Exercise
By: KerryD Date: October 12, 2025, 6:09 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
Do you exercise? As we age, exercise often becomes more
difficult and tiresome.
My sister bought an exercise bike (or something like that) to
get exercise for her legs. Unfortunately, she has a kneecap
problem and can't use it since it causes her so much pain.
There is some good news on the other hand. Her husband wasn't
doing much except sitting in his chair watching the television.
I was worried about that, so I was happy when my sister told me
she gave the exercise machine to him and he was using it. Hey,
it's something he can do without turning the TV off.
I used to walk every day; but I had a few bad days when I kept
running out of energy so I stopped. Today I decided to try it
again. I didn't attempt a lot. I walked only three blocks; and
I was tracking the time too. If I can keep that up and slowly
increase the number of blocks while cutting back how many
minutes it takes for a block, it might help. I think getting
out of my dark house also might help.
I have other exercises I do too; but they're all indoors, in
fact I can do most of them on my bed or my chair. I used to do
weight-lifting but gave that up.

I do try . But some days I dont have the strength , especially
if it was a sleepless night!
Which often happens.
I try to do two flights of stairs up and down, & repeat , once
a day , but some days I cant manage it. I really do want to
keep my legs going, it so important .
Because of my back issue I am now bent as an old lady! ( Very
humiliating , I hate it)
But once a chiropractor told me to stand in a doorway and hold
the door jams at almost shoulder level ( like a soldier in
surrender position ) , and gently lean into the doorway and hold
that for a minute , (which pushes the shoulder back) ..even
that , Im not faithful in doing it daily , but I really should
.
Maybe Ill use this thread as an exercise inspiration..and come
here and confess it I did my daily exercises , maybe that will
keep help to me to be guilted enough into doing them! :D

Lately, I've faced the same problem. I find myself not eating
enough, and of course that makes me weak. I believe it may also
contribute to sleep problems. I find that if I lie in the bed
and do nothing, I start to get depressed and want to find others
to blame. I'm also avoiding doing some things. That's me, it
might not be so for you; but I find if I get up and do
something, I start feeling better.

I think my stairs have helped me since I have to use them
several times a day. Some houses don't have them, so I'm glad
mine does. I think they've helped me a lot.

Here's a link to a site that includes several of the exercises
I do for the back.
https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/adult-health/in-depth/back-pain/ar…
I tried going to a chiropractor but was disappointed. She never
told me the benefits of exercise. It made me wonder if she
thought I might stop going to her if my back problems went away.
Well, I did stop after several issues went away.
I had back pain bad, but now it's almost gone away completely.
It was so bad I took painkillers or drank some beer and then
still had to try to sleep propped up in my bed. Some of the
exercises will put your vertebrae back in the right shape; and
some strengthen the muscles so the vertebrae don't slip. I try
to do the "bridge exercise" and "cat stretch" at least three
times a week. I do some of the others at that link.
I also have a back pillow for the chair I use the most. It's
for either cars or chairs. If I'm tempted to start leaning like
an elderly lady or gentleman, the back pillow helps prevent it.
It's just a pillow with straps that go around the seat in a car
or on a chair; but I think it's helped me.
Mine was also quite inexpensive. It's like this one at

I think I need to call my youngest sister. Her doctor told her
she might have Alzheimer's since she's also starting to slump
over like an "old lady." She's also been told to go get tested.
I frankly doubt the two are connected as so many "experts" say.
My sister spent a lot of time sitting in a desk doing
paperwork; and I think she was likely leaning forward too much,
perhaps to see a computer screen. I see no sign at all that she
is developing mental problems. She's older than I am, but I'd
say she's sharper mentally than I am. She's certainly better at
remembering names -- I've been having trouble lately remembering
names I people I knew years ago. I can remember the person but
not the name.
Here's a site which seems to think "slumping" is a sign of
"dementia," but they admit exercise helps.

