Hybrids ...

Here's a hairy tank talk topic for you, John. I thought of it
when I ran across this article on the internet.
http://www.biotopeone.com/plight-of-the-purist-amid-designer-species/
Just FYI, I dabble with domestics (read hybrids) and location
wild populations with the live bearers. I actually went to live
bearers because unlike cichlids, there wasn't the big stigma
with hybrids. There are some purists as far as people who like
to only keep the location wild species and they don't apply any
selective breeding to their lines, but I find cichlid purists to
be much more harsh.
If you ask me, the second we start putting the fish into our
glass boxes with their limited genetic pools and no means for
true natural selection (there are no predators in my mollie
tanks, we alter the population in a way that wouldn't happen in
the wild anyway, so I don't see the huge fuss over hybrids. I
do keep a few species that way when I can but more because I
like to watch and see what sort of natural variants pop up in an
unguided wild population than any feelings of obligation towards
preserving the natural state of the species.
If I recall, you like hybrids as well as the "wild" species too.
But anyway, I thought it could be a very interesting topic.

I agree with you. As far as hybrids go if I buy a fish and the
seller says these are from this male and that female, I'm fine.
They can be very nice looking fish. I also feel we need to stop
buying wild caught. Marc, of the African Cichlid Hub posted a
video of releasing fish to help replace depleted natural stock.
When you can get beautiful fish from a reputable breeder or farm
why not let the wild populations build back up. I think some
people want bragging rights to say I got this F0 zebra
whatever, when a tank raised one is just as nice and is used to
a tank environment. I hope I don't offend anybody, just my
opinion
