Stony Brook womens lacrosses superstar core back for one final
ride
https://sbstatesman.com/124378/sports/ready-stony-brook-womens-lacrosses-supers…
It made us even hungrier for this year, and I think thats a
big reason why all the fifth years came back because we were
like, We cant end on that, Masera said. We cant end up
going out in the Sweet 16; I think everyones just bought in
this year.
Head coach Joe Spallina is the man who assembled this
Avengers-esque squad, scouting them from a very young age and
signing them early in their high school years. His intense style
of coaching along with his masterful scheming has helped develop
all of these girls into some of the nations best players.
The roots not only run deep for the Mitchell sisters, but also
for Hart and Verhulst who played travel lacrosse with them.
Throughout middle and high school, all four played for the Long
Island Yellow Jackets, who were coached by Pete Mitchell, Morgan
and McKenzies father.
Verhulst has had a meteoric rise as a Seawolf. She has been a
starter for each of her first four years, but was used more as a
draw specialist and a defensive midfielder through her first
three seasons. Then last year happened. Not only was she the top
option in the draw circle, but she exploded on offense with 25
goals after scoring only four through her first three years.
Theres real friendships and connections, and its personal,
Spallina said. For these kids, its so much more than just
putting on the uniform. To see what theyve done, its just
remarkable. Its special. Its more than lacrosse.

TAYLOR'S TAKES: 10 PREDICTIONS FOR 2024 SEASON

OVER THE HUMP
Every season, there are always a few teams that consistently
come up in my Is this the year? conversation. For me, it feels
like Ive been waiting years for teams like Notre Dame, Loyola
and Stony Brook to get over the NCAA quarterfinal hump and get
to the Final Four. Each squad always has an amazing regular
season run yet doesnt make a Final Four appearance. Im hoping
this is the year that at least one of these talented squads gets
over that hump and competes Memorial Day Weekend because the
lacrosse world is ready to see them. Who will it be?

CAA: Stony Brook

These preseason accolades mean nothing. More disrespect in my
opinion. Levy and Masera should be first teamers. Team should
have a chip on its shoulder. But is this the year they finally
break through? Final Four? Deep and loaded roster. Biggest
question mark is goalkeeper.

Stony Brook: 'The End Goal is Always Greatness'
https://www.insidelacrosse.com/article/stony-brook-the-end-goal-is-always-great…
When the season ended last year to Loyola, a lot of us made the
decision right then and there to return, says Hart, a graduate
attacker who put up 78 points in 2023. We didnt want to go out
like that and end our careers that way. Falling short last year,
after seeing everyones reaction we all looked at each other
hugged and cried and made the decision right then and there.
Hart is one of six returning graduate students who will complete
their fifth years of eligibility in for Stony Brook. The
returning Seawolves have helped Stony Brook combine for a 51-11
record, win five NCAA Tournament games and secure two conference
championships.
I think this team has it all. This year we check all the
boxeshigh character kids and a dedicated coaching staff, said
Spallina. We are all on a missiona focused mission. We are
positioned to make a major jump. We have improved in the goal,
stayed strong in defense and have continuity returning on
offense. We return our top nine scores and have added a transfer
from UMass, not to mention the first-year players who are bought
in.
Hart credits the team atmosphereone that is based in
competitiveness, trust and transparency for the ease in her
decision to return.
We have a really great bond with one another, on and off the
field. We push each other to be better, we hold each other
accountable, and we buy in to the program goals, says Hart, who
has played with several players for many years with the Long
Island Yellow Jackets. Stony Brook lacrosse has given me life
long friends and has grown me into a better person, a better
leader on and off the field.
Lacrosse is so big for the Long Island community, and we have
developed as a hometown team. Its genuine and homemade and
its a player driven systemits the foundation of our program,
says Spallina.
Masera, ILWomens No. 16 returning player in the country, knows
what success feels like. A second-team ILWomen All American, she
finished out her junior season with 95 points and 120 draw
controls. The CAA Midfielder of the Year led the team and
conference in points and knows that she is able to be successful
because of those around her.
I have had the pleasure of playing with our seniors/fifth years
for the past three years and learning from them. The chemistry
we have built, the relationships we have forged on and off the
field are what make this place and this team so special. We
really do love each other. They are my best friends out there
and we want to win. My success is their success.
Levy, an All-CAA defender, knows that its important to make
every day count.
We want to go all the way, and we know in order to do that,
its on usthe players. We are here to get better every day.
The end goal is greatness, together, with our best friends,
says Levy. They are the best funniest most talented people. It
makes every day so special. We go through the good and the bad
with these girls. Thats what makes our bond so strong.
Success is measured as far as we can take each othertogether.
This class, this team is so special because we love each other.
Our success is based upon how much we support one another. We
can pull each other up and hold each other accountable, says
Masera.

REES AND OHLMILLER LACROSSES POWER COUPLE
https://www.nll.com/news/rees-and-ohlmiller-lacrosses-power-couple/
Rees and Ohlmiller were good friends while they both
attended Stony Brook University it was common for the mens
and womens teams to hang out but they never dated. It wasnt
until the summer of 2021, at a PLL game on Long Island, that
they began to take their friendship to the next level.
Rees, a Port Coquitlam, BC native, plays for the Rochester
Knighthawks, the PLLs Waterdogs and Team Canada, where he
helped his country win silver at the 2023 World Mens Lacrosse
Championship. He attended Stony Brook from 2016-2019, starring
for the Seawolves mens lacrosse team.
Kylie Ohlmiller, is from Islip, New York. She plays in the
Athletes Unlimited Pro Lacrosse League (pro womens lacrosse)
and for Team USA. Ohlmillers time at Stony Brook overlapped
with Rees for three years, from 2016 to 2019. While there, she
set NCAA records with 246 career assists and 498 points. Playing
in the AUPLL, Ohlmiller led the league in points in 2021 with 48
and was third in points in 2023 with 29.
We both play professional lacrosse, and we both play
international lacrosse, but that kind of looks different for
both of us, Ohlmiller said. I think thats very interesting
and unique, so our schedules dont match up too much. [Our
careers] definitely keep us busy. Theres lots of training, so
we try to train together. Thats a lot of our time together if
we have busy days well meet up at the gym together.
For the next three quarters of the year, both Rees and Ohlmiller
are targeting one of the biggest events of their lacrosse
careers. They are both preparing to make their final national
team rosters at the 2024 World Box Lacrosse Championships set
for September 20th-29th in Utica, New York, which is only about
a two-hour drive from where they live.
great start hosting dartmouth, 6-2 end of first. the usual
suspects (masera hat trick, picked a corner at the buzzer).
playing upbeat in transition, scored shorthanded, and even a
goal taken away too. finn is a nice surprise.
