| I only wanted a tub... | |
| By: Gasket Date: March 13, 2017, 4:24 pm | |
| --------------------------------------------------------- | |
| Was after a SWB tub a while back. | |
| Guy got in touch who had a '69 IIA that he was considering | |
| parting-out. | |
| The tub was spot on, but seemed a shame to break the vehicle so | |
| ended up buying the whole thing. | |
| Rough as anything, but a nice rebuild project. | |
| The project vehicle the tub was intended for was sidelined. | |

| Cheers Chris - thats why I bought it to be honest - just over a | |
| year ago. Most of the paintwork is original (couple of celly | |
| touch-ups that soon rubbed-off with thinners). I've done quite a | |
| few LR builds now. Early ones had perfect, body-shop paint and I | |
| was too nervous to use them in anger. Most recent one I did a | |
| really rough/quick paint job (thinking it'd be more usable) and | |
| hated it even more. This one is keeping the original skins - I | |
| have NOS door/door top frames ready galv'd - same with the rad | |
| panel and tub supports. Recon bulkhead and the chassis will be | |
| new - but all the blue bits are staying, along with the brown | |
| cappings. | |
| If I paint a car, I feel I have to detail every single component | |
| - down to dismantling pedal boxes (OCD-much?) so it literally | |
| adds years to the build - last proper one took nearly 4 years | |
| working flat out. No good - the things are there to be used, so | |
| going to the other extreme this time - aiming to finish within | |
| 6-months from starting. | |
| Usually aim for period-correct, S2-forum-esque builds, but not | |
| this time not by a long way. | |
| Been collecting parts for about 12-months now. In my family's | |
| barn, there happens to be a set of 24spl halfshafts, an LSD, a | |
| Stumpy R380, Ashcroft series transfer adaptor, 130 TDI clutch, | |
| V8-ring, stage-1 front axle innards, P38 steering box, defender | |
| column and a 4.6 RV8 sat waiting to go in. Still saving for the | |
| Heystee disc swivels/hubs though. | |
| Body, suspension, axle casings, transfer box and old ripped | |
| seats will be original, plus a new Richards chassis - the rest | |
| is a bit Mad-Max. | |
| She'll look like crap but'll go like stink - the rims I have | |
| (D130) are a bit rusty but not bothering painting them and not | |
| bothering with paras either. Old, low multi leaves all the way. | |

| [/quote] ha ha, I know - that's the prev. owner's garage, quite | |
| a nice set-up. I've only got a simple engine crane. The LR is | |
| completely stripped now and is flat-packed in a storage unit, | |
| has been for a while. Quite handy having it in bits and not | |
| being in a rush - means I can eye up the rotten bits and keep an | |
| eye out for better ones before I have to fire-up the MIG set. | |

| Looks a nice 'just run in' example! | |
| I hope you keep her durdy clothes on her - she looks fab. | |
| I actually think it's harder to keep the patina / rat look than | |
| it is to restore to shiny....I mean, where do you stop? You | |
| repair the bulkhead and repaint - same with the front panel. | |
| These bits are then wearing new paint! Then you refurb the axlle | |
| internals and realise that you need to protect the diff pan from | |
| rusting out....so you repaint. Then the door tops rust | |
| out....repair / replace and repaint. | |
| You then look at it for too long and too hard after your hard | |
| work and think hmmm, if I just repainted the rest it and | |
| regalved the cappings it would all match and look pretty. rbchn | |

| Cheers pal. | |
| Not too bothered about new paint in places - cheap cellulose | |
| fades in months. | |
| -door and door top frames will be replaced and painted. I have | |
| random NOS ones ready galved. Old alloy skins put back on. | |
| -rad panel will be galved and painted. Already have a rust free | |
| one. | |
| -underseat battery box replaced with ally. | |
| -bulkhead galved and painted. Going to Tony Wood or Classic | |
| Bulkheads (done my own on a jig and also had Ashtree ones in the | |
| past) | |
| -tub supports will be galved and painted. | |
| -body stays are already galved and will be painted. | |
| -bonnet frame is already galved and will be painted | |
| thats a day's worth of painting (mordant, quick spray of etch | |
| and a couple of coats of cheap celly blue paint or black from a | |
| rattle-can as appropriate). | |
| Birmabright will be roughly straightened and any electrolytic | |
| corrosion will be cut away and replaced with tig'd repairs | |
| (there's not much at all - just a tiny bit on the inner wings | |
| and front of tub). 'bout 8 days work on the alloy and swapping | |
| the frames plus the day of painting. Spent 18 months on the | |
| bodywork alone last time. Aiming to have it MOT'd within 6 | |
| months. | |
| Done. Overhaul mechanicals. Reassemble. Drive. | |
| Shackles/steering/axle casings/props/hubs/wheels/pedal | |
| boxes/cappings etc, etc are all being left. Detailing them leads | |
| to madness (for me anyway - thats the bit that leads me down the | |
| pursuit of perfection and adds huge time). | |
| Its more for ease and speed than trying to go for a 'look'. Just | |
| happen to be quite fond of honest, battered old land rovers. But | |
| have a hatred of rust. | |
