Zeybek
By: Angel/Poyraz Date: July 13, 2011, 2:33 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
The zeybek is a form of folk dance peculiar to Western Anatolia
in Turkey. It is named after the Zeybeks.
e Greek popular dance
of the same name (Zeibekiko) may have its roots in the Anatolian
zeybek dance.

eybek
s
were people living in Asia Minor. The majority of them came from
Yrk and Trkmen villages.
efore the establishment of the
Republic of Turkey , large concentrations of Zeybeks could be
found in western Anatolia particularly in ?zmir, Burdur, Afyon,
Ktahya, U?ak, Denizli, Ayd?n, Isparta, Manisa, Mugla, Antalya,
and the Bal?kesir area.
eybeks were mountain warriors of
Western Anatolia during the 13th - 19th centuries. Zeybeks
generally had Turkmen and Yrk origins. They acted as
protectors of village people against landlords, bandits and tax
collectors. A leader of a Zeybek gang was called \"EFE\" and his
soldiers were known as \"K?zan\"....\"K?zan\" was generally used
for untrained Zeybeks. There was generally a tribe democracy in
group. Decisions was taken in a democratic way, after the
decision was taken \"EFE\" has an uncontroversial authority.
They followed definite rituals for all actions; for example, the
promotion of a \"k?zan\" to zeybek was very similar to Ahi
rituals.
eybeks had a special dance in which performers
simulated hawks. Romantic songs about their bravery are still
popular in Turkish folk music. The Yatagan sword was their
primary weapon, but most of them carried firearms as
well....
ll zeybek dances have a common characteristic form,
but the positioning of the arms and body differ according to the
different regions. The rhythm is also very characteristic, a
pattern of nine slow beats: 9/4 = 2+2+2+3 beats or 3+2+2+2 with
occasional variations.

What an interesting topic! Well, here in Greece Zeibekiko is
different, at least the way it is danced today , as @PeRi said
above.
hese are the two most known Zeibekiko\'s rhythm in
Greece, Aivaliotikos and Aptalikos - both have their roots in
Mikra Asia( today\'s Aegean side of Turkey, where Greeks lived
there for ages). Aivaliotikos(Ayvalik) is a slow, ritual dance.
So the dancer will be featured.

/>width=\"459\"></iframe>
he other one is very well know
n
as Aptaliko, quick/fast dance but also in 9/8 ruthm.
div
class=\"ipsEmbeddedVideo\">
frameborder=\"0\" height=\"344\"
src=\"

/>width=\"459\"></iframe>
div

frameborder=\"0\" height=\"270\"
src=\"
https://www.youtube.com/embed/n4fe1GkxwEs?start=120&feature=oembed\"<br
/>width=\"480\"></iframe>
nd , may be the most famous
zeibekiko - today - in Greece:
div
class=\"ipsEmbeddedVideo\">
frameborder=\"0\" height=\"270\"
src=\"
https://www.youtube.com/embed/Ri4A16DfUTo?start=44&feature=oembed\"<br
/>width=\"480\"></iframe>
And this moment:
div
class=\"ipsEmbeddedVideo\">
frameborder=\"0\" height=\"270\"
src=\"
https://www.youtube.com/embed/Zfla6ZScIsI?start=49&feature=oembed\"<br
/>width=\"480\"></iframe>
......and many, many more!
t\'s
amazing how countries with common borders share similar folklore
music! The best definition that there are no borders among
people but only among governments!
