Cloudy tank
By: hattyhattet91 Date: February 6, 2015, 1:22 am

How to diagnose the problem? Im trying to keep 4 koi in 75
gallon with two dual 60_90gal carbon filters. I have my 4 koi, 2
crawdads and 1 albino algae sucker fish quarantine in my 20
gallon tank with 3 air stones both dual filters and a hard
plant. Till I fix the water problem. I used the cloudy water for
the 20 gallon and I think its clearing up hard to tell now.
There's 40% left in the 75gallon. How should I go about this?
Asap I'm going to all filtration wet dry sump protein skimmer
with plants. What are some hardy plants to help my fish. I'm
going to buy clams too. Sorry if this is a lot but I really want
to keep my koi friends. Should I start over take out the sand
and work on keeping healthy and clear while slowing adding.
Thanks in advance for your wisdom🙏

I understand I must establish the cycle with some good bacteria.

How large are your koi?
Just how new is your tank? Has it had a chance to cycle?
4 Koi in a tank that size is going to be a struggle to keep your
water quality high. The addition of a sump will help you keep
the water quality easier to maintain. However, the addition of
a protein skimmer will do little to nothing for your efforts.
Check out this video from the King of DIY about skimmers:

Water quality is number one importance. Plastic plants may be
your best bet as koi will eat just about any live plant in your
aquarium.
Best of luck.

OK thanks I think im in my second cycle if I understand the
term. The biggest is only about 2.5 in without the tail. I had
to do a 100% water change still using one carbon filter for the
second cycle, they are doing better in my opinion. Had to take
drastic measures I think there where starting to get swim
Blatter disease. It all happens cause I lazy and didn't change
the filters till I woke up and tank was covered in algae. Hope I
don't do it again.

Its a old tank but it is new water but I probably should have
let it set up longer but I feared more for there life where they
where so I put them into the 75gal with new water. There's no
chlorine in are water tho we have well not tap. I put recommend
supplements in to a few hours before I added my koi.

I'm sorry the link didn't work for you. I'll post the video
below. The main reason for the video was to show you that a
protein skimmer on a freshwater tank just won't work.

In addition, I think you might be confused (or I am not
understanding your comment) about cycling your tank. There
isn't a 'second' cycle, it's one (sometimes long) process.
Check out John's simply process for cycling your new tank.

Once you get your sump setup, and some good biological bacteria
growing, your koi will do much better.
Keep us informed how things progress. (Pictures are always good)
