| [Chapter one] | |
| "My name is Westley Arctus. I'm about six feet four inches tall, | |
| with short, black hair and bright blue eyes. I have tan skin and | |
| a very muscular build. I am twenty five years old. I don't have | |
| very much money, and I live on a dirty shack on the waterfront, | |
| but, I'm not just any common beggar. It was about...three years | |
| ago when I saved Cyrodiil from the clutches of the mythic dawn | |
| and Mehrunes Dagon. Dagon wanted to make nirn part of his realm | |
| of oblivion, but I wasn't letting any of that happen. It's not | |
| that I had much of a choice anyway. | |
| Let's see. This is how it all started out. The morning I first | |
| met the emperor, I was arrested for loitering. That's right. I | |
| was arrested for just idly standing in the middle of the Talos | |
| plaza district and doing nothing. Not a very glorious arrest, I | |
| know, kid." | |
| "Can we get to the exciting part already??" The Nord boy sitting | |
| in front of me asked with an eager tone. | |
| I laughed. | |
| "We will. If you let me finish my story without interrupting | |
| me!" A smile spread across my face as the boy began to look | |
| slightly embarrassed | |
| "I'm sorry, sir." He murmured. | |
| "It's fine." I let out a relaxed sigh and looked around the | |
| Arboretum. The Imperial City had always been beautiful, though I | |
| prefer the little village I was born in. There's a bit too much | |
| stone in the city, not enough nature. At least it was sunny and | |
| warm out today. I looked back at the small boy sitting next to | |
| me and smiled. | |
| "So." I said "Lets get back to the story you love so much. Where | |
| was I?" | |
| "You got arrested for loitering!" The boy giggled | |
| I laughed. "Ah, now I remember. Well, they brought me to the | |
| dungeons in the prison district reserved for prisoners serving | |
| the longest time, and for prisoners that are on death row. I | |
| don't know why they put me there for idly standing around, but I | |
| guess it was just fate." | |
| "Why was it fate?" The Nord boy looked curious. | |
| "Well, turns out my cell had a secret passage that led out of | |
| the city. It was reserved for the emperor during emergencies in | |
| case he ever had to sneak out the city. You see, at the time, | |
| there was this daedric cult that worshipped Dagon. They wanted | |
| to help the prince of destruction take nirn for himself, so they | |
| assassinated the emperor's sons, and were after him next." | |
| "And they succeeded at killing Uriel Septim, right?" | |
| "Sadly, yes. I-" | |
| "Hurolf!" A voice bellowed out. I looked over to see a large | |
| Nord man with a goatee, long black hair tied back into a | |
| ponytail, and dark blue eyes glaring at me. | |
| The small Nord boy, apparently called Hurolf, turned around and | |
| looked at the Nord man. | |
| "Yes, papa?" | |
| "Go back to the inn. I don't want you around...his kind." | |
| "But papa, you're not human either..." | |
| "Werewolves are nothing but trouble! Back to the inn!" | |
| Hurolf hung his head as he trotted back to the inn. The Nord man | |
| approached me and frowned. | |
| "You stay away from my son, you oversized dog." | |
| "I didn't choose to be what I am." I said with a slight tone of | |
| attitude in my voice | |
| "But you can choose wether or not you go near my son. And you | |
| better choose not to." | |
| "You're not a very friendly bloodsucker, are you?" | |
| "I don't treat animals and mortals equally." He said simply | |
| before turning around and walking after his son. | |
| I felt a chill run down my spine, then I frowned. There was | |
| something off about that man, but I couldn't quite put my finger | |
| on it. He gave off a bad feeling. Then again, most vampire give | |
| off bad feelings. Even to mortals they just sent chills down | |
| your spine. Guess it has to do with the fact they're pretty much | |
| walking corpses. | |
| A small sigh escaped my mouth, and I stood up. I brushed my | |
| pants off and began walking to the market district. I got so | |
| caught up in telling that boy about saving Cyrodiil I had forgot | |
| I had promised my friend Rexus that I would meet him by the feed | |
| bag in the market district. Rex was going to be pissed I was | |
| late again. He's my best friend, and was there, at least | |
| mentally, for me during the entire oblivion crisis. I'm always | |
| late for our hangout sessions though, and I'm pretty sure he's | |
| sick of it. Thank the nine he puts up with it though, because I | |
| may have a lot of fans, but not many friends. I'm very short | |
| tempered, and people don't like that. Especially if you're a | |
| werewolf. I even had to do Hircine a favor so I could have his | |
| ring to control my transformations. I'd be killed on sight if I | |
| ever transformed in public. | |
| ******* | |
| The walk to the Feed Bag seemed kind of long. I couldn't get my | |
| mind of that vampire that had scolded me earlier. I just don't | |
| know why, but I felt like he was connected to the recent spike | |
| in vampire attacks around Cyrodiil. Pretty much every day now, | |
| it was in the Black Horse Courier that a few people were killed | |
| by vampires, or a small village was burned down by vampires, or | |
