Newbie with some really simple newbie questions

Hello everyone!
Thanks to KGTropicals for their great website, youtube videos,
and podcasts. I have learned alot but still need help with some
basic questions.
It is going to be my son's 8 year old birthday coming up and
he/me both want a fish aquarium.
I wanted to do it right from the start but still not get too
much over our heads.
We decided to go for a 29 gallon tank size. We are going for
acrylic even though it is more expensive. Just want the best
visual experience. We also bought and built our fish tank
stand. I believe we decided on tropical community freshwater
fish.
Okay so I have gotten that far at this point.
We have been to all 3 of our local pet stores to do research as
well.
Here are a few of our basic newbie questions. Just wanted to
know before I make a mistake and I appreciate any help you all
can give.
1. Is it true that some fish you "have" to buy in schools like
Neon Tetras while others you can buy one at a time like Bosemani
Rainbows. You can't just buy one Neon Tetra right or you are
not supposed too. Just still learning which ones.
2. For my acrylic tank do I need an acrylic lid? One place I
read said I need a lid to add more structural stability to it.
Would I need a lid and a cover too with the lightning?
3. Also since we are beginners I'm not ready for the breeding
topic yet. Is there a best way to avoid breeding? Once again
sorry just beginners and I over-analyze things.
4. Lastly, my wife was liking the Serpae Tetras but then I read
they can be "fin-nippers". I kind of just want the peaceful
type that play along with each other. Any concerns or just me
over-analyzing again?
Sorry for the simple questions. I appreciate your advice and
the "peaceful community" of fish keepers. Looking forward a
great family experience keeping fish.
Sincerely,
Darren

I'm still kind of new too but the best way to avoid breeding is
to have all male or all female. That is the only for sure way to
not have any breeding. Sorry I'm not more help I am an African
Cichlid guy. I am going to be setting up a community planted
tank hopefully by the end of the year.
Good Luck

Hi Dmaybee, and welcome to the forum, and the fish keeping
hobby!
I don't know what part of the country you live in, but know that
PetCo is currently doing there $1 / gallon tank sale. Might
just save you a bit of money and be able to get a larger (say 40
gallon) tank.
Let me give you my opinion on your questions.
1. Your concern should be for the health and well being of the
fish. Neon Tetra's are a schooling type fish. Sure you can
purchase one single fish but I doubt highly he'll be very happy.
Most smaller 'schooling' fish like to be in groups of 6 or
more. (Safety in numbers kind of thing) Not to forget, they look
so much better in a group.
2. Your acrylic tank should be structural all by itself. Lids
are totally optional equipment in my experience.
Now if you have fish that like to jump, or your trying to reduce
evaporation, then a lid is a must.
3. You really can't do anything about breeding. You can however
stay away from 'live bearing' tropical fish
(Guppy/Mollies/Platties/ect), and stick with egg layers. Most
'mom and pop' fish stores will give you store credit for babies
that you bring in. Course it's not much credit, but every
little bit counts.
4. Serpae Tetra's are awesome fish. These do need to be kept in
groups of 6 or more. For the most part, they'll establish their
own pecking order and stick together. The fin nipping comes
from keeping them in a tank with slower moving fish. Personally
I wouldn't mix Neon and Serpae's together as neon's tend to be a
bit sensitive.
Best of luck to you and your son's new adventure together.
Oh, and happy birthday :)
Paul

Hello, hello,
Thanks guys. I really appreciate your advice.
I'm sure I will be back for my questions again.
My son is really excited. He even has names for them picked
out.
He even hugged his fish tank stand last night.
:D
