Bleeding Control (4-6 Hours)
The Bleeding Control course (BCON) was motivated by the 2012
tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary and multiple tragedies that
have occurred since that time. With what is known as the
Hartford Consensus, leaders in law enforcement, representatives
from the federal government, and the medical community convened
to address the issue of survivability from traumatic injuries
during man made or natural mass casualty events. The resulting
information concluded that survivable injuries that resulted in
fatalities often were related to severe bleeding, which when
left unattended to in a timely manner, caused the death of the
casualties. The consensus concluded that by providing first
responders (LE, Fire, EMS) and Civilian bystanders with the
basic skills and equipment to stop uncontrolled bleeding in an
emergency situation, lives would be saved. Skills the student
will learn consist of the proper application of tourniquets as
first line life-saving interventions as well as proper
application of packing gauze/ hemostatic agents to areas of
uncontrolled bleeding.
*Students will also receive a Tourniquet upon completion of
this training.