| a group of vampires got into a city and started slaughtering | |
| people and trying to burn things down before being put down by | |
| the guards. There haven't been any attacks inside the Imperial | |
| City yet, but there were definitely quite a few attacks on the | |
| trail here, and Weye was assaulted recently. Only one person had | |
| been killed, and it was that old fisherman. I don't quiet | |
| remember his name, but he was old enough to retire, and it was | |
| quite sad that he was killed. | |
| I pushed open the door to the Feed Bag. A few of the patrons | |
| were clumsily stumbling around the tavern, obviously very | |
| intoxicated. I glanced around the room, and noticed a large | |
| Breton man with hazel eyes and brown hair that was at least down | |
| to his shoulders glaring at Rex. From the clothes he was | |
| wearing, he looked pretty rich. I looked over and grinned at my | |
| Redguard friend. He was shorter than me by a few inches, but | |
| definitely a bit more muscular. I approached him and took my | |
| seat on the barstool next to him. | |
| "Westley." Rex nodded at me and smiled "I see you're late | |
| again." | |
| "I got caught up in telling a child about the Oblivion Crisis." | |
| I said sternly "I'm sorry for being late." | |
| Rex let out a low chuckle | |
| "It's fine, wolf boy. You don't have to rush to meet me, take | |
| your time. I'm usually at the places we hang out at long after | |
| you go home." | |
| I felt relieved, and it obviously showed because Rex chuckled | |
| again. I suddenly frowned. | |
| "Who's that rich dude glaring at you." | |
| "Someone who lost his money in a game of poker. A hundred | |
| septims. Haughty bastard thought he could beat me. Ha! He didn't | |
| know what he was in for!" | |
| "You hide cards in your sleeves and shoes." | |
| "And so does he. Definitely a worthy opponent but I still won." | |
| I snickered a bit. | |
| "Good job. You definitely drained him of all his savings." | |
| Rex rolled his eyes | |
| "The sense of winning is good enough for me." | |
| I snorted and ordered a cold beer. | |
| "Hey...Rex?" | |
| "Hmm?" Rex looked at me | |
| "You're a vampire. And the vampires in the city are familiar | |
| with each other, right?" | |
| "Yeah. We are. Why?" | |
| "There was this Nord vampire...he was the father of the boy I | |
| was talking to. Know anything about him?" | |
| "What'd he look like?" | |
| "Black hair like mine, except it was long and tied back into a | |
| ponytail, and blue eyes. Something like the color of a sapphire. | |
| He also had a goatee." | |
| Rex furrowed his brow in thought and frowned. | |
| "No. I don't know him. Must be new to the city." | |
| "Ah. I hope he leaves." | |
| Or dies. I would prefer if he died. I thought bitterly to | |
| myself. I know that he has something to do with these vampire | |
| attacks. I'll get to the bottom of it too... | |
| ******* | |
| Rex and I idly chattered for a while. We talked about a few | |
| rumors going around the city, a few jobs maybe we could take to | |
| make some extra coin, random shit like that. I became quite | |
| concerned when Rex put down his drink and looked me dead in the | |
| eye. | |
| "So. How far are you willing to go to get extra cash." | |
| I raised an eyebrow at him | |
| "What do you mean..." My tone came out as very unsure. | |
| "You know about all the recent vampire attacks. Ocato offered to | |
| pay us if we investigated it. A thousand septims each. So, I | |
| took the job!" | |
| A frown formed across my face. | |
| "Rex! You know I don't like it when you hire me for things | |
| without my knowledge!" | |
| "I know, I know! He just wanted us to investigate a few caves | |
| outside the city! Nothing too bad. He thinks that there may be a | |
| vampire matriarch somewhere..." | |
| "I'm a mercenary, not a vampire hunter, Rexus." | |
| "But I'm a vampire. I know plenty about my own kind. All we | |
| gotta do is find the matriarch, shake him or her up a bit, then | |
| we'll have the information we need and the legion will be able | |
| to stop the attacks! Sounds simple enough, right? And the pay is | |
| tremendous." | |
| I let out an irritated puff of air. | |
| "Fine. You're lucky I need the money or I'd normally kick your | |
| ass for hiring me to do something without my knowledge." | |
| "Understandable, Mr. Arctus. Let's go suit up and investigate | |
| these caves." | |
| "Don't call me by my last name, please, it reminds me of how | |
| much Azzan yelled at me when I was in the fighters guild." A | |
| laugh escaped me. | |
| Rex snorted | |
| "Just get your lazy ass up and let's go do this." | |
| I rolled my eyes at Rex and stood up. We stopped at my house and | |
| I changed into some iron armor, then I walked with him towards | |
| the Talos Plaza district. | |
| "Heavy armor, Westley? Usually go for light. You have hay fever | |
| or something?" | |
| "No. I just don't want an arrow going through my chest." | |
| "Ah." | |
| We stayed quiet the rest of the way to the main gate in the | |
| Talos plaza. I pushed the gate open and followed Rex on the main | |
| path. I hoped this little adventure didn't take long. I haven't | |
| been keeping track of the phases of the moon. | |
