Middle Management - Chapter 3 - Sister Act
Danni found me still on the bench a little while later.
"Any luck?" she asked.
"Nope," I answered. "You?"
She shook her head as she sat down next to me.
"I think you're f*cking up my mojo," I said.
"Oh. Okay," she said flatly.
Her tone suggested she didn't believe I was positing a serious
theory. It's possible she might have been right.
"What did Britney say?" I asked.
"She thinks they'd be better off if they stop training
together."
"Leesh said the same thing. Said they weren't getting the wins
they needed."
Danni nodded.
"Britney got all worked up about Leesh being stuck. How she
should be progressing up the rankings, but she's not."
"Leesh is ranked fourth," I said. "She's not exactly wasting
away at the bottom of the division."
She shrugged.
"Not good enough for Brit," she said.
"What did she have to say about herself?"
"Not much," Danni answered. "She was too busy having a
conniption over Leesh."
"Huh," I said.
"Very insightful," Danni deadpanned.
I ignored her and continued.
"Elisha didn't have much to say, at first. Then, she pushed the
conversation over to Britney and went off like a rocket."
She thought about that for a second, then said, "Huh."
I held my hands out in front of me and looked at her
expectantly.
"Mine had more substance behind it," she said.
"Oh."
"So, you don't suppose..."
"I do."
Danni let the idea roll around in her head a little longer.
"Like a sister thing," she said.
I nodded.
"We were only half right," I said. "They're both p*ssed off
about the event, but not about themselves. Each of them is
p*ssed about what happened to the other."
She considered that, then shrugged.
"Must be some sort of blond thing," she said.
I looked at her for a moment, and thought about how I had felt
in the days before and after Danni's fight with Cheryl Cole.
Silent concern had given way to unbridled jubilation after her
victory.
I also remembered how I'd felt after her previous bout, where
she'd been shredded by Candice Swanepoel.
I would rather chew rusty nails than watch that happen to her
again.
"I see how it could happen," I said.
She either ignored me, or this was one of those rare moments
when she wasn't reading my mind.
"So, what do we do about it?"
I shook my head as I wondered the same thing.
Then, I realized Elisha and Britney had already given us our
answer.
"I've got a plan," I said.
"Wow. Should I wait for you to tell me, or just run now?"
"Actually, it's pretty simple," I said. "We're going to give
them what they want."
