Refrigerators go rogue
By: Kerry Date: March 19, 2015, 1:21 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
No joke. The new "smart" refrigerators and other appliances are
now involved in sending spam emails according to a security
company called Proofpoint
http://investors.proofpoint.com/releasedetail.cfm?releaseid=819799:
SUNNYVALE, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 01/16/14 -- Proofpoint, Inc.,
(NASDAQ: PFPT), a leading security-as-a-service provider, has
uncovered what may be the first proven Internet of Things
(IoT)-based cyberattack involving conventional household "smart"
appliances. The global attack campaign involved more than
750,000 malicious email communications coming from more than
100,000 everyday consumer gadgets such as home-networking
routers, connected multi-media centers, televisions and at least
one refrigerator that had been compromised and used as a
platform to launch attacks. As the number of such connected
devices is expected to grow to more than four times the number
of connected computers in the next few years according to media
reports, proof of an IoT-based attack has significant security
implications for device owners and Enterprise targets.
Just as personal computers can be unknowingly compromised to
form robot-like "botnets" that can be used to launch large-scale
cyberattacks, Proofpoint's findings reveal that cyber criminals
have begun to commandeer home routers, smart appliances and
other components of the Internet of Things and transform them
into "thingbots" to carry out the same type of malicious
activity. Cyber criminals intent on stealing individual
identities and infiltrating enterprise IT systems have found a
target-rich environment in these poorly protected internet
connected devices that may be more attractive and easier to
infect and control than PC, laptops, or tablets.
I think it's horrible and our governments seem negligent
in not stopping such things.
Of course, if you buy one of the new smart televisions, they spy
on you. They respond to voice commands, so they are listening
to everything that is said in the room. They admit they will
collect information about you and sell it to other people. From
clarkhoward.com
http://www.clarkhoward.com/news/clark-howard/technology/your-smart-tv-spying-yo…
Samsung is getting a lot of heat for smart TVs that can spy on
you. In fact, their terms of service says they will spy on you:
"Please be aware that if your spoken words include personal or
other sensitive information, that information will be among the
data captured and transmitted to a third party through your use
of Voice Recognition."
People are becoming less aware too since they're using their
minds less and relying on gadgets. If people are told by their
GPS to drive into a river or ocean, some of them will do it.
Their computers must know, right?
Some woman just hit by a train in Florida while she was texting.
No, I'm not joking. She did not hear the train! From
nydailynews.com
http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/fla-woman-survives-texting-walking-fre…
This Florida woman probably needs a new emoji to convey her
feelings.
Sheena Keynna, 27, survived getting clipped by a freight train
after walking into its path while texting Monday, police said.
Keynna "wasn't paying attention" and somehow did not hear the
train barreling down the tracks when she walked around the
crossing gates, Lakeland Police Sgt. Gary Gross told the Ledger
of Lakeland.
The train clipped her and threw her into the air, Gross said.
The hit fractured her right arm and injured her right leg.
The world's starting to look scary in some ways to me.

I remember way back a warning about "smart electric metres" they
would send your reading to the company via wireless.
Turned out that somehow they could analyse your movements by
when your power went up and down, by this they sold information
to TV companies so that they knew the best time to advertise to
the largest audience.
Big brother does not need a camera to spy on us any more.
Yes, more spying. I hadn't thought about that; but
clearly, they could know when people were at home and awake by
spying on your electricity usage.
When I thought about using wireless, I thought of other
potential problems. Could they be hacked? I googled it. Yes,
they can.
Smart meters widely used in Spain can be hacked to under-report
energy use, security researchers have found.
Poorly protected credentials inside the devices could let
attackers take control over the gadgets, warn the researchers.
The utility that deployed the meters is now improving the
devices' security to help protect its network.
The discovery comes as one security expert warns some terror
groups may attack critical infrastructure systems.
Many utility companies are installing smart meters to help
customers monitor and manage their power use and help them be
more energy efficient.
"We took them apart to see how they work," said independent
researcher Javier Vidal who, with Alberto Illera, found the
flaws in the smart meters.
"We suspected there could be some issues with them and we wanted
to check.
"We feared the security would be easy to break and we confirmed
that," he told the BBC.
Terrorists could get smart and do all kinds of things. Expert
hackers could go into business by selling their services to
customers to reduce their bills. The opposite could be done
too. If you had a neighbor you hated, you could hack into his
smart meter and make his bill ten times what it should be.
I was reading the other day how easy it is to hack into medical
devices. Hackers could kill people by playing around with
insulin pumps and heart devices.
http://www.wired.com/2014/04/hospital-equipment-vulnerable/
I also read somewhere about automobiles with computers that can
be hacked. Someone could make your brakes fail or make you
speed up.
I'm still wondering if some of the plane crashes in the news are
hackers experimenting to see if they can control the planes.
Iran claimed to have done that with an American drone. It is
known that drones can be hacked.

And so many people still say. " There is no such things as a
conspiracy." I have had so many conversations in my time.
There has always been a fight for ultimate control of the people
of the world and all that is in the world.
I just hope that when they finally get all the information they
are collecting, sort it out, rank us for our danger value and
put us in the groups they want us in. They will then kill each
other in the fight for who will actually be the king of the
world!! ;D
