All Rain And No Sunshine.
By: Rain Date: September 3, 2019, 7:51 am
---------------------------------------------------------
Her seafoam green ears pinning flat against her head in
disapproval as she threw an exasperated glance at the wrap ring
that was now dissipating from view she finally dragged her ice
blue hues towards her mother her expression one of picturesque
aggravation as she carefully adjusted the collar on her leather
jacket in place. "I already told you I’m sixteen I do NOT
need a glorified babysitter for the day. Especially someone
that’s frightened of her own shadow. I mean I know that
sounds harsh but it is what it is as far as Maria is
concerned.” Folding her arms across her chest the hedgehog
continued her sniping as they made their way down the driveway.
“I mean this is just so typical of you. What you
can’t handle being around your own daughter so you decide
to pawn me off on someone else for a couple of hours. Thanks
Mum.”
More or less immune to her daughters outspoken opinions the
older fennec contrary to Rains belief hadn’t bought her to
spend time with her friend because she wanted rid of her if
anything it was the opposite. At this stage in their
relationship Sonya knew that Rains stubborn traits weren’t
going to allow her to open up with her in the way that she
wanted her to but Maria had always had a way with people if
anyone could help in getting her grumpy adolescent teenager to
open up a little it would be her. Her last snide jab prompting
Sonya to roll her eyes skyward she rapped on the deers door with
her knuckles taking a deep inhale and then an exhale outwards
before she dared reply. “You know it’s not like
that. Please just try and be … civil. I love you.”
For a moment Sonya thought about trying to brush her lips
against Rains cheek, but then from the look of disgust on her
features thought the better of it and instead settled for an
affectionate shoulder squeeze, which she shrugged off
immediately. Ignoring the lump that threatened to rise in her
throat Sonya retrieved the wrap ring from the folds of her fur,
once again flicking it off to the side it’s form then
expanding enough for only her to fit through. “I’ll
be back to pick you up later.”
And just like that Rain found herself alone on the doorstep
contemplating whether or not she could make a run for it. Psh
could she make a run for it? of course she could and yet here
she was waiting for the stupid door to be opened.

Maria heard the knocks and took a deep breath as she put her
book down and got up to answer it.
She knew who was coming and had done her best to prepare herself
mentally. She didn't mind having Rain over, she just knew she
had to be a bit gentle around her. She loved the young lady, but
didn't want to upset her, hence why she had do at least a little
bit of preparation.
"Hello there, Rain," she said with a smile once she opened the
door and looked at the girl, "i am glad you agreed to come over.
Please come in, i will get the kettle going for tea."

When the kindly deer opened the door to greet her Rain
couldn’t quite bring herself to be directly rude to her.
After all it wasn’t Marias fault that she’d been
significantly ditched for the day but that didn’t mean was
going to pretend to overjoyed about her impromptu visit either.
"Sup.." Dragging her oceanic coloured boots across the threshold
of the cosy house, she stretched her arms lazily behind her head
her expression undisguisedly blas. “Well it’s not
exactly like I had any choice in the matter. But whatever
I’m here now.“ Choosing not to further elaborate
than that she sulked her way after the doe into her kitchen,
scraping back a kitchen chair furiously against the flooring
tiles before she plonked herself down. “Tea’s great
and all but if I’m going to spend the day with you
I’m going to need the extra tolerance boost. Do you have
anything stronger? whiskey? gin and tonic? or i'll settle for a
straight up vodka.”
She already knew what the answer to her questions would be but
she figured she’d try and push her luck anyway.

"Rain, you know i don't keep that kind of a drink around my
house," Maria answered as she closed the door, "i am sorry, but
the tea will have to suffice."
The comment about tolerating it all did sting a bit, but she
just ignored it at went to fire up the kettle instead. This was
what she had braced herself for after all. Once the kettle was
on the stove and heating, she left it be and returned to the
living room, although it never left her line-of-sight. She
wasn't taking any chances.
"So, how has life been treating you, Rain?" she asked with a
little smile still. She might as well try and strike up a
conversation.

‘Of course you don’t keep decent drink around the
house. And even if you did my b*tch of a mother probably told
you not to tell me anyway.’ "Tea it is I guess.”
Not bothering to hide the fact that she was less than thrilled
about drinking tea in the middle of the day like some
stereotypical hedge-crone she watched quietly while her
surrogate aunt went about busying herself by filling the kettle
and getting the stove and heating going. Mooching after her a
few minutes after she left the kitchen Rain rubbed her hands
together to fuse some friction between her numb fingertips,
while she thought about how to answer. “Hmm. okay
considering I have an halfwit for a brother. And a mother
who’s an overwhelming disappointment in more ways than
one. Life couldn’t be more peachy.” Flopping
herself onto Marias sofa, Rain fixed her gaze on her intensely,
almost as if weighing up whether she cared enough to ask the
next question. “Hows life been treating you aunty?
although I think I can guess. Your’re single, with a hovel
of a house, no children of your own.. why is that?”

