Application: Gankle Gearcrook
By: Tact Date: April 15, 2020, 1:57 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
How did you learn about us OOC?
- I first learned about the Sixty Thieves in 2007 through
roleplay on Defias Brotherhood, and applied on my first
character in 2008. The rest is history.
What kind of expectations do you have for the guild?
- Since I am (for obvious reasons) very familiar with the guild
already, I shall keep it very brief. I expect interesting
conflict-driven roleplay both with fellow guild members and the
rest of the community. This new character is intended to fill
the void left in my soul since my previous thief, Beast, died a
gruesome death. I have always found goblins one of the most
interesting races in the game, and I expect this new character
to satisfy my need for roleplaying one.
What is the name and race of your character?
- Name is Gankle, both IC and OOC. He is a male goblin.
What is your character's background like?
- Gankle is the youngest of the three Gearcrook brothers, born
to a modest working class family in Crapopolis, Kezan. The early
stages of his life were rather insignificant and not dissimilar
to your average goblin, aiming for an education and probably
later a job at engineering, just like his father had done.
However, this plan ended abruptly when both his parents perished
unexpectedly in a trike accident, which is when the brothers
who were eleven, thirteen, and fifteen years old at the time
were forced to take to the streets to fend for themselves,
finding themselves unable to pay rent for the house. It took no
longer than three days until they turned to crime in their
newfound distress, starting with lifting food from the
marketplace, and gradually evolving to pickpocketing, break-ins,
and armed robberies. The stress of the labile lifestyle led all
three brothers to indulge in various vices, which meant that the
coin earned through their illicit activities rarely lasted
longer than a week at a time.
Years passed, and then came Deathwing and the eruption of Mount
Kajaro. The Gearcrook brothers were among those to wound up in
Kalimdor, though instead of embracing the Horde, they stayed
true to their old ways and continued on the path of crime, which
seemed to go rather swimmingly for a good while. A streak of
luck such as theirs could only last so long, and indeed, one
fateful night when the three were on a job to break into a store
in Bilgewater Harbor, something went irreversibly wrong. Both of
Gankle's older brothers were captured and sentenced to prison in
the aftermath, whereas Gankle himself had managed to get out
without a scratch, leaving him feeling guilty and responsible
for the less than ideal outcome. Though the partnership between
the brothers had always had its own ups and downs, they
ultimately always stuck together, remaining loyal to one another
and putting family above all else. Now, for the first time, he
is both without partners and family.
Why does your character seek to join the Sixty Thieves?
- With his two brothers locked away in prison, Gankle has found
himself without his usual partners in crime, and he has been in
the business long enough to know that no-one stays in the
business for long if they work alone. While it's uncertain
whether he would be interested in lingering after his brothers'
release, joining the Sixty Thieves seems like a decent solution
to his financial situation for the immediate future. Perhaps he
will even be able to earn enough to make amends to his brothers
when they have finished serving their sentence, thinking himself
responsible for why they were imprisoned to begin with.
What kind of skills does your character have?
- Having been involved in crime for all of his adult life, he
has learned a trick or two. Most of his skills are related to
thieving in one way or another; skills he has either
deliberately self-learned to improve at it, or ones that have
developed as a consequence of it. These include skills such as
acrobatics, swindling, different methods of persuasion, and
picking locks and pockets. He very much likes to think himself a
professional, but whether that is actually the case will be left
to the community to judge.
How powerful is your character?
- Gankle is by no means a powerful character, as most of his
power comes from his nimble fingers and simple street smarts.
Even though he doesn't shy away from the occasional scuffle, he
has received no combat training and mostly relies on instinct
and what little past experience he has from getting into trouble
before.
What style of roleplay do you enjoy?
- While I certainly enjoy the occasional DM or sandbox event,
I'm most of all interested in engaging the rest of the
community. The uncertainty of what will happen next is always
present in random roleplay and especially in conflict
situations making stories and plots all the more exciting for
me. In my opinion, dynamic and spontaneous interactions are some
of the best things that roleplay has to offer.
How would you define conflict in roleplay, and how do you feel
about consequences?
- Conflict in RP is a broad concept. It can refer to any minor
disagreement, gruesome violence, or the potential of either.
Essentially.. any kind of move in roleplay that involves another
player character, and might cause some friction. I believe that
roleplaying a criminal is all about creating and managing
conflicts with other characters, and no conflict comes without
consequences. The longer a criminal continues on the path of
crime, the more notorious they will become and the more enemies
they will make, increasing the likelihood of getting caught and
being brought to justice. I accept all consequences on the same
level as those that I roleplay with.
Do you accept character death?
- I accept character death from both events and conflict
roleplay with other player characters. While I never seek to
kill my characters off per se, I think the risk of death as a
consequence adds a very exciting element to roleplay, which I've
come to love and get addicted to. It also makes it possible for
me to roleplay my characters more freely, without needing to
constantly ponder whether something my character does
transgresses the boundaries of fair play if I don't keep death
an option as a consequence.
Anything else you would like to share about yourself or your
character?
- I think all of the above just about covers it! I'm hoping to
be able to dedicate a fair amount of time to this character,
despite also having others in the guild.
