| 40gal breeder questions | |
| By: Tzetter Date: October 16, 2014, 5:15 pm | |
| --------------------------------------------------------- | |
| Hey guys and gals. I just have a few questions regarding a tank | |
| I have in the planning stage. | |
| I was able to get my hands on a new 40 gallon breeder really | |
| cheap, and I've been wanting to move from my normal | |
| planted/community tanks to African's. Everything I'm reading is | |
| saying to stick with a 55 gallon at least for all the African's. | |
| Would this be true even though a 40 gallon breeder has about 24 | |
| inches^2 more surface area than a standard 55gal. I plan on | |
| adding a cheap (rubbermaid) sump to add at least 20 gallons of | |
| stability and a lot more bio filter material to the system. | |
| Also if I could make this work what species would I be limited | |
| to? I'm particularly fascinated my mbuna's and some of the | |
| peacocks. | |

| In my opinion, your 40 breeder would work just fine. | |
| Say a dozen or so nice mbuna's | |

| Awesome. | |
| Now that I know I can man it work I have a few more questions. | |
| First I'm doing this with the wife's blessing as long as I can | |
| keep it in the budget, which makes canisters out of the question | |
| for a least a month or two. Whats the opinion on Aquaclear HOB | |
| filters? I'm looking at the "70" model to start with. | |
| Second is high water flow a priority? Do I need to plan for a | |
| power head or circulation pump in the budget? | |
| Third I have a friend wanting to re-home a Featherfin Synod. He | |
| asked if I would mind taking it for this tank, and I would love | |
| to if a possibility. Is it a possibility? | |

| I personally like the Penguin Bio-Wheels for HOB's (Marineland | |
| Penguin 350), but I think an Aquaclear 70 would do fine. (I | |
| JUST looked and the 350 is on sale on Amazon right now, if you | |
| have Amazon Prime, it's a killer deal.) | |
| As far as the water flow and a power head, I don't really know | |
| much about the kind of fish you're keeping so, I'll let others | |
| address that. Just thought I'd give you the heads up on the HOB | |
| filter. You can head over to John's website and find the Amazon | |
| link to the 350. | |

| I have also had great luck with the Marineland HOB filters! I am | |
| currently running the Emperor 400s on one tank and the 350s on | |
| another tank and they have both done great! The Bio-Wheel is a | |
| great feature to grow that necessary bacteria to keep that | |
| nitrogen cycle going! :) | |
| I don't have any experience with the Aquaclear's, but I haven't | |
| heard anything that would suggest they are inferior filters. ;) | |
| Let me know what you decide to use! ;D | |

| I've had issues with marineland filter impellers clogging up in | |
| the past (like every two days). So i'll probably stick to the | |
| aquaclear. It's made by hagen, so it has that going for it. | |

| Six of one, half a dozen of another ... lol! I've had a few | |
| Aquaclears and Marinelands go bad on me here and there. I don't | |
| think any of them are 100% perfect. If you stay in the hobby | |
| long enough, I think eventually it all breaks!! ;D | |
