SB vs UMBC 3/28 730pm
By: Chairman of the Board Date: March 24, 2014, 10:43 am
---------------------------------------------------------
Its been an up and down season so far for SB, in terms and Ws
and Ls. Also, at times theyve spent a good quarter against
Maryland or Duke, and then also were a completely different
squad against other teams for a quarter. Coach is clearly still
experimenting with goalies, close defensemen, defensive
midfield, offensive midfield. But we are getting closer to
clearly defined roles, i think.
UMBC's strength is probably on offense and at faceoff (Phil
Poe). Like us, they have a young offense led by a veteran
(Rooney/Gregoire). I think we hold a size advantage there, but
with our changes on defense, we probably dont have the size as
much. I havent seen them yet this year, but from highlights,
they distribute the ball through the midfield, so i wonder what
we do with the slides.
Also similar to SB, they put in a really nice 3 quarters against
Hop and then were blown out (similar to SB putting in some good
halves against great teams). Their loss to High Point should be
disconcerting, but it turns out HP won 6 in a row (nothing
really earth shattering though). Theyve otherwise won the games
they should win and lost the ones they should lose.
Last year they beat us by 1 and no one player really stood out
except Poe at the faceoff. I do remember they outshot us 2-1
and that is also the theme for SB this year. SB hasnt won on
the road yet and this would be a great time to start.

Another one goal lose...so painful to be up two men in OT and
not put one in.

three things worth noting-
Gorton (UMBC goalie) was electrifying for most of the game. Id
give him the gameball.
SB defense had a lot of trouble with the inverts. Our diamond
zone left the wings wide open. In fact, BC couldve had 3-4 more
goals from the wing, but Johnstone had a good day i thought on
shots he wasnt supposed to save.
End of the day, yeah this sucks, but if we get to the tourney,
we likely are going to play UA twice, and they are beatable, and
unlikely we will beat them both times, so we just need to make
sure we win the one that counts. GO SB
