It was his feast day on the 21st August and I found out by |

attending Mass that day. |
|
No other saint encouraged me more to become Roman Catholic. An |
|
encyclical criticising Modernism. (A heresy) is one of my |
|
favourites. |
|
[i]Putting paid to modernism, the most slippery and insidious of |
|
all heresies, in his encyclical Pascendi Dominici Gregis. Again, |
|
the Pope gets to the nub of the matter: |

For scholastic philosophy and theology they have only ridicule |
|
and contempt. Whether it is ignorance or fear, or both, that |
|
inspires this conduct in them, certain it is that the passion |
|
for novelty is always united in them with hatred of |
|
scholasticism, and there is no surer sign that a man is on the |
|
way to Modernism than when he begins to show his dislike for |
|
this system. |

I confess. I have never read all the many pages of the |
|
encyclical. It was not available to me as a would-be convert. |
|
The Catholic Truth Society produced many religious books and I |
|
probably had one of them about the life of St.Pius X. I was |
|
impressed by what CTS said about him. And that helped in my |
|
conversion. |
