CBC tells journalists to not call Hamas 'terrorists' in leaked

the word �terrorist� when referring to Hamas fighters in its

�terrorists,'� the memo states, emphasizing �do not� with bold
type. �The notion of terrorism remains heavily politicized and
is part of the story. Even when quoting/clipping a government or
a source referring to fighters as �terrorists,� we should add
context to ensure the audience understands this is opinion, not
fact. That includes statements from the Canadian government and
Canadian politicians.�
The memo originated from George Achi, Director of Journalistic
Standards at the public broadcaster. It also cautions CBC
journalists not to refer to 2005 as �the end of the occupation�
of Gaza, �as Israel has maintained control over airspace,
seafront and virtually all movement into or out of the area.�
At least one Canadian politician took issue with that ruling.
Conservative Senator Leo Housakos took to X (formerly Twitter),
calling Hamas �a blood thirsty terrorist group,� and adding:
�The CBC doesn�t have the journalistic integrity to call it as
it is.�
The CBC is not the only news organization to eschew �terrorist�
in its coverage. In a recent interview with Jewish Insider,
former Washington Post editor weighed in on the distinction.
�The basic policy that we had at the Post, which I embrace, is
we should talk about acts of terrorism rather than
characterizing individuals, and so when it�s a terrorist act we
call it a terrorist act,� he said. We did tend to use the word
�militants.� I mean, Hamas is the government in Gaza. But
clearly, at least in my mind, this was an act of terrorism, no
question. There is such a thing as state terrorism, by the way,
and in my view, this qualifies as state terrorism, so that would
be my take on it.�
Recent news about the conflict from the website of Al Jazeera
refers only to �fighters� in its coverage of Hamas combatants.
The BBC recently defended its decision to not use the word
�terrorist,� after Britain�s Defence Secretary called the policy
�verging on disgraceful.� The New York Times was recently called
out by an opinion piece in The Washington Times for changing a
headline from �Hamas terrorists� to �Hamas gunmen.�
The 2017 publication Terrorism and the Media: A Handbook for
Journalists, released by the United Nations� Educational,
Scientific and Cultural Organization, does not offer a
definitive ruling on the use of them, noting only that it is
fraught with �emotions, memories and debate.�
�State terrorism generally escapes the notice of those who try
to forge a common international definition of terrorism within
intergovernmental organizations,� it notes. �And yet, the word
�terrorism� comes from the Reign of Terror perpetrated by
Robespierre during the French Revolution, at the end of the 18th
century.�
Meanwhile, the CBC�s ruling, while recently reiterated, is not
new. A 2011 complaint from a viewer expressed concerns about a
story that described two Palestinians killed by Israeli soldiers
as �militants,� and not �terrorists.�
�It is the CBC�s practice � and it has been the practice in CBC
newsrooms for over 30 years now � to try to avoid using the
words �terror� and �terrorist� on their own as a form of
description without attribution,� Esther Enkin, executive editor
of CBC news, wrote at the time. �I think you will find many of
the leading news organizations in the western world follow a
similar practice.�

I dislike promoting enemy content that entices us to
underestimate present-day "whites". This is one of the worst
mistakes we can make at this point. Sweden a few years ago was
considered more left-leaning than Canada; look at how far to the
right it has moved by now! If we are not careful, the same could
happen in Canada.
