Charming man but at the end of the day I ask, what difference
does it make? I expect we've heard it all before.
I was never familiar with The Smiths but a colleague's son used
to listen to their music none stop whilst revising for bar
exams.

I think listening to any kind of modern 'music' is a
generational thing, a phase the generation after mine has to go
through.I missed it all thank God. And am none the worse for it.
The phase among young people here back in 1957, was romantic
love music, which being heterosexual male I enjoyed hoping I
would meet someone in Canada who reciprocated . It took a long
time before that happened, which looking back stood me in good
stead as I made a success of my marriage... So far..and avoided
cultural sex inclined errors.. The church helped there too,
Vatican 2's misreading instructions were not fully in place.
Among Young Catholics back then there were meetings to play at
someone's place, semi-classical music on records, not the modern
popular in some quarters , because it was new, rock type, to
satisfy the restless non churchy soul.

I like romantic music too, Leslie. There is still a lot about
and always has been.
Though not familiar with 'The Smiths', I was aware their songs
were known to be depressing or rather, expressed depressive
feelings. They obviously struck chords with some people or they
wouldn't have enjoyed their niche popularity.
Greg posted on this thread yesterday, I saw it briefly but the
post had disappeared by the time I came back. From what I
remember he was not a fan of the Smiths :-).

Not exactly - I didn't know their music. In any event, I saved
my post before wiping it as I sometimes do in case I relent and
post it again. Here it is:
"Having lost interest in pop music in the 1980's when this group
was at its height, I don't remember them. Still, they might well
have chosen a more interesting name than the boring The Smiths.
For example, they could have parodied another group of the time,
Duran Duran, and called themselves Durex Durex (first single
Johnny Come Lately perhaps?) Anyway, better latex than never..."
I subsequently watched a couple of videos of them. Not to my
taste but I fail to see why Steve is so anti them. And that
(late) bass player, Andy Rourke did sound good.

I'm not saying the Smiths were rubbish, but I once walked past a
venue where they were appearing. There were two bouncers
outside, grabbing people and throwing them in.

And that really happened; I know because Steve was there :-).
I feel a video is appropriate:

Not really my cup of tea, but not bad, a certain engagingly
wistful quality to the song and the singer's voice, and the
instrumental backing is solid enough. Oil give it foive.

I'd give it 6.5, not bad at all. However I looked at another
video of theirs yesterday and did not enjoy watching them at
all, particularly the singer whom I found extremely odd and a
little creepy. Nothing wrong with being odd and a little creepy
in the entertainment world (Sparks spring to mind whom I don't
dislike), vive la difference et tout a, but that one wasn't to
my taste.
Obviously not to Steve's taste either for different reasons but
his reaction was extreme.

Morrisey, the "vain and creepy" singer, is extremely vain and
pretentious (He insisted on his autobiography appearing as a
Penguin classic, and Penguin shamefully gave way), and has
flirted with far-right politics. I always think that using a
surname alone is rather pretentious (cf also Kennedy, the
fiddler).
