A Night of Fright
By: Princess Luna Date: September 12, 2018, 4:12 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
The sun was setting. The moon, a sharp crescent gently floats
opposite of its celestial counterpart. Towns and cities,
boroughs and burgs, everyone was getting ready for the night.
Nightmare Night. Spooky sights and games are matched by the
treats that will run like currency. And the costumes! So much
creativity and fun as far as the eye can see.
With the Lunar Guard spread across the empire, mixing of
traditions and heritage take place. Ponies would try delicacies
they never tasted before. Ponyville was no different. In fact,
it's the center of the whole holiday. Princess Luna herself
would be attending. A timeless tradition she doesn't plan on
breaking.
Food carts and stalls line the street as ponies chat and game.
Children go from door to door collecting candy, and dancing is
easily found around Ponyville. Bobbing for apples, carving
pumpkins, and campfires add to the lovely evening. The local
patrons and out of town visitors will have adventures big and
small tonight. The spirit of Nightmare Night is set free!
"I don't feel free at all!" Princess Luna calls out as she tries
to remove another costume. "These outfits are much too tight!"
As she tosses another onto her bed, her trusty Nightmare Moon
attire rests on her pillow. A good fallback option, it hasn't
been the only one she's worn on a night like this. This year
though, it looks like the classic look will make a return.
Another hour would pass before she steps outside, her carriage
and guards waiting. With a smile she hops on and they take off
into the sky. Their next stop, Ponyville.

Ebony trots downstairs to his living room. Full Lunar Guard look
on, his role tonight is security. However it doesn't mean he
won't have a little fun. Coldsteel finds his love, Avery,
resting on the sofa. Her dress this time is black and orange.
Wireframe bat wings on her back and witch a hat on her head
makes for a rather confusing but cute costume.
The noctral nuzzles his mare, "You're looking well. Can't wait
for a night of reading and trick or treaters?" She nods, the
thick glasses sliding down her nose before her wing tip pushes
it back up. She slowly adjusts her position. With the size of
her belly getting bigger each month, her motion has had its
limits. Coldsteel's the opposite. Always moving. Always working.
His job as Colonel isn't a cushy one. Preferring to be out in
the front rather than a desk. Soon, he'll have top stay home
much more. But tonight, it's Nightmare Night and there was much
to do. Giving Avery one last kiss, Ebony heads out to patrol the
streets.

Sitting in the shadowed area between two buildings, Nyx sat
surrounded by half a dozen wide-eyed foals. She wore no costume
beyond a simple black cloak, and she levitated a flashlight
under her chin, making her face a spooky mask of odd shadows.
She was in the middle of a story and was coming up on the
climax. "And then..." she said in a hushed voice. "The fillies
turned around and out of the darkness came..." A dramatic pause
before she shrieked and dropped the flashlight, pointing behind
the group with a terrified look. Behind the foals was a large
pony skeleton, its bones made of silver energy that sparkled in
the moonlight. It stepped towards them and the foals screamed
hysterically and fled in all directions, mostly running into
each other until they fell in a heap. Then the skeleton exploded
in a spray of silver, and as the foals realized that death by
skeleton was not imminent, their shrieks turned to giggles of
excitement. "Another! Another!" begged a pink filly as she
hopped atop Nyx's back.
Nyx smiled, and mentally celebrated that she had come to
Ponyville for Nightmare Night. She had been invited to some
fancy masquerade ball in Canterlot by her colleagues that Nyx
knew would be incredibly boring. She thanked them for the
invite, but told them she had a niece in Ponyville that she had
promised to visit months ago, and she simply wouldn't be able to
make it to the ball. Her closer colleagues had rolled their
eyes, smiling slightly. They knew perfectly well Nyx didn't have
any nieces, but they let her get away with her excuse.
"But I'm running out of stories," she told the filly, who was
now giving her puppy-dog eyes. "Just one more?" The filly
pleaded, her lip quivering a little. Nyx sighed. "Okay, okay."
The foals grew closer as she took a deep breath, mind working
quickly to come up with another spooky tale. "Once there lived a
mischievous spirit who had a great love of candy. But being
invisible, she couldn't trick-or-treat like you all to get it.
So," Nyx continued ominously. "She had to steal it from the
foals that gathered it." The fillies and colts gasped, already
appalled by such a dastardly idea. "And so, every Nightmare
Night she went about the ponies, causing chaos and gathering the
dropped candies for herself." She held her head in closer. "She
always announced her arrival at Nightmare Night by making ponies
dizzy and confused, causing them to lose their sense of balance
and fall. This was a signal that everything was about to fall
into chaos, and that all the foals' candy would be stolen by the
time the sun came up!"
A colt who was hugging his bag of candy protectively, shuddered.
"You don't think there spirit's here already, do you?" he piped
up nervously. Nyx was about to answer when a batpony passed
nearby, apparently costumed as a guard. And looking surprisingly
legitimate. Nyx idly wondered how much time he had spent on his
costume, before a devious thought crossed her mind. She cleared
her throat as her horn glowed subtly. "Don't worry, I think we'd
know if she was here. I'd say that we are safe as long as ponies
don't start falling over for no apparent reason." Her reassuring
smile calmed the foals down. Meanwhile, a very thin but strong
energy thread stretched across the batpony's path, right in
front of his hooves.

