| unidentified murder victim whose body was found in May 1974. Her | |
| suspected murderer was arrested but she has never been | |
| identified, despite extensive investigation. | |
| Discovery of the body[edit] | |
| The strangled body of a young woman was found on May 28, 1974, | |
| on the jetty of Alamitos Beach in Long Beach, California.[1] | |
| She was estimated to be between 20 and 28 years old and had been | |
| raped.[2] Basic physical examination showed she was about 5 feet | |
| 5 inches tall and weighed about 118 pounds. The victim was white | |
| with possible Hispanic ancestry, as she had brown or black hair | |
| and brown eyes.[3] She also had a unique scar on the back of her | |
| left hand, which was shaped like the letter T. She also had an | |
| inch-long scar on the back of her left thigh. | |
| She was wearing a white gold, 14-karat engagement ring with a | |
| small diamond.[4] She was clothed in a pinkish-orange suit with | |
| a faux black fur coat and calf-high suede boots. | |
| The only items the Jane Doe carried were a house key and padlock | |
| key. The padlock key was attached to a broken chain.[5] | |
| Investigation | |

| An additional reconstruction | |
| No missing persons have been found who match the victim's | |
| description. Investigators have the girl's DNA and | |
| fingerprints.[6][7] A forensic facial reconstruction was created | |
| by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children to | |
| assist with identification.[8] | |
| Arrest of Gary Stamp[edit] | |
| Police received a confession from a Texas man who claimed he had | |
| assisted with dumping the victim's body. He led authorities to | |
| another suspect.[9] | |
| On May 20, 2013, a man named Gary Stamp (some sources state | |
| "Stump"), aged 61, was arrested. He confessed to the girl's | |
| murder but was not certain of her name, which may have been | |
| Anna.[10] Stamp was arraigned on June 12, 2013, in Superior | |
| Court.[11] | |
| The victim may have been seen at a bar earlier. Stamp told | |
| police that he had met her at a bar.[12] | |

| Long Beach police arrest man for 1974 murder | |
| By Joe Segura, Staff Writer | |
| POSTED: 06/05/13, 12:01 AM PDT | |
| LONG BEACH - Homicide detectives arrested a 61-year-old man for | |
| the rape and murder of a woman in 1974 -- though they still | |
| don't know the identity of the victim. | |
| After reopening a cold case investigation into the identity of | |
| Jane Doe No. 40, police were led to the suspect, Gary Stamp of | |
| Long Beach, who was arrested in connection with the May 28, | |
| 1974, murder, officials announced Wednesday. The woman's body | |
| was found 39 years ago on Alamitos Beach. | |
| Stamp is scheduled for arraignment on June 12 in Long Beach | |
| Superior Court, according to police spokeswoman Cynthia Arrona. | |
| The suspect reportedly confessed to killing the woman, whose | |
| name might be "Anna," after raping and strangling her then | |
| disposing of her body on the beach. Through additional | |
| interviews, detectives believe the suspect met the woman in a | |
| bar or on the street in the downtown area, Arrona said. | |
| Long Beach Homicide Detectives Todd Johnson and Malcolm Evans | |
| were led to a suspect/witness living in Texas who admitted to | |
| helping Stamp dispose of the victim's body, Arrona said | |
| Wednesday. The Los Angeles District Attorney's Office will | |
| ultimately review his involvement and determine his culpability, | |
| Arrona said. | |
| The case originally was a candidate for funding through a | |
| National Institute of Justice "Solving Cold Cases with DNA" | |
| grant, and cold case investigators focused their attention on | |
| the backlog of unsolved homicides awaiting case review, evidence | |
| screening, and potential DNA analysis. | |
| However, cold case investigators were unable to locate any | |
| evidence remaining in the case that could be submitted for DNA | |
| analysis, and it appeared the case was destined to return to the | |
| cold case shelves. | |
| Troubled that the young woman had remained unidentified for | |
| nearly four decades and puzzled that they could not locate a | |
| missing persons report that matched Jane Doe No. 40's physical | |
| description, investigators reviewed the case file once again. | |
| However, since the case no longer met the grant criteria for | |
| further cold case investigation due to the lack of evidence | |
| suitable for DNA testing, investigators turned the case over to | |
| homicide detectives Johnson and Evans, according to the police | |
| spokeswoman. | |
| With the assistance of the National Center for the Missing and | |
| Exploited Children, a rendering of the victim has been made | |
| available and Long Beach Police are hopeful someone can identify | |
| the victim. She is white or Hispanic; late teens to early 20s; | |
| 5-foot-2, weighing 135 pounds with long brown hair and brown | |
| eyes. She has a scar on the top of her left hand. | |
| Anyone with information is urged to call 562-570-7244. | |
