I think people find this jewelry offensive because its sort of
a fetishized depiction of Africans as slaves and/or servants. At
least thats how I have understood it.
I can remember a time here in the states when it wasn't unusual
to see lawn jockeys in front yards. They are now seen in a
similar light and are fast disappearing.
This is a very good discussion of a touchy subject, and Im glad
were having it!

You put it so well, AB!
I read a little bit about the Blackmoor jewellery and figurines,
much of it depicts black people wearing trays (servants,
slaves).

OMG, this is a bit OT, but while looking for Blackmoor
figurines, I stumbled upon those here!

Wow. Just.....wow.
And I thought the jewelry was repugnant.

Yes, those figurines leave not much to the imagination as to the
place of each person depicted.
They serve as a comment on times gone by, never-the-less.
No one would agree that they show modern times and equal roles.
No one would want those times again.
The past can not be extinguished no matter how unjust or
terrible. Artwork is often a reflection of society at a
particular time. I think to cover things under the carpet (hide
artwork away) can be dangerous. To see is to remember, and
remember to be improved.

Like Anastasia, I am glad we are having a discussion about such
a sensitive topic. It does require an open mind and a grain of
salt.
I am on the fence with this. Some of the pictures posted here
are clearly out of line and are clearly meant to reflect
negatively/mock coloured people. In other cases, I see art and a
depiction of how things were at some points. Of course it takes
you back to an era (colonialism / slavery) which is thankfully
over.
I guess that what annoys me a bit these days is the political
correctness which, as good and useful as it can be, can also
easily become a new dictature to curb freedom of speech (just to
be clear I do not condone racism). To me there's a very fine
line there and we should all be careful.
In Princess Michael's case, I do not know if she had some nasty
thoughts in mind when she wore that brooch. I would not put it
pas her. She has shown her snobbishness in the past and my
feeling is that she would not at all mind to be back in "those"
times when people with titles had all the rights and enjoyed an
even more privileged life while the rest had and was nothing (in
the minds of some).

Michael and his nephew George Earl of St. Andrews represented
the royal family at the funeral of the Countess of Harewood last
Friday. She was the wife of the Queens first cousin and daughter
in law of princess Mary .

Yes, I read that when Patricia's husband, George Lascelles, was
born he was 6th in line to the throne.
That was in 1923.

Lovely.
And I noticed that, in the background of Harry and Meghan's
wedding photos, was a lamp with a black sculpture similar to the
one in this thread.