---------------------------------------------------------
Sounds of laughter and the occasional surprised shriek drift
through the open window of the hotel room, and Jazz pauses for a
moment as she unpacks things from her suitcase. She'd originally
been going to stay in Canterlot for Nightmare Night like she
normally did, but the party she'd been planning to go to had
been cancelled at the last minute. Instead, she'd decided, more
or less on impulse, to catch the train down to Ponyville and
join the festivities there. It wasn't typical to travel "in
costume", but she'd already been prepared, or at least mostly
so. Her normally white coat was dyed pure black, and her face
and upper body had been painted with a skeleton pattern in a
luminescent, sickly green. Her main and tail were dyed to match.
It was not quite finished, however. First things first, Jazz
takes out an small vial of greenish liquid with a dropper in it.
Carefully, she drips a single drop into each eye. She holds them
closed for several seconds before blinking a few times, then
heading over to the mirror. As expected, her irises had changed
from light blue to a striking yellow-green, and she grins into
the mirror and looks at herself from several angles before
turning back to the suitcase. She takes out a small bundle
wrapped in cloth and unwraps it, revealing an iron crown. She
sets it aside and goes back, coming up with a circular plastic
case, like you might see used for makeup. This is full of a
faintly yellow powder. She pulls off the lid and shakes some out
into it, then adds a few drops of water from the bathroom sink.
Once it's soaked in, she takes the cloth and scoops up some of
the mixture and starts rubbing it onto the crown. As she works,
ghostly flames start to rise from it's surface, though they
carry no heat. She then repeats the process with the rest of the
powder, rubbing it into her mane and tail in turn. Then she dons
the crown, looks herself over in the mirror for a few seconds,
and head out into the town, with an eye out for anything
interesting happening.

Fox busts out into the street, donning his mobster style outfit.
It's been a while since he had it on and he just managed to get
his actual blood stains off. There's no time to actually get a
good costume, so he improvised. His goal is game, drink, a bit
of fun, and to keep an eye out. Ebony had asked him to keep
watch with the creatures still running loose. For now though, he
had to find Niv. It would only take a few minutes before he
finds her.
Trotting in full, natural form, Nivalia has a toothy grin like
no other. With everyone thinking it's just another costume,
Nightmare Night is one of the most liberating holidays out
there. Once she spots her brother, she waves and trots over.
"Yo, bro! Happy Nightmare Night!"
The two hoof bump. "Nice to see you too. You look ecstatic. No
costume?"
She shakes her head, "Nah. Going au naturale for this year."
"How's that going?"
"Well-" she gets interrupted by a couple of stallion's
whistling. She chuckles and waves them away. "I got a few of
those. They think I'm going for a 'sexy changeling' look. Many
like it; more the stallion's though. Actually a couple mares
too."
Foxtrot smirks, "Hey, don't let it get to your head. Have you
seen Ebony around?"
Nivalia shakes her head, and the two walk down the road, "Nah,
let's go find him."

Princess Luna's chariot speeds through the clouds. Her personal
guards don't skip a beat nor flutter as they glide to their
destination. The crisp air was more refreshing in the
countryside. The breeze against her mane and stars glowing so
brightly, it was hard for her to even contain all her
excitement. Soon the feint glow of Ponyville would be in sight.
Her grin grows just a bit as they start to land. A crowd of
excited ponies gather and cheer. Their colorful outfits draw a
nice spectacle as the chariot lands.
Luna steps off and waves. She speaks slightly in her Canterlot
volume. "Good evening everyone! Thank you for having me here at
another glorious and spooky Nightmare Night! Trick or treaters
should beware." In a blue flame, Luna transforms into Nightmare
Moon. It certainly frightens the children. The adults a few
gasps and chuckles. "I just may make of meal of you!"
The gathering of colts and fillies scream out and stampede out
into town. Since ponies clap and laugh at the spectacle. "May
you ask enjoy your evening. Let the fun be doubled!"

Ebony suddenly feels a tug at his legs and starts to fall
forward. Out of instinct, his wings instantly lunge up. He would
catch himself halfway down and push himself back onto his hoofs.
The noctral looks around to find nothing there to trip him.
Magic. It's always magic, and the unicorn telling tales over
there is the closest one. He gives her a hard glare before
returning to his walk.

The kids giggle and shout as they reel from Ebonys glare. They
scatter and scurry with smiles on their faces. With the crowd
pleased, Onyx gets up and trots out into the town. The night is
young and the festivities are plenty!

Nivalia and her brother trot down the street. Laughter and
scares surround them. The two rarely have fun like this, so
finding Ebony isn't really urgent. Instead, they wander around
to take in the sights. "My, my. The costumes this year look
amazing! Nightmare Night certainly improved once Luna showed
up."
"Exactly. Although I do miss the parades back at the cities."
Foxtrot looks over to spot someone with a fiery mane and crown
"Woah! Check that one out."
Nivalia's jaw drops when she sees the outfit. "Woah! That's
awesome! I gotta find out how they did that. Excuse me!" She
gallops over with pep in her step. "Hey! I love your costume!
How did you do the..." her hoof waggles at the fiery mane,
"that. And then have the..." Nivalia points to the crown, "thing
do that?"
