XCTF

Stony Brook XCTF needs some love on this board. The men's cross
country team is heading into fall 18 as two time defending
champs. They have three returning runners in Danny Connelly,
Cameron Avery, and Michael Watts that broke the school 5k record
last winter. Kyle Kelly ran a 4:08 mile to take third at indoor
america east championships. Vann Moffett and Kevin Vinolas have
both run sub 14:40 for 5k. Then they bring in what has to be, in
terms of depth, the best freshmen class they've every had. Aiden
Smyth and Robert Becker finished 2nd and 5th in the 1600 at the
New York State Championships running 4:11 and 4:12 respectively.
Carlos Santos finished third in the steeplechase at state
championships running 9:16. 5 of the 7 freshmen have run sub
4:20 for 1600 meters, and the slowest 1600 pr is 4:25 which is
nothing to sneeze at.
The guys need to keep improving, but I think this might be the
year the men's team becomes a national player i.e. qualifies for
NCAAs.
I'll follow up with a similar breakdown of the women's team soon

Thanks SBU Fan . I ran in high school and college and those
are very good times . It seems all the teams seem to be
improving and are loaded with good talent . I root for all them
anyway .

Our track/XC teams have always been strong. Particularly in the
distance events. Glad that's still the case. Just wish the
throws were better.

The women's team is in a slightly different position than the
men's. Not long ago the women's cross country team was a
national player with a 7th place finish at the 2010 national
championships. This is, in my opinion, still the most impressive
accomplishment of any Stony Brook athletics team. There are 344
NCAA division I women's cross country teams. Most if not all
power 5 schools sponsor cross country. To finish 7th is really
really impressive.
The women's team has actually, by their standards, struggled
lately. After winning 6 straight AE champsionships from 2007 to
2012, they have not won a conference title since. I have a
totally unsubstantiated theory that dropping the swimming and
diving team in 2012 had some title IX effects that brought about
less scholarships for cross country. Or maybe they cut swimming
and diving in 2012 and made budget cuts to the women's cross
country team for cost savings.
Anyway I think this is the year the women's team gets back on
top. They return almost everyone from last years third place
team including Anikka Sisson (3rd at Conference championships),
Alexandria Ortega (4th), Tiana Guevara (5th), Talia Guevara
(21st), and Holly Manning (25th). Holly Manning is coming off a
great indoor and outdoor track season, but looks like more of a
true mid-distinance runner so we will see how it translates to
cross. Ciara Murtphy, 55th at last years championships, had a
great indoor and outdoor season. They bring in a large freshmen
class, all of which could be good college runners. It's a matter
of how long it'll take them to acclimated to college and
collegiate running.
The top three is great. They just need to the rest of the team
to close the gap and they'll be really good.

Good info . The transition from high school to college running
can be tough . Strength, speed and endurance all play into it
as kids develop.

The men's team is pre-season ranked 3rd in the northeast.

Today's the conference championships and there will be a live
stream available here:
https://portal.stretchinternet.com/americaeast/portal.htm?eventId=482612&stream…
The men's race is at 12 followed by the women's race at 1. I
think both the men and the women should be favorites to win. On
the men's side, it would be almost shocking if they lost. They
are incredibly deep and at a high level. They probably have
10-12 guys that could score for any team in the conference. The
women's side will close and with a young team Stony Brook
doesn't have much room for error.
Annika Sisson for the women and Cameron Avery/Vann Moffett
should be very much in contention for the individual conference
titles.
I'll be tuning in. Hoping the XC can meet the SBU momentum going
forward.