Thanks Kerry I need exercises for sure , but I dont believe
one bit that slumping and dementia are related as a cause . The
Queen in her last 5 years was very humped , but she was as sharp
as a whip.
My old Grandma slumped , but she never had any sign of not being
100% with it .
I started getting humpy shoulders at age 7 . Because I was
asthmatic . Very bad posture ( but got better as a proud
fashionable teenager haha) I got so humpy as a kid , that my mum
used to pick a holy leaf from our tree and pin it under my chin
at meal times - to get her point across !!
I hurt my lower back three years ago badly . Because of
sitting in a recliner for so many hours per day , as I couldnt
walk far without such pain.my shoulder took on the shape of the
chair . Plus I have a mechanical bed and sleep more sitting than
laying . My back is never straight .I'm guessing the muscles
have atrophied over 3 years!
I went to a spine clinic , but they said the bone had set
now and it wouldnt straighten .
At least I dont intend to let it get any worse :)

[/quote]Good for you. If we let things get worse, we'll regret
it later. I hope the exercises help. I think they will.
I also take two supplements, fish oil and glucosamine
chondroitin, for cartilage. My nurse practitioner suggested
them. Sometimes the "connections" of the bones cause problems,
and it's more a problem of the "cushioning" in joints than
bones. Glucosamine can have negative interactions with drug
thinners, but I'm not on those.

You are taking the right thing , those supplements are very
goodas you say re interacting with thinners , so many
supplements interact with the meds Im on, so I can no longer
take much at all , I can only take vit C , Vit B6 , vit D , and
magnesium but Im glad that I can take those without risk.
Ive gotta go now to the lab for my monthly blood tests Yay!
What fun.

Are you on a blood thinner? Fish oil also helps thin the blood
among its other benefits; but with medication for the same
thing, it may be too much. Maybe your doctor can tell you.
Maybe you could experiment, and if your next blood test says
it's a little to thin, you could go off the medication and stay
with the fish oil. I certainly don't know. It has so many
benefits, it might be worthwhile asking your doctor.
https://lovingveganism.org/blogs/news/5-fish-oil-benefits-and-side-effects?gad_…
Fish oil can help with memory problems too. Maybe Mike should
ask his doctor if it's okay for him? Who knows if it might help
him with the spelling problem? Studies say it can take weeks
or even up to six months before improvement begins to show up.
Monthly blood tests? I have them every four months and thought
that was excessive. Then they want me to visit them to discuss
the results. I'm glad my health insurance pays for all that.

Its taken me years to know how to balance which foods to keep
my blood fr9m bring too thick or too thin. In the early days I
used garlic , which is a very strong thinner , but the stroke
risk was so high that I was warned that I needed to go on
Warfarin, then years of tinkering to get the balance .
Im glad mine is only once a month now, I had to go every
two weeks for a couple of years , but I was getting too much
scaring on my veins a ask to move it to once a month . ( heart,
kidneys , and sodium is checked monthly. I ended up in hospital
a couple of years ago with dangerously low sodium.
Because of kidneys , I cant eat much potassium foods at all.
( Its been a journey Learning which minerals are in which
foods! )
Then getting the correct menu. ( what is good for the kidneys is
not good for the heart , so that food gets struck off the list
! The food list has shrunk .
At least I can eat a bowl of blueberries and yogurt every day
, the heart and kidneys are both happy with that! 😊
The best brain food is coconut oil . Sadly its also thins blood
, so it conflicts with warfarin, but it can cross the blood
/brain barrier. Many with dementia and regained much ground.

I am only just starting on the journey of trying to balance the
right food, along with the battle of trying to give up sweet
things. I am pre diabetic but also have to watch the blood
pressure- many things that a food course on blood pressure said
were okay, like whole grain rice and pasta are not recommended
if your trying to watch sugars. Potato is to be avoided as well,
bread is another issue. Eggs are recommended as a good source of
protein if your diabetic, but have to be limited with high blood
pressure.
I do eat a lot of chicken, and started having fish , but its
what to have it with that is challenging. I dont win the battle
every day at the moment. I have never really enjoyed cooking but
Dan and I stopped using ready meals and processed foods months
ago.
I have salad with quite a few things, and try and add
vegetables.
