We all use quotes in our lives whether we realize it or not.
Perhaps we repeat a saying our grandmother used to teach us a
lesson, or remember a passage from a book that spoke to our
heart - a funny line from a film that never fails to cheer us
when we are feeling down. We inscribe wedding rings with
Shakespeare\'s words, or look for motivational words to keep us
on the right track...Quotations also connect us with others.
It\'s nice to know that someone, even a thousand years ago, felt
the way we do today.
lease share any quotes that mean something
to you. You are welcome to share why or how the quote speaks to
you, if you\'d like. :th_heartshape: Happy quoting!!
t.
Augustine\'s words have always spoken to me:
here your pleasure
is,
here is your treasure.
here your treasure is,
here is
your heart.
here your heart is,
here is your happiness.
\"The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only
one page.\"
"People travel to wonder at the height of the
mountains, at the huge waves of the seas, at the long course of
the rivers, at the vast compass of the ocean, at the circular
motion of the stars, and yet they pass by themselves without
wondering.\"

diaper-changing.\" -- Kirsten, age 10

alt=\"hurston5.jpg\">
hese are many quotes from Zora Neale
Hurston\'s novel Their Eyes Were Watching God...a book
that never fails to make me love words all over again, as well
as makes me cry. My students love me, despite my eccentric
nature. Thank God.
She stood there until something fell off
the shelf inside her. Then she went inside there to see
hat it
was.\" (Oh, my...)
"Ships at a distance have every man\'s wish
on board. For some they come in with the tide. For others they
sail forever on the horizon, never out of sight, never landing
until the Watcher turns...\"
"Janie saw her life like a great
tree in leaf with the things suffered, things enjoyed, things
done and undone. Dawn and doom was in the branches.\"
"Put me
down easy, I\'m a cracked plate.\" (incredible metaphor)
"She
had been getting ready for her great journey to the horizons in
search of people; it was important to all the world that she
should find them and they find her. But she had been whipped
like a cur dog, and run off down a back road after
things. It was all according to the way you see things.
Some people could look at a mud-puddle and see an ocean with
ships. But Nanny belonged to that other kind that loved to deal
in scraps.\"
"The years took all the fight out of Janies face.
For a while she thought it was gone from her soul. No matter
what Jody did, she said nothing. She had learned how to talk
some and leave some. She was a rut in the road. Plenty of life
beneath the surface but it was kept beaten down by the
wheels.\"
"All next day in the house and store she thought
resisting thoughts about Tea Cake. She even ridiculed him in her
mind and was a little ashamed of the association. But every hour
or two the battle had to be fought all over again. She couldnt
make him look just like any other man to her. He looked like the
love thoughts of women. He could be a bee to a blossom a pear
tree blossom in the spring. He seemed to be crushing scent out
of the world with his footsteps. Crushing aromatic herbs with
every step he took. Spices hung about him. He was a glance from
God. (oh, my again...)
"Ah couldnt stand it if he [Tea Cake]
wuz tuh quit me. Dont know whut Ahd do. He kin take most any
lil thing and make summertime out of it when times is dull. Then
we lives offa dat happiness he made till some mo happiness come
along.\"
"The wind came back with triple fury and put out the
light for the last time. They sat in company with the others in
other shanties, their eyes straining against crude walls and
their souls asking if He meant to measure their puny might
against His. They seemed to be staring at the dark, but their
eyes were watching God.\"
"Here was peace. She pulled in her
horizon like a great fish-net. Pulled it from around the waist
of the world and draped it over her shoulder. So much of life in
its meshes! She called in her soul to come and see.\" (bowing
before the Hurston altar)
"Oh to be a pear tree any tree in
bloom! With kissing bees singing of the beginning of the world!
She was sixteen. She had glossy leaves and bursting buds and she
wanted to struggle with life but it seemed to elude her. Where
were the singing bees for her? Nothing on the place nor in her
grandmas house answered her. She searched as much of the world
as she could from the top of the front steps and then went on
down to the front gate and leaned over to gaze up and down the
road. Looking, waiting, breathing short with impatience. Waiting
for the world to be made.\"
"She knew the world was a stallion
rolling in the blue pasture of ether. She knew that God tore
down the old world every evening and built a new one by sun-up.
It was wonderful to see it take form with the sun and emerge
from the gray dust of its making.\"
"He [Tea Cake] drifted off
into sleep and Janie looked down at him and felt a self-crushing
love. So her soul crawled out from its hiding place.\" (oh, my
again)
