a gang of typical high school bullies. |
|
In other words, the ignobility of these cave paintings isn't a |
|
matter of their style nor their substance, but the artists' |
|
interpretation of the latter. Whereas we would frame them as |
|
depicting the brutality of hunting, Gentiles frame them as |
|
depicting its glory. |

I actually like the thought that these paintings influenced at |
|
least some of our ancestors in their decision to reject their |
|
more primitive contemporaries' violent lifestyle. I strongly |
|
believe that empathy and artistic sensitivity are intrinsically |
|
linked. Graphic hunting depictions such as your examples or this |
|
painting... |

To support this point, we could also note that cave paintings |
|
depicting gathering are far rarer (in fact I myself have yet to |
|
come across one!) If hunting scenes were painted purely as a |
|
celebration of being able to obtain food, we would at least |
|
expect gathering scenes to also have been painted with similar |
|
frequency. That the latter were not suggests, as you say, that |
|
the emphasis was on glory, whereupon indeed gathering scenes |
|
would not have been painted as gathering is generally much less |
|
difficult/dangerous. |
