' says, causing
a loud cheer to fill the air from the audience. "As before,
rules are as normal. The two of you are to engage in combat
using either your bare hoofs, or rapiers, and will fight that
way until either one of you surrenders, or if it comes to it,
knocked out." she pauses before continuing. "Alright you two,
which weapon would you like to fight with? To keep it fair it
can only be one or the other." she says to both Hex and Ember.
((I need you both to decide on if the fight will be fought in
unarmed combat, or with rapiers. If we can't reach a consensus,
then I'll make the final decision.))
FOR EMBER/THYME: At the table as you watch the two individuals
at the booth, you aren't able to exactly tell what they are
doing at their booth, at best, all you can tell is that they are
both unicorns, their horns poking up from their hoods, and that
they are transferring something underneath the table with their
hoofs, not using their magic, but from the crowd, you can't tell
much more than that.
After paying the entrance fee, you get underway with the
competition, defeating each of your opponents, with not too much
difficulty. Most of them were drunk and only did it for fun, not
expecting to win. Now, you're up against one of the ponies that
had entered the pub with two others. Your opponent is Hex, an
earth pony with green fur.
FOR HEX/FAUST: After paying the entrance fee, you get underway
with the competition, defeating each of your opponents, with not
too much difficulty. Most of them were drunk and only did it for
fun, not expecting to win. Now, you're up against the individual
that was sitting near your table next to the bar. Your opponent
is Ember, a Phoenix Wolf, an uncommon sight during your travels.
FOR IRON, and CLAIR/PLO: Clair, you do try to listen in to what
the group is saying, whispering, and laughing about, but because
of the volume of the room, all you can make out is something
along the lines of something happening during the competition,
but nothing more as they walk past you, not noticing you, and
proceeding to the stage for the matches.
You both remain at your tables, the waitress serving you both
your drinks, and leaving the third for Hex at his now vacant
seat. She then takes the coins, not noticing that there were 12
pieces instead of 10, obviously distracted by the crowd. "Thank
you, if you need anything else, please let me know" she says
sweetly, finishing up her work at your table and preparing to
head off to another table.
((If you haven't done so already, take 10 GP off from your
currency, Clair, Ember and Hex. On the map, any NPC's in red are
Fury and his ponies that he was with before.))
((Here is the posting order now: Clair, Thyme, Hex, Iron. What
we will be doing now is that I will make a DM post every 3 - 7
days, regardless on whether or not you have posted. If you
didn't post, then you will simply be skipped on rolls, checks
etc. and won't be able to post until your turn in the posting
order. This is so we can try and move things along.))

---------------------------------------------------------
"Many thanks," Clair says to the waitress when she brings their
drinks, flashing his pearly whites for her and taking a sip from
his cider. His ears turn to the stage. "Now that you mention
it, if you're not needed elsewhere, would you mind staying?" He
scoots around to the side of the table farthest from the stage,
dragging his drink after him. "With eyes like mine it's
somewhat difficult to tell precisely what's happening on the
stage, so having somepony to keep me up to speed would be
greatly appreciated. And I can think of no better pony to hear
it from than such a delightfully cheerful mare such as
yourself," he requests, ignoring the fact that Iron could be
just as qualified to tell him what's happening on the stage.
The effect of a wink would be entirely lost behind his mask, so
he refrains from that.
