Sorry, everyone, if you have Baller TV, you're out of luck.
You'll have to be an ESPN subscriber to watch this one.
Somebody has to fill me in on this home crowd situation. In
their three home games, their attendance has been between 833
and 892. I mean, that is an abomination. Their gym is similar to
ours in size and they're under 1,000? I guess there's other
stuff to do in LA, and the team lacking any real tradition; they
haven't made the NCAAs since Kimble/Gathers in 1990. Since then,
they've only made the conference tournament final one time
thanks to Gonzaga, St. Mary's and BYU. Brutal.
People over there need to see what's going on though. This is a
good squad.
This just isn't a good matchup for us. LMU's an older,
experienced team with a ton of length, athleticism and size. On
the offensive side, they're a little perimeter oriented, but
they also have a few knockdown shooters (39% from three as a
team). But make no mistake: all of these guys can put it on the
floor and get to the rack, especially if they don't see much
resistance inside. What they do defensively is the bigger
concern for me. They really pressure the ball, and they have
length up and down the roster. Amey's their sixth man, and he is
really really good. So much energy, and not only can he score
but he is a gnat defensively. He reminds me of Ayinde Hikim from
Lowell, who I always liked.
This is a team that is physical and will get on the floor for
loose balls. I like their new point guard, AJ Thomas, a freshman
whose role expanded with the injury to Jan Vide. He likes to get
downhill and, again, defensively he competes. There is more than
an 11 percent gap between FG% and FG% defense, and they're +5.8
in the rebounding column too.
You'll look at the guys on the floor and wonder if this is a
high-major, and justifiably so Brown was at Cal and then
Virginia Tech, Shelley was at USC. Issanza, an absolute tower
but still pretty agile, played a bit role at Oklahoma for a
couple years. I like him. Vide, who I don't think we'll see due
to injury, started out at UCLA. Oh by the way, he's a 6-6 point
guard who put up big numbers in the first five games.
Another injury leads me to a new game: Six Degrees of Stony
Brook. I can do it in two. LMU's Tanner Thomas played at Sacred
Heart with Aaron Clarke in 2021-22. Aaron Clarke played for
Stony Brook. Thomas was great across the Sound for SHU but
hasn't played yet for LMU; not sure what's up.
LMU was picked to finish seventh in the West Coast Conference so
perhaps more mediocrity can be expected. I think they look
pretty tough. They've posted a few nice wins early, including a
double-digit win over Jeff Boals and Ohio this week. Next up is
us, who I'm so happy clawed their way to victory against
Bethune-Cookman after that dismal performance against Pacific.
Geno's still finagling with his rotation. On Tuesday, Simmon
really bailed us out with some late shooting, and a credit to
Pratt and Valentiny for coming up with eight big boards apiece.
We had pretty good balance in the scoring column, and will have
to find answers offensively from somewhere to spell Pratt when
needed.
Fingers crossed we can keep the turnovers down and do enough on
the glass to stay with these guys. I'd be a little surprised if
we can. We'll see.

the beach to downtown.

I would imagine the current version of LMU suffers from a
similar malaise as SBU in no real (or long forgotten) basketball
tradition and other things that interest students now. Many
years of roughly 5-10 wins overall doesn't help, and for a hoops
fan in LA you've also got the much bigger draws of
Lakers/Clippers and UCLA in the same broad basin. If you're
going to drive to a game, probably better to choose one of those
teams rather than venturing on the 405 next to LAX to catch LMU.
Game is past my bedtime tonight, but I gather from social media
that the team has enjoyed their time out there. The few hundred
or so fans in attendance will no doubt have no idea who or what
a Stony Brook Seawolf is, so here's hoping the guys put on a
good show.

It's worth noting that the CAA is sitting nicely at 13th in the
conference rankings, with UNCW creeping into the top 100 today
after thumping Navy. Their non-con resume is a baker's dozen of
cupcakes. The question is whether that was the plan or if they
had trouble finding a high major dance partner, as we've heard
other mid-major coaches say.
In 2022-23, the CAA had seven teams at 300+ in the rankings, and
that put us in 26th, behind the AE. We're off to a good start
this year.
The two best wins belong to Towson, which fetched neutral floor
victories over Rhode Island (95) and Liberty (101). The next
would be Northeastern's win over Duquesne (129).

I brought this up last year or the year before more as a
question than a complaint.
In 2020-21, our first seven games averaged 33 posts and 1334
views. This includes a 12/665 game against Point Park.
In 2025-26, our first seven games averaged 12.4 posts and 220
views. We bottomed out at 9/95 on Monday for the Pacific game.
What would you attribute it to? The team's lack of success? The
changing ways that people consume/submit information? The
transfer portal? What do you think?

Is it me? Or are the ESPN announcers actively rooting for LMU?

I feel like this is the best I've seen us play in years. Great
passing, lots of cuts, and we've gotten after it defensively.
Considering we saw a stagnant offense for years under Geno, I
have to think this is the Hipsher effect. It has to be.
