Shadowed Mesa
By: Shadowed Mesa Date: April 14, 2017, 1:24 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
Name: Shadowed Mesa
Race: Pegasus
Gender: Mare
Age: Mid-Twenties
Physical Description: Average size and build, with a medium
brown coat and blue eyes. Mane and tail are purple-reddish in
color, medium in length, and worn loose. Cutie mark is a simple
light brown crossbow. A piece of her right ear is missing, and
she always wears a single gold hoop earring in the same ear.
Usually wears a dark brown weapons belt that holds her crossbow,
and a quiver with a variety of bolts for different purposes,
including tranquilizers. She also carries a large survival
knife, but doesn't use it for fighting except as a last resort.
Special Talent: Crossbow shooting- she can reload very quickly
and hit a moving target that's 50 meters away fairly easily, and
can shoot up to 80 meters on a range. Can shoot both mid-flight
and when balancing on her back legs equally well.
Likes: shooting, exploring, traveling, living off the land,
making bets, meeting new ponies
Dislikes: chocolate/candy, staying in one place, ponies who
doubt her, large crowds, hospitals, questions about her
childhood or family
Strengths: Major: shooting, hoof-to-hoof combat, wilderness
survival
Minor: good sense of direction, stealthy, cool under pressure,
high stamina
Weaknesses: can be considered "bossy", claustrophobic, hopeless
at fancy social etiquette, can be moody, blames herself for
events she has no control over, sometimes honest to the point of
being tactless, not overly educated (having no formal education,
Mesa knows little beyond the bare basics when it comes to
academic subjects)
Fears: failing to protect those under her charge, suffocation,
others finding out that she "murdered" (in her eyes) her family
Bio: Shadowed Mesa was born in the Badlands of southern
Equestria, to a botanist and cartographer who lived in
isolation, many miles away from the nearest settlement. Her
mother died just minutes after giving birth to Mesa, and in his
grief, her father blamed her for his wife's death. He made no
secret of it, alternating between ignoring Mesa completely and
going into fits of rage when she did the slightest thing wrong.
So she was instead mostly raised by her only sibling, an older
brother named Bright Spire who she grew extremely close to and
who taught her everything about surviving in the wilderness. He
made her her first crossbow when she was quite young, and she
quickly mastered shooting and earned her cutie mark.
When she was around 14, her father's grief for his lost wife
became too much for him, and he disappeared. Mesa and her
brother found his body several days later, at the bottom of one
of the steep gullies that characterized the Badlands as a result
of his apparent suicide.
By the time she was 17, Mesa had become an expert at survival
and knew the Badlands and surrounding areas like the back of her
hoof. One day, Bright Spire saw smoke in the horizon and,
fearing that there was a lost group of ponies nearby, went to
help them. Mesa, who had gotten in a minor squabble with him the
day before, refused to accompany him. He was gone for several
days before Mesa started to get worried and went after him.
After many days of searching, she finally found his body,
ravaged by predators, but with injuries suggesting that it was
not claws or teeth that killed him, but the deliberate blade of
a pony. There was no sign of the group he had been looking for.
Mesa was devastated and convinced that she was now responsible
for the deaths of her entire family, by not being a better
daughter or sister, and by being born at all. Mesa promised
herself that she would never cause the death of another pony
again, and decided to leave the Badlands and do what her brother
had died trying to do- helping and protecting others.
Abandoning her home, Mesa travelled all over Equestria, making
acquaintances (but no close friends), and familiarizing herself
with the most dangerous and wild places in the land, including
the Hayseed Swamps, San Palamino Desert, and the Everfree
Forest, to name a few. Now she works as a guide, being paid to
accompany and protect ponies while traveling through
particularly dangerous places. When she's not working, Mesa is
often found practicing shooting and fighting, meeting new
ponies, and sightseeing.
The trauma from her childhood, as well as the countless
frightening and stressful experiences Mesa has gone through due
to the nature of her profession, has left many scars. Not all of
them are visible. Flashbacks happen occasionally, and more
recently, Mesa has started to experience visual and auditory
hallucinations of her dead family. They are getting steadily
more frequent, and Mesa doesn't know why. However, she is fairly
good at ignoring them... at least in public.
Mesa is sarcastic but friendly, and extremely protective of
those under her charge. She is generally laid-back- the only
times she really gets angry (or at least shows it), is when the
strong prey on the weak, or somepony under her charge does
something to put the others in peril. Though she enjoys keeping
her skills sharp by fighting consenting opponents, she hates
hurting other ponies unless it's for a very good reason. Despite
the constant danger and stress of her job, Mesa tends to remain
very calm under pressure and is a good leader in a crisis.