"Don't worry, i still have a fair few blends to choose from, i
am sure you'll like it," Maria argued as she tried to remain
positive, "i can also whip up some hot chocolate in the evening.
You used to love that when you were younger."
She settled down in her armchair and listened to Rain as she
gave her a very sarcastic answer. It was understandable, but
still she found it a bit rude.
"I see, yeah, i admit it sounds like life could've been better.
But it could also be worse," she tried to argue, although she
was a bit unnerved at the intense gaze Rain leveled at her after
flopping on her sofa, "i... mean, your brother i kind enough and
your mother tries her best. That's more than can be said for
some people."
The questions Maria got back made her gently tug on her shirt
collar and take a deep breath to keep it together. It was common
knowledge between her and Sonya to no show weakness around Rain
or she'd exploit to the best of her ability.
"Well... how to explain this," she trailed and tapped her
fingers together, "life has been fine. I get to help people at
the hospital, help people who can't afford medication normally
and have a roof over my head. Truthfully that's what i want in
life. As for... being single. Well... i- i guess we can say it
is just a lack of desire and effort on my end. Nothing more."

Rain wasn’t sure whether to feel appreciative of Marias
consistent efforts to make her feel more comfortable, or find
them incredibly cringey in the end she settled for a mixture of
both. “Anyone could take one look at you and tell you
don’t get out a lot and as a result that’s why my
mum is your only friend. But.. thanks the hot chocolate actually
doesn’t sound like a terrible suggestion. If I’m
being honest I haven’t had that stuff in what feels like
forever. And I’m surprised you remember stuff about me
from that far back.” Her ears occasionally flickering as
Maria spoke she felt her emotional guards reassembling from the
minute she mentioned about how Skye was kind enough.. yeah he
sure could be as long as something was in it for him. Her
brother wasn’t just kind for the sake of being that like
he led everyone to believe and it was so frustrating to hear him
be so naturally praised without a second thought.
Glancing away from Maria to stare off into nothingness the
temperamental teenager actually did consider the fact that her
childhood while not perfect could have been much worse. Yes
they’d lived off of second hand clothing and cheap-o food
brands, and luxuries had been a rarity but to give her mother
credit where due she always put her and Skye first even through
the times when it would have made more sense to take care of
herself first and foremost they were always the priority and
through and through they didn’t have much growing up but
she did it all by herself.. but that was her own fault.
Managing to refocus on the tail end of Marias sentence she found
herself looking grim her tone coming out very bluntly.
“Her best isn’t good enough for me."
Observing silently, as the older female tugged at her shirt
collar and tried to resemble some amount of composure Rains
slowly flashed a sharp fanged grin, and leant forward in her
seat. “Wow aunty Ria you sure are living the dream,
personally I don’t believe you have a lack of desire and
as for the effort I think I can help you on that part. But it'll
mean that we have to take a raincheck on hot chocolate later..."

"Well, i am good at remembering the times we spent together,"
Maria said with a light laugh, "i couldn't forget that, ever. I
would be happy to make you some later."
As she heard what Rain said about Sonya's effort to raise her
and her brother however, one could swear hints of anger spread
across the doe's features. Sunshine had been doing everything in
her power to make sure they had a decent childhood and that was
her reaction?! If it wasn't for the fact that Maria knew the
truth she'd have scolded Rain for that comment. Instead, she
just ended up letting it pass, it was Sonya's choice and she
wouldn't jeopardize it.
She didn't get the chance though as Rain leaned forward and
talked about helping her about getting closer to someone.
"Well, i am, as a matter of fact, living my dream, there is no
reason to question that," she argued back as she straightened
her back, "as for you helping me, while i am flattered by the
offer, it isn't needed. I just don't have the time for it."

As warm a feeling as it gave her to know that at least some of
her childhood memories weren’t worthless to someone she
wasn’t going to let Maria know that. God forbid
she’d start getting teary and she couldn’t deal with
emotions like that. And then oddly enough though it was fleeting
she thought she saw flashes of anger spread across the does
usually calm collected features. It was a little unnerving but
fortunately she was distracted by her aunt trying to decline her
rare generosity. Wrong choice without a doubt.
“Your’re going to make time Auntie Ria because me
and you we’re going out tonight!” What followed next
was Rains version of a ‘subtle’ montage make over.
It had taken some digging but she eventually managed to find the
deer something to wear out of her wardrobe that didn’t
look like it had come from a second-hand flea market a short
black mini dress that stopped just above the knee and she was
genuinely surprised Maria owned such a thing. And through the
power of straighteners, a metric ton of hairspray, and her
pumps. Rain deemed her bar worthy!
___
Thanking the bouncer on the doors as they passed who
didn’t so much as give them a second glance considering
she was underage. Her hunch being that the guy was probably pre
bribed earlier on the evening, Rain cast a sceptical eye over
the steadily drinking patrons in the room not particularly
loving what she had to work with. But she knew that for Maria
with her around going home with someone tonight would be out of
the question. And completely out of character but it
didn’t stop Rain from relishing the freedom of not being
cooped up in the house. However dodgy, this loud, riot dive bar
was exactly her scene. Two steps into sauntering into the
establishment Rain paused glanced at the empty space beside her,
and sighed before taking two steps backwards, to see Maria still
huddled round the side. “Maria get your ass out here
you’ve never looked better.”

Maria looked herself over and sighed. This was not what she had
expected when she allowed Rain to help her. What she had
expected just being some pointers had turned into her raiding
her wardrobe, fixing up this old thing she had hoped vanished
and then done her hair over. Granted, she was kinda impressed
that she had made her hair look good outside her ponytail. Now
it was out of it and going down to her mid-back.
"I am not showing myself like... this," she answered Rain with a
sigh, "i can respect not going out in my normal clothing but
this... this is too revealing. I would prefer some modesty and
dignity. Besides, this is hardly the place we should spend our
evening."
